Opposing the Iron Horde are the heroes of Azeroth—at the heights of power they’ve always been destined for. Even if you’re new or returning to the game, Warlords empowers you to boost one of your characters to level 90 and master new abilities at the gateway to Draenor, so that you can charge into grand combat right away. Play the races and classes you’ve always wanted to try, wage war alongside your friends, and take your place among Warcraft’s finest.[1]

The Character Boost (or simply boost) is a paid service that allows any character to be upgraded to a higher level that isn’t already on the specified level. Purchasing an expansion grants a single character boost during the time of that expansion:

  • level 90 Character Boost was granted with the purchase of the Warlords of Draenor expansion
  • level 100 Character Boost was granted with the purchase of the Legion expansion
  • level 110 Character Boost was granted with the purchase of the Battle for Azeroth expansion
  • level 120 Character Boost was granted with the pre-purchase of the Shadowlands expansion
  • level 50 Character Boost is granted with the purchase of the Shadowlands expansion
  • level 60 Character Boost is granted with the pre-purchase of the Dragonflight expansion

The Character Boost can be purchased through the in-game shop, currently priced at $60/£40.

Please Note: Purchasing a new boost that provides a higher level than the previous will not replace the lower one that is still unused (e.g. purchasing a level 110 boost will not replace a level 100 boost if that is still unused).
Demon hunters can’t be boosted and allied races will not receive their heritage armor set if boosted.

There comes a time in every hero’s quest when they need a little boost to help get them over the hump and back into the action. With a level 110 character boost, you can grant one character a one-time boost to level 110 instantly.

*Boosting an Allied Race will not unlock their heritage armor set.

Level 90 Boost

This section concerns content related to Warlords of Draenor.

  • A single character to level 90 (the Mists of Pandaria level cap)
  • A full set of specialization-appropriate ilevel 483 uncommon-quality gear (specialization is selected during the Boost)
  • All class and specialization abilities appropriate to that level (except mage portal spells) — these will be progressively unlocked through a short series of quests (see below)

    • If the account does not own a flying mount, a faction-specific flying mount — a Wind Rider for Horde or Gryphon for Alliance

Since the release of patch 8. 0.1, players who bought a boost before July 19, 2018, but didn’t use it til after July 16, 2018, are eligible for a refund through August 12, 2018, due to the removal of the profession boost for characters at or above level 60 that had their existing primary professions and First Aid skill boosted to 800 skill level.[4]

Level 120 Boost

Limitations and Restrictions

  • Make sure you’re okay with your decision before you finalize the boost. Blizzard will not assist with anything related to completed boosts.
  • You can’t boost a character if they have a WoW Token in their inventory, bank, or mailbox.
  • Your character’s quest log will be cleared during the boost, and any quest progress will be lost.
  • You can’t purchase character services on your boosted character for 72 hours. You’ll see Error 20078 if you try to buy a Faction Change, Character Transfer, Race Change, Appearance Change or Name Change during this time.
  • Warlords of Draenor Garrisons must be unlocked through normal play.
  • Boosted characters are unable to enter dungeons and raids from previous expansions for 24 hours.
  • Boosting an Allied Race character will prevent them from earning their Heritage Armor.

Veteran Bonus

The subject of this section was removed from World of Warcraft in patch 8.0.1.

If the selected character is level 60 or higher, it would have had its two primary professions and First Aid increased to skill 800. If the character did not have any professions learned, the game would have provided defaults based on the type of armor the character wears. [5]

Introductory experience

Freshly boosted characters do not immediately have access to all abilities appropriate to their level. Rather, they start out with a basic set of spells and abilities for their class, and must unlock the rest of their spells and abilities a few at a time by advancing through a short introductory experience.

After Patch 6.0.2, but before the release of Warlords of Draenor, boosted characters had to unlock their abilities through the Iron Horde Incursion world event in the Blasted Lands. With the release of Warlords, boosted characters instead acquire their abilities through the Warlords of Draenor intro experience.[6]

Veteran players that want to skip this progression of spells and abilities may either swap specializations or queue for an instance. This will unlock the remaining spells and abilities.[7]

