In Mists of Pandaria, through the Order of the Cloud Serpent faction, you took care of a newly hatched Cloud Serpent hatchling. Through quests and daily quest you raised that hatchling and watched it grow to eventually be your first Cloud Serpent mount. In Battle for Azeroth, a hidden quest line can be found that leads to a similar experience. Along with your adventures, you will discover a pterrordax egg that ultimately falls to you to take care of. It is from that egg that a special pterrordax named Kua’fon hatches. Over the course of an impressive 29-day quest and daily quest grind, you will take care of Kua’fon and watch as the hatchling grows to become a full-sized pterrordax. The questline is long from start to finish, but there are rewards at the end of it.

If you’re looking to track your collections, Wowhead now has the Battle Pet Collection Tracker and Mount Collection Tracker! To use the tracker, simply import your character to view your collections. You can read more about how to use this feature here!

Requirements

  • This questline is only available on Horde characters.
  • You must be level 120 to accept the quest from the quest item to begin this chain.
  • A minimum of 29 days from start to finish.

Rewards

Upon completing the final quest in this chain, Down, But Not Out, you are awarded with Kua’fon’s Harness. Kua’fon acts as a ground-only mount. While it may be unintended, this mount is usable on Alliance characters despite the questline only being available to Horde characters. You are also awarded the achievement, How to Ptrain Your Pterrordax.

In Patch 8.2 Rise of Azshara, characters that have completed Down, But Not Out and earned Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part Two will have access to an additional quest that will allow Kua’fon to fly.

Quests and Daily Quests

The start of this journey begins from the Pterrordax Egg which is an extremely rare drop from several pterrordax NPCs throughout Zandalar. Bloodraged Pterrordax at Zanchul and the Pterrordax Skyrender at Skyrender Eyrie have a chance to drop this egg. Looting the egg will start the quest A Child of Pa’ku. You need to take the egg to Pa’ku located at Pterror Rise which is up the path located just south of Warbeast Kraal. Pa’ku will put you in charge of the pterrordax and give you the quest Your Problem Now. Head to the south edge of Pterror Rise and place the egg in the nest.

Shortly after placing the egg in the nest, Kau’fon will hatch from the egg and now you have your own pterrordax hatchling! However you have no experience on how to take care of the hatchling and after it lets out a continuous SKREEEEE!, you realize you need help and the quest SKREEEEE! is given to you. Pa’ku tells you the hatchling is hungry and to ask for food at Warbeast Kraal. Meatminder Teki, a little north of the Warbeast Kraal flight master, will sell you Infant Dino Kibble. Take the food to Kua’fon and he will devour it and then proceed to sleep. You then meet Wingminder Goja who will be next to your hatchling, offering to help you take care of it.

Step 1: Nature vs Nurture

At this point you are given the quest Nature Versus Nurture and have access to the daily quest starting on the next daily reset. You will also notice an experience bar appear above Kua’fon. You will slowly fill that experience bar by completing the daily quest given by either Kua’fon or Wingminder Goja. This step of the process takes 7 daily quests to complete. Once the experience bar has been filled, Nature Versus Nurture can be turned in and the next quest in the chain, The Call of the Skies, will become available.

If you fill the experience bar and it resets to an empty bar, but do not see the option to turn in Nature Versus Nurture, make sure to log out and back in and the quest turn-in should appear on Kua’fon

At this stage you will receive one daily from the ones below. The quest is random each day but is the same for all players on this step.
A Nose for Ptrouble         You will need to locate your hatchling and defeat the Territorial Razorwing that Kua’fon has challenged. Kua’fon is not always in the exact same location but will be in the area marked on the map. Kua’fon’s exact location will show on the minimap when you are close enough.
SKREEEEE! You need to feed Kua’fon Infant Dino Kibble which can be purchased from Meatminder Teki at Warbeast Kraal.
Skree… Simply right-click on Kua’fon to pick him up. At this point the quest is complete and you can click on the nest to set him back down to turn in. Or you can continue to hold him for up to 10 minutes. There is no increase in reward for holding him longer.
Out on a Limb Kua’fon has got himself stuck on a ledge and you will need to use a nearby stick to help him get down. Clicking on the stick will encourage your hatchling down and complete the objective.

Kua’fon’s First Flight

After completing Nature Versus Nurture, you are given The Call of the Skies. Your hatchling attempts to fly for the first time by leaping off the edge. Unfortunately, the attempt is a failure and the hatchling falls. Pa’ku tells that your hatchling should be fine and will need to learn not to be afraid to try again.

