GTA 5 and GTA Online have finally arrived on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but for those of you who’ve been building your criminal empire on PS4 and Xbox One for the past few years will no doubt want to know how to transfer your accounts over to the new next-gen consoles.

Frankly, why wouldn’t you? The new next-gen versions of the game feature new graphics modes including up to 4K resolution, a framerate of up to 60 frames per second, improved texture qualities, HDR options and ray tracing, faster loading times, immersive 3D audio, platform-specific features, and more.

Initially, Rockstar was having a few issues migrating accounts, but now players can transfer without any issues, so read on, we’ll explain everything you need to know if you want to upgrade your Grand Theft Auto experience.

Can I transfer GTA 5/GTA Online saves between PlayStation and Xbox accounts?

Yes, you can. If you’ve previously been playing GTA 5 and GTA Online on Xbox One or PS4 you can choose to bring your save data over to the other console brand when you make your next-gen account transfer. To confirm this means PS4 players can transfer to both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One players can choose to transfer to Xbox Series X|S or PS5. This is done via a one-time transfer through Rockstar Games Social Club.

In addition, although most people know this by now, just to be clear, you cannot transfer Xbox 360 or PS3 saves to next-gen consoles.

How to transfer GTA 5 Story saves to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

Below you’ll find the steps you need to follow to transfer your GTA 5 Story mode save to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Do note, once the Save Game has been downloaded successfully to a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S console, no further uploads can be made from that account.

  1. Sign-up or sign-in to the Rockstar Games Social Club at www.rockstargames.com/socialclub.
  2. Under Settings, verify the preferred console account is linked to your Rockstar Games Social Club account
    • If you are transferring your save data from PS4 to PS5 you need to link your PlayStation Network account.
    • If you are transferring your save data from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S consoles you only need to link your Xbox Live account.
    • If you’re planning to transfer your save data from Xbox One to Ps5, or PS4 to Xbox Series X|S, you’ll need to ensure that both accounts are linked to your Rockstar Games Social Club.
  3. Now we need to upload your save game data.
  4. Open GTA 5 on your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One console
  5. Go to the Pause Menu in-game
  6. Choose Game and select Upload Save Game
  7. Select Sign-in to the Rockstar Games Social Club
  8. Select the Save Game > Upload the Save Game
  9. Confirm if the selected Save Game is the one you want to upload on the resulting alert screen.
  10. Wait for the upload to complete
  11. Once the Save Game finishes uploading, you will receive a message confirming its successful upload to the Rockstar Games Social Club
  12. Now we need to download your save data.
  13. Open GTA 5 on your PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S
  14. Open the Pause Menu in-game
  15. Select Game > Download Save Game
  16. Sign-in to the Rockstar Games Social Club with the same Social Club Account details used on your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One
  17. Select the Save Game uploaded to your account
  18. Confirm on the resulting alert screen that the Save Game selected is the one you want to download on the resulting alert screen
  19. Wait for the download to complete
  20. Once the Save Game finishes downloading, you will receive a message confirming its successful download to your console
  21. You will then be brought back into Story Mode
  22. DONE!

How to transfer GTA Online profile to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

Below you’ll find the steps you need to follow to transfer your GTA Online profile to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Do note, once your progress has been transferred from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, your migrated profile will no longer be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. This is also a one-time migration, so additional profiles cannot be transferred between PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PC in the future. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Sign-up or sign-in to the Rockstar Games Social Club at www.rockstargames.com/socialclub.
  2. Under Settings, verify the preferred console account is linked to your Rockstar Games Social Club account
    • If you are transferring your save data from PS4 to PS5 you need to link your PlayStation Network account.
    • If you are transferring your save data from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S consoles you only need to link your Xbox Live account.
    • If you’re planning to transfer your save data from Xbox One to Ps5, or PS4 to Xbox Series X|S, you’ll need to ensure that both accounts are linked to your Rockstar Games Social Club.
  3. Now you can migrate your profile through either the GTA Online Landing Page or Pause Menu once you have signed in to the Rockstar Games Social Club on your preferred console. Follow the on-screen steps.
  4. Keep in mind, any unspent purchased GTA$ are not eligible for transfer across platforms (i.e., PlayStation 4 to Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox One to PlayStation 5).
  5. An alert screen will let you know when the migration successfully completes.
  6. Players will then be brought to the Review Character screen where they can choose to start a new character or continue with their existing one.
  7. Choosing to continue with a new character will overwrite the existing character slot. If you have not created a new character via the Career Builder, you will be brought to the Career Builder selection screen.

GTA 5 ist nun auch für PS5 und Xbox Series X erschienen und Spieler*innen übertragen fleißig ihre Spielstände. Doch dabei kommt es zu Problemen.