Notes

  • Previously, sometimes the server could be busy, and you would get a notification that it may be a few minutes. This was an issue when the boosts were first introduced.
  • Boosts do not have to be used immediately. Once obtained, a Boost can be held indefinitely until the player is ready to use it.
  • Note that the gear granted is specialization-specific. Gear for other specializations will not be supplied, and players should therefore take care to select their preferred specialization. However, obtaining level-appropriate gear for any spec is particularly easy on the Timeless Isle.
  • Boosted characters are immediately equipped with their new gear. The items that were on the character are mailed back to them. This mail expires after 180 days.[8]
  • Note that Master flying (The fastest flying speed) is not provided. This can be purchased from riding trainers for 5000, subject to faction discounts.
  • Boosted characters will also receive any appropriate level-specific mail, namely A Well-Deserved Accomplishment (from Lorewalker Cho) for reaching level 90, and a  [Magically Wrapped Gift] (from Rhonin) if the character was boosted past level 80.
  • The What’s New button on the Game Menu is replaced with Character Boost until the character unlocks the Garrison.
  • Boosted characters will not be able to enter dungeons and raids from previous expansions for 24 hours after being boosted.
  • After completing the tutorial for the level 100 character boost, the player is immediately given  [10-45] The Battle for Broken Shore and placed in the corresponding scenario. However, if you have previously completed the Legion intro experience, it is possible to skip it just like on a normal character: by leaving the scenario or abandoning the quest after completing it, and then talking to Recruiter Lee/Holgar Stormaxe to skip directly to  [10-45] In the Blink of an Eye. This even applies to Class Trial characters.
  • Any unused Level 90 Character Boosts were converted to Level 100 Character Boosts with the release of the Level 110 Character Boosts.[9]

Trivia

  • When the boosts were first introduced on February 18, 2014, new 90s spawned at their faction’s landing on the Timeless Isle. This quickly became a problem, as new 90s are automatically flagged for PvP, and on PvE servers players with the  [Censer of Eternal Agony] would camp the spawn locations for easy kills. The spawning point was later moved to the faction shrines in Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

Gear

Main article: Character Boost gear list

When a character is boosted to level 90 or level 100, all gear slots are emptied and filled with new specialization-appropriate ilevel 483 (or ilevel 640 for level 100) uncommon-quality gear. The previous gear is mailed to the character. These mailed items may include Timeless items that were earlier mailed to the character by other characters on the same account. The boosted character can immediately turn these into epic quality gear, increasing that character’s item level even more.

Q: How does boosting a character work?

When you pre-purchase the expansion* or purchase a standalone character boost from within the game, a Character Boost token will appear on the character-select screen in World of Warcraft. Once you purchase it through either method, you can click the token to apply your boost at any time—no need to use it right away if you’re not ready. Keep in mind that character boosts are irreversible, so it’s a good idea to make sure you’re boosting the character you really want to.

If you boost a level-60 or higher character, you’ll also get an extra bonus: both of your Primary Professions will be bumped up to 600, so you’ll be an instant pro at your chosen callings. If you’re boosting an existing character and want to change professions, just make sure you train the professions you want before you apply the boost. Also, if you’re not quite level 60 yet (but thiiiiiiis close), you might want to consider holding on to your boost token until you earn those last couple of levels—your boost will still be waiting for you when you’re ready.

Q: What do I get with my character boost?

When you boost a character to level 90, whether it’s a newly created level-1 character or an existing character with some experience under their belt, you’ll receive the following:

  • 150 gold
  • 4 Embersilk (22-slot) bags
  • A stack of 20 food items
  • Full set of spec-appropriate Item Level 483 (blue-quality) gear [this appears to incorrect — gear is green, not blue]
  • If a boosted character was already level 60 or above, their existing Primary Professions and First Aid are bumped up to level 600, as mentioned above
  • A faction-specific flying mount—a traditional Wind Rider for Horde or Gryphon for Alliance
  • Artisan flying—that’s one rank below max flight speed
  • Northrend, Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdoms, and Pandaria regional flying skills trained

Q: Can I apply my character boost to any character on any World of Warcraft account?

That depends! If you pre-purchase the expansion, the Character Boost token will only appear when you’re logged in to the WoW account you upgraded to Warlords of Draenor. If you purchase a standalone character boost, you’ll be able to use it on any eligible World of Warcraft account on your Battle.net account.

Note that if you’re upgrading to Warlords of Draenor directly from the World of Warcraft Starter Edition, it may take up to 72 hours for you to receive your character boost.

Q: Can I get a character boost immediately if I decide to pre-order a physical standard or Collector’s Edition from a retailer?

Players who purchase the normal physical standard edition or physical Collector’s Edition from a retail store will get their character boost when they receive their copies at the launch of the expansion.

Players who purchase the retail version of World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor — Pre-Purchase Version with the red banner «Pre-Purchase to get Instant Level 90 Character Boost» will get the character boost as soon as they enter the code included in the box into the Account Page. The upgrade can also be bought digitally from the Battle. net Shop using a range of payment methods (including Battle.net Balance gift cards).

