10. It Takes Two

If ever there was any doubt that 2 player Xbox games weren’t really a thing in 2021, It Takes Two from Hazelight Studio staunchly proved the naysayers wrong. This is a fully co-operative larger-than-life adventure, where you and a friend take on the roles of a divorced couple who have been shrunken into dolls and must puzzle and platform their way back to their daughter. It’s one of the best 2 player games on Xbox because it’s chock full of inventive ideas, only getting more surprising as you progress from shed to garden to house.

Cody and May are constantly forced into scenarios where they must work together to reach the next area. Keeping you company along the way, though, are a swathe of charming characters. Many are your daughter’s toys that help provide further insight into how you can help. It Takes Two’s whimsical story is backed up by a gamut of mechanics that constantly shake things up – hence why it’s one of the best 2 player games on Xbox. You can’t go wrong!

9. Cuphead

Simultaneously a punishing 2D side-scroller and unabashed love letter to the cartoon serials of yesteryear, Cuphead is the ultimate boss rush game that isn’t afraid to kill you with charm… literally. One player takes on the role of the eponymous Cuphead while the other can jump in alongside as Mugman. Together you must learn the patterns of the various enemies you come across, running and gunning to see how far you can get.

What makes Cuphead stand out as one of the best 2 player Xbox One games is its inherently beautiful art style, which faithfully recreates the 1930s cartoon art style thanks to some meticulous work by developer StudioMDHR. This gorgeous aesthetic just so happens to be backed up by gameplay that is equally challenging and rewarding, never failing to put a smile on your face even as you’re forced to take on bosses over and over again.

8. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2

There were countless LEGO game candidates we could have picked for this list, but we settled on one of the most recent, greatly ambitious entries in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. As a follow-up to the 2013 original, it’s bigger and better in every way, further delving into Marvel’s back catalogue of obscure comic book heroes who comfortably sit alongside popular favourites like Spider-Man, Daredevil and the X-Men.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 tells an entirely original storyline free of the MCU’s usual constraints, challenging you and a co-op partner to do battle with Kang the conquerer across a split reality of iconic locations. You’ll bash, smash and puzzle-solve your way through each of them, honing the unique abilities of the 100s of superheroes featured here while having a blast doing it. When it comes to the best 2 player Xbox One games suited to all family members, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is an excellent choice!

7. Warhammer: Vermintide 2

When it comes to cult classic co-op games, the Xbox brand is most synonymous to the anarchic action of the Left 4 Dead series. Sadly, Valve refuses to treat us to a third entry, but luckily one of the best 2 player Xbox One games is a game that riffs of this same idea of first-person co-op and sets it within an incredibly deep fantasy universe. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 sees you and three others fend off endless hordes across 13 intense missions.

No co-operative play session in Warhammer: Vermintide 2 ever needs to be the same thanks to the wide suite of classes and weapon types available to you. Sure, you can choose to pick up a sword and start hacking rats in the hopes of making an impact, but why not pick up an Elven Spear or a longbow to better keep your distance? This variety is what’ll keep you coming back to Warhammer: Vermintide 2 for more, meaning it easily makes our list on the best 2 player Xbox One games.

6. Gears 5

The Gears of War franchise returned with a bang in 2019, charging the story ever-forward by this time focussing on new series protagonist Kait Diaz. Her journey of self-discovering is entirely playable in 2 player co-op, acting as the perfect foundation for you and a friend to wreak havoc amongst hordes of the Locust. This is the original cover shooting series and it doesn’t get better than this native Xbox series that continues to bring vast amounts of action.

Gears 5 features the same great mix of single-player campaign and competitive multiplayer, but also making a return is the series’ infamous horde mode. Here, you and a team of three others face off against endless waves of Locust seeing for how long you can last. Then new for Gears 5 is the Escape mode, which equally centres around quick reflexes and co-operation but challenges you to escape while doing it. Gears 5 is one of the best Xbox One games and one of the best 2 player Xbox One games, too.

