This time, he finds himself trapped in Termina, an alternate version of Hyrule that is doomed to destruction in just three short days. Link must race to recover the Ocarina of Time (which allows him to manipulate time in multiple ways), defeat challenging bosses in dungeons spread across Termina, and discover the key to the mystery of Majora’s Mask. Along the way he’ll obtain new weapons and items and help other characters (some strangely familiar) in their everyday lives. In addition, Link must utilize a wide assortment of masks scattered throughout Termina, each with its own specific use or power. Never before has three days offered so much in the way of action, mind-boggling puzzles, and depth—The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is an adventure unlike any other! … Expand

Often mistakenly criticized for being too short, having a poor save system,Majora’s Mask is a criminally underrated game for several reasons. Often mistakenly criticized for being too short, having a poor save system, and in bizarre cases, being too difficult, it would appear to be the weakest title in the series. However, if you play through the game only once just to beat all the dungeons, then I’m afraid you’re playing it wrong. Unlike Ocarina of Time, the story is not spoon-fed to the player, leaving it up to you to discover all the game’s secrets on your own, and with the ability to reset the timeline at will, you have all the time you’ll ever need to figure it all out. The world of Termina is arguably one of the most well developed, living game worlds ever made (from the N64 era no less). Of the three days allotted, you will see that everyone gets around; they have things to do, and people to see. Not only that, you can affect the outcome of situations differently every time you play. This can be accomplished by interacting with a character at the right place, at the right time, or simply talking to someone and saying the right thing. In extreme cases, it’s not who you are, but what, that makes the difference. The transformation masks add yet another layer of complexity to an already fantastic experience. As if that wasn’t revolutionary enough, the game rewards you for helping resolve the problems of the people. Some problems are more difficult and complex than others, but they are story arcs all on their own. Once you help everyone, as well as collect all the masks, you can unlock the true ending. Some people claim that the true ending is ridiculously easy once you unlock the Fierce Deity mask, but they never really ask themselves why. That’s part of the mystery. The answer is in the game, you just have to find it. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is much deeper than any game other in the series, more than deserving of a second look.

Because I didn’t address it anywhere else, my counter against complaints on the save system in MM is that you can save any time you want by playing the Song of Time. The owl statues are nice, but they aren’t required for saving the game. … Expand

As opposed to movies, books or other types of art, you are merely a spectator, however with video games, you get a direct involvement that is incapable in other forms. Perhaps the best example of this involvement is Zelda: Majora’s Mask. The game has two different aspects that make it unique from not only other zeldas but other video games. The three day aspect: you continuously play the same three days over and over, as well as the mask aspect: you can don masks that either have specific jobs or transform you into the soul of someone who comes from the world that you inhabit. In the game, you play as not only «Link» the main character, but inhabit a Deku Scrub, a Goron, and a Zora. With the Deku, you enter into an established role in a world that unfamiliar to you. Deku scrubs are obviously second class citizens. You can’t go in some buildings, you can’t join clubs and you are generally treated like dirt. Its different with the other two. The goron is a hero of his people and when you become him, you take on the cares and problems of his people. With the zora its similar, you need are part of a band and take on some of the problems of the zora people. The involvement in this story is what makes this game so great. Through experiencing the various people’s lives in this game you experience what gives the game its amazing personality. You see the ups and downs and are compelled to change the things that are bad. Theres so much more in this game to talk about: the ever present Moon that hangs above head, with a constantly sad look on its face, the beautiful and sad stories that are constantly appearing in the game, the games villain, The Skull Kid, who’s only crime was looking for new friends. Its a hard game that is so wonderfully artful and amazing. It will remind you why video games are an art form worth fighting for.… Expand

Description

After having fulfilled Princess Zelda’s request and saved the land of Hyrule from grave danger, Link departs on his horse Epona. In the Lost Woods he is ambushed by Skull Kid, an imp who dons a mysterious mask, accompanied by the fairies Tael and Tatl. Skull Kid turns Link into a small plant-like creature known as Deku Scrub and takes away his horse and his magical ocarina. Shortly afterward Tatl joins Link and agrees to help him revert to his native form. A meeting with a wandering mask salesman reveals that the Skull Kid is wearing Majora’s Mask, an ancient item used in hexing rituals, which calls forth a menacing moon hovering over the land of Termina. Link has exactly three days to find a way to prevent this from happening.

