Best Zombie Games

Call them what you will, Infected, Walkers, The Undead, zombies are an iconic monster that has shuffled their way into our hearts with how much they’ve bled their way back into video games, movies, and pop culture in general over the years.

There are a plethora of great games from studios that are triple-A, indie, and everything in between, with each producing their own take on the classic decaying rotting tide. Some takes are better than others, with a handful even redefining the «zombie survival» genre completely and although there is a little bit of over-saturation with how many of these games have been churned out over the years, there are still quite a few worth checking out. Here are the best zombie games that have come out so far.

Updated December 10, 2022 by Matthew Mckeown: Zombies are always going to be popular. Who doesn’t enjoy cathartically mowing down hordes of shambling corpses guilt-free after all? There are a lot of great Zombie games that have come out over the years and it’s a genre that will never get tired, ironically that’s much like the Undead.

To fill out their shuffling ranks some more and to increase our own horde of great games, it’s worth dipping back into what’s going down well with the Zombie-loving gaming crowd. Here are some more of the best zombie games out now.

33 The Unliving

A slick Indie that’s been gaining a lot of ground recently, The Unliving by RocketBrush Studio is a pixel artist’s paradise. This slick action game has you take the role of a fearsome Necromancer who’s off to change the current world order and erect his own Undead kingdom using the bodies of the living.

Combat comes with a twist in this fast-paced RPG roguelike. Whilst you can do a lot of damage on your own, the core idea is that the foes you kill can be resurrected and turned against their former friends. There are a lot of unique monsters and ghouls you can create from fallen heroes and there’s some great upgrade trees and enhancements to make them much stronger. With battles that can fill the screen with utterly gigantic hordes, The Unliving is an Early Access gem that’s definitely going places. Which is probably the most densely populated town.

32 Requisition VR

If you’re looking for some virtual reality anarchy with your friends then take a look at Requisition VR. This Early Access game by Arcadia has been making waves as it’s similar to The Walking Dead: Saints And Sinners, but with multiplayer and a lot more space to explore.

You’re stuck in Nevermont, a rundown town that’s crawling with Undead. There are tons of locations to explore and with a crafting system that has over 500 unique items to build including customized weapons, there are plenty of reasons to get out there. Though it’s a little rough around the edges, there’s a story campaign and a lot of interesting uses for the virtual reality headset during gameplay. With multiple modes of play available including PVP and the ability to bring along friends through VR co-op, Requisition is a great time with a good group.

31 Darktide

Whilst it’s not strictly a completely zombie-focused game, there are enough rotting hordes of Nurgle around for it to count. Another absolute banger by FatShark, Darktide took the things it refined and worked out in the Vermintide games, gave them a coating of futuristic and grimdark 40K paint, and sent it out the door.

RELATED: The Best Horror Games To Play With Friends

This multiplayer shooter sets you and a group of three other prisoners turned conscripts in the Astra Militarum (Earths army) with the task of clearing out Chaos worshipper cults that include hordes of Nurgle zombies, big armored behemoths, mutants, and more warp-spawned horrors. There are multiple classes to choose from, including the option to play as a massive Ogryn, and all of the weaponry is right out of the 40K handbook so purists will love the attention to gear detail. There’s a threadbare plot, but the gameplay is what really sells it as it’s a solid Warhammer shooter that’s been long overdue.

30 Mutant Meltdown

If you like your zombie hordes a little slower paced then Mutant Meltdown by GoldenGod Games might be shambling up your alley. This survival RPG is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and your mission is to manage a group of survivors through this ravaged world.

Plaguing the surface are wandering mutants and undead of all shapes and sizes along with bandits and other irradiated threats. Gameplay is turn-based and movement is bound to a 4X grid system, so it’ll hit that button for Civ fans. Tiles have various threats like radiation pockets and obstacles in them so there’s a fair amount of tactical planning required, but your survivors have unlockable skills to make them stronger and all sorts of gear to grab to keep them safe.

29 Undead Horde 2: Necropolis

Another Necromancer-themed Indie that’s sure to bring out your sinister side, Undead Horde 2: Necropolis is a cutesy action RPG by 10tons Ltd is worth rising from your crypt for. Taking the role of a powerful Necromantic Lord, your task is to ravage the kingdom, raise powerful undead armies and complete a range of quests to make yourself and your necrotic hordes stronger.

At your beck and call is an army of undead souls and at any time you can command over 100 of them to swarm all over the towns and villages in your way. There’s a number of unique minions to summon and it can be pretty satisfying to send them rumbling over a target base in a big ball of zombie fury. As you progress through the game you can level up your Necropolis at home enhance yourself and your armies and there are powerful items to find and lands to burn. So plenty of things for a new Necromancer Ruler to do.

