This article is about the playable race. For the Zandalari troll lore, see Zandalari troll.

The Zandalari trolls are one of the playable Horde allied races in World of Warcraft, introduced in Battle for Azeroth. They are the progenitors of all trollkind, and as such rule an ancient, powerful empire upon the South Seas, after which they name themselves.

Talanji is their queen, and she rules from atop their capital, Dazar’alor. Whilst the Zandalari do ride raptors much like their Darkspear cousins, the preferred racial mount appears to be the Direhorn. As the original trolls, Zandalari speak the language of all their kind, Zandali, which is appropriately named after them. Orcish is also known as a secondary language.

Notes and trivia

  • With the exception of some custom animations such as spell casting, the male Zandalari use night elf animations and the females use jungle troll animations.
  • Due to their connection with the dinosaur loa, Zandalari druids use a raptor for [Travel Form], a pterrordax for [Flight Form], a humanoid pterrordax for [Moonkin Form], an ankylodon for [Bear Form], and a sabertusk for [Cat Form]. Their [Aquatic Form] appears to be a cross between a shark and a mosasaurus.
  • Zandalari hunters begin with a direhorn pet without having to acquire the  [Ancient Tome of Dinomancy].
  • Zandalari were originally announced as an allied race at BlizzCon 2017, at which point the developers’ intention was to make them available alongside Dark Iron dwarves at the release of Battle for Azeroth. At the time, the team did not believe they would be able to make Kul Tiran humans playable due to the art workload involved. However, as the development of the expansion progressed, the developers increasingly felt that since the main story of 8.0 revolved around befriending the Zandalari and Kul Tirans, making both races playable was what the story deserved. They realized they could make Kul Tirans an allied race if they stretched, but it wasn’t going to be able to happen until patch 8.1.5. Once this was settled, it made the most sense from a story standpoint to pair the Kul Tirans with Zandalari. Thus, the Zandalari allied race was moved back until 8.1.5 so they could be released alongside Kul Tirans, while Mag’har orcs (the Horde allied race originally planned for 8.1.5) were moved forward to 8.0 as the Horde equivalent to Dark Irons.[2]
  • Although the combination was shown on a presentation during BlizzCon 2018, playable Zandalari troll warlocks are not available because the Zandalari have no connection to fel magic.[3] Despite this, there are several Zandalari trolls that use warlock abilities such as: Apprentice Valin’ini, Atal’zul Zealots, Innkeeper Rakakan, Quartermaster Boonzali, Shadra Betrayers, Witchdoctor Yoksa, Zandalari Overlord and Za’roco the Grifter.
  • In the PTR, their racial description was originally as such: Descended from the first troll tribes, the Zandalari are an ancient kingdom steeped in ritual and superstition. Their warriors ride mighty dinosaurs into battle, and they possess one of the most formidable fleets in the known world. MMO-Champion — Wintergrasp Play With The Blues, Patch 8.1.5 PTR — Build 29418

The Zandalari prelates have always worshiped Rezan, loa of kings. At the start of the expansion, players questing in Zuldazar met High Prelate Rata and heard the following from her:

We are Prelates of Rezan, the supreme order of holy warriors serving all the loa.

Our path is not for everyone. We accept those who have been marked with the sign of the loa since birth and gifted with the ability to fight bravely. We are creating champions of the Light to defend our empire.

You cannot join our ranks now. We don’t accept anyone.

After Rezan’s death, many prelates lost contact with the Light:

        We are broken.

Rezan’s light has left us. Only those who followed the great king of the loa have strength left, but they also doubt themselves.

We lived to serve. Who will we become now?

However, not all of Rezan’s followers lost their faith. An example is the Champion of the Light Battle of Dazar’alor Raid Strategy Guide in Dazar’alor, Ra’wani Kana.

        History of the Zandalari trolls

The Zandalari trolls are an ancient and powerful people. Once they fought for world domination along with the mogu and Lei Shen, but then they suffered several defeats in a row — the tol’vir, pandaren and night elves turned out to be too strong opponents for the Zandalari. In classic WoW, the Zandalari trolls helped players clean up Zul’Gurub, but in Mists of Pandaria, they once again turned against the Horde and the Alliance by trying to revive Lei Shen on the Isle of Thunder.

In Battle for Azeroth, the Zandalari trolls and their lands are at the heart of the story for the Horde.

While attempting to follow Saurfang into Stormwind, the players encountered and freed Princess Talanji. In gratitude, the Zandalari trolls joined the Horde and asked for help in the war. The Horde willingly offered to help in exchange for ships from the Zandalari fleet.

At the beginning of the expansion, the Zandalari Empire was going through hard times — the prophet Zul wanted to take the place of King Rastakhan, and therefore weaved intrigues against the monarch. Rastakhan, in an attempt to regain the throne, lost the loa of the kings of Rezan and made a pact with a new patron, the death loa of Bwonsamdi.

The empire later suffered another blow in the form of an Alliance attack on Dazar’alor. Despite help from the Horde, King Rastakhan died in battle, and Princess Talanji learned of her father’s deal with Bwonsamdi.

After Rastakhan’s death, Talanji became queen of the Zandalari. In the allied race access scenario, we see them performing sacred rituals and celebrating their coronation. The Zandalari join the Horde, but Talanji notes that it should be an equal alliance. Bwonsamdi offers the queen a new deal. He is willing to release Talanji from his obligations in exchange for Sylvanas’ head. The Queen rejects this offer and says that she is ready to exchange honor for freedom.

        Music of the Zandalari Trolls

Zandalari culture is a mixture of cultures from peoples from South America and Mesoamerica, where clay flutes, rattles, maracas and other percussion instruments are used as the main musical instruments.

Below is a recording of the sounds made by the teponazl drum, one of the two sacred musical instruments of the Aztecs.

We hear the same sounds in the «Zandalar Forever» cutscene:

At the start of Battle for Azeroth, many players were raving about the «City of Gold» theme music. One of the many parts of the theme is played on a multi-barreled flute and starts at the 4:35 mark.