Pick up Fear of Falling and then you must find and retrieve your hatchling down at Talanji’s Rebuke. Kua’fon will be hiding under the shipwreck against the cliff’s edge. The hatchling is too afraid to leave, you will need to gather 8 Shimmerfin Flesh from Fatty Shimmerfin in the waters around Talanji’s Rebuke to convince him to follow you.

Once Kua’fon has been soothed by the food offering, he will offer Back to the Nest and follow you. You need to guide him back up to the nest on Pterror Rise. Kua’fon does not enter combat and will follow you while mounted so you are safe to run through enemies. When you approach his nest, Kua’fon will automatically leap back into the nest and take a nap.

Wingminder Goja will offer Room To Grow which starts the 2nd stage of the daily quest grind and an empty experience bar above Kua’fon appears again. The first daily quest will be given on the next daily reset where you will also find out that Kua’fon has grown quite bigger!

Step 2: Room to Grow

Room To Grow takes 14 daily quests to complete. Each quest will slowly fill the experience bar above Kua’fon. You are still given only one daily quest a day, however the quests are all different this time with some completely new ones added to the mix. There are 5 possible daily quests, the active quest is chosen at random. The daily quest will be the same for all players on this stage of the Kua’fon quest line, but different from players on other stages of the quest line.

This stage of dailies contains some completely new quests as well as similar ones but with some changes.
Players on this stage will NOT have the same daily as players on other stages.
A Nose for Ptrouble           This time Kua’fon will be near Atal’Gral, a bit northeast of Pterror Rise. Defeat the Dreadcoil Aggressor that Kua’fon has challenged to complete the quest.
SKREEEEE! Kua’fon needs to be fed Free-Range Dino Chow now that he has grown up a bit. This is purchased from Meatminder Teki at Warbeast Kraal.
Kua’fon’s Day Off Kua’fon has found his way to the Port of Zandalar and is being a nuisance. You need to find him at the harbor and stop him.
No Ptake, Only Throw Kua’fon places his new toy, Kua’fon’s Favorite Skull, in your hands. You can then throw it and Kua’fon will run over to pick it up. He may do different things after he picks up the skull such as make you try to catch him or running back to you and dropping the skull at your feet. Keep playing with Kua’fon and his skull until the quest completes.
Mast Effect Kua’fon has fallen off the ledge again! You will need to locate him at Talanji’s Rebuke, collect 8 Shimmerfin Flesh from Fatty Shimmerfin and feed him to convince him to come down from his location

Kua’fon’s Second «Flight»

After 14 dailies while Kua’fon is a juvenile pterrordax, Room To Grow will complete. Kua’fon still can not fly but the skies call to him, leaving the pterrordax depressed.

Grab A Pterrible Fate and talk to Pa’ku to see what advice she can give. Pa’ku wants to throw the hatchling over the ledge again but then considers another way that may work. Pa’ku will offer Surrogate Wings and have you head to Zuldazar city to obtain something that can act as wings for your pterrordax. Due west and down one level from the Port of Zandalar flight master is Elly Fraze who sells a Huge Dragon Kite for 119 gold.

Take the kite to Wingminder Goja and accept Ptrust Fall. Wingminder Goja ties Kua’fon to the Dragon Kite and you will be riding and steering the kite through cloud rings while avoiding the gusts of wind. After flying Kua’fon through enough rings, you land to meet Pa’ku. However even after the flight, Kua’fon does not fly which annoys Pa’ku. As a lesson, Pa’ku has Kua’fon return to the roost at Pterror Rise by himself, since a pterrordax should simply be able to fly back up.

Pick up Maybe When You’re Older from Pa’ku and then mount the nearby pterrordax to be flown back up to the roost, leaving Kua’fon alone as he begins a long run back up.

Step 3: Eyes on the Skies

Eyes on the Skies unlocks access to the final step of daily quests for raising Kua’fon. This step takes 7 dailies to complete with the first quest being available on the next daily quest reset. Like before, only one daily quest is given and this step offers a completely new quest along with modifications to some older ones.

The final section of dailies has a new quest as well as some similar ones but with changes.
Players on this stage may NOT have the same daily as players on the previous stages.
A Nose for Ptrouble           This time Kua’fon is trying to take on the large beasts of the Savagelands. Defeat the creature Kua’fon has challenged to complete the quest. Be warned, the enemy you fight this time is an elite with a decent amount of health.
Falling With Style            Similar to the quest Ptrust Fall, Kua’fon will be tied to the Dragon Kite and you steer the kite through cloud rings while avoiding the gusts of wind. Hit enough rings to fill the progress bar. If you fail, take the pterrordax back up and try again.
SKREEEEE! Kua’fon is on his way to adulthood and needs to be fed Extra-Chunky Dino Food now. This is purchased from Meatminder Teki at Warbeast Kraal.
Kua’fon’s Day Off Kua’fon is being a nuisance in the city once more. This time he will be found somewhere at the Terrace of the Chosen just west of The Sliver flight master. Stop him.