5. Darksiders Genesis

While it initially seemed strange for Darksiders to go top-down for this co-operative spin-off, it only takes a few moments before you and a friend are ripping and tearing your way through hordes of angels and demons with ease. One person takes up the reigns of War while the other plays as Strife, Darksiders Genesis is one of the best 2 player Xbox One games because both play entirely uniquely, seeing pairs of gamers cause rampant destruction through multiple realms of the underworld.

Strife boasts two powerful pistols to keep enemies at bay from afar. War, meanwhile, wields his iconic Chaoseater sword to hack and slash his way up close. Darksiders Genesis might not be a traditional entry, but all the franchise’s hallmarks – like exploration, light puzzle-solving and satisfying combat – are successfully kept intact. Because of that, it serves as a bite-sized take on the series and one of the best 2 player Xbox One games out there.

4. A Way Out

Few 2 player Xbox One games are as inventive as 2018’s A Way Out, a third-person adventure that takes heavy inspiration from Prison Break fiction to set two players on the ultimate co-op adventure where the TV remains in split-screen mode the entire time. One of you will take on the role of Vincent, while the other steps into the shoes of Leo, and from here the unlawful pair undertake a cinematic adventure where you remain on the run and are required to work together to escape successfully.

One of the perks of A Way Out is that only one copy of the game is needed for two players to play together. Simply have your intended partner download the Xbox One demo, and both of you will be able to play through the entirety of the story without fear. It’s simply one of the most creative 2 player games on Xbox One, not least because co-op is the only way it can be experienced, preferably in one sitting where you and a friend will be invested from beginning to end.

3. Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is an absolute must for any die-hard fan of this always great Xbox series, bringing together every single one of the mainline entries and sprinkling in various new features that helps bring them up to date. The first three Halo game fully supports 2 player split-screen play, which makes taking the fight to the Flood and Covenant in an effort to save the world all the more fun.

For as good as all the more recent Halo games are, the second entry is the unabashed centrepiece of this selection. The full game has been completely redeveloped from the ground up with new gameplay elements and graphics so that it looks just like it released now rather than 10 years ago. The cutscenes have also been redone by the I world-renowned Blur studio, making it an essential play for co-operative buddies and one of the best 2 player Xbox One games.

2. Overcooked 2

If you’re an Xbox player who likes food and getting into arguments, both those ingredients come together in the inventive – yet highly volatile – Overcooked 2. Team17’s chaotic sequel makes several improvements to the culinary antics asked of two-player chef duos, as you must serve even more recipes to hungry clientele while dodging all manner of crazy obstacles. One minute you might be cooking on a hot air balloon, the next you may find yourself on a different planet. Either way Overcooked 2 is one of the best 2 player Xbox One games primed to challenge every gamer relationship.

In Overcooked 2 the onion kingdom once again finds itself in peril at the hands of the fabled Necronominomicon, who has cooked up a dastardly plan to threaten chefs everywhere. Your only option is to cook your way through a new gamut of crazy kitchen layouts, slicing, cleaning and serving while keeping up communication with your co-op friend. Overcooked 2 supports up to four players locally, meaning that there’s never a dull moment for all split-screen preferring party game fans. Overcooked 2 might cause friction but is an appropriate culinary challenge.

1. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

The most recent game on this list is also one of the best 2 player games on Xbox. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a fantasy-based spin-off of the Borderlands series, giving a much-needed shakeup of the trusted formula. Partake in a whacky adventure led by your Dungeons and Dragons DM Tiny Tina voiced of course by the incredibly talented Ashley Burch. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has really let Gearbox’s artists go wild with their new environments as a result of this new fantasy setting, and it really is a breath of fresh air from the relatively bland environments you come to expect from Borderlands. The writing here is on point as well with the usual zany humour you’d come to expect from this studio’s games; however it feels far more at home than it did in Borderlands 3.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is still at heart a Borderlands game meaning looter shooter action with up to 4 player co-op. Go from mission to mission gunning down as many enemies as you can as they satisfyingly explode into pools of loot! With more customisation than ever as a result of 6 classes and the addition of multi-classing, forge your role in your team as you enjoy one of the best 2 player games on Xbox.