28 Biters & Bullets

Zombie wave defense games are a dime a dozen, but occasionally you’ll find a little simple gem within the pile. Biters & Bullets by Night Owls is one of those as this slick little roguelike is a super casual zombie shooter that’s surprisingly got quite a bit of entertaining depth to it.

There are some Vampire Survivor-Esque style mechanics of using dropped energy from the undead to level yourself and your weapons up. Hordes of zombies of all shapes and sizes come at you in absolutely massive waves, and there are a lot of weird and creative powerups to send those rotting corpses back where they belong. Throw on some unique boss fights and you’ve got a solid little indie zombie game that’s off to a good start. The prologue is currently available and it’s free to play. So if you’re looking for a simple little arcade indy with hordes of undead and plenty of weird and powerful power-ups, then Biters & Bullets is a fun timesink.

27 Necro Smith

Dubbed a Necromancer Simulator by the team at Alawar Premium, who also worked on the thrilling Beholder and the challenging space Bounty Hunter game They Always Run. Necro Smith is a simple and cutesy slow-burn strategy game that provides hordes of monsters to slay.

Your goal, to cleanse the land of the “Chosen Ones”, powerful entities that rule a land that’s overrun with monsters. At your disposal are your necromantic abilities which allow you to assemble undead minions and shambling towering zombified monstrosities with unique strengths, weaknesses, and powers. These units are then sent forth from your tower to help you expand your influence, collect stronger body parts and allow you to upgrade your base to become the necromantic ruler of the land.

26 SurrounDead

A simple little open-world zombie survival game that has a lot of charm. SurrounDead takes place five years after the world has been ravaged by an undead-creating virus that decimated the population of the planet. With the remnants of humanity barely clinging to life in ramshackle survivor camps, your goal is to survive in this infested landscape for as long as you can.

RELATED: The Best Looter Shooter Games Out Now

Though it’s in Early Access, SurrounDead is off to a pretty strong start. Gameplay is reminiscent of Day Z, the map is fairly sprawling and the abandoned cityscapes and foreboding fields of wandering zombies in this desolate wasteland provide plenty of opportunities for scavenging. It’s routinely updated, and though only single-player, the wastelands feel relatively vibrant enough that you won’t feel too lonely for long.

25 Barricadez

Barricadez by Fly Penguin inc can best be described as Terraria meets Tower Defense. This massively open-world 2D game pits you as a tiny bot defending its base from innumerable hordes of undead that besiege it when the sun goes down.

But all is not lost, as beneath our robotic friend is an entire planet’s worth of resources that can be mined and crafted through intricate supply chains into sturdy defenses and bulwarks. Turrets, traps, and all sorts of barricades can be erected, and with the terrain being randomly generated no adventure into the dark depths below is the same. It’s a challenging and surprisingly dense indie that’s definitely worth your time if you like some mechanically heavy zombie survival games.

24 Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever

You very rarely find a videogame based on a movie that isn’t a soulless cash-in, but there are exceptions to that rule, and Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever is one of them. This fast-paced VR FPS puts an arcadey spin on what’s already a pretty cartoonish setting and it’s a violence-filled frenzy that will keep you coming back for more.

The goal of the game is to blast through the undead as fast as you can to set the highest score. Challenge friends to top your name on the board, deploy a massive arsenal of ass-kicking weaponry and rack up combos with slow-mo powers that trigger from skillfully aimed headshots. The undead come at you in a variety of flavors and there are plenty of maps to stretch your zombie-killing skills on.

23 House Of The Dead: Remake

Everyone remembers their first lightgun game. For many, it was House of The Dead, a cult classic cabinet that took up the popular spot in an arcade and blasted anyone that walked past with its signature soundtrack and constant yells of “RELOAD!”. Now you can recapture that nostalgia with House Of The Dead: Remake.

Released at the end of April by MegaPixel Studio, it’s an upscaled remake of the original game that’s been given a fresh coat of paint. So you can blast apart familiar bosses in gristly, gooey new detail. There’s local multiplayer and it’s available on consoles, including the Switch and there’s also a PC port, though the latter has some known stability issues. There are also some new weapons to use such as a crossbow, assault rifle, and a grenade launcher. Plus there are plans to release a remade House Of The Dead 2 in the works by the same team.

22 Chromosome Evil

Part isometric strategy game, part squad manager with a thick layering of Lovecraft-inspired monstrosities, Chromosome Evil by 16 Bit Nights is an interesting little indie game. You control a squad of soldiers, all of which can be customized to your suiting from their gear, weaponry, and attachments. Each member you bring fulfills a different role and losing one man has the potential to take the whole team down, so keep them safe.