Finale: Down, But Not Out

Once the experience bar above Kua’fon completely fills, you need to talk to Pa’ku. Kua’fon won’t always be present at the nest for you to see if he has enough experience. Check if the quest objective for Eyes on the Skies changes from «Tend to Kua’fon» to «Speak with Pa’ku» to know that you are done with dailies. Pa’ku will be highlighted and shown on the map also if you are unsure if you finished. Speak with Pa’ku and then head back over to your pterrordax to turn in Eyes on the Skies.

Kua’fon gives Aerial Aspirations and then click him to jump on his back. Your pterrordax attempts to fly with you on him. Kua’fon manages to fly for a little bit, but ultimately falls. The flight exhausts him and he is unable to move for some time.

Take the next quest, Wisdom of the Wingless and this time you are seeking Hexlord Raal for advice. Head back up to the roost at Pterror Rise where Hexlord Raal is waiting for you. He suggests that if Kua’fon is to fly, the pterrordax will need armor for protection.

For Dress for the Slide, Not the Ride, you need to obtain a saddle and a type of head armor for Kua’fon. Two separate vendors will sell what you need, both on opposite sides of Zuldazar city. Talutu at the Grand Bazaar at the Port of Zandalar sells Lightweight Skyterror Barding for 1250 gold and Headhunter Lani in The Head Shop at the Zocalo sells Berserker Skull for 67 gold. Take these items back to Hexlord Raal and Kua’fon down by Talanji’s Rebuke to turn in. Kua’fon is then dressed up and ready to fly, or so Raal says.

The next quest, The Joy of Flight will have you control Kua’fon with a vehicle interface. You need to fly Kua’fon as best you can while following Hexlord Raal back up to the roost. If you are too far away from Hexlord Raal for too long, the quest will fail and you will need to start again. You will get a warning if you are too far away from Hexlord Raal and he will stop, after that you have 10 seconds to catch up to him before the quest fails. You have access to two abilities: Flap and Soar. Flap will cause Kua’fon to gain a bit of height at the cost of 35 energy. Soar will cause Kua’fon to glide forward for 5 seconds, maintaining speed but slowly lose height. The best way is to keep Kua’fon airborne as long as possible by rotating between your 1 ability Flap and 2 ability Soar. It becomes more difficult to stay airborne when going up some of the hills along the way. It is fine to let Kua’fon touch the ground and walk him a little bit to rebuild energy. When you reach the waterfall at Warbeast Kraal, climb the waterfall by jumping and gliding Kua’fon to the rock ledges on the sides of the waterfall, landing on the rocks to regain energy in-between flights. Once you are up, follow Hexlord Raal across the roost and land near him to complete the quest. Kua’fon is exhausted and is unable to fly properly in the end, but is pleased with his efforts. Despite being unable to fly, Kua’fon is happy to have you as his handler and has a new found excitement for adventure.

With Kua’fon ready to go wherever you go, accept and complete Down, But Not Out to finish the quest line. If you’ve made it here following all the steps above, congratulations on your adorable and loyal pterrordax mount!

Kua’fon and Flying

Due to Kua’fon’s lack of faith in his wings, he has been unable to fly the player around even in areas where flying is allowed. However, in Patch 8.2 Rise of Azshara, Pa’ku has one more idea that may let Kua’fon overcome the fear of flying. You’ll have to trust Pa’ku on this one.

Pa’ku’s Plan: Just Ptrust Me On This

You will need to have completed the quest Down, But Not Out and earned Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part Two in order for the quest «Just Ptrust Me On This» to become available. Completing the quest «Just Ptrust Me On This» unlocks the ability for Kua’fon to fly as well as the achievement, How to Ptrain Your Pterrordax. This upgrade is account-wide.

All you need to do is pick up the quest and then talk to Pa’ku. With your trust and consent, she will try her plan.

The quest «Just Ptrust Me On This» simply asks you to put trust into Pa’ku that her plan will work. After selecting one of the dialog options, a real-time cinematic will play out. You can see that in this video.

  • Umwelt gegen Veranlagung