Honourable mentions:

Rayman Legends

2D side-scrolling platformers rarely get any more fun or creative than Rayman Legends. Originally released on the Xbox 360 before making the jump to next-gen platforms, you and up to three friends can enjoy colour must dash, bash and crash your way across a range of levels that will have you hopping to the beat, searching for collectibles and much more. It’s the perfection of the chaotic formula first laid out in Rayman Origins, bringing all of that game’s levels into this one (alongside loads more) to make for one of the best 2 player Xbox games out there.

Streets of Rage 4

The side-scrolling beat-em-up action of Streets of Rage hadn’t been seen for decades until this fourth official entry came along. Luckily, the long wait was worth it. Streets of Rage 4 is an unabashed love letter to the original games that once again challenges you and a partner to bash your way through bad guys across a 2D plane. The pixel-perfect art style may have been replaced by a new comic book aesthetic, but Streets of Rage 4 should still pack a punch for 2 player Xbox enthusiasts everywhere.

Minecraft Dungeons

Looking for a more palatable version of Diablo’s dungeon crawling that you can share with all members of the family. Minecraft Dungeons is a colourful option that easily fills that slot, presenting the popular franchise from a whole new top-down view and having you and friends adventure through it. Up to four players can slay through creepers together either online or locally on one console, trying to find new loot that improves your character’s stats. Minecraft Dungeons is breezy fun, hence why it narrowly misses out on a spot on our list of best 2 player Xbox games.

Unravel Two

The first Unravel was a charming puzzle-platformer that focussed on a woolly teddy trying to survive in a dangerous and hostile world. They did this by swinging over obstacles, hopping over platforms and flicking the odd switch. But if you found this adventure too much of a challenge the first time around fear not, as now the red Yarny is accompanied by a blue one. This brings an all-new dynamic to the 2D puzzles laying before you in Unravel Two

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

What’s better than one Borderlands game? Two of course. That’s why it’s 2015’s Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and not Borderlands 3 that makes our list. The visuals mightn’t be anywhere near as flashy, but the excellent package deal that is Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel still look great – especially when experienced with Xbox One X’s 4K and HDR improvements. Looting and shooting your way across planets with a friend has never played better.

Running at an impressive 60fps at 1080p resolution, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection represents one of the smoothest co-operative First-person shooters on Xbox One. Whether playing through Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel, you and up to three others will be able to build up their own vault hunter class and hone their abilities to be highly effective. These combine with the thousands of procedurally generated weapons to not make The Handsome Collection one of the best 2 player Xbox One games, but one of the most creative shooters on the platform.

Do you have a friend? I don’t … but if you DO, then you may want to play games with them. I hear friends are good for that sort of thing. Thankfully, many of the best Xbox games are in fact, playable with friends. I wouldn’t know of course, being the un-friendable wretch I am. But what I do know is what games I would play if I had any. So with that in mind, here are our picks for best 2 player games on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S!

Minecraft Dungeons — Xbox

Featured Favorite

Fancy yourself a heroic slayer of Minecraft baddies, but don’t fancy building a blocky version of the Sistine Chapel? Minecraft Dungeons may be for you. Playable with up to four friends online or locally, Minecraft Dungeons is an addictive and satisfying action RPG dungeon crawler with accessible easy-to-learn, tough-to-master gameplay.

Minecraft — Xbox

Build ’em up

No multiplayer compilation list is complete without an entry for the legend itself. Minecraft is an industry-leading co-op game where creativity and exploration flourish. Playable locally or online with up to ten friends, Minecraft is all about exploring gigantic randomized landscapes, discovering dungeons, crafting castles, and beyond. With Minecraft, you’re limited only by your imagination.

