Microsoft has begun testing Night Mode on the current Xbox family of consoles.

Access to Night Mode is currently limited to select members of the Xbox Insider Program in the Alpha Skip-Ahead group. Other users will receive it later.

Night mode has many settings, including different levels of screen brightness and an optional blue light filter. Thanks to Night Mode, Xbox owners can now adjust the brightness of the LED on the power buttons of the controller and the console itself at their discretion — The LED backlight can be dimmed or turned off completely. Other Dark Mode features include automatic switching to a dark system theme and turning off HDR.

Xbox Night Mode can be activated manually or by a schedule that turns it on at sunset and off at dawn.

90,000 PS4 vs Xbox One. How Sony outplayed Microsoft — Igromaniya

In a month we will meet a new, ninth generation of consoles. And this means that the previous one is gradually becoming a thing of the past, and it is already possible to sum up the results of this era. How did the PS4 and Xbox One come into being — and how did their confrontation go? Let’s remember together.

History

First of all, let’s deal with the pedigree of PS4 and Xbox One, because the way they came out was directly influenced by the successes and failures of their predecessors.

For the seventh generation , the Sony came out on top as the PS1 and PS2 wiped out all competition and achieved incredible sales. Microsoft without a second thought buried the first Xbox in order to quickly jump into the HD era — and released Xbox 360 already in 2005. Sony did not consider it a serious competitor, proudly asserting: «The next generation will not start until we say so.»

Sony’s pride peaked at E3 2006 when the PS3 games were unveiled to the public and the price announced. “We are not interested in gimmicks [cheap tricks — approx. ed. ],” Kaz Hirai, the head of the American division of SCE, proudly declared, showing the Sixaxis controller, the main feature of which was the introduction of ridiculous motion-control. For the sake of it, Sony claimed, vibration had to be abandoned.

For a full-fledged version of the console, Sony asked for a considerable amount — $ 599. PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi stated that it was still cheap and added: “Isn’t it nonsense to compare the cost of dining in a canteen and in a fine restaurant?”. In another interview, he went further: «We want buyers to think, ‘yes, I’m willing to work harder to save up for it.'» Such statements could not but set the audience against Sony.

That same press conference with the giant enemy crab and «Riidge Racer!»

The launch of the PS3 was a natural failure. Games controlled by gyroscopes were terrible. The promised backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 disappeared very quickly from the console. The graphics in the games were much worse than what the fake pre-release trailers and screenshots promised. Sony initiatives like the PlayStation Home proved to be stillborn. The players missed the vibration. The developers howled like a wolf: programming for the intricate Cell processor was incredibly difficult. And Sony was not particularly eager to help them — it was especially difficult for foreign studios.

Meanwhile, the Xbox 360, built on a much more affordable architecture, enjoyed the love of developers — both Western and Japanese, previously loyal to Sony. While the PS3 stumbled at launch, the Xbox 360 already boasted successful, spectacular, high-tech games, a user-friendly interface, excellent online features, achievements … The face of the Xbox at that time was Peter Moore — a lively Englishman with tattoos Halo 2 and GTA IV . sharply contrasted with the Japanese snobs.

Ken Kutaragi and Peter Moore

Both Kutaragi and Moore resigned in 2007. But the deed was already done: the Xbox 360 confidently led the HD console race, and Sony, the former market leader, humbly trailed behind both Microsoft and the Nintendo , which gathered a record audience at the gimmicks that Sony is so proud of. denied.

The success of Wii led both of its competitors to start looking for their own gimmick that could be sold to the masses. In 2009In 2010, Sony struggled to sell everyone the PS Move , its equivalent of the Wii remote. In 2010-2011, “3D” sounded dozens of times from the E3 stage: then stereoscopic 3D support was sculpted into all games in a row. In 2012, it was the PlayStation Mobile service. All of these initiatives ended in failure—and perhaps for the better.

Because the Xbox 360 gimmick suddenly shot: the Kinect sensor in 2010 sold 8 million copies in a couple of months, got into the Guinness Book of Records — and thereby determined what the next Microsoft console will be.

Concept and announcement

During the design of the PS4 and Xbox One, the roles of Sony and Microsoft reversed, the former playing catch-up, the latter leading (especially in the key US market). The approach has also changed: this time, Microsoft proudly turned up its nose and turned away from gamers. Surely not the last role in this was played by the success of Kinect, which was made the central component of the new console.

The Xbox One was not meant to be just a game console, but the «ultimate home entertainment system», all-in-one (hence the name). Moreover, it was no longer created by the same team as the previous two Microsoft consoles, and this is noticeable. After the departure of Peter Moore, the gaming division of the company was headed by Don Mattrick, a man who did not believe in Xbox so much in his time that he almost blocked the presentation of the first Microsoft console at EA, where he then worked. Mattrick hasn’t been a developer since 90’s, and apparently he didn’t really care about games.

This read well from the first presentation of the Xbox One. Yes, they briefly showed Call of Duty , but paid much more attention to Kinect, Skype and the fact that the console is ready to replace the digital television receiver. Just imagine how convenient it is to watch sports programs with it!