For example, Soldiers at great at mowing down the undead, Engineers can build turrets and barricades, whilst Medics keep everyone patched together. With different locations to explore that are often shrouded in darkness and crawling with creeps, each mission could be your team’s last. Plus, as the story plays out your squad will need to scavenge for supplies along the way as you unearth the mystery of where these monsters are coming from and what happened to your missing brother.

21 Survive The Hill

An interesting Early Access title from Redivided Studios, survive The Hill is an asymmetrical multiplayer game promising matches of one versus three or two against eight. Think Dead By Daylight or Friday The 13th, where one team controls human players trying to escape and the other a monster of the week. Only the resident spook is supported by hordes of undead that constantly mob those trying to get out alive.

It’s a unique and visually impressive take in a market that’s already a little oversaturated with this type of game. But it’s nice to see something that isn’t just another Dead By Daylight Clone being thrown into the mix. Worth keeping in mind though is for some odd reason you can’t play it single-player against the AI, you need another player there. Still, fans have mentioned this as a sticking point and with updates to the game coming in Seasons, hopefully this is something that changes in the future because Survive The Hill has some potential.

20 Heaven Dust 2

One Gruel Studio asked the question, what if we turned Resident Evil into a cutesy cartoon? So in a clear love letter to classic Survival Horror, Heaven Dust 2 sets you in the role of Steve, a one-man army who awakes from a Cryogenic Pod to find he’s been locked in a mysterious research center.

The place has become overrun with undead and all sorts of mutants, but you have an assortment of weaponry at your disposal to help you fight your way out. From submachineguns to grenades, there are all sorts of fun toys to find to send the shambling shapes back to the grave where they belong. A stand-alone sequel to the original, Heaven Dust 2 keeps you on your toes and constantly backing up from the hordes of Ghouls it throws your way.

19 Arizona Sunshine

Despite its spiritual sequel After The Fall catching a lot of flak, Arizona Sunshine is still a solid and competent VR Zombie game. Despite a few rough edges here and there, it can be quite an immersive and challenging adventure. This is especially true on the higher difficulty settings as you try to escape from the infected infested desert planes and forgotten towns of Arizona.

Featuring co-op mode for up to three players, a solid horde wave defense mode, and collectible masks to wear for your characters, Arizona Sunshine has a lot going for it. Plus there are tons of guns and gear to get your hands on to blast apart the undead or just dual wield like a badass as you explore the ruins of the old world with your friends.

18 Dying Light 2

After six years in development, Techland came roaring back to our screens with another installment to their hugely popular Dying Light. Similar to its predecessor, there’s Parkour aplenty in the zombie-infested city of Harran. Now 20 years later, you’re tasked with getting the city back on its feet and solving the power struggle between warring factions surviving in this now ruin-filled wasteland.

Bringing a map that’s significantly bigger than the original, Dying Light 2 has some absolutely massive areas to explore. There are towering skyscrapers to climb, Parkour puzzles to solve, Zombies to slice, and new dizzying heights to reach thanks to the introduction of some slick new traversal tech like the Glider. Combat is still a little clunky and there are some pacing issues in the story, but the Parkour and Zombie variety, especially at night is a huge improvement over the original. If you enjoyed Dying Light and wanted more space to sprint over the undead then the sequel is worth checking out.

17 The Last Stand: Aftermath

Developed by Con Artist Games, The Last Stand: Aftermath is a significant upgrade to those that have played their previous installment Last Stand: Union City. Whilst the previous game was Zombie wave defense, this time instead of fending off the undead hordes in a bunker you’re out exploring the ravaged post-apocalyptic world.

This surprisingly in-depth single-player roguelike game tasks you with finding resources and helping others in a massive and constantly changing corpse-filled playground. Gameplay is tough but fair, and you can even the odds by unlocking special skills, crafting powerful gear, and making sure you have the best equipment when you set out. It’s a gorgeously designed isometric Zombie game that’s tense and suitably challenging.

16 Look Alive

Though not technically out yet, Look Alive is set to release this year and it’s one that’s worth making a note of when it does. Similar to The Last Stand: Aftermath but with a cutesy, cartoon approach, Look Alive comes from developers Wabby’s Land and this open-world survival game looks to be filled with all sorts of undead carnage.

Featuring huge maps littered with loot and vehicles to mow down the undead, Look Alive tasks you with surviving the Zombie Apocalypse in any way you can. This is managed by scavenging materials and resources from abandoned houses, burnt-out buildings, and whatever’s left behind. All the while fending off Zombies on a persistent world map that features a day-night cycle, other survivor camps to aid, and bosses to fight.