Update vom 16.03.2022: Bereits gestern stießen Spieler*innen auf Probleme, wenn sie ihren Charakter in GTA 5 von der alten Konsole auf die neuen übertragen wollten. Wer seinen Spielstand von PS4 oder Xbox One nämlich auf den PC übertragen hatte und den Konsolenspielstand nun auf PS5 oder Xbox Series X/S schicken wollte, bekam eine Fehlermeldung. Das ist mittlerweile behoben. Nun stoßen Fans aber auf zahlreiche weitere Probleme bei der Charakterübertragung in GTA 5 auf PS5 und Xbox Series X.

GTA 5 Charakter übertragen: Migration kann nicht rückgängig gemacht werden – Crossplay nicht möglich

Wie man in den diversen Sub-Reddits nachlesen kann, scheinen sich viele Spieler*innen nicht bewusst zu sein, dass GTA 5 auf PS5 und Xbox Series X kein Crossplay anbietet. Wer seinen GTA 5 Charakter überträgt, kann dann also nur noch mit anderen Spieler*innen zocken, die auf der gleichen Konsole daddeln. Da die PS5 Mangelware ist, sind das noch nicht so viele, wie auf der PS4. Auch die Xbox Series X war nicht in Massen verfügbar.

Vielen fällt das Crossplay-Problem aber erst nach der Migration auf. Leider ist es nicht möglich, den Spielstand oder Charakter wieder zurück auf die alte Konsole zu übertragen. Fans müssen also warten, bis ihre Freund*innen ebenfalls eine PS5 oder Xbox Series X haben oder einen neuen Charakter auf der alten Konsole erstellen. Bei der Übertragung auf die neue Konsole wird der Charakter auf der alten PS4 bzw. Xbox One nämlich gelöscht. Bevor ihr euren Spielstand in GTA 5 für PS5 und Xbox Series X übertragt, solltet ihr euch daher ganz sicher sein.

Erstmeldung vom 15.03.2022: New York – GTA 5 erscheint am 15. März 2022 für die Next-Gen-Konsolen von Sony und Microsoft: die PS5 und Xbox Series X. Rockstar Games veröffentlicht damit das knapp neun Jahre Spiel zum dritten Mal für eine Konsolengeneration. Fans müssen aber beim Next-Gen-upgrade nicht von vorne beginnen, denn sie können ihren Speicherstand übertragen. Doch dabei gibt es bereits zahlreiche Probleme. Die Charakterübertragung schlägt bei GTA 5 für die PS5 fehl.

GTA 5: Charakter auf PS5 und Xbox Series X übertragen – Fans kämpfen mit Problemen

Was ist das Problem? GTA 5 erscheint zum dritten Mal – jetzt für die dritte Konsolengeneration. Zum Release 2013 erschien der Open-World-Titel für die PS3 und Xbox 360, kurz darauf wurde er auf die PS4 und Xbox One portiert. Bereits damals konnten Spieler*innen ihren Spielstand auf die neuen Konsolen übertragen. 2015 erschien GTA 5 mit GTA Online dann auch endlich für den PC. Auch diesmal konnten Fans ihre Spielstände von der Konsole auf den PC übertragen. PC-Spieler*innen konnten also einen Charakter von der PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 oder Xbox One auf den PC übertragen.

Nun erscheint GTA 5 für die PS5 und auch hier können Fans ihren Spielstand übertragen. In unserem Guide erklären wir euch, wie einfach ihr den GTA 5 Speicherstand auf PS5 und Xbox Series X übertragen könnt. Das geht allerdings nur, wenn ihr vorher einen Charakter auf der PS4 oder Xbox One hattet. PC-Spieler*innen können ihre GTA 5 Charaktere nicht auf PS5 und Xbox Series X übertragen. Und genau hier liegt das aktuelle Problem, warum viele Charakterübertragungen in GTA 5 derzeit fehlschlagen.

Viele Fans haben ihre Speicherstände nämlich von PS4 oder Xbox One auf den PC übertragen. Nun möchten sie diese Charaktere von der PS4 oder Xbox One auf die Next-Gen-Konsolen laden, doch die Übertragung funktioniert nicht. Viele Fans verfielen in Panik, denn den Charakter kann man jeweils nur einmal übertragen. Ist nun der gesamte Fortschritt verloren?

GTA 5: Charakter auf PS5 und Xbox Series X übertragen – Problem wohl behoben

Das sagt Rockstar Games dazu: Bereits am 14. März schrieb der Entwickler aus New York auf Twitter, dass er an diesem Problem arbeiten würde. Um 3 Uhr nachts deutscher Zeit berichtete der Rockstar Support auf Twitter dann, dass das Problem wohl behoben sei. Spieler*innen, die von PS4 oder Xbox One auf PC migriert sind und die Konsolenspielstände nun auf PS5 und Xbox Series X übertragen wollen, sollten dies wieder tun können.

Allerdings geht der Fortschritt, der auf dem PC erspielt wurde, verloren. Denn die Übertragung von PC auf die Next-Gen-Konsolen ist weiterhin nicht möglich. Fans würden also einen älteren Spielstand auf die neuen Konsolen übertragen müssen.
