Tencent Games and Garena’s multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game Arena of Valor (Honor of Kings in China) is highly popular in Southeast Asia, and a lot of people have been playing it on their mobile phones and consoles.

For new players, we have prepared this guide to learn the basics of a Classic 5v5 match in Arena of Valor. From heroes and their skills down to the game’s economy — we’ve got you covered.

Objectives

The main goal of Arena of Valor’s Classic 5v5 mode is to destroy each other’s base. The team who accomplishes this first, wins.

On average, a match lasts from 12 to 18 minutes.

Teams and roles

A team consists of five players with different roles.

  • Tank – the hero that soaks up all the damage; usually has the highest health among the team.
  • Warrior – these melee heroes have high attack statistics and a fair amount of HP, typically played in the Dark Slayer lane (top)
  • Assassin – they like to roam around the map, gaining experience by killing jungle monsters and performing ganks to help get their laners ahead.
  • Mage – the mid lane is their playground. Mages have magic abilities that deal burst damage against enemies.
  • Marksman – on the opposite side of the map, Marksman heroes are assigned to the Abyssal Dragon lane at bot. Their basic attacks scale off items, which is why they are usually the ones raking up all the kills throughout a match.
  • Support – these heroes sustain, heal, and provide crowd control for the team. They play a crucial part in the early game, acting as babysitters for Marksman heroes in the Abyssal Dragon lane.

Controls

The game’s controls are simple and straightforward. On the lower left side is the joystick, which is used to move heroes towards any direction of your choosing.

The lower right side is picture of a clenched fist, your ‘normal attack’ button,

Located above the normal attack button are your hero’s skills. The skill directly above the attack button is the hero’s ultimate. As the player gains experience and levels up, an upgrade (+) button will appear right above the skills that you can press to upgrade.

Sending signals or pings is also possible in AoV. Simply tap on the area of the map to send one.

Map and the brush

The classic map consists of three lanes, with brushes, the jungle and towers in between.

Hiding in the brush grants players a vision share effect, which means that teammates would be able to share your vision of an enemy hero.

Each side has a total of nine defense towers, three in the top, middle, and bottom lane. Tier 1 towers are furthest from the base, while Tier 3 towers are those located within the base.

On the team’s base lies the core (sometimes called the nexus). The first team to destroy the core wins the game.

Jungle monsters

There are five main jungle monsters in AoV.

Killing the Abyssal Dragon will give the whole team gold and experience. It appears two minutes after the match starts, and refreshes once every two minutes after being killed.

The Abyssal Dragon evolves to the Enraged Abyssal Dragon after ten minutes. Defeating its enraged state grants different buffs according to the hero’s primary roles.

Defeating the Dark Slayer will give players increased attack damage and ability power, faster health and mana regeneration, and movement speed bonus.

Additionally, killing the Dark Slayer will enable players to summon the Drake, which can be utilized to push and destroy towers. Located in the top lane, the Dark Slayer spawns every five minutes starting at the eighth minute mark.

For monsters that give buffs, downing Spirit Sentinel grants the player 50 HP regeneration per second and 20 bonus movement speed for a minute.

Recommended for mage heroes, defeating the Sage Golem will give players 20% cooldown speed and 2% mana regeneration per second for a limited duration.

For heroes that want to execute early game ganks, it’s a good idea to first secure Might Buffs, which come from killing Might Golems.

Might Buffs reduce enemy movement speed whenever a normal attack hits, and deals extra burn damage to the enemy.

Gaining gold

There are four ways to gain gold in AoV: Killing enemy minions, killing jungle monsters, destroying towers, and killing enemy heroes.

Melee, ranged, and siege are the three types of minions in the game.

Melee minions are the tankiest, while the ranged minions have less HP and deal more damage. Siege minions are minions who ride a vehicle. They are the strongest, and have a high amount of health and damage. Last-hitting minions (delivering the killing blow) grants players more gold.

Jungle monsters give off different amounts of gold, as their bounty increases with game time.

Golems give a maximum of 140 gold while smaller monsters like spiders and goblins give a maximum of 90 gold when killed. The Abyssal Dragon gives 120 gold when killed by or past the ten-minute mark.

Destroying towers also rewards players with gold. Tier 1 towers give 60 gold, Tier 2 towers give 80 gold, and Tier 3 towers give 100 gold.

Items

Gold gained can be spent on different items to strengthen your hero’s statistics. There are over a hundred items to choose from, divided into attack, magic, defense, movement, jungling, and support categories.

Players start with 300 gold and can purchase starting items like Short Sword for +20 physical attack, Spell Tome for +40 magic power, Ring of Vitality for +300 Max HP, boots for extra movement speed, and even Wind and Water stones for gold and mana regeneration.

From mid to late game, you would want stronger items which are also more expensive, like the magic power item Holy of Holies for mages or Fenrir’s Tooth to increase physical attack.