15 Swarm The City: Zombie Evolved

Plenty of games let you fight the uncountable undead hordes, but not many let you play as them. That’s where Swarm The City: Zombie Evolved shambles in as this real-time strategy game has you dominating the globe as the powerful King Zombie, controlling vast waves of groaning monstrosities as they tear apart the strongest human defenses. Think of it like They Are Billions, but reversed.

RELATED: Project Zomboid: Tips And Tricks That Will Keep You Alive

As you make your way across the world from city to city in a globe-trotting mission system you’ll unlock upgrades and powers for your minions and yourself that let you use all sorts of powerful abilities to plow through everything in your way. Though the game is still in Early Access, it’s got some great ideas and with time and a little polish, it looks to be a pretty solid Zombie RTS.

14 Undying

Undying is worth mentioning because whilst it’s in Early Access, it’s got a lot more going on than just being another game with Zombies in it. Undying’s core focus is on a relationship between a Mother and Son in what’s possibly the most hellish situation anyone can find themselves in. Developed by Vanimals, Undying puts you in the role of Angling, a single mother trying to keep her son Cody alive through the Zombie Apocalypse. But there’s a catch, she’s been bitten by the undead and it’s only a matter of time until she turns.

This inspiring roguelike is part open-world survival meets escort quest as your son’s survival depends on how good a parent you are. Cody can learn from your actions, so you’re encouraged to craft, cook and fight in front of him to teach him how to survive. What follows is a tough and emotional Survival game, where the more you get attached to your young ward, the harder it becomes to accept the inevitable. It’s a heart-breaking and challenging game that is sure to make a big splash when it’s fully released. If you like Zombie games with a good story, Undying is highly recommended.

10 Best Zombie Survival Games of 2023

It’s time to dodge the undead and race to the bunker with your supplies – as we check out the best zombie survival games!

Zombies have infested horror and FPS/third person games over the last three decades, with the undead proving to be very potent antagonists for both scares and more action-oriented experiences.

However, they’ve also made their presence felt in games where your character can struggle to survive as night falls; often relying on the gathering of supplies and using resources to craft shelters, perhaps even recruiting followers to help stave off the ever present threat of the undead hordes.

There’s lots of games that fall into this latter category – plenty of titles which fit into the zombie survival games genre.

Which are the best though?

Let’s find out, as we check out the best zombie survival games!

Table of Contents

10. How to Survive (PS3/Wii U/Xbox 360/PC, 2013)

VIEW ON EBAY

Though it does feel a bit like an isometric shooter, How to Survive does feature a robust crafting system and definitely has its roots in survival mechanics, with food, water and shelter needed in order for your character to stay alive.

It does, however, start off a little unsatisfyingly – with your character stranded on a boring first island.

Once you start to get your head around the game’s mechanics and move on to a more challenging and deeper experience, it’s a much more enjoyable game.

Oh – and it also throws armoured zombies at you too.

As if standard zombies aren’t scary or threatening enough!

A skill tree and the chance to craft improved weaponry should soon see you bettering your ability to survive the hordes of undead antagonists, however.

How to Survive is a slow burner but definitely a better game than its initial critical reception would have you believe. It spawned a sequel too, which you’ll read more about as you make your way through the best zombie survival games list!

9. 7 Days to Die (PS4/Xbox One/PC, 2014)

VIEW ON AMAZON

VIEW ON EBAY

Another game that met with a harsh critical reception, 7 Days to Die offers an open world, sandbox experience in which your player – and anyone you happen to be playing with, given that it supports splitscreen and online multiplayer options – is hunted by hordes of zombies!

You begin the game with nothing of use – everything you need will have to be found and crafted, including clothing, weapons, food and shelter.

The first person action in 7 Days to Die does look a bit dated these days, but its gameplay is really satisfying – at least once you understand its deep and varied resource management (and crafting!) options.

It’s not particularly well optimised for console controllers, but 7 Days to Die has a real old school, unforgiving feel that’s well worth experiencing for the hardcore zombie survivalists out there!

8. DayZ (PS4/Xbox One/PC, 2019)

VIEW ON AMAZON

VIEW ON EBAY

Beginning life as a mod for tactical military FPS Arma 2, DayZ was hugely popular in its initial incarnation.

It’s a shame that the standalone game wasn’t more polished – because the open world, massively multiplayer action in DayZ is superb as soon as you encounter other players.

Much like Rare’s Sea of Thieves, you never quite know whether or not other players will be friendly or hostile; even players who do initially join up with you can – and usually do – betray you at any time they feel like it.

This makes for an extraordinarily tense experience – you’re always watching your back and the zombies in the massive open world are, frankly, the least of your worries!

Though negatively received by critics, the fairly barebones experience means that the emergent gameplay – provided by those aforementioned, unexpected and unpredictable interactions with other players – is what truly makes DayZ shine.