Majora’s Mask is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. It utilizes the same engine and visual style, and virtually identical interface. The game retains the traditional elements of Zelda games (dungeon exploration, sword fighting, bows, bombs, heart containers, etc.) as well as those introduced in its immediate predecessor, such as active blocking with a shield, various throwing items, and the usage of melodies played on the ocarina to solve puzzles. Compared to the previous Zelda games, this installment is more oriented towards interaction with NPCs and has a larger variety of items, optional quests, and mini-games.

Also unique to this entry is its time system. The game has an internal clock, with one hour roughly corresponding to one real-life minute. If the player hasn’t completed all the objectives within three in-game days, the moon falls on Termina, annihilating everyone and ending the game. However, the player can return to the first day at any time by playing a song on the ocarina, saving all quest-related progress and inventory but losing other items such as ammunition or money (unless stored in a bank). It is also possible to learn melodies that slow the time passage significantly or advance the clock instantly to the next day. Some events happen only at specific times, and many characters follow their own schedules throughout the three days. Owl statues scattered across the land provide quick-save points and serve as teleporters between areas when discovered.

Collection and usage of masks play an important role in the game. Most of the twenty-four masks that can be found in the game are optional, and usually serve to solve side quests or enhance Link’s abilities, allowing him, for example, to run faster or to become invisible. Transformation masks can be used to turn Link into a Deku Scrub, a Goron, or a Zora. Each of these forms has access to unique abilities, many of which are essential to the completion of the game. Among other skills, Deku Link can shoot bubbles from his mouth and float between flowers; Goron Link can operate heavy switches and walk through lava without taking damage, and weigh down heavy switches; Zora Link can swim fast and generate force fields.

Trivia

1001 Video Games

The N64 version of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.

Development

As with Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask was meant to be released for the 64DD add-on, but eventually got crammed into cartridge format. Producer Shigeru Miyamoto originally wanted to re-purpose Ocarina of Time‘s dungeons into a new game and only gave director Eiji Aonuma a year to create the game. When Aonuma requested that he create a brand new game in the series instead, Miyamoto agreed, so long as the one year deadline remained, creating a rushed development cycle.

Ganondorf

Both this game and The Minish Cap are the only Zelda games in which Ganon/Ganondorf doesn’t appear, not counting Link’s Awakening in which the shape-shifting final boss assumes his form briefly.

Music

The song Ballad of the Wind Fish previously appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

References

Several persons, items and music from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time return in this game, in either the same or a different role.

References to the game

In the MTV animated series Undergrads, the game’s black countdown screen (which greets you at the beginning of each dawn, provided you’re not in a dungeon) was parodied with the words «72 HOURS UNTIL THE END OF FRESHMEN YEAR» in the season finale.

Tingle

This game marks the first appearance of Tingle, the strange man who thinks he is a fairy.

Legend Of Zelda: 15 Things You Didn’t Know About The Major’s Mask

Time flies when you’re not living the same three-day cycle over and over again. If you only had 72 hours left on Earth, what would you do? Well, some Nintendo junkies are sure to head straight to the game room, clean out a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask , and place it right in the cartridge slot.

While some people might call Breath of the Wild the best Zelda game and others are mostly in the Ocarina of Time camp, things like Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are mostly not mentioned. However, apart from the latest releases, there is one Zelda game that stands out from the deck. Where would we be without the Major Mask?

As the black sheep of the family, including everything from aliens to the transforming link, the Major Mask was a trippy three-day spellcaster who stole a place in our hearts. However, after fighting the Moons, the Goat Skulls, and the four masked animals: Odolva, Goght, Gyorg, and Twinmold, there’s something you might have missed.

Whether it’s Wii remotes, useless paper airplanes, cameos from other Nintendo heroes, or even a subtle irony that flew over your little green riding hood, here are 15 Things You Didn’t Know About Major Mask .

