Hot dog.

‘Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (2015)’ is an expandalone title that takes place prior to the events of ‘Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014)’. It’s debatable as to whether this is actually cannon or just a sort of alternate history, as it has a distinctly tongue-in-cheek tone and doesn’t quite mesh with the series’ overall world. In either case, the game is really entertaining. It’s an even purer distillation of the fast-paced shooting that made the prior title so engaging, focusing more on its mechanics than on its story. The result is a short but sweet experience that feels more arcade-like than the main entries in the franchise, a feeling which is bolstered by the piece’s high-score chasing ‘arcade mode’. The story isn’t bad, by any means. It’s an extra schlocky, typically satirical take on a couple of old genre tropes and it’s enjoyable throughout. It has a distinct, two-half structure and a variety of unique locations. As such, it easily carries you through to the end of the game. In the end, this is a great little addition to the franchise that may just be the most purely fun entry in it. 8/10

from Castle Wolfenstein to The New Colossus — Gambling

The Wolfenstein series has a rich history, has almost a dozen projects — from the first two-dimensional action games to modern furious shooters with great graphics — and is considered one of the longest-lived. Soon another part of the famous franchise will be released — Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus . So we decided to refresh the history of the series, starting from the very beginning.

Castle Wolfenstein (1981)

The first game in the series, developed by Muse Software , was released in 1981 and was the first draft of the stealth action genre. The game is completely made in 2D and tells about the adventures of a nameless spy in the walls of the Wolfenstein castle somewhere in the German rear. The hero needs to steal secret documents and get out of the castle alive.

The character had only a ten-shot pistol and grenades, and with their help he had to overcome level after level. The beauty is that the game could be played both quietly, without killing anyone, or openly, destroying all enemies on the way. Which path to choose, the player decided, which undoubtedly benefited the gameplay. nine0007

This is how Wolfenstein started.

Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (1984)

The second part became a direct continuation of the original, and here we, as the same nameless saboteur, need to perform a much more important task than stealing documents: get into the Fuhrer’s bunker and plant a bomb near the office where he holds a meeting with the high command.

The gameplay has not changed much since the first part, but the new game had more space for the stealth component: a knife was added to the standard pistol for a dozen rounds, allowing you to silently kill opponents, as well as food, clothes and other goodies — they can be found in cabinets and behind the doors of the pantries that replaced the notorious boxes. nine0007

Surprise!

There was no need to rush to kill everyone here, because a system of passes appeared, thanks to which it was possible to pass a dangerous area without noise. Stopped us, then, the enemy soldier — we slipped him a pass. If everything went well, he yelled encouragingly «Heil!» , which meant «the way is clear». And when something did not suit the guard, he either attacked us or sounded the alarm, to which reinforcements came running, and in such cases the good old firearms came to the rescue. If we did everything right, as a result, the bunker took off into the air. nine0007

Wolfenstein 3D (1992)

It’s 1992. Studio id Software bought the rights to the Wolfenstein series from Muse Software, associating itself with it for a long time, and in May of that year released Wolfenstein 3D , the first-person shooter and progenitor of this genre. To say that the game made a splash is an understatement.

It was in this part that the hero who became the face of the series appeared — William «BJ» Blaskowitz, who once again (well, let’s take the word for it) is trying to overthrow the Nazi regime. There is almost nothing left of the former spirit of stealth action: now we simply break through hordes of opponents, whether they are simple SS soldiers with MP-40s in their hands or monsters shooting at us from weapons of a downright futuristic look. The main task, as in the original, was to get out of the same Wolfenstein castle, once again chosen by the Nazis as the site of almost all secret projects. nine0007

Beautiful semi-3D world.

This «mechanical» Hitler is very tenacious!

The game has noticeably grown both in terms of graphics and levels. The player was placed in a semi-three-dimensional world, consisting of six episodes of nine missions, in which, among other things, there were a huge number of secrets: you had to carefully look for entrances to secret rooms. Some contained useful items — first-aid kits, gold, weapons — and some were references and Easter eggs (for example, one of these secret doors leads to a level that almost copies the game Pac-Man ). But the most tasty «piece» of the game was not the secret levels at all, but the opportunity at the end to personally kill Adolf Hitler, dressed in mechanical armor.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001)

Less than a decade has passed, and id Software once again decided to please the fans and release Return To Castle Wolfenstein , which added even more charm to Wolfenstein and gave what the franchise lacked so much: at least some any logical plot and the long-awaited full 3D. nine0007

For that time the graphics were on top.

1943 Allied intelligence learns that the Nazis are developing weapons designed to change the course of the war, and throws a detachment of two saboteurs into German territory with the agent Blaskowitz, already beloved by everyone, who is assigned to stop the madness of General Wilhelm Strasse, nicknamed Totenkopf (well, or General Cherep, who cares more familiar), with which the protagonist will have a very complex and long «relationship». General Skull is a genius scientist and the leading mind of the SS Secret Projects Department. As befits a villain, he builds his intrigues to the world, creating unknown things. nine0007

One of General Skull’s creations.

