Warcraft 3 maps – a guide to custom maps and how to install them
So, you want to download some Warcraft 3 maps? Custom maps and modes is a long-held tradition in RTS games, and in fact it was a custom map/mode combination for Warcraft 3 called Defence of the Ancients that gave rise to what we now know as the MOBA. But even as these spin-off games rocket to new heights, people still want to download new and interesting maps for Warcraft 3, a tradition that seems to have continued through to Warcraft 3: Reforged.
There are hundreds if not thousands of options for custom Warcraft 3 maps, and plenty of places to go grab them. Rather than try and list out some top individual maps, we’ll look at the key repositories and summarize some of the options. Unlike what typically happens with mods, custom maps for Warcraft 3 specifically are meant to go in the Warcraft 3 folder in your user documents area.
The typical install path will look something like C:UsersDocumentsWarcraft IIIMaps but if you’re on Mac, this is located at: /Users//Library/Application Support/Blizzard/Warcraft III/Maps
The best Warcraft 3 maps
We’ve found a handful of places where you can grab some excellent custom maps for Warcraft 3. Let’s take a look at them…
Hive Workshop
The Hive Workshop is a forum-based community that mainly caters to Warcraft 3 players, but they also have a Starcraft 2 section as well. It offers everything from fully made custom maps, to individual assets such as icons, 3D models, even spells. It recently launched a new version of itself into beta in 2020, offering an improved service for users.
Users can comment and rate individual maps, and you will be able to see how many downloads an item has. Filtering tools will let you see what’s currently popular, and there is a well designed tag system to further help you find what you’re looking for.
WC3 Maps
This repository doesn’t feature powerful filtering and searching tools like Hive does, but it does offer a way to host maps, as well as coordinate multiplayer lobbies. It works by plugging into BattleNet itself, so you first need to get your map hosted there and then it’s automatically archived on WC3 Maps.
Its mission statement reads: “The main goal of wc3maps.com is to archive every map being played on Warcraft III’s Battle.net platform as well as provide statistics and meta data about each map.”
Epic War
Epic War is another manual repository, much like Hive, and features various filtering tools and categories, as well as user ratings and download numbers. Users can upload maps fairly easily, although ‘campaigns’ are not supported yet.
It’s worth noting that many maps can be uploaded in a state that means the World Editor cannot open them for further editing, but the game itself can run them just fine. This is because some authors protect their work so it can’t be easily copied. The official site FAQ has more information.
Warcraft 3 Reforged Map Database
This is a newer repository that launched in the wake of Warcraft 3: Reforged’s release in early 2020. It’s database is a bit more modern and easier to navigate than some of the others, and features plenty of searching and filtering tools to help you find the maps you want.
Warcraft 3 Reforged Map Database also has special sections for officially featured maps, the “best” maps (up to 250) and there’s also a Discord you can join as well.

There are more repositories out there, and we may add more as we look at what they have to offer, but just by browsing the above ones you should be able to find enough content to keep your Warcraft 3 sessions fresh.

How can I download and play WC3 maps?
Just download the WC3 map that you want to play and put it into the map folder, if you host a game now you can find the map in the menu.
Warcraft 3 Dota Maps: The biggest map category of all Warcraft 3 maps with an incredible fanbase is by far the Dota map. The creators with the well known main developer Icefrog made it happen, that Dota is like a standalone game inside another game. Warcraft 3 Default Maps: The standard Warcraft 3 Battle.net games are on default maps. The official maps are playable in the Warcraft 3 ladder and there are even more in the standard game folder. Many people also created new ones for map contests (the most official maps have their origin in map contests) or just for fun. The non-official default Warcraft 3 maps are not as balanced as the real ones, but they allow extra and extreme games. Also, maps like 6vs6, 8vs8, or FFA with 16 or 24 players are possible! crown
Warcraft 3 Competitive Battle.net Map Pool
Blizzard releases official maps in the Battle.net patches and always adjusts the map pool a bit.

In the 1on1, 2on2, 3on3, 4on4 and FFA ladder map pool you can always veto some maps, which will not added to your searching queue.
The new map pool 2018 of patch 1.29 combines the most popular maps from all time plus in the 1on1 map pool the most stable tournament maps of official Warcraft 3 e-sport tournaments.
The cool thing is that all Random Team maps as well as the FFA maps got a great new mix. The actual maps are really varied and provide the most fun ever, it is, of course, the best map pool we ever had in the Warcraft 3 lifetime!

