World of Tanks: Modern Armor – Cold War Co-Op Mode!

Multiplayer battles are at the heart of World of Tanks Console. Now, it’s time for you and your fellow tankers to join forces against a common enemy.

When World of Tanks: Modern Armor launches on April 27th, you’ll have the choice of experiencing the all-new Cold War game mode in two ways:

  • The 15v15 PvP gameplay that you know and love
  • New 15v15 human versus AI Co-Op gameplay

Cold War Co-Op Mode places you on a team with fourteen other human players. You’ll be pitted against a team of fifteen savage AI players that have been programmed to achieve one goal: victory at all costs.

Can you persist against a highly evolved tactical intelligence? What does Co-Op mode hold for you and your allies? Here with all the details is Lead Game Designer Jeff Gregg!

What can you tell everyone about the design aspect of Co-Op and the Co-Op matchmaker?

At its core, Co-Op is identical to PvP random battles except you will never fight another human being. You’ll have human beings on your side, but you’ll never face another human foe. And the earning has been adjusted accordingly. Essentially, in PvP random battles, the earns are greater.

Those are the big things we wanted to be sure of. It’s identical to PvP, except that you’ll never fight another human. All of your events, all of your ops, your boosts, your daily wins, everything—it’s the same except that it’ll be fifteen players versus fifteen bots.

Will there be Co-Op for World War II?

There might be! We’re launching with Co-Op for Cold War first just to help people get used to that ecosystem and grind up those vehicle lines, since those lines are going to be brand new. We’ll expand it as quickly as we can if that’s where the desire is.

How will Co-Op matchmaking work?

Matchmaking will be the same as PvP, where you’ll only be matched with the era of tanks you’re in. But it’ll essentially grab the first fifteen valid tanks in that era that are human players and throw you into a match.

And you can Platoon in Co-Op just as you can in PvP, no problem! As a matter of fact, you can even take your Platoon back and forth if you want. If you’re the Platoon leader, you can be like, “Oh, let’s go do some PvP!” You can then switch and it shouldn’t disband your Platoon.

How will the AI team composition be determined?

The way the bots work is that they’ll mirror the player team. That was the best way we could see to be fair. So, if you end up in a match with fifteen M1A2 Abrams, the enemy team is going to be fifteen M1A2 Abrams. If you end up in a match with five M1s, five M1A1s, and five M1A2s on the human side, the bots will mirror that as well.

What about playstyles? Are the bots going to mimic what the players do?

You’ll be playing the same modes as you would in PvP random battles, so you’ll play Standard Battle, Encounter, or Team Destruction, and the bots will do whatever they can to win. If you let them capture your base, they will. If you want to Zerg their base, I invite you to try! They do not like you going right by their base, and they will try to dig you out.

They don’t mirror your actions. They just use the tanks you use to try to beat you.

How did you adjust the AI’s playstyle to get the bots’ level of play right?

In general, the further you progress down the Tech Tree, the harder the battles are going to become. We do that by essentially mirroring the same buffs that you as a human can use—Equipment, Consumables, Skills, stuff they can use to help their accuracy or defense or vision. They’re never going to cheat, like, take half damage or anything like that. They escalate their difficulty the same way your human foes do in PvP.

When we launch Modern Armor, you’re not going to see bots using Smokescreens or Hull Patch Kits. We specifically avoided Hull Patch Kits right now because whenever you see AI healing itself, it always feels like cheating, even if humans can do it. But we might explore ways for the bots to use the new Consumables. That’s not off the table.

Why do you think players should play Co-Op?

It’s all about how you want to play. There are players who really enjoy the fantasy and really enjoy the experience of playing in a tank but don’t want to be pwned by a human. So, Co-Op offers a different vibe; it’s “us versus the machine” instead of “us versus them.”

And there are going to be players who never want to play Co-Op, or who never want to play PvP, or who cross the streams and say, “I’m going to do my daily twos in Co-Op because I like to fight bots, and then I’m going to go Platoon and fight in random battles in PvP because risk is higher but the earns are higher.” Go for it!

Plus, after one minute in the Co-Op matchmaker, we throw you into a match, even if it’s just you and fourteen friendly bots against fifteen foes!

