Coop games xbox one: Best Xbox Co-Op Games To Play In 2022

Best Split-Screen Multiplayer Games On Xbox One, Ranked

In recent years the gaming industry has shifted away from split-screen experiences as major franchises known for their inclusion released new entries in their series without it. However, all hope is not lost as great split-screen experiences still exist on the Xbox One.

RELATED: Multiplayer Games To Try If You Like Overwatch

In fact, there are plenty of new and ongoing options, ranging from games where you work together to those where you’re trying to compete against the person next to you on the couch. So if you’re looking for the next great Xbox One game you can enjoy in proximity to friends and family, look no further than the selections we’ve curated below.

Updated November 19, 2022, by Seth Parmer: Since our last update, Halo Infinite’s Campaign Split-Screen Co-Op mode was canceled, and many other games have either released or needed to have their praises sung from the rooftops, having us update this again to keep you in the loop. There are many excellent games you can experience alongside your friends that we hope you find and enjoy with the list below!

23/23 Halo Infinite (Multiplayer)

While Halo Infinite’s split-screen campaign will unfortunately never be officially released, you can still kick back and play its multiplayer alongside your trusty Spartan companion. In the arena modes, you can play up to four players in split-screen mode, with Big Team Battle limited to only two players. Still, with the long-awaited Forge Mode finally out, the multiplayer co-op experience is about to get even better, which will hopefully be enough to soften the blow of the anticipated campaign features not making the cut.

Even with the glaring issues present in Halo Infinite, nothing quite matches the energy that comes from couch co-op multiplayer shenanigans with a best bud, sibling, or significant other. Plus, the multiplayer portion of Halo Infinite is free, so it’s worth giving it a shot at the very least. It’s worth noting that while the split-screen co-op mode for the campaign is dead, there will still be online co-op play added to it sometime in the near future.

The 10 Best Couch Co-Op Games for Xbox One

While split-screen co-op games aren’t as prevalent as they used to be, there are still many titles coming out that support this or are even built solely for couch co-op.

If you’re someone who enjoys split-screen co-op games, either because of the social element they bring or nostalgia from memories you have of gaming when you were younger, you’ll want to try out the best co-op split-screen games on Xbox One.

1. Diablo III

Despite its age, Diablo III is still a solid choice if you’re looking for a split-screen co-op experience and are a fan of the hack ‘n’ slash genre. The camera complements couch co-op gameplay, using a single screen rather than splitting it. You and your player two may need to stick fairly close together, but Diablo III does a good job of giving both players some freedom of movement.

2. FIFA (All Titles)

FIFA makes couch co-op a seamless experience, without the need to ‘split’ the screen as many other games require. This is because you and your friend will play the same game with the camera following whoever has the ball at the time.

FIFA has over 700 teams for you and your friend to choose between, giving you many match-up options to prevent gameplay from getting stale. Through the Tournament mode, you and your friend can take part in the Champions League, battling through the group and knockout stages against AI until finally meeting each other in the final.

3. A Way Out

While there are still a reasonable number of games that offer couch co-op as part of the experience, there are very few that are built entirely around it. A Way Out must be played with someone else either locally or online. In A Way Out, you and your friend will attempt to escape from prison without being caught. The story and gaming experience is all built around the idea of collaboration, making it a perfect choice if you’re searching for a couch co-op game.

4. Cuphead

A run-and-gun action game, Cuphead has a quaint art style inspired by 1930s cartoons that sets it apart from the other couch co-op games out there. Cuphead doesn’t split the screen like a lot of other couch co-op games, making the experience more seamless and connected. You won’t be able to venture too far away from your partner, but this won’t feel restrictive as, generally, you will want to be working together at all times.

5. Halo: The Master Chief Collection

The Master Chief Collection offers you all five of Bungie’s Halo games as well as 343’s first entry, Halo 4, for you and your partner to relive. The amount of content in this game can keep you tied over with couch co-op gaming for a while. Despite being a six-game extravaganza with an active multiplayer base, The Master Chief Collection is fairly cheap and is included on Xbox Game Pass. If you’d rather try Halo without paying, Halo Infinite is one of the best free FPS games available.

6. Star Wars Battlefront II

While many fans prefer the original Battlefront II (2005), DICE’s sequel to its Battlefront reboot offers a (canon) compelling campaign, expansive multiplayer experience, and even co-op challenges.

The campaign and online multiplayer, unfortunately, do not have co-op compatibility. However, there are specific co-op challenges and Battle Scenarios designed for split-screen co-op. You can play as regular troopers, special troopers, or even as heroes and villains like Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader, amongst many others, offering replayability.

7. Call of Duty (All Titles)

Call of Duty features split-screen on all titles, with some titles even offering up to four-player split-screen for when you have a group over. The Zombies mode featured on most Call of Duty games can be played on split-screen co-op easily, as can Spec Ops (Modern Warfare) and Extinction (Ghosts).

Only a couple of titles allow you to play the campaign on split-screen co-op, but the Zombies/ Spec Ops mode and local multiplayer offer a lot of content themselves. You can also head into online multiplayer on split-screen. Most older CODs can be picked up cheaply, but newer ones such as Modern Warfare (2019) and Black Ops: Cold War (2020) are probably your best bet for finding online matches.