Top 10 Custom Warcraft 3 Maps That Might Surprise You • Dungen
Once a year I get attacked by the undead and once again I install the WarCraft 3 client to strike back.
This time I decided not just to sweep away the next ghouls, but to make the top of my favorite custom maps, which the developers (read like fans) update with an enviable frequency for AAA projects. I’ll make a reservation right away that Dota will not be here … It nevertheless spilled over into a separate game, which is no worse than the original map from Frog on the WC3 engine. By the way, for Dota 2 we will make a separate top with cards; it also has its own level editor with a bunch of finished works in the workshop. Well, let’s not forget StarCraft II (yes, there is also a workshop with a carload of cool cards).
This list will not contain individual campaigns, of which there are a great many. I decided to include maps that can captivate with a separate lore, unique mechanics, as well as multiplayer and the possibility of solo passage (yes, there will be no petros here either).
Unfortunately, most of the presented maps are in English, and without a basic knowledge of the language it will be difficult to understand.
You also need to know what, for example, agility or strength is, and generally have an idea about the parameters in an MMO.
Early versions of Warcraft 3 may not support some maps. At the time of writing, everything was tested on the latest official patch 1.29.2.9231 from Blizzard for Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne.

If you are here to write that I did not include your favorite map in this list, then you can right now throw a sweaty sock at the monitor and curse me in all the languages of the Warcraft universe , because most of the cards may be unfamiliar to you.
Against the Darkness
Solo option: Yes, but boring and the main mechanics of the game are lost
Against the Darkness is a place where you need to become a hunter or prey. At the start, a choice is offered between the Death Knight and the hunter. Playing as the latter, you will have to clear the location not only from NPCs, hire warriors and arm yourself, but also save everyone from the oppression of the Death Knight.
Sunken City
Solo: Yes (use the magnifying glass in the interface menu to place it on the door opening mechanisms)
Sunken City is not just a map, it’s a whole world with a huge number of mechanics, tasks, loot and fights ! Everything is fine here, and there is a job for each of the three classes (strength, agility, intelligence). Ideally, it is proposed to play with three players, but you can go solo (to do this, you will need all your experience in playing MMOs).
If you are aiming to go solo, then I suggest choosing a strength class (it is easier), pump armor as much as possible, take something for regeneration or armor in the altar, and take health regeneration in glyphs (blue scroll on the left in the screenshot).
I would also like to point out the fact that you can collect legendary items in the game; the quests to obtain are quite long, but the reward is worth it, believe me.
Dwarven Monster Slayers
Ability to pass alone: Yes, but not by all classes
Dwarven Monster Slayers — this is a dwarven raskolbas! There is no other name for this card.
We have endless skirmishes with waves of enemies, bosses and challenges. Don’t save your mana, burn it as hard as you can to survive and move forward. The card is provided for at least two, but you can also cope alone.
Wilderness Survival
Solo playable: Yes
Wilderness Survival is probably the hardest survival game ever. Not only will you have to figure out a bunch of mechanics, but you will also have to face a real winter, cooler than behind the wall in the Game of Thrones.
Diablo 3 Warcraft
Solo playable: Yes
Diablo 3 Warcraft… Do I need to explain anything? Four heroes, enemies, loot and lots and lots of blood! I want to give a little hint from myself: to open the inventory, press the Esc key. I think the developers deliberately cut down the ability to just quit the game. But, to be honest, I didn’t even think about leaving until I realized that there were damage and survivability issues, which quickly resolved after pressing Esc.
Gaias Retaliation
Solo option: Yes, but the first hour is very hard, you have to restore life.
Gaias Retaliation ORPG is a typical RPG that can get you hooked if you’re into quests, killing enemies, loot, gold, and all the things that make us love this genre so much. It is best to play with three, but if you are a solo player, then choose Squire, this is the only playable character for a solo passage.
Defense Of Uthragon
Solo playable: Yes
Defense Of Uthragon is a battle for a dream! Stand at the head of the army and resist the demons that besiege your fortress. With each wave, the power of enemy units grows and the fight spills over into all zones.
Guilds of Hyppos
Solo playable: Yes
Guilds of Hyppos is another RPG, but now much more difficult. Enemies here break down on you at a distance of two screens and run with bloodshot eyes.