What do you see for the future of Co-Op?

We’ve talked about interesting ideas we want to do in the future.

Here’s an example: Imagine the matchmaker throwing you and four other Abrams against twenty-five Tier X World War II tanks, so it’s five versus twenty-five. That might be really exciting.

Another thing we could do is five humans versus twenty-five AI Tier Xs. Take ‘em on—can you get ‘em? And if that’s super cool, we could even consider rolling that into PvP as a mode if people like, but we can also play with that and know that we’re not screwing with PvP because, man, I don’t even know what that would do to the economy.

That’s a really cool advantage to Co-Op that we can play with ideas like that.

Honestly, I think expanding it into World War II makes sense. We’ve talked about how maybe it would be cool if you got thrown up against a Tank Commander as part of the real-time strategy game as well. It’s a system where we can cross the wires for a lot of variety that could inform random battle PvP or even event modes.

But our core idea for the launch of this Co-Op mode was that it was identical to PvP, except you never fight another human. Whenever we wanted to add, change, or remove another feature, we had to ask, “Wait, does it fit this?” and if the answer was no, then why were we doing it? We wanted to make the first experience really cool.

When it comes to Co-Op game mode, are players going to incur expenses similar to Custom Games?

Yes. Earns and expenses will be on the same systems. We’re tuning it so that you earn more in PvP random battles, which reflects the greater risk that you face in going up against other players.

With the economy in Co-Op, as players play more battles, that’s something that we’re open to feedback on, and we’re open to changing it if we feel it’s necessary.

Are you going to use heat maps and track the performance of the game mode itself?

Yeah, we’ll be able to track if a match took place in Co-Op or a PvP random battle. We can also track players and bots, or just bots. So, we can evaluate not only how are the foes doing against the players; we can also look at areas where, if the human team is being supplemented with bots, if the friendly bots are behaving differently from the enemy bots.

It might be interesting after a month to show heat maps that are PvP versus PvE to see, like, “Well, the bots are doing the same thing, but the humans react way differently!” That could be interesting to look at.

Anything else you want to tell players about Co-Op?

As always, thank you for playing! Give us feedback; try both PvP and Co-Op modes. It’s going to be interesting when you play Co-Op because it’s not just that there’s this new Co-Op mode. It’s going to be new on top of new on top of new. You’ll be starting with a whole new set of tanks to acquire that you’ll be fighting on a whole new set of maps with brand-new Consumables for the Cold War era. Feedback across the board is great, but if there’s anything specific to Co-Op, I’d really love to know about it.

Oh, and one more detail that I didn’t mention before: min install on the game is going to be Co-Op, so you can play Co-Op until the full game is installed. We figured that was the best way to get you into the action right away, so you can do Co-Op before it unlocks everything else.

Co-Op mode will be coming to the game when World of Tanks: Modern Armor launches on April 27th!

Are you and your closest allies ready to unite against a singular threat? Got more questions about Co-Op mode? Let us know in the forums!

Take the fight forward. Roll out!

Games like World of Tanks

MMO-action World of Tanks has won a multi-million audience around the world, becoming one of the most successful projects developed by studios from the CIS.

But despite such a huge popularity of WoT, there are those who are looking for an alternative to the “potato”: they don’t like the gameplay, don’t like the donation system, or just want to try something new. It is for such gamers that we have prepared a rating of games like World of Tanks.

War Thunder

A selection of the best online games similar to WoT is opened by War Thunder — a multiplayer military simulator dedicated to land, air and sea equipment of the 30-60s.

There are several distinctive features of the project that distinguish it from its competitors: the presence of arcade and simulation modes that allow you to both have fun in dynamic skirmishes and take part in battles with conditions close to reality; well-designed system that combines air and tank battles; beautiful graphics and a destruction system that allows you to transform cards during the match beyond recognition. In general, if you are looking for a replacement for World of Tanks, then you will not find a better option.

play

Armored Warfare: Project Armata

A tank simulator on PC, one of the main rivals of World of Tanks, which shifted the time frame of the setting relative to its competitors forward: Armored Warfare: The Armored Warfare project is dedicated to modern military equipment, from the 50s of the twentieth century and up to the most modern models, like the T-14 Armata tank, which was included in the subtitle of the game. This left its mark on the gameplay of the project: the battles in AW became more furious and faster, and the players got the opportunity to use new tactical options — for example, guided anti-tank missiles.