Monster Hunter: World — Xbox

Slay dragons

In Monster Hunter: World, you and your friends stalk dense forests, bitter icy peaks, and spore-riddled caves for all manner of giant beasts that (supposedly) threaten the local ecosystems. In the name of research, you will slay them! And build a growing arsenal of badass weaponry to do the job. Monster Hunter has deep combat and an incredibly satisfying gameplay loop, which can last you and your friends dozens, and maybe hundreds, of hours.

State of Decay 2 — Xbox

Apocalypse simulator

State of Decay 2 is a great game for teams of up to four online, set in a dynamic and evolving zombie apocalypse. Players have to work together to scavenge food, gear, and defend a base from increasingly deadly undead hordes. On top of regular zombies, there are super mutant «freaks» that take the danger up a notch, summoning additional baddies.

Destiny 2 — Xbox

Space opera

Destiny 2 is a popular first-person online shooter, with co-op events for between 3 and 6 friends. In Destiny, you play as a super-human Guardian, who channels a mystical energy to defend the remnants of humanity from encroaching aliens, trans-dimensional beings, and angry robots. The game features an infectious loot-driven progression system, which lets players build up their champions to fit unique playstyles.

Gears 5 — Xbox

Ultimate split-screen

Gears 5 is the quintessential Gears of War experience, complete with couch co-op for up to two players, or co-op online for up to three players. Gears 5 continues the saga, where the humans of Sera battle a relentless subterranean race known as the Locust, reborn as the Swarm. Gears combat is as satisfying as it is violent, taking place in gorgeous arenas with plenty of variety, enveloped with a solid plot.

Deep Rock Galactic — Xbox

Minecraft with guns

What if you were a badass futuristic dwarven engineer with an obsession with shiny alien minerals and the procurement thereof? Then you might be in Deep Rock Galactic. For teams of up to four friends, Deep Rock Galactic gives you an arsenal of increasingly powerful weaponry and tools for mining deep space asteroids for riches. The only problem is they’re also often swarming with angry aliens who want to murder you.

Streets of Rage 4 — Xbox

Classic co-op

If you’re old like me, then you’ll probably remember the good old days of playing Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) games on a couch. At some point, Sega remembered too, and released this awesome gem of a game ideal for two friends in local or online co-op. Play as one of several iconic characters and smash, bash, and crash your way through a crime-infested city, on a quest to bring justice. Streets of Rage 4 is slick, fun, and satisfying in equal measure.

Divinity: Original Sin II — Xbox

Virtual D&D

Divinity: Original Sin 2 and its predecessor are unique D&D-like games where teams of up to two players, either locally or online, can quest together in a sprawling and dynamic RPG world. With tactical turn-based combat, a winding story, great characters, and creative environments, Divinity Original Sin 2 is the Xbox’s best answer to Dungeons and Dragons-style co-op fun.

Dark Souls III — Xbox

A real challenge

Dark Souls III takes players to the war-torn kingdom of Lothric, where you and a friend can engage in jolly cooperation against challenging enemies, bosses, and even other players across several unique locations. Together, you can slash, stab, and dodge roll your way to victory. Make sure you acquire the White Sign Soapstone so you can play cooperatively.

Remnant: From the Ashes — Xbox

Gears, with teeth

What if Gears of War had a bit more of an edge? That’s what Remnant: From the Ashes looks like. Set across a variety of destroyed dimensions, Remnant: From the Ashes is a souls-like shooter with Gears of War-like third-person combat with deeper RPG progression and playstyle customization. This game can be incredibly tough, but also incredibly rewarding for co-op play.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War — Xbox

Battle the undead

Want something like State of Decay, but less complicated? Take a look at Zombie Army 4: Dead War, which pits you and up to four friends in Left 4 Dead-style gauntlets against raging Nazi demons and undead. Using a variety of WW2-era weapons with a sci-fi slant, Zombie Army 4: Dead War is a satisfying co-op shooter with a lot of variety, and heaps of delicious violence.