      Character Boost is one of the many services Blizzard made available for purchase to players on their in-game shop. This service is used to instantly level a character to level 60, preparing it for the first steps of max-level Shadowlands content. On this guide, you will learn how character boosting works, including first steps, contents of a character after boosting it, and how to unlock contents from previous expansions on a boosted a character.

      You can obtain Character Boosts in two ways:

      • Purchasing the Shadowlands Expansion, Heroic or Epic edition, gives you a Character Boost free of charge.
      • Subsequent Character Boosts must be purchased in the in-game shop, only accessible from within the game. A Character Boost costs $60.

      Boosting a Character

      After your purchase is confirmed, a boost button will show up near the Change Realm button in your character selection screen. When you click it, a new menu will pop up, which will guide you through the rest of the process.

      This new menu offers you two different boosting options:

      • Boost an already existing character in your current realm.
      • Boost a brand-new character in your current realm.

      Boosting an Existing Character

      Note: If you boost a character from an Allied Raceit won’t be elegible to unlock Heritage Armor.

      In order to boost an existing character, all you need to do is to select it with the boost menu open. After selecting your character, you will be prompted to select its main specialization.

      This decision will control which equipments you will receive once the boost is finished. You will receive a full item level 148 gearset.
      After selection a specialization, you must press the Next button. Doing so will prompt a first confirmation window. If everything checks out, click Level Up!. Lastly, a final prompt will appear, asking if all information provided is correct, if everything is right, click Level Up!.

      After that step is complete, you must wait until the process is completed, which maybe take a few minutes or a couple hours, depending on the availability from the servers.

      Note: Boosted characters are unable to enter dungeons and raids from previous expansions for 24 hours.

      Character After Boosting

      Once the boost is completed, your character will appear in Oribos, by western edge where the portals to Stormwind and Orgrimmar are.

      After finishing your class training, you will have access to your talent selection screen (default keybind N). Your character will have all first talents in each talent row selected by default, and while in a capital city or rest area, you can freely change your talents. After finishing your class training, you will also be able to change your specialization, if you so wish. You can read more about which talents your character should have in our Class Guides!

      Unlocking Shadowlands Content

      When you first log in on your boosted character, you will find yourself on a gunship flying atop Icecrown. This gunship serves as the tutorial for your boosted character, where you will learn about your most basic spells. Once you’re done with the gunship tutorial (or simply Hearthstone out of the ship), you will appear in Oribos.

      All Shadowlands leveling content including zone achievements will be completed on your boosted character, and you will have one quest in your questlog: Choosing Your Purpose, where you will head to the Enclave and choose your Covenant. After this, you should be able to start Shadowlands content as a fresh level 60.

      Bag Contents

      When the boost is complete, your character bags are replaced by 4 Embersilk Bag, which gives you a lot of bag space. You may also unlock 4 extra backpack slots by attaching an authenticator to your Battle.net account. Inside your backpack you will find:

      Once you get accommodated to your character, you will likely start your journey through Shadowlands. Below, we will detail how to unlock contents from past expansions!

      • Battle for Azeroth Content: Your boosted character will have Battle for Azeroth World Quests and the leveling War Campaign footholds already unlocked. To progress through Battle for Azeroth content, you can use your Hearthstone to return to Boralus/Dazar’alor and then:
        Go to your faction’s boat to continue the Alliance or Horde War Campaigns, or start the introduction questline to Nazjatar and Mechagon;
      • Take the portal to Silithus to start unlocking your Heart of Azeroth Artifact.

      Legion Content: Find a Hero’s Call Board/Warchief’s Command Board, interact with them and select Fight the Legion. It will give you the quest Legion: The Legion Returns/Legion: The Legion Returns. Note that if you have already done all the intro questlines for Legion with any character in your account you can skip the following quests by selecting I’ve heard this tale before… instead of completing the quest.
      Warlords of Draenor Content: Find a Hero’s Call Board/Warchief’s Command Board, interact with them and select Enter the Dark Portal. Head to the Blasted Lands by taking the portal by the Stormwind Mage Tower/Cleft of Shadow in Orgrimmar, and complete the questlines there to unlock access to Draenor.
      Mists of Pandaria Content: Find a Hero’s Call Board/Warchief’s Command Board, interact with them and select The Jade Forest. This will give you the introduction quest to Pandaria.

      • You can track Warboards by clicking on the magnifying glass icon on your map and selecting «Track Warboards».
      • Note that Quest Boards can only show three options at a time, so you may need to accept other quests from them before having Pandaria and earlier ones appear.

      Cataclysm Content and below: Still using the Hero’s Call Board/Warchief’s Command Board, you can select breadcrumb quests to all Cataclysm zones. The initial available zones are Mount Hyjal and Twilight Highlands, but you will receive quests for Vashj’ir, Deepholm and Uldum. You can continuing taking quests from the Call Boards for past content such as Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King zones.