Play

ExoTanks

A tank action game with MOBA elements that will challenge you to fight for the resources of Mars, participating on the side of one of the two opposing factions. The game boasts a pretty picture, furious arcade shootouts and a choice of several tank classes, each of which has unique skills, including ultimates. Perhaps there is no depth of World of Tanks gameplay here, but the action is more than enough.

Play

World of Tanks: Blitz

Blitz is the younger brother of World of Tanks, which was originally released on mobile platforms as its simplified version, but later grew noticeably and migrated to PC. Many tank fans have already seen mechanics — damage physics, modes, pumping, tank branches. Players are invited to join in quick battles in a 7vs7 format in various modes (Normal, Rating, Revival, Gravity and others).

Blitz feels good to this day both on mobile platforms and on PC, and if you want to play something that is as close to World of Tanks as possible, then welcome!

Play

Ground War: Tanks

A Chinese clone of World of Tanks that managed to find its niche in the genre and even got out of its homeland — for example, our game is published by Mail.ru. The main difference between this online game about tanks and WoT is the lack of a client — it works right in the browser.

In other respects, the project falls short of the eminent competitor: there are fewer modes, the fleet of vehicles is not so extensive, and the gameplay does not impress with tactical depth and variety. Nevertheless, Ground War: Tanks deserves a place in our selection — the action will be a suitable option when you want to play something like WoT, but the computer’s power does not allow.

Play

Metal War Online

A futuristic action game that challenges players to fight against each other while driving powerful war machines divided into several classes. Metal War Online is far from a tank simulator — it’s more of a racing arcade game with skirmishes, but there are tanks in the game, and the gameplay can be described as «WoT on adrenaline».

Play

Total Tank Simulator

Visually, Total Tank Simulator is nothing like World of Tanks. This is a colorful mixture of strategy and simulation, in which the player is asked to lead an army of blue or red. He will have to place artillery, units and equipment on the map and watch a fierce battle from a bird’s eye view.

However, at any time you can take a combat unit under personal control, and then the game turns into a rich action. Just like in World of Tanks, here you can control tanks, and tactical decisions have a big impact on the outcome of the battle. The game is designed for a single passage, but you will not get bored here.

Buy now

TankZone Battle

The gameplay of the strategic action game TankZone Battle focuses on dynamic and fast battles – the maps are small here, and there is nowhere to roam. But did you come to the tank simulator for beautiful landscapes?

In TankZone Battle you will create your own tank using a wide range of tools and plunge into hot and dynamic battles almost immediately. Battles are more like Counter-Strike than World of Tanks — tactics, of course, are present, but often teamwork does not affect the outcome. The absence of microtransactions is also pleasing — the game, of course, is paid, but the developers did not kill the project with donations.

As a result — a great dynamic action game that will appeal to fans of intense battles.

Buy Now

Battle Tanks: Legends of World War II

An arcade tank shooter with unexpectedly good picture and destructibility model, as for a project from mobile platforms, a large selection of tanks and rich customization. In addition, the game boasts several modes, various maps, as well as rating battles and tournaments with prizes, and therefore will become a completely acceptable alternative to World of Tanks.

Play

Armada: Modern Tanks

Armada: Modern Tanks is an MMO action game that came to the PC straight from mobile platforms, which imposes its own restrictions on the number of participants in a match, the quality of graphics and the variety of modes. Nevertheless, this is a very peppy project in which you will fight with other players driving modern tanks, including Leopard, Abrams and, of course, Armata.

Play

Tank Force

Tank Force is a free tank game that balances realistic simulation and arcade shooter. Players are invited to control modern combat vehicles of the Russian Federation, the Asian region and NATO and come together in large-scale 10 vs 10 battles. Victories in battles will help upgrade equipment, unlock new types, and also purchase modifications for steel monsters that rest in the hangar.