7. How to Survive 2 (PS4/Xbox One/PC, 2017)

VIEW ON EBAY

This second title in the How to Survive series is a big improvement over the original game.

Set in New Orleans, the setting gives How to Survive 2 a unique and unusual ambience, even compared to its predecessor.

With support for up to four players – online or local – it doesn’t need to be a solitary experience either.

How to Survive 2 leans more towards its action RPG elements than the first game did too, with some great community-building mechanics built in too.

Additionally, there’s much more depth to character progression, allowing for players to diverge and specialise in different areas in order to have a wide variety of skills on hand.

Though clearly still an indie game – it does have a few issues that would perhaps have been smoothed out with a larger budget and more development time – How to Survive 2 is a decent zombie survival game, particularly if you want to team up with family, friends or complete strangers to try and outlast the zombie hordes!

6. Project Zomboid (PC/Mac, 2011)

VIEW ON EBAY

Set in the fictional Knox County, Kentucky, Project Zomboid is another isometric zombie survival game.

Originally released on Steam in 2011 – in Early Access form – development continues on Project Zomboid even now, with the latest update to the game having been released as recently as December 2021.

Project Zomboid is an extremely ambitious game considering its small, independent development team.

Players are survivors of a zombie apocalypse, trapped in Knox County thanks to the undead hordes.

As well as foraging for food and water – to stave off the ever present threat of hunger and dehydration – players must be careful not to be scratched or bitten by a zombie, as this will lead to zombification or death!

Safe houses can be created and barricaded to provide respite from the zombies – yet electricity and water services can eventually fail, necessitating jaunts outside of the player’s base.

Players can make use of skills such as farming and fishing to help them survive too.

A sandbox mode – where players can customise various parameters that make up the world, is also available in order to adjust the level of challenge.

Project Zomboid may look visually basic, but it’s a highly detailed and very well made game – still going strong after more than a decade since it first burst onto our screens!

5. The Last Stand: Aftermath (PS4/PS5/Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X/PC, 2020)

VIEW ON AMAZON

VIEW ON EBAY

The very first game in The Last Stand series was a browser game, released in 2007.

Since then, numerous sequels have been released – but The Last Stand: Aftermath marks the first time that the zombie survival series has appeared on consoles!

Interestingly, in The Last Stand: Aftermath, you play as an average citizen of a city overrun by the undead – yet you’re already infected with the zombie virus when you start!

As you’re already infected, the clock is ticking for your character – so they’ve volunteered to head out and gather as many supplies as they can before their time runs out.

Naturally, death – or perhaps undeath – is of course inevitable for the player’s character, so when they perish it’s time to take control of an entirely different, yet still tragically infected, survivor.

Taking a new persona into the twin stick shooting, isometric nightmare does get easier however – because each new character has some of the perks that the recently deceased human had unlocked, as well as their gear.

There’s a huge balancing of risk/reward to be done by the player when pushing forward into the world, as well as a really flexible approach to combat – items and weapons can be thrown and used to distract, but there’s also plenty of ways to use stealth too.

The Last Stand: Aftermath is an underappreciated and overlooked gem, but definitely gets our vote as one of the best zombie survival games!

4. Dying Light (PS4/Xbox One/PC, 2014)

Who knew that parkour and zombies would be such an effective combination?

Well, we here at Retro Dodo definitely did – because we’ve recommended Dying Light at least a few times before; you’ll also find it on our list of the best Xbox One zombie games and our best zombie games on PS4 list too!

In Dying Light, players are cast as an undercover agent, posing as a courier – trying to find the cure for a zombie outbreak that has a Middle Eastern city completely under siege.

Venturing beyond the safe zone of the home base – in order to find supplies and complete missions – is a seriously tense experience, but the vertically-designed open world provides lots of opportunity to avoid the hordes of zombies you’ll encounter in the wrecked urban environment.

When night falls, zombies become even stronger – so, in order to survive your jaunts beyond the safety of your base, you’ll truly have to use the environment like a brilliantly designed playground!

It’s a superb game that’s been supported with numerous DLC packs – one of which, Be A Zombie, does exactly what it says in the name: yes, it allows you to become one of the undead, helping your fellow, rotting brothers and sisters to raid other players!

3. Minecraft (PS3/PS4/Switch/Wii U/Xbox Series S/X/Xbox One/PC, 2011)

VIEW ON AMAZON

VIEW ON EBAY

Wait, where are you going? Hear me out!

Though Minecraft is most closely associated with the unbelievable inventiveness made possible by its Creative mode – as an example, one player remade the entirety of Pokemon Red in a Minecraft world, on a working Game Boy, using only Minecraft blocks – it does also feature a Survival mode.

