Why GTA Online Doesn’t Work For You Anymore

By
Kyle Gratton

Some GTA Online players may have found that the game no longer works, because Rockstar has shut down the servers on its original platforms.

A subsection of Grand Theft Auto Online players may have found that the game no longer works for them. Unfortunately there is no remedy for the situation, since developer and publisher Rockstar Games has shut down the servers for specific platforms. As of December 16, 2021, GTA Online is no longer playable on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

GTA Online launched shortly after Grand Theft Auto V‘s release in 2013. At this point, GTA Online has become significantly more popular than the game it was initially attached to, and has become something of its own entity. The multiplayer sandbox has survived for 8 years with continuous updates and content drops, whereas GTA 5 has received no significant expansions with its subsequent rereleases on new platforms. Even content featuring GTA 5‘s protagonists, such as The Contract, which brought plenty of new songs to the game recently, has been released for GTA Online instead, starring players’ custom characters.

Rockstar Games made the announcement back in June, exactly six months before the PS3 and Xbox 360 servers would go offline. The player base on these platforms have likely been dwindling for a long while, since the industry is now two generations ahead, and the game has undoubtedly begun to outgrow the hardware. The GTA 5 single-player game can, of course, still be played offline, but many Rockstar online services tied to the PS3 and 360 have been shut down. These include website stat tracking and leaderboards for that generation of Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noire as well.

For over a year when it originally launched, Grand Theft Auto Online was exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, since those were the only platforms that GTA 5 could be played on. It would take roughly 13 months for both to come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and another five months before PC players had a chance to play. GTA Online is still going strong (and is presumably still incredibly profitable), and is expected to come to the new generation of consoles — the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S — in March 2022.

The game has come so far since its original incarnation in 2013, making it a bittersweet ending even though it may be frustrating for those who still played on the PS3 and 360. There appears to be no form of send-off or fanfare for the end of this era of GTA Online, though Rockstar isn’t exactly unfamiliar with such practices. When the new, almost completely broken GTA: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition came out, Rockstar removed the classic GTA games from sale on digital storefronts. The case is a bit different for GTA Online since the game is ongoing, but it’s a bit sad that the game has left its original platforms behind.

Petition · Please Don’t Shutdown GTA 5 Online PS3 & Xbox 360 Servers · Change.org

This petition is for Rockstar Games to KEEP the Online services for GTA Online on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and to NOT end it by Dec. 16, 2021. GTA 5 Online for PS3 & XBOX 360 was the old generation. Many of us first started playing on the old generation consoles and making new friends and the way. People have so many memories playing GTA 5 Online on PS3 & Xbox 360. A lot of people across the world CAN’T afford the next-gen consoles such as PS4 & XBOX One. This gives a chance for many more people to be able to play GTA 5 without having to spend more than can even afford. Some people don’t want to play next Gen GTA 5 Online because of the crazy updates. These updates range from Flying cars to Overpowered weapons in the game. We would like to be able to have the original NON-Updated GTA 5 Online. People would like to be able to play the classic original GTA 5 Online and know how it all started. Many say » Move on » well not that easy when you have great memories with friends, family members. Amounts of us grew up and playing the original GTA 5 Online. It’s sad to hear the news about this when people didn’t even think this would ever happen. We bought the game and we should be able to play it, even online. We are all going to be super heartbroken on Dec. 16, 2021. We understand the money part but we paid for what we got and we should be able to take it online. The old gen GTA 5 Online is the classic version. This means people can move back and forth from playing old gen and net gen to get that feeling.   GTA 5 Online on Next-gen consoles is a way different game and less realistic. Listen to your fan base and ask them what they want. People have been saying stuff such as » I will not buy GTA 5 on Nextgen! » and » If they shut down servers I will never play a Rockstar Game again!! » GTA 5 Online is not just a way to do what you want and Rockstar gets all the money, NO! GTA 5 Online is an open-world game for people to meet new players and have an awesome time. It shouldn’t be really about the money, it should be more about what fans think. We should have access to play GTA 5 Online Oldgen consoles (PS3 — Xbox 360). A huge amount of people don’t like big updates with the flying cars and the expensive properties you can get. Rockstar will lose money if they shut down old gen servers, People still play the game and buy shark cards and play normally without any issues. From 2013-2021 this game has been on for a total of 8 years! From GTA 5 Online (PS3/PS4/PC/Xbox360/XboxOne) Playing on GTA 5, Online Nextgen will not feel the same as old gen. Hearing the news about GTA 5 Online PS3 & Xbox 360 servers shutting down made a huge impact on people. This doesn’t feel real at all, it feels like we don’t want to believe it’s happening. The GTA 5 Online old gen lobbies are still all filled up! This shows how much players still play GTA 5 PS3 & Xbox 360 still. GTA 4 Servers seem to be filled too and Rockstar trying to shut down GTA 5 Online over GTA 4 Online… This doesn’t make sense to people. Others have grinded and played on their own hard-working GTA 5 Online player just get’s deleted for no reason? What made the decision of this all? We would like to know the real main reason why «GTA Online on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 servers will shutdown by Dec. 16, 2021» We like to be classic, fun, original gamers! We didn’t do anything to deserve this as we PAID for the game. We are all heartbroken from this and we do not know how to concentrate on what’s going on. I have many memories of GTA 5 Online on PS3 and Xbox 360 such as playing with my cousins and my friends, Playing Parkour jobs, and much more. We as a community do not know what to really say about this because we don’t know what will happen in the future as gamers. What we just want is this to just be not real and something that was miss understand. Us GTA 5 Players can’t afford Next-gen consoles and on top of that, we have to buy GTA 5 Again on Nextgen. This will leave us no choice but to move to other old gen games but will not be as fun as play our favorite game GTA 5. People want to know the feeling of playing without flying cars in the sky and way overpriced guns, properties, and much more. At the end of the day, we would like for Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive to NOT shut down GTA 5 Online PS3 & Xbox 360 Servers. Thank you

Grand Theft Auto Online problems: missing money/shark cards