As it is clear from the description, in many ways Tank Force is similar to World of Tanks. The game also boasts realistic combat arenas and well-developed technical side (destructible environment, nice graphics). However, be prepared for imbalance and donation, which is what gamers mainly complain about.

Play

Infinite Tanks

Infinite Tanks is a tank action game from indie developers set in modern times. Like the other games in the collection, this one invites you to clash in numerous arenas, using and improving armored vehicles. The project also has its own zest, which consists in the card system for creating tanks. Yes, with the help of maps here you can create any vehicle — from small and maneuverable to heavy and armor-piercing.

In addition to multiplayer modes, there is a single player campaign where you can train and take a break from massive battles.

Buy now

Refight:Burning Engine

Battle royale on tanks – yes, the trend in the shooter genre has also reached tank battles. Refight:Burning Engine matches involve up to 50 players who land on the island and begin to destroy each other, along the way collecting ammunition, power-ups and components for the combat vehicle on the map.

According to the rules of battle royale, the zone available to gamers is gradually narrowing, driving the survivors into a small area, where the final battle unfolds. Again — there is little tactics and depth here, but a lot of fun and exciting shootouts.

Play

Armor MMO

An online action game dedicated to modern military equipment in all its manifestations: aviation, navy and ground combat vehicles. Despite the potentially interesting idea, the implementation of the project is somewhat lame. However, the developers are actively working on the game, quickly fixing bugs, correcting the balance and adding new content, so something good may well come out of it in the end.

Play

FeArea: Battle Royale

Fantastic arcade game in which players have to arrange a showdown in the format of a TV show of the future. In the presence of three classes of equipment (tanks, robots and cars), dynamic gameplay, pumping system and other components of the MMO action. A bonus to all of the above is nice graphics, for which the Unreal Engine 4 is responsible. At the end of 2019, the game changed its format in favor of Battle Royale.

Buy

Heroic Armored Company

A modern military action game about steel tigers that offers gamers exclusively single-player modes — a story campaign and missions. Just like in World of Tanks, there is an impressive fleet of vehicles, the surrounding objects are destructible, and the modular damage system will make the tanker think before taking a shot.

Tactical depth, unfortunately, suffers, but the game itself is quite beautiful — you can easily stare at the local natural landscapes, ignoring the enemy on the horizon.

Buy

Foxhole

If World of Tanks lacked large-scale conflicts, then an interesting Foxhole MMO game can fill this gap, in which war is constantly going on — even when you go offline. On behalf of an ordinary soldier, you will contribute to victory: it can be small — for example, various work in the camp, such as making ammunition and lining up logistics, or heroic, such as liberating enemy territory.

This conflict was not without tanks — iron beasts can solve a lot on the battlefield, but it’s definitely not worth rushing alone to certain death.

Buy Now

Sprocket

Sprocket is another great tank game that dilutes our selection and allows you to take your mind off the constant battles. Work in the hangar in World of Tanks is one of the intermediate mechanics, while in Sprocket it is the main one — you will create your tanks from scratch, and then test them in battle.

The local editor is able to surprise even hardened fans of technology — it allows you to change absolutely everything, from the hull to the length and radius of the gun. In Sprocket, even the craziest models will have the right to life — and it’s not a fact that they will not work in battle.

Buy Now

Excluded from the selection

Tanki X

The spiritual successor to the popular Tanki Online browser — with improved graphics, more content and the presence of a game client: yes, now you need to download the game before you start online battles.

However, the client weighs a little, and the system requirements do not force you to run to the store for new components — Tanki X will easily run on any office computer. In terms of a variety of tactics, the project loses to WoT, but it will give odds in terms of emotions — the entry threshold is very low, and the gameplay is extremely simple and fun.

War Machines: Free to Play

Another guest from mobile devices, this time dedicated to the technology of the Second World War. However, authenticity ends with the technique: battles take place in locations with quite modern environments, and sparkling coins and other bonuses fall from wrecked tanks. Unrealistic, but quite dynamic and without pretensions to seriousness.