      Azeroth AutoPilot

      Items and mounts

      Experience Boost

      • Let’s start with something new. Patch 8.1 introduced the Flask of Ten Realms. After drinking such a jar, you will receive 10% additional experience, and your characteristics will increase by 10 points.
      • Insight Rubellite. This stone will give you an additional 5% experience. Please note that with the release of patch 8.1, it will not be possible to insert it into the old equipment, and it is extremely difficult to get a new item with a socket.

      Movement Boost

      • New in patch 8.1 is an account-bound map with flight points. Honorbound Tactical Map for Horde and 7th Legion Tactical Map.       Useful Legendary Items

      Path Selection

      In patch 8.1, you can quickly level up to level 120 in two ways:

      1. Complete quests. By pumping a character on quests, you travel across Azeroth in accordance with the storyline. Complete the missions of the Military Campaign, which we will talk about later. All this is important in order to open local quests, flight routes and upgrade your reputation.

      Questing

      Heart of Azeroth

      Leveling a new character, like the Battle for Azeroth plot, begins with obtaining the Heart of Azeroth necklace. To do this, fly to Silithus and take the quest from Magni Bronzebeard. Once you get the necklace, you can equip your Azerite armor and choose the available talents. During pumping, it will not be very important what you choose.

      Choosing a location

      You can start your journey through Azareoth in different ways. If you’re a Horde player, it’s recommended that you complete Voldun first, as a lot of the mobs in the last levels don’t scale properly, which can cause some difficulties. Therefore, it is better to stick to order Voldun > Zuldazar > Nazmir . The Alliance should start at Drustvar , continue at Tiragarde Sound and end at Stormsong Valley . Complete all quests that Azerot Auto Pilot guides you on.

      If you want to level up quickly, then you should go to the dungeons only with a quest, that is, once at the end of the location. The loot there is not bad, but they give little experience without a quest. It’s better to get to level 120 as soon as possible and start going through dungeons purposefully for the sake of loot on higher difficulties.

      Rare and Treasures for the War Campaign

      So the autopilot guides you through the right quests. On the way you will meet rare mobs — skip them. They give little experience for them, a useful item can fall from them, but no more, and fights with them are quite long. If you want to level up a character quickly, then it’s not worth it.

      Treasures! You will come across treasure chests. They must be collected. They will be needed to open the Military Campaign. To do this, it is enough to get only 100 units of resources. You can collect the rest of the treasures at level 120 during world quests.

      Do not sell equipment

      During the leveling of the character, you will drop a lot of all kinds of gear. In no case do not sell even the one that you will not wear. Save it for recycling. You will receive resources after disposing of the item, which will be useful to you for crafting, including the raid gear.

      The Horde Recycler is located in Boralus, in the Market of the Seven Winds, at coordinates — 77.16

      In order not to waste time on scrap while pumping between locations, use your bank in the capital. Upon reaching level 120, you will have time to dispose of all the accumulated good. If you are not interested in such crafting, then it is better to leave the items for dezinchant. If you do not want to do this, then the only way out is to sell all this stuff.

      Military Campaign

      The Military Campaign is the main storyline of the expansion and opens up various possibilities in the game. Companion quests, additional flight routes and other usefulness.

      To start a military campaign, you need to choose the first location for pumping and report to the ship at the port. You will be asked to accumulate 100 war resources. Therefore, to begin with, it is worth going through one location completely, and already at level 112-113 return to the ship.

      The third location should be interrupted before reaching the maximum level, for the sake of the last attack, since it is done in any case, and some quests in locations are not required.

      Professions

      Choose gathering professions such as Herbalism and Mining. You will be able to pump them without looking up from completing quests. The collection process gives a little experience, and with the collected resources you can earn extra money at the auction.

      Don’t forget to use the Sky Golem if you want to collect resources faster, as well as new glove enchants to speed up the collection of the necessary resources.

      Expeditions

      To join an expedition, you must register with the expedition card. The expedition is designed for 3 people. If you go with friends, it will be much easier. Your task is to collect Azerite faster than the enemy. To do this, go to the marked places on the map, kill strong opponents and be sure to collect all the Azerite around.

      Leveling on quests

    • Cons: long, little azerite

    Leveling in Expeditions

    • Pros: fast, a lot of azerite
    • Cons: lack of a source of loot for both dressing and salvage, turnips do not swing, the world is not explored.

    Leveling on quests is required for the first character or for any main character. Indeed, in order to complete the achievement of the Pathfinder, you have to do almost all the quests. And expeditions are a great option for quickly leveling alts in a party with friends.