15 The Happy Mask Salesman is based on the creator of Zelda

There are many idiosyncratic characters in the Zelda series — aside from the murderous moon — but few are as frustrating as the lucky mask salesman. The creepy and erratic mask purveyor first appeared in the Ocarina of Time but then took on a much larger role in Majora’s Mask.

Setting the whole series of events in motion, the Cursed Major’s Mask was stolen from Happy when he was ambushed by Skull Kid at the start of the game. If you’ve ever wondered where you might have Happy Mask Salesman’s smiling face, it might be because he’s based on the character’s creator and actually the grandfather of the Zelda franchise, Shigeru Miyamoto.

With the same smirk and matching hair, once you hear the news, you can never shake that these two are doppelgangers. Beyond just looks, Happy’s mantra is to sell masks to people to make them happy, while Miyamoto sells us Zelda games for the same reason. Let’s hope Skull Kid isn’t based on anyone!

14 Ganondorf’s Horse at Romani Ranch

The Nintendo 3DS update for Majora’s Mask comes 15 years after the original, and the graphical update also gives us a whole new cave of mysteries to explore.

Rancho Romani served as Ocarina’s version of Major «Rancho Lon Lon» from Ocarina, however, you can see a few nods to its predecessor lurking in the corners. Upstairs, like Mama’s House at Romani Ranch, eagle-eyed gamers can spot a few horse Easter eggs. While above the robe you will be able to find the cute Epona doll, a darker toy also appears around her.

The doll is clearly a stuffed copy of the Ganondorf stallion from the Ocarina of Time. You may remember the terrible beast that appeared before us at the beginning of the game. With his red eyes glowing, it’s no wonder someone threw him on the edge of the bed.

13 Zora Zal musical pleasure

Forget The Beatles, Majora’s Mask gave us their own superstar rock band — minus record sales. Presented at the Seashell Zora Hall, aquatics spend their days listening to Indigo Gos. While gamers may not have heard of any of their songs, you should recognize some familiar sounds.

As you tour the area, you may hear several soothing songs playing in different bedrooms. We meet members of the Indigo-Gos who play classical Zelda music. The melodic music of Zora’s Domain plays in the main hall, but that’s just the beginning.

As we get deeper into the realm, Tijo, drummer for Manta Ray, blasts the cave theme from A Link to the Past. Japa with floppy hair plays dark music from The Legend of Zelda, while pianist Evan plays the rather dark «Game Over» from the same game.

While this may all sound like enough musical nostalgia, the Indigo-Gos are known for their song «Ballad of the Windfish», which shares its name with the song used to awaken the Windfish in Link’s Wake. We are still waiting for that group and we can wait a lot longer.

The lucky mask seller has a Mario mask

If you want to change your appearance or have a masquerade ball, the lucky mask seller will protect you. When we first met Happy in Hyrule, he only had eight masks, and the only one that was useful was the Mask of Truth to talk to the Gossip Stones.

The next time we see him wearing a major’s mask, his collection has grown a bit. Among the game’s 24 official masks, you may notice that he has a familiar face attached to the back of his backpack. Seemingly to make the jump from the sewers to Termina, Mario himself is clearly visible in mask form.

So how did Happy get the Mario mask and what does that mean? Well, no one knows, but it probably would have had some sort of dark backstory if it was anything more than a smart easter egg.

There is even a terrifying Reddit theory that Happy collects his masks by skinning victims and claiming their faces. Grim even for Mascora Majora, it would surely explain how he got Mario’s face, just that the pasta-loving plumber also died.

11 You can find a paper airplane

In addition to Mario masks and stuffed horses, there are many other useless items in the game. For many years we have heard and hunted for the elusive paper plane. Perhaps the most mysterious thing about the game, Nintendo has never explained what it means or how it got there.