With elements such as hunger, thirst and – yes – zombies, Minecraft’s Survival mode is actually a tense game of crafting items and making sure you have a safe place to hide when night falls.

When it does, the game is genuinely scary – you certainly won’t be thinking about how creative you can be with the blocks once you’re left in the dark and can hear the moans of hungry zombies approaching!

Now, you can even recreate the terror of being pursued by zombies in real life – check out our best Minecraft Lego sets list for more on that!

Over the years, many more terrifying and deadly creatures have been added into Minecraft, but it’s amazing how much its Survival mode really does feel like the scariest survival horror game despite the basic, blocky visuals.

Which is why Minecraft most definitely earns its high ranking on the best zombie survival games list!

2. Dying Light 2: Stay Human (PS5/Xbox Series S/X/Xbox One/PC, 2022)

More parkour and zombies?

I’m in!

Dying Light 2: Stay Human takes what was great in the original game – the tense jaunts out into the city, the deadly fall of night and of course, the possibilities for creative traversal – and dials it up to eleven.

Though – like its predecessor – this is a first person action game first and foremost, its overall feel, crafting system and open world environment certainly makes it fit the survival criteria of this list very well indeed.

Of course, the vertiginous design of the open world setting makes the parkour incredibly satisfying and endlessly enjoyable, just as it did in the original.

With stats and skills to improve your character, as well as a crafting system, it definitely feels like an action oriented survival experience.

We liked Dying Light 2: Stay Human so much that it even made it onto our list of the best PS5 horror games!

Just try not to leave the safe zone after the sun goes down – unless you have to!

1. State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition (Xbox One, 2018)

VIEW ON AMAZON

VIEW ON EBAY

Another game that we here at Retro Dodo feel is unfairly overlooked, State of Decay 2 is a zombie survival game that ticks absolutely all of the boxes that you’d expect from a post-apocalyptic, action/adventure/strategy game.

You control a community of survivors, rather than just one – and you can recruit more as you explore the world. Taking care of each survivor’s physical and mental health is also important, as well as providing sufficient facilities for them at your chosen base of operations.

Multiple zombie types (including the horrific, titular cover star – the Juggernaut) and even disgusting plague hearts – which create tough, disease spreading zombies – roam the massive open world beyond the walls of your safe zone, as well as other survivors who may or may not be friendly.

Managing relationships with other communities and picking up on distress signals becomes part of day to day survival in State of Decay 2, which also has a brilliant resource management system.

Specific resources are located in logical places; need fuel? Well then, better find a garage or petrol station. How about medicine? Try finding a pharmacy. Food supplies waning? Get yourself to a store or restaurant.

There’s an incredible level of detail in State of Decay 2’s open world action – and it’s really satisfying to build up a community of people, whose skills and abilities all advance the more they use certain items or engage in different activities.

It’s heartbreaking to lose even one of your residents, however, especially as each one is randomly generated, feels like a completely unique individual – and they’re permanently gone once they’re dead.

State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition even features horde-based multiplayer modes – or, if you’re feeling brave, you can invite other players into your open world adventure too.

All of this adds up to make State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition our clear choice for the top of the best zombie survival games list!

from «28 days later» to the «dead do not die»-Afisha-Kino

March 12, 2022

Victoria Savina, Anton Ivanov

March 12 March 12 March 12 2022

Zombie horror has long been a respectable genre. Taking this opportunity, Afisha publishes the second and final part of the material about the films that had the strongest influence on the development of the genre. Here is the first part.

  • 28 days later

    Fantasy, Horror, Drama

Danny Boyle’s sci-fi thriller about the end of the world

In the 90s, the excitement around zombie horror began to subside. The new films were not as innovative and (with rare exceptions) did not cause heated discussion. Along with this, the fear of epidemics began to progress, caused by the hype around various strains of influenza and SARS. Plus, in 2001, the whole world was shocked by the September 11 terrorist attack, which became a symbol of chaos, mass deaths, gave rise to mistrust and rage, and shook people’s confidence in their own security. The painting “28 Days Later” by Danny Boyle answered the request for time. According to the plot, a zombie epidemic in London begins after the bite of a monkey — the carrier of the virus with the speaking name «Rage». However, the main events in the film take place after the peak of the spread of the virus. We see its consequences: deserted streets, devastation, announcements of the missing, as after a terrorist attack or a real mass pandemic.

The zombies themselves are no longer dead, but simply infected. Note that the spread of the epidemic after an animal bite has already been shown in «The Living Dead», but Boyle’s zombies have become much more active and furious, which also corresponds to the spirit of the time. Since the 90s, the world has become more and more dynamic, and people have shown an increasing tendency to rush and try to succeed in the maximum number of cases. Therefore, the “slow” zombie apocalypse with the dead rising from the graves fades into the background, giving way to the swiftness and popularization of infected zombies.