The game is closed on PC

«World of Tanks»: from online to offline — VATNIKSTAN

Earlier, VATNIKSTAN spoke about how the image of the tank in the Russian-speaking culture has evolved and what state it is in now. We also said a few words about video games, and today we fulfill our promise to write more about it.

Tank battle simulators not only took pride of place in the history of gaming platforms, but also became famous far beyond the gaming industry. Today we will talk about the great and terrible «Tanks» — World of Tanks — and why today it is not just a popular online action game, but a complex and multifaceted phenomenon of modern Russian culture.

World of Tanks logo

In search of authenticity

In 2009, AlternativaPlatform studio released the Tanki Online multiplayer game. It quickly gained popularity, however, the causality and futuristic visual style (plasma guns, turbo boosters, and so on) of the release turned out to be of interest mainly to a young audience, not particularly fond of tank topics as such.

The developers of the game focused on gameplay rather than design — as a result, the novelty turned out to be as catchy and noticeable as it was indistinct. With the same success, spaceships or long-range trucks could flash on the screens of the players — in fact, the novelty turned out to be too “ordinary”, the sophisticated user had nothing to catch on. Nevertheless, it was thanks to this release that the tank agenda was brought into the massive online field.

Soon, a project was released that fundamentally changed not only tank games, but the entire gaming market in the CIS. In the book «Playtime!» Andrey Podshibyakin characterizes the emergence of World of Tanks as follows:

“This is the first, only and absolutely unique case when a game has not only become massively successful, it has changed both the model of game consumption and the public consensus about them. «Tanks» legitimized computer games in the Russian mass consciousness instantly and, most likely, forever.

The conversation about World of Tanks is truly endless. In 2018, for the tenth anniversary of the project, the developers released a half-hour interview «Who Invented Tanks» on their channel. From it, we can learn how the idea to create a large-scale tank simulator came about.

Source: gamedeus.ru

Initially, the Wargaming.net studio was going to make an MMO in the fantasy genre: in Russia, at the turn of the 2000s and the 10s, projects in the spirit of Dota and LineAge II experienced the peak of popularity among users. But then the developers thought about a more original concept in order to stand out from the crowd: ships, combat robots and other options for the game lore were discussed. As a result, a collective decision came to the conclusion that the most win-win option is tanks. After all, interest in them is literally part of the national cultural code.

Victor Kisly, CEO Wargaming.net

As usual, the most hit ideas always seem to be the craziest. Viktor Kislyy also recalls this in a tape with a simple but understandable title «D/f about the history of Wargaming» (2013):

— A.A.) home, we sat down to have lunch. At this time, we were already experimenting with our MMO engine. Then it was elves and orcs. And he says to me: “Why do you need this? There is Warcraft, there is the LineAge (LineAge. — A.A.) … And let’s do the same, but only about tanks. Then, to be honest, I now confess, I thought: “Yes, probably the third stopar was superfluous.”

From this moment begins the story of development, which the authors of the game describe as a search for a creatively unique solution, but at the same time capable of attracting and «hooking» users. The final product had to turn out “with soul”, become intuitive and close to the inhabitants of the post-Soviet countries, within which the gaming culture has long occupied a rather marginal position in society. At the same time, the developers set themselves the task of releasing AAA projects at the technical and gameplay level (that is, the most expensive and large-scale projects on the market).

Interestingly, the promotion of the game was implemented primarily through word of mouth: the project really from the very beginning declared itself to be the most democratic, popular. «Tanks» received the most positive response even at the stage of closed and open testing, people were delighted. The game touched some deep, universal strings, causing sincere recognition and love from numerous users:

Victor Kisly: “Did we know how it (Online figures. — A.A.) would look like in the final? Well, something, of course, they knew and calculated, but what actually happened … Everything that was calculated happened, but the so-called world of mouth, or word of mouth in Russian, happened.

That is, Yura tells Dima, Dima tells his brother, his brother tells everyone else at school, and all these boys, young men, men, they all start to flock to us in such packs. Entire clans came to us from other games. This is what we did not expect in such volumes.”

