For those of you who prefer to build more compact PCs, you will need a Mini-ITX motherboard. This ASUS ROG Strix X570-I is a solid foundation for such a build and the Ryzen 9 5900X processor. This is the big one. The ASUS ROG X570 Crosshair VIII Formula sounds like a monstrous motherboard, and that’s because it is. It’s actually complete overkill for most systems but will work well with the Ryzen 9 5900X. Highlight features include high-quality components for stable overclocking, as well as a heatsink block that can be connected to your custom water-cooling loop. It’s quite literally insane.

Motherboard Requirements for Ryzen 9 5900X Processors

For AMD’s Zen 3-based Ryzen 9 5900X processor, you’ll need a motherboard with an AM4 socket and a compatible chipset.

Motherboards for AMD processors are made with chipsets provided by AMD. Each chipset offers a unique set of capabilities. However, motherboards must explicitly support features and capabilities for you to use them. Verify that a motherboard supports the features and capabilities you desire.

Ryzen 5000-series CPUs, which includes the Ryzen 9 5900X, are compatible with all 400 and 500-series consumer chipsets. Supported chipsets include the X570, B550, A520, X470, and B450.

To use Ryzen 5000-series CPUs with the 400-series chipsets, you’ll need an updated BIOS. You either need to purchase one with an updated BIOS, perform the update with an older supported CPU installed, or use the USB BIOS Flashback feature (if available).

Products that ship with a compatible BIOS are typically marked as «Ready» for Zen 3 / Ryzen 5000 series / 4th Gen processors.

The older X370, B350, and A320 300-series chipsets are generally not compatible, out of the box, with Ryzen 5000-series CPUs. However, these 300-series chipsets may be supported by some motherboard manufacturers, when using a specific compatible BIOS.

The X570 is our recommended chipset for the Ryzen 9 5900X CPU, as it provides the most functionality and full support for PCIe 4.0. The Ryzen 9 5900X CPU also supports PCIe 4.0.

Only the X570 chipset provides PCIe 4.0 lanes via the chipset.

When using motherboards with the B550 chipset, you still have PCIe 4.0 lanes from the CPU for PCI-Express slots; however, all PCIe or M.2 slots connected via these chipsets will run at PCIe 3.0 speeds.

Other Considerations When Choosing a 5900X Motherboard

In addition to selecting a motherboard with a socket type and chipset compatible with the 5900X, here are a few other things to consider when picking a motherboard. Some of these considerations will help determine the best chipset to use.

Video Output Port

The lack of a «G» in the 5900X model name indicates that the CPU does not have integrated graphics support and requires a separate graphics card. Because it doesn’t have integrated graphics support, you won’t need a motherboard with a video output port (e.g., HDMI).

Storage: M.2 Slots and SATA Ports

NVMe M.2 cards are the latest and fastest form of SSD storage. However, you need to ensure that your motherboard includes enough slots.

The X570 and B550 chipsets support the most PCIe lanes, which means that motherboards with these chipsets are likely to have the most x4 NVMe M.2 slots available.
Keep in mind that the X570 is the only one of the two that supports PCIe 4.0 via the chipset.

Connectivity

USB

Make sure that the motherboard provides enough USB ports at your desired speeds.

The X570 can support the most USB ports at USB 3.2 2×1 (10 Gbps) speeds. Motherboards with the X570 chipset can support up to 12 of these ports. The B550, in comparison, only supports up to 6 at these speeds.

The devices that are likely to need the high bandwidth rates will typically be limited to storage devices and high-resolution video devices.

Audio

Make sure that the motherboard has your desired audio outputs.

For example, if you have a surround sound system, ensure that it comes with rear and center speaker ports.

If your audio equipment requires an optical input, consider getting a motherboard with this port.

Alternatively, you can purchase a separate PCIe or USB sound card to add additional port types such as optical or RCA.

Form Factor

Motherboards typically come in one of three form factors. ATX is the most common motherboard form factor for a desktop PC.

You might also consider Mini-ITX or MicroATX form factors to build a mini-PC. Keep in mind that these smaller form factors typically have fewer PCIe card slots, fewer RAM slots, and can not support as many storage devices.

These smaller Mini-ITX and MicroATX motherboard form factors are backward compatible with standard ATX cases. They use a subset of the ATX mounting holes. You can also use Mini-ITX motherboards in MicroATX cases.

You will need a computer case compatible with your motherboard form factor.