Of course, the saboteurs were captured and sent to the Wolfenstein castle (hello again!), and Blaskowitz, faithful to his duty, goes through fire, water and copper pipes, since the concept of the game has not changed at all. He fights with a huge number of Nazis, destroys all kinds of undead, tears the skull’s uber-soldiers apart, stops the paranormal SS division, and at the very end destroys Henry I, burying the plans of the Third Reich to conquer the world with him. nine0007

Wolfenstein (2009)

The sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein received mixed reviews from players. It is understandable: to dilute the honed formula with completely new chips is a rather risky step.

It takes place in the German city of Eisenstadt, where strange things begin to happen, and our «friendly» agent Blaskowitz is thrown there again. In the course of the passage, it becomes clear that the Nazis, led by the same General Skull, who did not forget the past humiliating defeat, decided to mix in a considerable amount of magic and mysticism to ordinary science. Outcome? nine0007

Firstly, a whole horde of various opponents: Wehrmacht soldiers, scribe magicians, monsters crawling out of portals, and other no less dangerous comrades. Secondly, an arsenal of impressive weapons: magical Thulian medallions, impenetrable energy shields — damn it, one could only dream of such a thing, because thanks to such “toys” enemies can be burned, electrocuted, evaporated (literally), dismembered and made other mischief!

Actually General Wilhelm Strasse, aka General Cherep, aka Totenkopf. nine0007

…and the product of his mischief with the world of the Black Sun.

The game was slow from the very beginning: in addition to the sluggishly developing campaign, a number of side tasks appeared, and if we got tired of breaking into secret laboratories, we could, for example, break into the house of a high-ranking officer and steal the Enigma cipher book in order to get a Kreysau mug and Caroline Becker (they also play an important role here) found it easier to decipher enemy communications. The information content of the universe has also increased — in the course of the plot, you can read and listen to a bunch of orders, notes, excerpts from scientific reports and other documents that little by little revealed to us the meaning of what is happening on the screen. nine0007

Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014)

July 16, 1946. Dawn. Everyone is in a complete ass … ”- with these words, BJ’s next campaign against the Nazi regime began.

1946 The Third Reich has made a technological leap decades ahead and is now winning on all fronts. Our task is to stop the activity of an old friend, who in some unknown way survived the crash of the zeppelin, General Wilhelm Strasse.

However, it is not possible to stop the villain during the assault on his fortress, the main character receives a head injury and falls into a vegetative state for fourteen years, and the war ends with the unconditional victory of Germany, which also subdued its former allies. Waking up at 19In the year 60, in a dystopian world, the hero organizes the fight against the Nazi regime, ruling the world with an iron fist.

Assault on Skull Fortress. 1946

This is exactly the depressing story that Wolfenstein: The New Order tells us. The Swedish studio MachineGames was not afraid to change the series and show us their vision of an alternative history. The game has its own charm: «familiar unfamiliar» post-war years are simply amazing.

There are a huge number of newspaper clippings that showed how the Nazis won the war, and the famous Liverpool Four, now singing in German, and the monumental buildings of Albert Speer in Berlin, brought to life by German engineers, and much more. Even Jimi Hendrix rocking in the Kreisau hideout in the catacombs of Berlin looks like it should have been from the start (yes, that black guy with the guitar is Jimi Hendrix). nine0007

Don’t be afraid, he doesn’t bite!

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (2015)

In the wake of The New Order’s popularity, MachineGames studio got back to work and a year later released an add-on the size of a full-fledged game — Wolfenstein: The Old Blood , which became a prequel to the last part.

Here, after a long absence, the famous castle in the Austrian Alps finally lit up. The game, as if returning to its roots, almost word for word repeats the plot of Return To Castle Wolfenstein: the same castle, Agent-1, who dies during torture, escape from the castle … and again, forgetting about common sense, we are immersed in atmosphere of magic, along the way demanding to find documents with the coordinates of the headquarters of General Skull (the very headquarters that we will storm at the beginning of The New Order). nine0007

Good old Wolfenstein in a completely new cover turned out to be a breath of fresh air, but did not surpass the previous part. The game could only be criticized for the frankly weak plot and the orgy that happens towards the end, because sometimes it seemed that the whole game was just a prologue to the chic final cut-scene.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus (2017)

The ending of The New Order left a very bitter aftertaste in my soul, but common sense prevailed. nine0027 «Such an important hero can’t die just like that, well, he can’t!» — we repeated to ourselves. And they turned out to be right: the new part of the series, called Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, with its first major teaser from E3, told that BJ Blaskowitz, whom we adore, survived, but, unfortunately, they did not show instructions for surviving after an atomic explosion.