Source: gamedeus.ru

The game quickly became a popular hit, and specific cultural prerequisites can be distinguished from its massive popularity. The tank firmly fit first into official art and wartime propaganda, and then into oral folklore and an array of historical memory. As a result, he became part of the basic ideas of Russians (and residents of the CIS) about history and military affairs, a universal symbol of war. To this we can add the actual primacy of the armored forces in the land army of the post-Soviet countries.

Thus, the most famous gaming project (there are servers for every major region) in the CIS appeared when a group of enthusiasts transferred the local cultural matrix to the Western online game model. «Tanks» spawned not only a wide gaming movement, but also new oral folklore, a lot of clips and songs, as well as a huge number of memes that have long gone beyond the gaming community.

Our story about Tanks can be divided into three major plots: historical and educational, socio-cultural and patriotic. Let’s go in order.

Enlightenment project

In the past, Wargaming.net has already developed games on historical and military topics: for example, back in 2008, Viktor Kisly’s team released the release «Operation Bagration». Given World of Tanks’ focus on 20th-century armored vehicles from the Second World War, as well as Cold War-era conflicts, the game had a huge educational potential from the very beginning.

If the classic MMOs and even the Tanks Online we mentioned were an abstract confrontation between «good» and «bad», then in World of Tanks the player takes control of samples of real military equipment, and «upgrading» allows you to get acquainted with its historical and design modifications. The user can independently become interested in what tank he plays, read about it on the Internet or in the encyclopedia. At the same time, Wargaming.net, having realized what layer they were raising, began to release educational materials themselves.

Source: gamedeus.ru

Of course, any content from the official publisher of the game always carries a marketing task, but it would be incorrect to reduce everything to sales alone. In more than ten years since the first release of WoT, dozens of videos about the history of tank building, famous battles and battles, and about the features of the internal structure of heavy armored vehicles have appeared on the official YouTube channel of Tanki. In 2016, on the occasion of the centenary of the first combat use of tanks in world history, a series of videos was released together with Dmitry Puchkov.

The creators offer not only the game, but also the opportunity through it to learn more about both tank topics and history in general. In the future, Wargaming.net continued this line with a publishing program: under the Tactical Press label, popular books about tank building were published, providing information about the history of weapons in an accessible format. In addition to literature on tanks, the series included materials on machine guns and transport vehicles. Unfortunately, the program is currently inactive.

Board game «World of Tanks: Rush»

By the way, «gaming education» from Wargaiming. net greatly influenced the fate of the author of these lines. “Sick” with tanks, your humble servant back in 2011, immediately after the broadcast on MTV-Russia (yes, for some reason, reviews of game releases were published there) rushed to download the game client. You are reading the results of this story right now: the author still has not lost interest in history, although he studies it mainly in the framework of political science aspects. The projects of the Wargaming.net studio played not the last, but perhaps the key role in this.

User feedback and media uptake

Such a massively popular game was bound to form a community of fans and admirers around it. In the case of «Tanks», we see an unexpected fusion of conventional «historians» and «gamers», which generated absolutely fantastic cultural reactions as a result.

It’s no secret that the first users of «Tanks» were the so-called «riveters», that is, geek enthusiasts from the world of military equipment. They came to the game for a literal reproduction of what they read about in specialized literature.

Source: gamedeus.ru

Andrey Loshak’s documentary «The World of Tanks and People» tells how a group of «riveters» independently found an industrial thickness gauge in order to prove to the developers that they incorrectly reflected the frontal projection of the IS-7 tank in the game.

The discussion thread on this issue on the official forum was blocked several times — users were so actively arguing about the realism of technical parameters. The “riveters” were subsequently followed by e-sportsmen, who opened the way for the “Tanks” to the leagues of professional game competitions.

It’s amazing how many people see Tanks as a turning point in their lives. This is exactly what the tape mentioned above tells about. In the «World of Tanks and Humans» tape, the authors talked to those for whom the game helped them find a professional job or became a great hobby. For some of the heroes of the documentary, she even turned out to be a saving source of new acquaintances and loyal friends in a difficult life situation.

World of Tanks has grown rapidly not only in the community, but also in media activity. One of the most high-profile and large-scale collaborations of Wargaming.net is a partnership with Sabaton, whose music, dedicated mainly to military history, seemed to be specially created for the game.