A Way Out — Xbox

Can you escape?

A Way Out is a unique co-op experience that puts each player in control of a prison inmate, and together, you need to coordinate movements and actions to figure out how to break (and stay) out. A Way Out is incredibly charming and has many lighthearted moments to enjoy, but the game’s story can also be very emotional and impactful at times as well. Overall, it’s a fantastic co-op game.

It Takes Two — Xbox

Get back together

It Takes Two puts you in the shoes of a divorcing couple that magically get transported into the bodies of dolls that their daughter made to represent them. As you and a friend work together to traverse various environments and complete puzzles in order to get them back to their bodies, you’ll experience a wonderfully complex narrative that involves the pair working through their problems and learning to love each other again.

Some of my favorite experiences on Xbox are in co-operative play with friends and family. When living in another country, being able to fire up Monster Hunter: World and jump on with my brother from across the world really slams home the benefits of modern internet-based gaming. Monster Hunter: World isn’t for everyone, and it can be quite tough to get into, but we did write a beginner’s guide for Monster Hunter: World to help you get started. If you and your friends can get into it, it’ll remain rewarding for dozens, perhaps hundreds of hours as you grind through the large menagerie of monsters and obtainable loot.

Additionally, I’ve found myself spending a ton of time with Minecraft Dungeons lately, particularly since it was updated with more robust endgame systems. Minecraft Dungeons doesn’t have a deep plot by any means, but it’s all about jumping on and quickly smashing hundreds and thousands of mobs with your friends with a wide array of cool weapons and powers. Minecraft Dungeons’ satisfying combat is supplemented with a wide variety of loot and environments, made further complex by a new endgame «Ancient Hunt» system, which lets you transform unwanted enchanted gear into portals to battle unique bosses for even more powerful loot.

If I had to personally recommend another game from this list, it would be Streets of Rage 4. The game represents the best of classic couch co-op gaming, with a dash of modern flair. Sega kept everything that was great about the original, with gorgeous comic book-style visuals and slick, classic beat ’em up combat, ideal for pairs of gamers who want to bash things together.

top games on one screen

Playing video games alone is great, but sometimes you want to share this joy with someone. It can be a brother or sister, friends, wife (husband) and even parents. Fortunately, there are enough games on Xbox One that two can play — not online, but on the same console, sitting side by side.

Xbox One is one of the best platforms for playing two-player games on the same screen. Firstly, there are a huge number of them here, and many of them are developed by their own studios. Secondly, on Xbox One, you can easily log into multiple accounts at once to use your saves and earn achievements. And thirdly, it is worth mentioning the Kinect — a very cool device that allows you to use the movements of the players themselves to control the movements of the body, thanks to which the game can become much more active and more fun.

So, here are the top 2 player games for Xbox One that you can play together — play together or fight each other.

Halo Series

The Halo Series dates back to the very first Xbox. The first part turned the very idea of console shooters upside down, and the “box” was often bought precisely because of it. Since then, Halo has received a huge number of sequels, spin-offs and the most diverse creative based on them, becoming one of the greatest series in the history of the gaming industry.

And recently, the entire series was released on Xbox One in a modern remaster as part of the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, a must-have for any console owner (especially since it is included in Xbox Game Pass). All games in the collection can be played together, and some — even four.

BUY NOW

Gears of War Series

The Gears of War series has been and continues to be an iconic Xbox series since the original Xbox 360 release in 2006, second only to Halo. A cooperative game has always been one of its most important elements.

For a two-player game on the same screen, any part will do. You can play through the campaign together playing as several of your favorite characters — for example, in Gears of War 4, one player plays as JD Phoenix, son of Marcus, and the second player plays as one of his comrades, Keith or Del. And after completing the story, you can have a great time in the absolutely fantastic Horde mode.