So let’s briefly describe what we know at the moment. Events unfold after the destruction of the Skull Fortress by an atomic bomb from the Hammer of Eve. The hero comes to his senses in the US, occupied by the evil Nazis, where he and the remnants of the Kreisau are going to arrange a second American revolution. However, close behind them is Frau Engel, with whom we also have not had the best relations since the destruction of the camp in Belitsa. Blaskowitz’s lover, Anya Oliva, is pregnant with twins (according to Seth Roth), and the hero himself, dressed in a technological suit, crushes the Nazis again to bring freedom to America, and then to the whole world. nine0007

In addition to another story about the resistance, we are waiting for some innovations in the gameplay. The commercials featured so far unknown models of weapons capable of melting walls and vaporizing people. In addition, it is known that we will visit the famous New York nuclear funnel and New Orleans, and we will also be able to ride a panzerhund and use it to kill the hated Nazis.

No matter what anyone says, but Wolfenstein will live for a very, very long time. This is confirmed by the successful resuscitation of the series by the MachineGames studio and the imminent release of a new part of the adventures of everyone’s favorite BJ. Let’s hope that The New Colossus does not lose face. We are looking forward to the release! nine0007

review Wolfenstein (2009) / Computer and mobile games / iXBT Live

Today, all shooter fans know about Wolfenstein: The New Order, developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda. Upon release, the game received a lot of accolades from players and the press. The New Order is noticeably different from the previous parts. If in the same Return to Castle Wolfenstein the emphasis is on the occult and mysticism, and the action time is the 1940s, then Wolfenstein: The New Order focuses on fantasy, and the action time is 19The 60s, in which the world is ruled by the Nazis. Also, unlike the previous parts, New Order emphasized the plot and the personal drama of the protagonist. Most players liked the game, but there were also those who were unhappy with the change in course in the series. Later, The Old Blood DLC was released for New Order. It was a prequel, which in its spirit was close to the old parts of the series.

A sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Colossus was released in 2017. The game was also warmly received by the press and players. However, some did not like the mood of the story in the new part. If The New Order was a drama, then The New Colosuss had a lot of comedic moments. After the release of The New Colossus, timid voices of oldfags began to appear, saying that it was better before. And when they said «before», they didn’t mean The New Order. nine0007

Wolfenstein: Youngblood was released in 2019. Unlike the previous parts of the series, it was a cooperative shooter. Instead of the unchanging BJ, we had to play as his daughters. Youngblood was not warmly received by the players. Disregard for the universe like a submachine gun that was one-on-one copied from the Israeli «UZI» is the least of the problems. By that point, Bethesda had begun to evolve into what it is in 2020. And this time the voices of the oldfags became even louder. nine0007

What are the olds talking about? About what used to be better. What exactly was better? This is what I am going to analyze using the example of the last «old» part of Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein 2009.

Wolfensten (2009) was developed by Raven Software on the Id Tech 4 engine. The game was published by Activision. How is this game different? Unlike the MachineGames series, here, as in Return to castle Wolfenstein, there is no emphasis on Blazkowicz’s personal drama. Yes Yes. Once upon a time, everyone called BJ Blazhkovich. In addition, this part has been completely translated into Russian, you can hear many familiar voices. For example, the well-known Vsevolod Kuznetsov voiced almost half of the Nazis in this game. There is also an emphasis on the occult. nine0007

What should BJ be like?

What can you say about the plot? It’s in the spirit of Wolfenstein. The protagonist is Agent Blazhkovich, who doesn’t dig, doesn’t suffer, and doesn’t dream about how he will relax in the backyard of his house. He also has no maniac tendencies. Here you will not see BJ who wants to dismember a Nazi with a chainsaw. BJ here is just a fighter on a mission.

You might say, “Why do we need such a hero? MachineGames Balskovitz added depth and drama, and here? Brick-faced like Vito Scaletta!” Perhaps you `re right. Ubisoft and IO Interactive thought so too and decided to add some drama to their games. In Splinter Cell, we from Agent Fisher, who does his job, first got Stirlitz in Double Agent, and then Jason Bourne in Conviction. The public did not approve, since the same Conviction did not care about all the features of the previous parts and turned from stealth into action. And then came Blacklist, which tried to please everyone. A cooperative was brought from Conviction. Added the variability of passing, customization and the Base, which can be equipped … Sam Fisher again serves the country, fights terrorists and communicates a little with his daughter. nine0007

Spoiler for the game.

Well, a happy ending that doesn’t end as dramatic as in Double Agent and Conviction.