  • Sean of the Dead

    Comedy, Melodrama, Horror

English Proletarian vs. the Living Dead

Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead did three important things at the same time: he paid tribute to George An. Romero, paved the way for the zombie-comedy genre and reflected on another painful theme inherent in the 00s. The film has a plot similar to Dawn of the Dead: first, the author introduces us to the routine life of the main characters, who daily perform mechanical actions that they hate, and then shows a zombie apocalypse over which you can laugh to your heart’s content. So in Wright, a member of a modern, lost and zombified society, Sean (Simon Pegg), right during the spread of a pandemic, performs ritual actions, ignoring newspaper headlines, traces of blood and the infected. Zombies also reflexively perform the same monotonous actions that they did in life. In the final, we are generally shown how some of the infected were introduced to primitive work. An integral part of this whole at the same time comical, depressing and satirical picture is music, with which the author has a special relationship. With its help, Wright emphasizes the caricature and drive of everything that happens, focusing on the funny scenes of massacre of zombies (see, for example, the episode in the bar when the heroes beat the infected under Queen).

  • Reportage

    Horror

Spanish mockumentary horror about zombies in self-isolation

Ambitious journalist Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) decides to make a report about the rescue service. The crew arrives at an apartment building where something strange is happening. When it turns out that its inhabitants have turned into zombies, and the front doors are locked out of harm’s way, rescuers and a journalist with a cameraman will have to save. Zombie horror by the Spaniards Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza came out on the wave of popularity of the mockumentary genre, rediscovered by The Blair Witch Project. There were still two years left before Paranormal Activity, which finally made it mainstream. «Reportage» is not a masterpiece, but an extremely effective movie that uses the power of a subjective camera shake to convey the atmosphere and dynamics of survival in a house full of hungry zombies. It also has a kind of black humor, for which Spanish horror films are usually loved. The film spawned an American remake and launched an entire franchise, but not all of its parts are required viewing.

  • Planet Terror

    Action, Thriller, Sci-Fi

Category B stylized horror film from an A-director

Trouble at a nearby Texas military base turns residents into a nearby Texas military base zombie. Among the survivors are dancer Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan), her ex El Rey (Freddy Rodriguez), Dr. Dakota Block (Marley Shelton), Sheriff Haig (Michael Bean), the police and the military. Now they need to find out the relationship not only with the zombies, but also with each other. «Planet Terror» is the second part of the joint project of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino «Grindhouse», for which Quentin directed «Death Proof». Both films are a pastiche of old grindhouse B-movies (action, thrillers, horror films) that were supposed to be shown in double screens, like in old cinemas. The project did not work out, but they managed to convey the aesthetics of the grindhouse to these frostbitten geniuses. Planet Terror is delightfully insane and completely illogical: explosions, crowds of zombies, a prosthetic machine gun. But what would look like dumb trash in a normal B movie, Rodriguez turns into a stylish author’s statement with quotes from cult classics.

  • I am a legend!

    Action, Science Fiction

Fantastic action movie about the only earthling who survived a terrible epidemic

The novel by Richard Matheson was released back in 1954 and had a great influence on the formation of the image of vampires and zombies in literature and cinema, and also affected popularization in pop culture of the concept of the global apocalypse associated with the pandemic. The modern adaptation of Francis Lawrence is the third in a row and at the same time a hybrid of the book and film «The Omega Man». I Am Legend focuses on a deserted New York City and US Army Medical Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville (Will Smith). According to the plot, the cure for cancer turned out to be a deadly virus and killed half the world’s population, turning the rest into zombies. Now Neville lives only surrounded by sunlight-sensitive zombies and his only friend, a sheepdog named Sam. He plays sports, replenishes supplies, hunts deer, tries to contact other survivors with the help of radio communication and make a serum against the virus. Despite the fact that the views of a frozen New York, deserted skyscrapers and mossy streets are very spectacular, the attention is almost completely captured by Smith’s character with his inner experiences. The picture combines elements of zombie horror and science fiction, but focuses more on the psychological component. Neville is immersed in melancholy due to loneliness, lack of social connections, past rituals, and also desperately struggles with a sense of the futility of his own existence and meaninglessness (all this, of course, makes the film related to the works of French existentialists).