Most items in the game are passive — meaning if you equpi them, they automatically give you the additioanl stats — but some like the lifesteal item Bow of Slaughter and the damage immunity item Arctic Orb, need to be activated to utilize their effects.

A player can equip a total of six items. A Quick Buy option will appear on the top right area of the player’s screen for recommended items or pre-ordered items.

Only components of pre-ordered items will be displayed on the Quick Buy option. For instance, pre-ordering War Boots will show Boots of Speed and Dagger on the Quick Buy.

Skills

Each hero has one passive skill and three active skills, including their ultimate.

Passive skills grant heroes additional stats. For example, Arthur’s Paragon gives him 88 armor. There are also passive skills that require certain conditions to be fulfilled, like Lindis’ Tread Softly which temporarily increases her movement speed and strengthens her normal attack whenever she passes through a brush.

Meanwhile, active skills can be cast depending on the situation, and have an average 10-second cooldown. Some skills have longer cooldowns, especially those do not require the use of mana. Skill effects vary from buffs, crowd controls, heals, movement, to damage and damage reduction.

The third skill is the strongest in a hero’s kit, and it is called the ultimate skill. Ultimates have longer cooldowns and can turn around the results of teamfights when used in the right situation at the right time.

AoV players start the game with one active skill. As players gain experience and level up, they gain a skill point that can be used to strengthen other skills.

Talents

Talents are abilities that sustain heroes during battles. Talent cooldowns range from as short as 30 seconds to as long as 120 seconds.

  • Sprint – players gain 70% movement speed which decays over time. Use this to escape dangerous situations or to chase enemies.
  • Execute – deals damage equal to 16% of the HP the enemy hero has lost as true damage. Execute is ideal for dealing the final blow.
  • Punish – this talent will greatly help assassins as it deals 800 true damage to minions and monsters and stuns them.
  • Roar – attack speed will increase by 60% and attack damage by 10% for five seconds.
  • Heal – you and nearby teammates regain 15% HP and 15% movement speed for a short while.
  • Disrupt – structures will be disabled for five seconds. Disrupt is very useful during under-the-tower teamfights.
  • Daze – enemies affected by Daze will be stunned for 0.5 seconds, and their damage dealt reduced by 40% for two seconds. This talent can be used when initiating a clash.
  • Purify – aside from removing all debuffs and control effects, Purify also grants users brief immunity against these effects.
  • Flicker – teleports your hero to a short distance.

Talents unlock as players level up their AoV accounts. The last talent, Flicker, unlocks at level 17.

Runes

These magical stones called Runes enhance heroes’ skills from various aspects. Depending on the players’ style and equipped hero, Runes can be combined and customized.

At least four types of Runes exist in AoV.

Veda

This rune magic line is suitable for ranged heroes like archers and mages.

  • Holy Summoner – sends in a Fairy familiar to give additional damage. The Fairy automatically attacks the enemy after a number of consecutive normal hits.
  • Holy Thunder – the first normal attack or ability that lands on an enemy calls forth a strike of lightning that deals damage.
  • Sacred Protection – players will temporarily gain movement speed, shield, and magic life steal when they take damage equal to 30% of their maximum HP.

Lokheim

Take this rune if you are playing as melee, warrior, or assassin.

  • Desperate Duel – movement speed is gained by hitting enemies. Desperate Duel stacks up to ten times, where the hero gets healed and gains armor pierce and magic pierce at the maximum stack.
  • Curse of Death – gives opponents a curse buff that causes magic damage to all targets within a range.
  • Devil’s Awakening – reduces cooldowns of other skills when the ultimate is used. This rune also grants cooldown reduction and increases damage dealt.

Afata

Players can try equipping the Afata rune line to support and tank heroes with crowd control skills.

  • Nature’s Rage – any immobilizing ability inflicted to an enemy will also cast a burn effect.
  • Explosive Shield – gains a stack whenever damage is taken. At 20 stacks, an explosion will set off that stuns enemies. Players also receive a boost in healing effect.
  • Forest Wanderer – players regain health and mana shortly after exiting combat. The next normal attack also slows enemy movement speed and reduces enemy damage.

Human

Suitable for almost all types of heroes in AoV.

  • Endless Cycle – instantly resurrects your hero in the game. Resurrected heroes will spawn back to the base. Endless Cycle can only be used three times in a match.
  • Visceral Boost – useful for getting additional gold and experience during the early game. Spawns at level 2 until level 12.

Runes unlock at player level 5.

Screenshot by: Kristine Tuting/ ONE Esports

Arcana

Later on in the game, the concept of Arcanas will be introduced to players at player level 7 and will be added to the Armory alongside items, talents, and runes.