Deep in the heart of the Icahn canyon, we are heading to the ancient Icahn castle in one of the game’s dungeons. Seemingly inhabited by creepy ReDeads and Floormasters, the aftermath didn’t stop the various monsters inside from some origami. One theory is that when Ikana flourished before it was inhabited by the dead, it was filled with children. Like Link, the kids loved to play and probably gave it up years ago.

On top of one of the pillars in the southeast part of the courtyard, you can find a paper airplane. Although Link can approach him, he still doesn’t make sense. Some fans have teased that the plane was filmed for the 3DS version, but luckily it is still present in all its paper glory in both versions of the game.

10 There was a planned mission to the Moon

It seems that Link wasn’t the only one who wanted to take one small step for a man and land on the Moon wearing Majora’s Mask. Why anyone would want to visit such a monstrous place we do not understand, but some poor fools from Terminus wanted to rest in this terrifying area. Well, it looks like the owner of the bomb shop was planning to go there — possibly on a suicide mission to stop the moon from falling to Earth.

While selling or inventing bombs may not qualify you as an astronaut, the owner planned to use the bomb’s power to send himself to the moon. The plans were sketchy at first and mostly included a mask filled with gunpowder — which sounds like a recipe for disaster — however, he at least thought ahead.

As we return to the 3DS version, it looks like Bomb Shop’s plans are well advanced. This time, instead of a note about his expedition, you can find real sketches on the rocket wall and a successful landing/discovery of the chest. Allegedly, he never made it there and was beaten by NASA.

9 Lord Chapu Chapu — Secret Boss

3DS not only added a few tweaks to Majora’s mask, but also added a whole new character and secret boss. Fish Lord Jabu-Jabu became Ocarina’s favorite when we dug into it to save Princess Ruto, but did you know that his smaller counterpart shows up in Majora?

Chapu-Chapu is believed to have fallen into the Swamp Pit because of the original idea to bring Jabu-Jaba back for a sequel. Miyamoto said that there should have been an improved fishing game where players could even capture Jaba and stop the moon from falling. While none of this made it into the 2000 version, it is rumored that it inspired Chapu to be updated.

Although his capture does not affect the game, and he is significantly smaller than Jabu, Chapa Chapa is still difficult to capture. The thing about Zelda games is that you either love or hate fishing. If you want to catch yourself a chapu chapu, head to the swamp, but be aware that it will take hours of patient fishing.

8 The game was too dark for the iQue player

Anyone remember the short lived iQue Player from China? No, we are too. A joint venture between Nintendo and iQue limited, the console was created to stop game piracy by porting games. Not surprisingly, no more than 12,000 units were sold in China.

The concept was a controller that connected directly to the TV and looked like a real hybrid of the N64 and Gamecube models. Fourteen games were ported to it, and while Ocarina received a console release, Majora Musk never made it. From the looks of it, the game and its menacing moon were a bit on the dark side due to concerns that video games were getting too violent.

Pictures of Majora’s Mask were even shown on the back of the iQue box, but it was considered too mature for Chinese audiences. It reportedly violated the country’s censorship laws and ended up being mothballed — we can’t figure out why at all!

7 Star Fox also appeared

If you’re more of an animal than a human, Mario wasn’t the only plucky Nintendo to make a cameo. Once again in mask form, can you define the lineup of Star Fox and his crew as just another Easter dog?

On the mask collection screen, you can clearly see the fox, bird, rabbit, frog and pig masks. For those not in the know, this seems to be a representation of Fox, Falco, Peppy, Slippy and Pigma. First released at 1993, Star Fox (Starwing in Europe) was a railroad shooter published on the SNES. After Fox McCloud’s adventures in the Lylat system, did anthropomorphic animals also make their way to Termina?

Over the years in the Smash Bros. there were seven games, a lot of canceled games, and something of a team, but there was no official Zelda crossover. While this is a good idea, Majora director Eiji Aonuma has since said in an interview that it was just a coincidence. While he admits that some smart coder may have inserted the Star Fox Easter egg, this was not at the direction of the development team.

6 Got a bow on the GameCube

First announced at a press conference in 1999, Nintendo revealed that they were working on a sequel to the N64 after the failure of the 64-disc magnetic drive. Although the GameCube was released in 2001, it didn’t hurt to hint at the Major’s masked console.