In 2017, Wargaming.net financed the video for the song «Primo Victoria», which is considered a classic of the group’s work, and the tank of the same name appeared in the game, the crew of which was Sabaton members. Already in 2021, the performers wrote and, together with Wargaming.net, released the song «Steel commanders», dedicated to the history of tank building. In a video from the official YouTube channel World of Tanks, the artists stated that the collaboration with the company of Viktor Kisly has become a very important stage for their creative path, and they do not plan to stop.

However, Wargaiming.net’s marketing strategies were not always successful. In 2015, the company decided to release ads aimed entirely at older players. According to the plot of the video «Advertising World of Tanks 18+», a middle-aged man played by Vadim Galygin locked his child in a closet, boarding up the doors with boards. And then he sat down to play «Tanks», loudly shouting into the microphone unpleasant epithets addressed to the enemy team. The experiment turned out to be extremely unsuccessful, and the video was quickly removed from all official resources. But the Internet remembers everything, and the old-timers of the community still remember this uncomfortable moment.

It should be noted that everyone makes marketing mistakes, and Wargaming. net eventually admitted that such an approach to the players turned out to be inappropriate. First of all, many were offended by the far from intelligent image of the player. The developers were accused of perceiving their audience as narrow-minded and ill-mannered people, and the “joke” from the video did not seem funny to the audience at all. But this is also part of the story and the impact that the game had on society. Indeed, in the mass consciousness, «tankers» have already taken shape as an independent object for jokes and memes — by the way, not always positive, but firmly entrenched in the cultural environment.

Patriotism and the game industry: on the way to an alliance

Finally, let’s talk about the direction that can be described as patriotic, meaning specific actions to preserve historical memory. At one time, it was for this reason that the release of the game, released by Belarusian developers, was supported by the Ministry of Defense of Belarus. In 2016, as part of a partnership with the Central Museum of the Armed Forces in Moscow, Wargaiming.net organized its own interactive center, and opened a computer class in the Prokhorovskoye Pole Museum-Reserve in the Belgorod Region. In addition, since 2013, the company has been supervising an educational project at the Bovington Tank Museum (England).

Wargaming.net regularly spends funds to support search teams and enthusiasts who restore military equipment, and provides all possible assistance with the maintenance of these works. With the money of the company, operations were carried out to raise wartime tanks from the bottom of lakes and swamps.

All of this was made possible by the commercial success of the game. In this regard, «Tanks» become a universal platform for the CIS, since the memory of the Great Patriotic War, around which the patriotic projects of developers are concentrated, is still common among the inhabitants of the post-Soviet countries.

It is also interesting that patriotic moments pass through World of Tanks into modern youth politics. In particular, the «Russian movement of schoolchildren» uses «Tanks» as one of the disciplines for cybersport championships. This game seems to be the most suitable for «patriotic education»: being an original product of developers from the CIS, it is also focused on historical and military heritage. In a sense, the Wargaming.net project is turning into a special form of preserving historical memory, only in an interactive format.

«Tank agenda» as the key to all doors

Today «Tanks» is not just a game or a product. This is a large-scale cultural, economic, social and even political phenomenon. Over the ten years of its development, World of Tanks has brought tank culture to the mainstream, turning the discussion of the intricacies of the design of heavy armored vehicles from the lot of historical geeks into the mass agenda. This is a game that appeared in the CIS, it is here that it gained the most popularity and has already become part of the local «cultural code», «our game», «taking off» on the people’s love for the tank as a unifying symbol.

This thesis is confirmed by the development model of another online action game about military equipment, War Thunder from Gaijin Entertainment. The company was founded in 2002 in Moscow, so the appeal to military topics is not surprising. War Thunder started not with tanks, but with aircraft. And even though it offered a more detailed and realistic gaming experience in controlling vehicles compared to the parallel World of Warplanes from Wargaming.net (which remained more arcade and conditional), the game did not gain much popularity at that time. But the introduction of tank branches into War Thunder breathed a second wind into the project, apparently for the same reasons as for Tanks.

Due to Gaijin Entertainment’s focus on realism, scandals have been played out in recent years.