  • Welcome to Zombieland

    Comedy, Horror

A film that brought even those who don’t like zombie horror movies to cinemas

A zombie apocalypse has happened all over the world. A former student nicknamed Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) travels across America, strictly following his set of rules that help him survive. He soon meets up with other survivors: Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and two sisters, Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). At first they treat each other with distrust, but gradually realize that they can only survive together. Director Ruben Fleischer exhumed the genre, breathing new life into it and bringing it closer to the gold standard. To do this, he went into parody (but not pure), crossing zombie films with family drama. All the characters are named after American cities and are slowly moving closer, so this and another movie is about how to overcome trauma. As a result, a witty script, excellent cast (and an adorable cameo by Bill Murray) ensured the film’s cult status. In 2019a sequel was released in which the family problems of the characters reached a new level.

  • World War Z

    Action, Horror, Drama

    Hollywood’s first big-budget zombie horror

Marc Forster’s science fiction action film based on «Mercy» World War Z” and tells about a large-scale zombie apocalypse, during which each country tries in different ways to accumulate forces for its defense and survival. So, for example, the most spectacular is the part of the film where the invasion of the undead is opposed by the Israelis, who have built an unimaginable wall around Jerusalem, through which a whole swarm of zombies is trying to break through. Frankly, Brooks’ idea is so good that I would like to see more countries with their ideology, geopolitical strategy and methods of survival in the film adaptation. However, for obvious reasons, the main events are concentrated in a small number of places and on one character — former UN investigator Gerald Lane (Brad Pitt). On behalf of the former superiors, he goes in search of a source of infection and a cure. Among the main locations in the tape are the United States, the aforementioned Jerusalem, South Korea, in one of the laboratories of which the hero will be forced to run away from hordes of the living dead, as well as a research center filled with zombies. Despite the colossal number of monsters, the film features a small amount of blood and severed limbs (after all, the petty PG-13 rating obliges this).

  • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

    Thriller, Comedy, Horror

An attempt to refresh the classics with the invasion of the undead

In the film adaptation of the mashup novel by Seth Graham-Semedta, the melodrama turned out to be mixed with combat elements, melodrama, battle costumes, melodrama-Semedta-Semedta-combat costumes art and a zombie apocalypse that trivializes the main leitmotifs of the original story, but emphasizes their subtext with bold strokes. It is clear that the presence of the undead in Jane Austen’s novel is mainly motivated by appeal to a wide audience. However, the zombie apocalypse also highlights social and political issues. Among them: the colonial policy of the British Empire, which is followed by a punishment in the form of an invasion of zombies, inequality, social pressure, the suppression of sexuality, the need to follow certain rituals and avoid all sorts of vulgarities. According to the plot, Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) and her sisters are confronted not only by zombies, but also by the rules established in England in the 19th century, which force them to trade themselves and look for husbands. Fighting the living dead on a par with men, the girls throw caustic and defiant phrases, and also take up weapons that are sexually hidden under ball gowns. In this regard, after the brutal reprisal against mossy orders, even the matrimonial finale does not look so cloying — all that was needed was to deal with the hordes of the living dead.

  • Train to Busan

    Action, Thriller, Horror

Korean zombies on the railway to his little daughter Soo An (Kim Soo An). Reluctantly, he agrees to take her to her mother’s birthday in Busan, however, when the train starts moving, a zombie apocalypse will begin throughout the country. To survive, passengers — not only the main character, but also a simple hard worker with a pregnant wife, an athlete with a cheerleader girlfriend and a wealthy businessman — will have to make difficult moral choices. Animator Yong Sang-ho’s first feature film continues the events of his animated film Seoul Station. It became the highest grossing film of 2016 and received good reviews from all over the world. It’s got everything you love about Korean cinema: peppy action, tongue-in-cheek satire, social utterance, and heartbreaking sentimentality—and yet another one of zombie horror’s most obnoxious antagonists. A sequel, Train to Busan 2: The Peninsula, is scheduled for 2020.

  • The Dead Don’t Die

    Fantasy, Comedy, Horror

    Jim Jarmusch’s charming zombie comedy

In his small American town, Sheriff Cliff Robertson (Bill Murray) is investigated gruesome murder at a roadside restaurant. Pretty soon it turns out that the reason is the invasion of zombies. What follows is a strange story involving a sheriff and an officer, their colleague Mindy (Chloe Sevigny), a racist farmer (Steve Buscemi), a mysterious funeral home owner (Tilda Swinton), a forest hermit (Tom Waits) and other strange and colorful inhabitants of the town. Jim Jarmusch made a meditative author’s comedy with his favorite actors, apathetic characters, meta-humor and postmodern references. What is the fourth wall-breaking discussion of the script between Murray and Driver worth! It seems that Jarmusch needs a zombie setting not only to bitterly put this planet at zero, but also to show the excellent physical shape of Iggy Pop, overgrown Tom Waits, Steve Buscemi in a stupid baseball cap, Tilda Swinton with a samurai sword.