IO Interactive also tried drama. In Hitman: Blood Money, we slightly, I emphasize, slightly touched on the inner experiences of the protagonist. And in general, everything was cool. The versatility that the Hitman series cherishes hasn’t gone away, and the story is fun to watch. And then came Hitman Absolution, which the players took with hostility. Instead of large levels, we got corridors with forks. An “instinct” appeared, more like a legal cheat, without which, for example, it was impossible to disguise normally: if you use disguise, then NPCs in the same clothes will start to recognize you, and in order not to reveal you, you must use this very “instinct «. Agent 47, like Sam Fisher, turned into Jason Bourne, only instead of a government organization, the Agency, for which he had worked for many years, began to hunt for 47. Hitman later returned to its roots with Hitman (2015) and its sequel, which were warmly received by players. nine0007

What about BJ? Players accepted this transformation of the character favorably. When criticizing Hitman Absolution and Splinter Cell Conviction, do not forget to take a ride through the plot. According to the plot of Wolfenstein The New Order, they did not drive through, as the game came out good. So what should be BJ? I will say tritely, let everyone decide for himself what he should be. Although it’s more accurate who he should be: Blazhkovich or Blaskowitz 🙂 If you like a hero who unshakably endures enemy armies, hordes of evil spirits and at the same time does not blink an eye, and fans will build theories about him that he is the ancestor of Dumgai, then your choice is Blazhkovich . nine0007

If you like a hero who has inner feelings, who overcomes difficulties, and you believe that this hero can die, then Blaskowitz is your choice.

But if you ask me, I prefer the old BJ. BJ during RTCW and Wolfenstein 2009.

About the game

On the German battleship Tirpitz, BJ finds a Thule medallion: an artifact belonging to some ancient Thulian civilization. The Office of Secret Operations (USO) sends agent Blazhkovich to the German city of Eisenstadt (not to be confused with the real Austrian city.) in order to find out who and how got the Thule medallion. nine0007

This part, like other games in the Wolfenstein series, is a first-person shooter. This game has a semi-open world. This is both a plus and a minus of the game. On the one hand, it is possible to explore different areas of the city, on the other hand, for the most part, the player will stumble upon Nazi patrols and shootouts with local resistance. However, in my subjective opinion, fights with local opponents are much more interesting than in The New Order.

First, the variety of enemies. Present here: simple Wehrmacht soldiers with MP-40s, fighters with kar9 rifles8, SS soldiers with StG 44, women in latex who quickly close the distance and deal damage in close combat, soldiers in heavy armor with photon cannons, which can be killed in two ways (exploded from a panzerschreck or by destroying 3 . .. let’s say, power supply. The last one appears after the destruction of the previous two), sorcerers who can put protection on whoever the player shoots at, flying soldiers firing grenade launchers, stealth assassins who can move quickly and attack from the back, there are also opponents from the Black Sun dimension who appear only when the medallion is activated. nine0007

Secondly, the Thule medallion adds variety to the passage. It has 4 modes and usage time. The first mode simply activates the medallion and transports the player to the world of the Black Sun.

Black Sun Dimension

It moves the player faster, highlights enemy weak spots and secret passages that are closed in the overworld, and lasts longer than other modes. The second mode allows you to slow down time, but spends the energy of the medallion. The third mode creates a shield around the player. The fourth mode enhances the player’s damage and allows you to shoot through enemy shields. Also in the game, in addition to the standard red exploding barrels, there are barrels that replenish the energy of the medallion, and when they explode, they make everything and everyone within the radius of destruction levitate for a short time. nine0007

The bosses here are unique and quite interesting to fight. In addition to all this, the game has weapon customization. Any weapon available to the player can be upgraded.

About cons. The game has a huge amount of cut content. Enemies, weapons and so on. Many people can get bored running from district to district. Some people get bored with shooting.

Conclusion

There is little I can say bad about Wolfenstein (2009). He left me with only positive emotions. At high difficulty levels, there are some moments that are simply unrealistic to pass, but in general, this is a very good game. And so you think, “Wow! If it’s that good, then I’ll go and buy it!” — then you will have a problem. You can’t buy this game on Steam or on PS3 or XboX 360 stores. She’s just not there. In 2014 Wolfenstein (2009) was removed from Steam, PS Store and XboX Live for some reason. Officially, you can’t buy it anywhere.

Unfortunately, the game was not successful. After ZeniMax acquired Id Software, the Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake brands were taken over by Bethesda, a subsidiary of ZeniMax. Id Software released Doom 2016, MachineGames released Wolfenstein The New Order. What about Raven Software? They had a much sadder fate. Raven Software began helping the Activision studios responsible for the Call of Duty series. The studio that once released Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and Quake 4 has begun finishing Call of Duty for Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer games. However, in 2016, Raven Software released Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered, and in 2020, the successful Call of Duty Warzone. I would like to believe that Raven Software will get out of the shadow of other studios and make their own full-fledged game.