BUY

A Way Out

A Way Out is a unique game in many ways. It can be played only by two, and interaction with another player is an absolutely integral element of the gameplay. The plot of the game is simple — having escaped from prison, you are happy to change the situation. But in the process of escaping, you will have to work together with your friend to break away from the pursuers, get out of the firefights unscathed, and ultimately achieve your revenge. There are also many fun mini-games waiting for you along the way.

BUY

Resident Evil

Horror games rarely allow you to take a friend with you, but some parts of Resident Evil (for example, RE5, RE6, Revelations 2) can be completed entirely by two people. The game turns out to be truly collaborative — each player may have weapons or tools that are not available to another, so teamwork is the key to defeating hordes of the walking dead and saving them from torment.

BUY

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition

Divinity: Original Sin 2 can be played together from start to finish — great for family play on long winter evenings or just adventuring with your best friend. It’s bigger, prettier, and generally better than its predecessor, and the console-redesigned controls are surprisingly comfortable and intuitive. The game is also available on Xbox Game Pass.

If you’re a fan of epic RPGs, then you just don’t have the right to miss this masterpiece — thanks to a great story, a huge number of options for passing and an incredible turn-based combat system, this game is still the unrivaled king of the genre.

BUY NOW

Diablo III

Diablo III is another RPG, this time with an action twist, and one of the best co-op games out there. It’s equally great in solo and co-op, and it allows players to join and leave at any time without interrupting other people’s play. Up to four people can share the monster-hunting frenzy on the same screen.

The only drawback of playing on one screen is that when one of the players opens the inventory, everyone else has to just wait. But in any case, this game remains one of the eternal hits for co-op, so take a friend with you and go on a fearless journey into the depths of the underworld …

BUY NOW

Mortal Kombat 11

Playing with two players on the same screen doesn’t mean you have to be on the same team — there are plenty of games where you can fight each other. Of course, first of all, these are fighting games, and the most famous fighting game is, of course, Mortal Kombat.

In its more than 25-year history, the series continues to give gamers a great experience, combining cool dynamics, a sea of blood and freaky finishing moves, which found a worthy continuation in Mortal Kombat 11. The game received updated graphics and mechanics, the controls were finalized, and the combat system — improved. For new players, there is a great tutorial mode. Therefore, Mortal Kombat 11 is the best part and the best fighting game on Xbox One.

BUY

Tekken 7

The Tekken series is perhaps the second most popular fighting game after Mortal Combat. The seventh part is not happy with the plot, but is it important when playing fighting games together?

But the gameplay here is just better than ever before. Every combo, move, and even just a step looks amazing on the screen. Combat is very dynamic, fluid and doesn’t suffer from frame rate spikes in the middle of the game. Characters have a huge amount of customization options. A great alternative to Mortal Kombat 11 if you want a slightly different take on fighting games, but the main advantage is that the game is available on Xbox Game Pass.

Just Dance Series

Just Dance may not have stunning graphics, and the gameplay of the series, frankly, has remained virtually unchanged for a long time. But dancing with friends while running around the room and waving your arms is still insanely fun, especially if you have a Kinect. In addition, children really like the game, and a lot of hits will allow you to arrange a carbon monoxide dance party for several hours.

Rocket League

The release of this «football on cars» made a splash, and Rocket League definitely deserves a place in this collection. The game boasts an excellent cooperative mode where you can share the frenzy with friends.

Rocket League combines racing and football in an interesting way, but even those who do not consider themselves fans of «sports games» will surely enjoy it — it’s just insanely fun to play. And be prepared for sour mines of your friends if it is you who scores the goal.

Up to four people can play on one console, including co-op, which was not the case in previous races about Sonic.

Cuphead

Cuphead is a very cute looking game inspired by 1930s cartoons. But don’t let the deceptive appearance fool you — this is a hardcore platform shooter that will test your mettle. Each level can be completed together — the second player gets the role of Mugman, Cuphead’s partner.

Make no mistake — it’s not easier to play with two players: you deal less damage, and searching for a character in the middle of a screen filled with colorful projectiles will drive anyone crazy. The game is insanely cool, but requires a fair amount of patience.