Arcanas are attributes that improve the base statistics of your hero. There are three types of Arcana:

  • Red – increases hero attack
  • Purple – improves HP recovery
  • Green – focuses on defense

Arcana attribute levels range from I to III, III being the highest. The higher the level of the Arcana, the greater are its bonus effects to heroes.

Having Arcana bonuses make a big difference during the early minutes of the game. Arcana can be bought in the shop or obtained through achievements.

Arena of Valor (AOV) Beginner Guide

Arena of Valor is Garena’s very first mobile MOBA offering and we can comfortably say that it’s no slouch on the features or fun.

Especially if you happen to be a fan of DC Comics!!

Yes, in Arena of Valor you can play as Batman, The Joker, Superman, or Wonder Woman.

The interesting part is that there are certain features in the game that you won’t find in other MOBAs.

For example, the 1v1 match against an AI opponent. Such a match type has a couple of benefits.

To make things more interesting, the game works great while playing it in Bluestacks.

Game Mechanics

There’s a lot to this game so this guide will go over the various aspects of the game in detail.

The Main Screen

You’ll be controlling all the setups and various other aspects of the game from here.

Starting in the top left corner, that’s the account information screens. You’d see it as your profile picture from Facebook.

You’ll find various settings and details about your account here. DO PAY ATTENTION to your Credibility Score.

The part you want to pay the most attention to is showing in the middle and the upper right area of this screen. Garena takes this stuff VERY SERIOUSLY. It’s to the point where while checking things, I received a message about another player that was reported as being AFK during a match who was teamed with me. Apparently that player has a lower Credibility Score and was temporarily banned according to the message. So don’t say you were not warned!!

Whenever you see red colored dots (with or without numbers) on the screen, it means you have something to collect or there’s a notification about some part of the game. So check them as soon as you find them. From the top middle to the top right corner you’ll see the in game currencies. Use them WISELY.

Next is the Settings button.

As you can see on the left side, you can setup various options to your liking. See about raising or lowering settings to improve game performance if needed. Next is the Wi-Fi icon. That’s another one to pay very close attention to. If that turns red, click on it to check it. IF you have a high enough ping, there’s a chance the game won’t let you enter into certain matches. IT IS for your own good that the game has this feature. You don’t have to worry about the battery icon since this is all on BlueStacks!

From the top to bottom on the left of the main screen you start with the Shops.

When you first start playing Arena of Valor, and many other games, it’s pretty easy to be tempted to spend like crazy. The recommendation is to control that urge!! At least long enough to make sure you’ve checked rewards from any events and the tutorials and the Road to Glory. There’s no sense in buying a hero if you’re just going to get it for free later!! As showing in the above screen shot, getting gems isn’t hard at all. The Gem Shop has various goodies for you to try out. Again, don’t go hog wild because the red gems are not THAT easy to get!!

Next is the heroes’ screen where you can check out and even buy heroes. The heroes that you own will be showing first and sorted initially by the Proficiency. The drop down list box showing that has a few other sorting options.

When you’re checking out a particular hero, there’s a button to try out the hero in Practice Mode. That Practice Mode is a pretty decent way to try out that hero. You won’t gain anything beyond knowing how the specific hero skills work. IF you don’t own a hero, this is your only method to try before you buy.

The next option down the line in the main screen is the Armory. This will allow you to setup your heroes’ equipment on a 1 by 1 basis. You can setup equipment for heroes you both own and don’t own.

Download Arena of Valor (AOV) on PC

The Talents are the second part of the Armory. These are additional skills which are unlocked as you level. Once the Talent is set, you simply click the back button and it becomes the default. You can change your Talents directly before a match starts.

Even though it’s not showing in the main screen shot above, the next option is the Arcana.

Arcana are coin type items you gain as rewards or you can buy them. They’re boosts for your heroes. They are color coded as red = attacks, purple = HP purposes, and green = defenses. The Recommended tab shows recommended Arcana setups for each hero. You can have several pages of Arcana all setup to use and switch between before a match starts. You unlock more and more Arcana slots to use when you level up your account.

Next you have the Backpack which is your inventory. You’ll find all the items you’ve gained while playing. It’s pretty straightforward stuff!! The last part is the Guild section.

The Guild section offers you a way to either join a guild or make one. As showing in the above screen shot, there’re various details about each guild. If the particular guild you have highlighted is not full, you can click the Apply button in the bottom right corner. The recommendation is to join a guild when you’re first starting out.

At the bottom right of the main screen shot far above, you’ll see those little red dots that were mentioned previously. They appear in the bottom right of the main screen often. In the middle of the main screen is where all your action is going to happen.

The Casual Matches

There’s a wide variety of match setups found in here. As mentioned above, you can also setup a 1v1 match against an AI opponent. The benefits are that you DO gain gold and EXP from these types of matches. The other benefit is that it’s much better practice with a new hero than the Practice Mode.