8. Minecraft: Xbox One Edition

Minecraft has been around for over a decade now, and being a global phenomenon for many years means you’ve almost definitely heard of it. A bit of a reprieve from fighting against each other, you and player two can work together to build up a world that gives you a sense of pride and feels rewarding. There are multiple ways to play Minecraft with friends, and the Realms feature allows you to play across any platform.

Minecraft is fairly easy-going, while Survival does incorporate hunger and dying mechanics with various mobs you’ll have to fight against to gather resources, Creative can be a great choice if you and your gaming partner just want to build something and relax while hanging out.

9. Rocket League

Rocket League is a fast-paced, often hilarious game that sees you playing a football match in a car. The football is massive compared to the cars, so even on split-screen, you won’t have any trouble seeing what’s going on.

A light-hearted game that you and your friend can drop in and out of at any time, Rocket League offers fun, responsive mechanics with a balanced learning curve.

10. Borderlands 3

The most recent entry in the Borderlands franchise, the whole game is built upon co-op, and it handles split-screen seamlessly. The differing skill trees of characters based on class allow for many co-op builds and the ease of being right next to your player two will make communication easier.

The Shared XP and Money feature offer a matched rate of progression, meaning that regardless of skill difference you’ll both be at the same point in the game at all times. The instanced loot means that weapons and equipment found don’t need to be split between players, preventing any arguments or constant need to coordinate who has which items.

Enjoy These Xbox One Games With Your Friends

While split-screen gaming does seem to be on the decline, there are plenty of great couch co-op games for you to try. A lot of the best couch co-op games offer you the chance to play against each other as well as on the same side, allowing for a lot of variety in what you play.

If you and your gaming partner still aren’t able to find a game to play together, you may want to try mobile games that can be played regardless of any platform differences.

Co-op games on Xbox One

It’s great to play with friends — both in the same room and online via headsets. Few things compare to the feeling of total immersion in the game with the whole company. Older gamers remember with nostalgia the days of Halo on the first Xbox and Goldeneye on the N64, and even older ones — Double Dragon and Chip&Dale on the NES, known in Russia as Dendy. In this article, we’ve rounded up the best split-screen, single-console, and online co-op games on Xbox One. Everyone will find something to their taste.

Gears of War 4

Best two-player game on Xbox One

If you like blockbusters like Transformers and Pacific Rim, this is the game for you. Gears of War 4, with its simple storyline and complex, eye-catching graphics, is one of the best split-screen co-op games on Xbox One. It is generously flavored with beautiful videos that delight you after each victory over the boss or passing through a difficult section. A weak plot won’t be a problem — you and your partner will be too busy blowing up and shooting aliens. And in your submission there will be pumped-up comrades who will help you break through a lot of evil and terrible enemies.

At times the game lets you just punch your way through with a shotgun and chainsaw bayonet on a machine gun, but sometimes it takes a bit of strategic thinking. The key to getting through the most difficult moments is to use cover behind the rocks and roll to the next safe place. The main campaign will take two players about 10 hours to complete.

The graphics have been upgraded nicely, and on Xbox One you’ll get smooth 60fps. Each video has been remastered with 3D movie quality. One of the cool things about the Halo 2 port is that you can switch between old and new graphics on the go and see how much the game has been updated.

Another nice feature is that you can choose any mission at any time. This means you and a friend can enjoy the Halo series in any order you like by switching between Halo missions 1, 2, 3 and 4 like songs in a playlist. Buy one of the best split-screen Xbox One games and fall in love with Halo all over again. Incredible updated graphics, long play time and nostalgia make for a great game for two.

Number one on our Xbox One Split Screen Game Rankings is Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. This is the best of the few games on Xbox One that supports four-player split-screen. The Handsome Collection includes Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 2 and many DLCs. The best part is that both games support split screen for up to four players, so you can invite up to three friends and play all day and night. Don’t forget to order pizza.

Another great feature is that you and your friends can level up your characters alone or online on different consoles, and when you get together, download them and play together. Be careful — with the increase in the number of players, the health of the opponents also increases, so everything becomes proportionally more difficult — you will need to work together. The main feature of the Borderlands series is that it is not just a first-person shooter, but also a bit of an RPG, so you have to take care of the development of the skill tree and the improvement of equipment. With 12 diverse playable characters, 1080p resolution, and over 100 hours of story mode and side missions, this game is our top pick.

  • Genre: first-person shooter, action-RPG
  • Local co-op: up to 4 players
  • Online co-op: up to 4 players
  • Combined co-op (local + online): up to 4 players

Warhammer: Vermintide 2

Best hard co-op game on Xbox One

After the success of the first Vermintide, the developers at Fatsharks didn’t rest on their laurels, and the second attempt was even better. Vermintide 2 has a lot of innovations: a more thoughtful loot system, a greater variety of enemies and a huge number of cool locations. If we were asked to say in one word why this game is better than the first part, it would be the word «diversity». It is this diversity that keeps you and your friends coming back to the game again and again.

