World of Wracraft may not be always present at all platforms…

World of Warcraft may hold the mantle of being Blizzard’s flagship game for years. But can it be accessed on other game streaming platforms such as the GeForce Now?

The answer may leave you a bit disappointed.

Here’s what you need to know.

World of Warcraft on GeForce Now?

World of Warcraft is currently not available to play on GeForce Now, along with several other titles from Blizzard, such as StarCraft and Diablo.

Developers Blizzard, who are part of publishers Activision Blizzard, has yet to introduce their titles onto the cloud-based streaming service app.

But we wouldn’t imagine they’ll be joining GeForce Now anytime soon given how Activision Blizzard pulled most of their games — Such as Call of Duty and Overwatch — from the service in early 2020.

At the time NVIDIA explained the news on the GeForce Now forums, writing:

As we take GeForce NOW to the next step in its evolution, we’ve worked with publishers to onboard a robust catalog of your PC games.

This means continually adding new games, and on occasion, having to remove games – similar to other digital service providers.

Per their request, please be advised Activision Blizzard games will be removed from the service. While unfortunate, we hope to work together with Activision Blizzard to reenable these games and more in the future.

In addition to the hundreds of games currently supported, we have over 1,500 games that developers have asked to be on-boarded to the service. Look for weekly updates as to new games we are adding.

It’s entirely possible Activision Blizzard could reverse the decision, but we wouldn’t hold out much hope.

NVIDIA GeForce NOW loses Activision Blizzard’s support as cloud gaming continues to suffer from growing pains.

Nvidia has announced that Activision Blizzard has decided to remove their games from GeForce NOW.

“As we take GeForce NOW to the next step in its evolution, we’ve worked with publishers to onboard a robust catalog of your PC games,” reads a statement from Nvidia “This means continually adding new games, and on occasion, having to remove games – similar to other digital service providers. Per their request, please be advised Activision Blizzard games will be removed from the service. While unfortunate, we hope to work together with Activision Blizzard to reenable these games and more in the future.”

At this time, Activision Blizzard has not released a statement regarding their decision to remove their games from Nvidia’s cloud gaming service.

Practically speaking, this means that you can no longer play titles like Overwatch, Hearthstone, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and other titles that GeForce NOWsupported via its policy that allows you to own supported games via other storefronts and play them using the benefits of the cloud gaming service. The loss of those games put a noticeable dent in the service’s catalog of supported titles.

Yet, you can’t help but feel that this is a bigger story that goes beyond just those games. In fact, this whole thing really touches upon two ongoing controversies/stories.

First, you have the controversy/debate that surrounds cloud gaming. Services like Stadia suffer from relying on a specific set of games that must be purchased via the Stadia store. GeForce NOW provides an interesting alternative that allows you to play games you already own, but as we see here, that approach can result in an increased risk of losing access to titles you were previously able to play. Decisions such as this show that the future of cloud gaming isn’t just about solving technological problems.

There’s also the matter of Activision Blizzard’s involvement in this situation. Blizzard has been drawing some heat lately over a variety of controversies, and the idea that they would pull their support for a more consumer-friendly cloud gaming service so soon after its official launch could be another bad look for the company. This could be tied to possible plans the company may have to release their own cloud gaming service, but we’ll have to wait and see whether that proves to be the case.

This week we reported that Nvidia has removed the Activision Blizzard game catalog from the GeForce Now cloud service library, which exited beta last week. Now the platform holder has commented on the incident.

According to the Greens’ press service, there was a «misunderstanding» between the parties. Activision Blizzard and Nvidia did not enter into a commercial agreement to add the catalog, however, the publisher’s games were made available as part of a beta test. The platform owner believed that the preliminary agreement also applies to the current trial period for the «founders», but Activision representatives had a different point of view.

Nvidia admitted its mistake and removed the publisher directory Call of Duty , World of Warcraft and Overwatch . Now the parties are negotiating to conclude a full-fledged contract, after which Activision Blizzard games should return to GeForce Now.

Unlike other streaming services, GeForce Now allows you to play games already in your library on Steam . That being said, Nvidia has added ray tracing support to some projects (« Metro: Exodus «).