Originally nicknamed «Project Dolphin», if you look close enough you can see a reference to the console’s early days in Majora’s Mask. In the astral observatory, anyone who wants to have fun will see a drawing of a dolphin under one of the pots.

When heading to the lower floor, a group of pots can be found on the wall opposite the stairs. Although it is a pixelated picture, you can clearly see the water dolphin.

Although Majora’s mask was not long before the GameCube era, three Zelda games were released on the console. The GameCube included the very popular Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, which were later ported to the Wii.

5 The game was originally designed for the week

The Major’s Mask ended up being its own groundhog day as we were forced to live the same three day cycle over and over again. While the mechanic has become synonymous with the game and its unique selling point, it can be frustrating at times. We all frantically jotted down notes of who would be where and what quest we needed to complete, so imagine if the game ended twice as long!

Developer Eiji Aonuma revealed that it was originally intended to be a weekly version of the game. This is reportedly due to a project that Aonuma was working on in the 90s. It was the «cops and robbers» style where you had a week to catch the crook (in fact, within an hour).

Although the game was cancelled, Aonuma wanted to transfer some of his ideas to Majora’s. Considering there was enough material in the finished game — although it may have needed a few more dungeons — it’s hard to imagine a game that would fill an entire week. However, having lost four of the seven days, it explains how we are left with elements such as Chapu Chapu and various other Easter eggs.

4 Mario’s familiar song

If stealing his face wasn’t so bad, Zelda had to go and steal Mario’s lyrical genius too. The obscure song «Farewell to Gibdos» might sound familiar, but that’s probably because it was copied straight from Super Mario 64.

This may be one of the few non-playable Zelda songs, however, you can hear the tune if you play » Song of Swords» to make the Composer’s Sharp in Spring Water Cave. The merry tune causes any of the rotting gibdos to go back to their graves, and also causes Sharpe to release the spring water again.

As for Mario, Gibdos’ Farewell may evoke memories of the carousel ride in Big Boo Ghost. While there are slight differences, both songs use the same melody. Does this mean that Major’s Mask is a sequel to our plump plumber, or maybe even a prequel, and that Gibdos could just be a Boos in anticipation?

3 The game represents the five stages of grief

If being banned for being too violent was bad enough, Major Mask had a completely different stream of suffering. With five main story locations, the entire game is an allegory for the five stages of grief. While this may not be the most fun of thoughts, the idea is much clearer than you think.

Our arc is basically Link who goes along with Navi’s absence Clock City represents denial as the villagers refuse to accept that the giant moon will soon crush them while Woodfall’s Deku expresses anger believing the monkey stole their princess.

In Snowhead, the recently deceased Goron Darmani tries to make a deal with Link to keep his people safe, then we meet a depressed Lulu, who had her eggs stolen in Great Bay. Finally, we reach the Ikana Valley and take them in, where Link finds no news mask and is finally free to complete his quest.

Even Aonuma said that each area clearly has certain emotions, but he did not confirm, «Yes, these are the five stages of grief.» Well, it’s still better than the «Link is dead» theory.

2 Skull Kid — He Who Ocarina

Skull Kid may not be as villainous as the pointy Ganondorf, but boy, he’s more annoying. As Majora Musk’s de facto villain, what’s his deal?

Remembering the Ocarina, there were actually three Skull Children, but only one returned for Majora. One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the game’s sequel is Skull Kid’s motive and whether or not he is the real villain.

Perhaps something tragic made him go down such a mischievous path as, say, the near-destruction of Hyrule? When Link and Skull befriended at the end of The Major’s Mask, it is quite clear that he met Link in Ocarina of Time. Baby Skull tells Link, «You smell like the fairy child who taught me that song in the woods.»

»

It appears to be the same child from Lost Woods, however, there are conspiracy theorists who think the «fairy child» skull may actually be Saria. Chances are the franchise won’t go for even more identical Skull Children, but you’ll never know that Majora’s version could be the evil twin of the one Link taught «Sarya’s Song.»