A special highlight of the game — great ways to get through the crowds of enemies. Thanks to the attractive melee weapons and the combat system, it’s a lot of fun to just wander around and mindlessly kill the bad guys. Fear not — for those who want more depth, the game can please the development system with subclasses and talent trees, plus there are five playable characters.

Diablo 3

Best co-op campaign game on Xbox One

The Diablo series has arrived on Xbox, and Diablo 3 has become arguably one of the best multiplayer games on Xbox One. Rejoice, console gamers! Those who have played Diablo and Diablo 2 for countless hours will understand. They may even have had unrealistic expectations for Diablo 3. If you love story and lore games, the Diablo series is one of the best games for two, three or four players.

The quality of the Xbox One port is amazing. The interface, controls and loot system have been thought through and simplified. Players on the same console will get one loot, and those connected to the same game via the Internet will get different ones. Attention to detail is evident on every corner here. For example, if one of the players puts down their controller to run to the bathroom or grab a bite to eat, their character will automatically follow the others.

Trackmania Turbo

Best Xbox One Co-Op Races

Trackmania Turbo is a fast, fun and colorful racing game that supports 4 player split-screen. This is the secret hit of Xbox One. In addition, this is one of the few games, as already mentioned, with support for so many players on one console. There aren’t many split-screen racing games on Xbox One, but Trackmania Turbo will appeal to all kinds of gamers. This is perhaps the closest game to Mario Kart on Xbox One. It is easy to learn how to play, but difficult to master. In addition to the four-player split-screen mode, there is a two-player co-op mode, Double Driver, where both players drive the same car.

In addition to gas, brakes and steering, there is a complex system of physics that you need to thoroughly master in order to win every race. In addition, there are four different cars with different handling characteristics. To successfully reach the finish line, you will need to develop a fair amount of muscle memory. The most serious drawback of the game is that they stopped releasing new content for it. It has four racing worlds with ten events each, that is, a total of 40. There are more than 200 tracks, and the game time can be stretched for 20 hours. Fortunately, the game has an editor, thanks to which new levels you can create new tracks until your imagination runs out. Definitely one of the best among the few split-screen racing games on Xbox One.

  • Combined Co-op (Local + Online): No

Call of Duty: WWII

Best Xbox One Split Screen Game

Last but not least in our list of split screen games is Call of Duty: World War II. The latest installment in the Call of Duty series has plenty of multiplayer modes. However, you cannot play the campaign together. Split-screen can be played in Zombie mode, against bots, or against each other. In our opinion, «Zombie» is the best of them. It’s basically a game within a game, and it’s enough alone to secure CoD: WWII’s place on this list. You and your partner can play locally on the same console, or online with up to four other players in a team. You have to fight your way through waves of bloodthirsty zombies, as well as complete tasks that require teamwork. The Zombies mode is challenging and often difficult to navigate, but a lot of fun as long as the zombies don’t scare you to death.

In terms of competitive modes, this game is simply the best. They all support split screen, so you and a friend will have many hours of play together with the Zombie mode. That’s why we consider CoD: WWII the best two-player game. If you are already familiar with the Call of Duty series, then you know what we mean: significant replay value and the highest quality.

  • Genre: first person shooter, zombies
  • Local co-op: up to 2 players
  • Online co-op: up to 4 players
  • Combined co-op (local + online): up to 4 players
  • Co-op Campaign: No

Rayman Legends

Best offline multiplayer game on Xbox One

Rayman Legends doesn’t have a split screen — both players are in the same 2D space. However, this is one of the best family games on our list. This is the fifth game in the Rayman series, with five different worlds spread over 48 levels. This platformer pleases with its great levels and unbridled fun. Both players must work together to run, jump, slide and speed each other through the levels. You need to keep up with each other (in a four-player game, this may not be so easy), otherwise the screen movement through the lagging behind players can lead to ridiculous death.

But you don’t just have to get to the end and survive, there are plenty of items to collect along the way. If you want to get them all, it will take much longer to complete each level. Murphy appears periodically in each level, Raymen’s magical assistant, which can be controlled by any player and helps clear the path by opening doors and performing other similar actions. It adds an extra dimension to the game, and you and your friend have to decide between yourself who will control it and when. It’s a bombshell for two or more players, with beautiful animations, amazing music and dynamic gameplay.

  • Genre: platformer, family
  • Local co-op: up to 4 players
  • Online co-op: no
  • Combined Co-op (Local + Online): No
  • Co-op campaign: yes
  • Screen split: no (shared screen)
  • Resident Evil 6 I liked that Resident Evil 5 introduced a co-op mode, which was preserved in the sixth part (in Resident Evil 7 it was removed again), but we think fans of co-op will appreciate it. The campaign mode of this survival horror game has six characters and three stories to choose from.

Each of these stories has its own unique features. For example, in Chris’s campaign there are a lot of open spaces and large guns with a lot of ammunition, while when playing as Leon, the locations are cramped and closed, and it is very difficult to find ammo. In addition to the story modes, Resident Evil 6 features a two-player co-op mercenary mode where you can earn ability points for your characters.

    • Online co-op: up to 2 players
    • Combined co-op (local + online): up to 4 players