PCIe Expansion Slots

The X570 and B550 chipsets provide the most flexibility in the 500-series, allowing multiple graphics cards in the dual x8 configuration at PCIe 4.0 speeds.

The A520 chipset, on the other hand, is very limited, allowing for only a single graphics card via the slower PCIe 3.0 x16 slot.

Looking for a decent motherboard for AMD Ryzen 9 5950X

Shortly before the release of the new 12th generation of processors from Intel, I decided that my next processor would be the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X. Here you can read my thoughts on the matter.

At that time I had a good (as I then thought) motherboard MSI X570A-Pro based on the same chipset. Two years ago, when I chose it, I thought that this board would normally allow me to unlock the potential of all future AMD processors on socket AM4. It should have unlocked the potential of AMD Ryzen 95950X, but became the weak link. Now I understand that I was wrong. Cheap motherboards are not designed for this. Entry-level motherboards allow you to work normally with entry-level processors, but such boards will hold back top-end processors with their not very well-thought-out design decisions (although these decisions may not have been chosen at all by chance).

recommendations

In particular, take the MSI X570A-Pro board. At the time I bought it (August 2019years) there were no normal reviews on it. I was then tempted by the fact that it has 10 power phases, and thought that this would be enough for future upgrades to 12-16 core processors. But I was cruelly deceived by marketers. There are only four real power phases per processor. There are ten power lines, of which two go to the SOC, and each of the four real phases goes to two processor power lines. Budget X570 VRM Thermal Performance, A Must Watch For Potential Buyers!» from the Hardware Unboxed channel were not available. Otherwise, I would definitely have chosen some other motherboard. MSI, in the case of budget motherboards based on the X570 chipset, has put a big pig on the buyers. As a result, under a compute load with the default BIOS settings, I achieved the same 103 degrees on the VRM with a CPU load of just 152 W:103 degrees Celsius on the VRM. In order not to kill the board with high temperatures, as a temporary solution, I limited the maximum processor performance in Windows to 99%.

At the same time, the peak consumption of the processor decreased from 152 W to 131 W, and the average from 135 W by one and a half times (up to about 80-90 W). is definitely not what I want from the 5950X.

I want to get at least 4000 MHz from it on all cores under load. Therefore, I decided that the motherboard should be changed to a normal one. I made for myself the following criteria for choosing a motherboard:

1. Price — no more than 35 tr.
2. VRM temperature under load of all processor cores during overclocking should not exceed 60 degrees.
3. At least two M.2 and six SATA connectors.
4. Desirable absence of a fan on the chipset.
5. Chipset and processor communication via PCI-E 4.0 interface is desirable
6. Wi-Fi is desirable.

As a result, after looking through a lot of reviews and related materials, I chose the following boards (in alphabetical order):

1. ASRock X570 PG Velocita
2. ASRock X570 Taichi Razer Edition
3. Asus ProArt X570-Creator WIFI
4. Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero (and another review)
5. Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master

900 90 In terms of VRM temperature, the clear leader is the Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero. Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master and Asus ProArt X570-Creator WIFI are in second place. The rest lose a little. But Asus Dark Hero costs from 35 to 53 roubles, which is more than the amount that I put in my budget. ASRock X570 Taichi Razer Edition and Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master are out of stock. The ASRock X570 PG Velocita is a good choice for $20-23, but the VRM is 11 degrees hotter than the Asus.

Regarding Asus ProArt X570-Creator WIFI. This is a great choice for its 27-33 TRM PRART X570-Creator WiFi, in addition to high-quality VRM schematic equipment, there are 3 m.2 connectors, two network ports of 2.5 and 10 Gbit/C and two porterbolt 4.

I even almost ordered it, but I decided to think again. After weighing all the pluses in the form of a large number of connectors on this board, I came to the following conclusions: I personally do not need these connectors in the coming years.

10 Gigabit port and Thunderbold tempted me, but I didn’t succumb

Internet speeds from home providers are unlikely to exceed 1 Gbps in the next 5 years. I do not plan to build a 10 Gigabit home local network in the coming years, so I do not need a 10 Gigabit port.

And after looking at the cost of various containers for hard drives with Thunderbolt interface, I decided that I also don’t need these devices for such money (connecting one drive will cost $ 200), so there is no point for me in the Thunderbolt 4 interface now. Perhaps in a few years the situation will change, but that will be another story.
