It is almost impossible to buy cotton swabs, disposable plates, glasses, straws for cocktails and other plastic products here. And if in India they can be fined for violating the eco-law, in Africa there are penalties up to and including imprisonment.
Although such measures do not affect our country yet, they make us think about the global nature of environmental problems, if at the state level, violation of the environment is equated with a crime.
Changing eco habits
All steps do not happen in one day. This is a gradual process, and its success depends on the level of awareness and knowledge in this area. And although today the percentage of those who have switched to reusable packaging is very small, gradually there are more and more such people.
Unfortunately, the fact that many stores do not support people’s initiatives is a problem. They may, for example, refuse to put ready-made pilaf in your container. And they have good reasons for this: they cannot guarantee that it is clean, and they will have to be responsible for poor-quality products or poisoning. But, if you go to the same supermarket, it is quite possible to explain the impact of this step on the environment to sellers, and it is likely that they will meet you halfway.
It is more difficult for delivery companies to reduce the volume of garbage, especially in recent years, when the number of online orders has increased significantly due to the sanitary and epidemiological situation. But they also find ways, if not to get rid of, then at least to reduce waste: organize the recycling of cardboard boxes, reduce the amount of filler inside, and sometimes deliver goods without additional packaging. Perhaps in the near future food delivery companies will begin to appear, which will provide for the possibility of returning containers.