The Xbox One announcement that buried the console. «Xbox is the new cooler»

Sport. TV. The obligatory Kinect that is always eavesdropping, even when turned off. The need to be constantly online (“Fortunately, we have a product for people who cannot connect to the network, it’s called the Xbox 360,” Mattrick said at the time). Inability to resell games and share them. Lack of backward compatibility. Stupid name, suggestive of the first Xbox. High price of $499. Delayed by a year launch in most countries of the world … The number of misses Microsoft made long before the launch of Xbox One was staggering.

And the reaction of gamers was not long in coming. Despite the fact that most of the above problems have been fixed in one way or another (some before the release, some after), the damage has already been done. And the Xbox One never recovered from it.

Don Mattrick left Microsoft a couple of months after the disastrous announcement of the Xbox One. He moved to Zynga , which under his management suffered huge losses, and then disappeared somewhere

In contrast, Sony did an exemplary work on PS3 bugs. Mark Cerny, an experienced developer, became the main architect of the PS4. He had a hand in creating engines for PS3 games and knew firsthand about all the problems of the complex architecture of Cell — so PS4 was originally created to be simpler, more affordable, similar to modern computers. And both Western and Eastern developers participated in this process.

It was a pure game console — practically devoid of unnecessary gadgets, working exactly like the previous ones. Sony gave gamers exactly what they wanted and profited from the Microsoft fiasco. A successful launch was in her pocket.

In the middle of the eighth generation, Microsoft had a reason to correct the backlog in numbers. Sony has unveiled the PS4 Pro, an improved version of its console capable of 4K resolution. Six months later, Microsoft gave its answer in the form of the Xbox One X, a heavyweight that significantly outperforms the PS4 Pro and pulls honest 4K where the “bug” had to be content with chess rendering. In the upper price segment, Microsoft won back the technological lead.

But that didn’t help her much. The main thing for the console was missing — exclusive games. Nine of the ten best-selling Xbox One games are multi-platform, with the only exception, Halo 5 , goes at the very end of the top. Of the 50 highest rated Xbox One games on Metacritic, there are only five exclusives (three Forza and two Ori that have already escaped on Switch).

Halo by 343 Industries and Gears by The Coalition generated noticeably less hype than the previous installments from Bungie and Epic . Quantum Break didn’t become a cult hit like Alan Wake’s . Scalebound didn’t come out at all. Sony had God of War and Bloodborne , Microsoft had Sunset Overdrive and Sea of Thieves : the games may not be bad, but much less hit and important. At the end of the Xbox One life cycle, the flow of high-profile exclusives has completely dried up. You can argue a lot about the quality of Death Stranding and The Last of Us: Part II , but Microsoft has not had anything comparable — and will not be in the foreseeable future.

This is not to say that Xbox management does not understand the importance of exclusives. Under Phil Spencer , Xbox Game Studios acquired more game studios than in its entire previous history: Mojang, Compulsion Games, inXile, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Playground, Undead Labs, Double Fine — and recently also Bethesda with all her subordinates. Other than Mojang, all of these developers have joined Microsoft in the last couple of years, so we haven’t seen the results of their labors yet (and the launch lineup for the Xbox Series is underwhelming). But in the future, the Microsoft platform will clearly no longer have the same shortage of exclusives as the Xbox One.

Sony, on the other hand, steadily continued to release hits, but the abundance of PS4 exclusives came at a high price: support for the PlayStation Vita portable console was sacrificed.

Service battle

At the dawn of the eighth generation, Sony and Microsoft revised their services somewhat. Xbox Live has traditionally required a Gold subscription for online multiplayer, PSN does not. But the PlayStation Plus subscription offered two free games per month for each of the Sony consoles. In 2013, the two companies equalized their offerings, with PS4 requiring PS Plus to play online, and Xbox Live Gold giving away multiple games each month.

Over time, PS Plus’s offerings have dwindled: in 2013, it gave away six games, and in 2020, after the end of the life cycle of PS3 and PS Vita, it gave only two. Same price, less sense.

Streaming ten years ago was seen as something very promising and promising, but both companies failed with it. Microsoft acquired Beam, renamed it Mixer, bought top streamers to promote the service — and promptly shut it down. Sony bought Gaikai and OnLive — and launched the little-used PlayStation Now service.

In the middle of the generation, Microsoft showed the world its main trump card — Xbox Game Pass . Instead of a measly handout of a couple of games rotated monthly, there’s a huge selection of hits available at any time for as little as $10 a month. Xbox One, which started as a «set-top box for TV», ended up offering its users a kind of gaming Netflix — a buffet at a ridiculous price. While Game Pass couldn’t save the Xbox One, it’s sure to be the strongest argument for Microsoft’s platform in the next generation.

Sony’s response was the PS Now expansion: the subscription began to include the ability not only to play via the cloud, but also to freely download PS4 games from a wide range. This did not help her much: PS Now has a very small number of subscribers, and the service has not expanded beyond a very small number of countries. Yes, it is still not available in Russia.

However, Microsoft behaves even more strangely here. The company recently launched Xbox Wire in Russian, but in 2019 it stopped selling Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass in Russia, and also got rid of regional prices — now Xbox One games can only be bought for dollars. While Sony and the PlayStation blog have been published in Russian for a long time, and the store operates in rubles.

Throughout the eighth generation of consoles, Sony dominated. Under Don Mattrick, Microsoft both lost exclusives and lost its lead in the console race with the PS3, and actually buried the Xbox One already at the announcement stage.