Ranked Matches

It’s exactly as the name implies. If you want to get to the top of the rankings, you’ll have to play ranked matches. Be warned, many players take these matches very seriously. So if you “misbehave” as mentioned in the Credibility Score above, don’t act surprised when your penalties start racking up.

Training Camp

Again, it’s as the name implies. The Practice Mode is found in here as well as the Tutorial Mode and Guide. The Guide is not so info packed. But at least it tries to tempt you into buying things in the Shops!! Do yourself a favor and complete the Tutorial Mode as soon as you can. The rewards are not bad at all!!

Road to Glory

This is a reward system based on the number of times you play. Do yourself a favor and check it!!

Notice the middle right side of the screen shot. See the bluish coloring?!! It means there’s more than those 3 heroes are your rewards. Swipe it to the left and right to see the rest of the rewards. Do make note of the game modes listed at the bottom of the Road to Glory screen.

Why play this using BlueStacks?

Bluestacks offers 2 help methods for Arena of Valor players. These are the Key Map setup and the MOBA mode. A key map is a way for an emulator to simulate taps on the screen of a mobile device using your keyboard. BlueStacks has a key map already configured and ready to use for Arena of Valor.

Take a look at the screen shot above showing the default key map for Arena of Valor. Don’t worry about Batman!! When playing the game, if you press Q on your keyboard, your heroes’ first skill is activated. If you press the space bar on your keyboard, the heroes’ basic attack is activated. The numbers 1 to 3 are pressed to increase a skill’s level. The fun part is that you can change this all you like. You can add in simulated screen taps by simply clicking somewhere. You can remove the defaults or anything you place by clicking the X next to each tap spot you’ve placed or moved. When you’re happy with the key map setup, don’t forget to click the Save button! The real benefit is when a player is using a gaming mouse and/or keyboard. Those things are built to be highly responsive. That’s what you’d want while playing.

The MOBA mode allows for the use of the mouse to simulate PC MOBA style playing in BlueStacks. So those players which are very used to playing games like DOTA and/or LoL should have zero problems playing Arena of Valor on PC using BlueStacks.

When you start the game in BlueStacks, you’ll be offered a choice of either MOBA mode or WASD mode. Pick whichever one you’re most comfortable with. To make sure, try them both when you get the chance!!

Beginner’s Guide | In-game questions | Arena of Legends

2. In-game questions

3. Beginner’s Guide

Beginner’s Guide

This genre of games is interesting in that it provides for the construction and selection of a team in battles, planning, selection of a strategy for the development of the player’s team and battle tactics in accordance with a new enemy. The Arena of Legends is built according to almost all the canons of RTS strategies (Real Time Strategy) with elements of RPG (Role Playing Game) and TBS (Turn-Based Strategy).

Heroes

Each player collects a team of five heroes. The full list is available in the «Heroes» tab. Each hero has four abilities (skills) that can be developed. The first ability on the list is the ultimate, the only skill that you activate in combat on your own. The other three are used automatically. The level of skills increases for gold.

Hero level

Hero level cannot exceed the level of the lord (except for the training stage at the beginning of the game). You can get hero experience in the following ways:
1. Campaigns. For completing campaign missions, you get hero experience and other items.
2. Potion of experience. The item can be obtained in the experience mine, for completing campaigns, in the store and adventures.

Equipment

A hero’s equipment affects his stats. Each hero can wear six things, after which the opportunity to increase the rank of the hero opens. There are nine ranks in total.

Soul Shards

By collecting soul shards, you can increase the number of stars of the hero. This upgrade adds a hero’s stats, making him stronger in combat. After collecting the required number of soul shards, you can open a new hero or improve an existing one. A window will display a list of which parameters of the hero have improved.

Attention! When you receive a whole hero that is already on your list, you will receive their soul shards. The number of fragments depends on the number of initial stars of the hero. This rule also works for promotions in which the game offers you to buy a hero.

Receiving Soul Shards:
1. Shop arena. Defeat enemies in the arena to earn [Valor Points] that can be spent on Soul Shards. The currency is also sent to your mail as a daily reward for the league.
2. Arena chests.
3. Guild shop. Participate in the Guild Event and earn [Alliance Points], which can be exchanged for Soul Shards.
4. Chests in the city. You can purchase a Golden/Legendary/Astrology Chest and get
shards or a whole hero.
5. Market. Here you can buy hero shards for crystals.

Getting one or another hero depends on the player’s league, and the league depends on the player’s rating in the arena. The higher the league, the more types of hero shards you can get or buy.

Lord’s Equipment

The lord also has a set of armor that increases the performance of the whole formation, and they can be equipped after reaching a certain level. In combat, you can use the weapon of the lord, which imposes a positive effect on your formation or damages the formation of the enemy. Weapons can be upgraded or collected using shards, which can be obtained in the [Trial] event or bought on the market.
