Introduction
Remember BJ Blazkowicz? Of course you do. Having made his first appearance way back in 1992 in Wolfenstein 3D, the original first-person shooter, Blazkowicz has been a largely dormant character since that game’s release, with the exception of the «Return to Castle Wolfenstein» games released nearly a decade later. But now, our good friend, the American spy, is back. Ready to take on the Nazi regime once more in an alternate history storyline, Wolfenstein (the third game in the base Wolfenstein series) is as heated a first-person shooter as you’ll find on the market today.
Blazkowicz’s fight takes place in an alternate history storyline, but that doesn’t mean there’s some semblance of truth to what’s going on. The SS Paranormal Division is back in full force, and conducting crazy experiments to give the Axis the edge in World War II. Think the SS Paranormal Division is fictional? Think again. Based on the very real SS Ahnenerbe, the Paranormal Division in Wolfenstein is after the occult knowledge hidden by something called The Black Sun. And while the SS Ahnenerbe was never quite this out of control during World War II, rest assured that the Nazis’ fascination and obsession with archaeology, the paranormal, the occult, and ancient history is quite, quite real, indeed.
Wolfenstein is the biggest game in the small series yet, by far. With over a dozen missions, there’s plenty to do during the main course of events. And that doesn’t even take into account the hundreds of collectibles to be found throughout the game’s various maps, from gold, to intel, to special occult-based items called Tomes of Power. There is also an entire arsenal of weapons to uncover and upgrade, and a vast multiplayer element to the game that will certainly require your full attention as well. Naturally, our guide covers all of this, and more, to ensure that you take down the Nazi regime once and for all in this unique take on World War II shooters.
Are you ready, soldier? The German Resistance awaits your arrival.
In this Wolfenstein strategy guide, you’ll find:
- BASICS // Because to take on the Nazis, you have to know the fundamentals first.
- WALKTHROUGH // Each mission covered to help you bring down the Nazis’ occult ambitions.
- ARSENAL // All of the game’s weapons thoroughly covered. Upgrade information included.
- COLLECTIBLES // Locations for each and every piece of gold, intel folder, and Tome of Power.
- Q&A // Your questions, our answers.

Give us feedback! | On to Basics… |
Wolfenstein — Gambling
Wolfenstein came out in 1992
3D — almost the first three-dimensional shooter on personal computers.
The game was controlled exclusively from the keyboard, the role of the Nazis was played by unpretentious
sprites that, when approached, turned into a set of huge pixels, and
the sounds of weapons were portrayed by a built-in speaker, whose squeak could piss you off abruptly
any electric drill. But in those days it was a real breakthrough, a triumph
computer technologies. Is it a joke — a three-dimensional game, with a view from the eyes of the main
hero, in which you can move in all four directions, bypass enemies
from the side and aim at them with real weapons!
Another nice feature
of this game became clear many years later — they began to regularly release
very good remakes. In 2001, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was released, and
now the Wolfenstein action by Raven Software is on sale,
which, of course, lacks the stars from the sky, but is pleasant in every sense
game.
World War II. Austrian
the town of Eisenstadt is occupied by the Nazis. Nevertheless, somewhere in its back streets
hide and partisan groups, and illegal traders, and our hero —
dashing special agent BJ Blazhkovich, a real thunderstorm of the Nazis.
At first the game is really
looks like a very old school shooter — linear, corridor and enough
simple. However, it soon becomes clear that Wolfenstein are no strangers and
the latest fashion finds in the action genre.
First we have to
to find out that Eisenstadt, by the efforts of the developers, has turned into, albeit small,
but a truly open world. AT
Wolfenstein modeled several areas of the town, which can be completely
roam freely, «risking» to run into some character who is ready
drop a quest. Around the perimeter of this reservation are scattered exits to separate
levels where most of the events of the story unfold.
Found in the streets
Eisenstadt is also a place for real trade. We find gold, convert it
in the currency that we spend on upgrades for weapons. For the coolest twists
it is not enough just to have a large amount of money — first you need to find
secret data.
Wolfenstein gameplay short
pretends to be an ordinary «shooter about the Second World War» — very soon Blazhkovich
steals the crystal of the Black Sun right from under the noses of the Nazis, which gives
its owner of unprecedented abilities. The most important is the opportunity
transition to Shadow. This is the other world, once in which the hero remains visible
to others, but starts moving twice as fast and can pass through
some walls. In addition, Teni is easier to navigate — the landscape is excellent.
visible even late at night, and the enemies are also carefully highlighted.
Over time, Blazkowicz will find
three more crystals and learn to slow down time, create a protective field and
shoot through walls. Some small upgrades can also be purchased on
black market.
In general, due to the possibility
use the Shadow, playing Wolfenstein is simple but… beautiful. This is not the shooter
which constantly challenges the player, but you can get the sea in it
pleasure from beautiful and spectacular fights.
Here are some graphics
let us down. The aged engine from Doom 3, of course, was patched up, but not a miracle
happened — the picture looks mediocre. But the designers tried —
levels are worked out in detail and completely different from each other.
Wolfenstein is a very enjoyable game. And she won’t like it
only to those who were lucky enough to play «Wolf 3D» live, but also just
lovers of high-quality action games — the project, although it does not pretend to be any
revolution, but very good.
- Interesting non-linear plot
- Smartly woven into the game
supernatural powers
- Obsolete graphics
- Someone can play
seem too simple
Why is Raven Software so amazing? What upgrades are there for weapons? Who does Blazkowicz look like after he finds the crystal? THESE AND MANY OTHER QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED BY THE DETAILED REVIEW OF WOLFENSTEIN IN GAMING No. 10/2009 AND GAMING LIGHT No. 9/2009. |

Description
Game developed by Raven Software in association with id Software and published by Activision. Is a continuation of Return to Castle Wolfenstein . Development went from 2004 to 2009. The game was released on 18 (21 Russia) August 2009 on PC, PlayStation 3 platforms.
Gameplay
Playing as agent Blazkowicz, the player will have to fight against SS soldiers, otherworldly creatures and monsters created by Nazi scientists to enslave the world. The player can also use the medallion to travel to a parallel dimension where there are no shadows and where everything has a greenish-bluish tint. You will have to explore it, and together with your allies, destroy the Nazi war machine. The game has both conventional weapons, such as the MP-40 and MP-43 submachine gun (StG 44), as well as «supernatural» ones, such as the mighty Leichenfaust or the Tesla cannon. Wolfenstein provides a varied assortment of missions linked together. The medallion, in addition to the possibility of switching to a parallel dimension, also acquires new properties as the game progresses: time dilation, an energy «shield» that reflects enemy shots, and an «amplification» that increases the strength of your shots by several times.
Also, caches of gold are scattered all over the world, for which you can then improve weapons.
Multiplayer
Wolfenstein has multiplayer divided into 3 classes: Soldier, Engineer and Medic. The soldier can throw explosives with a remote fuse, use heavy weapons and «shadow strike», similar in principle to a grenade. The Medic can heal and revive other soldiers. The Engineer can run fast, mine/clear buildings, build structures, and dispense ammo.
Plot
The plot of the game Wolfenstein is based on the myths of Nazi occultism in a cryptohistorical fantasy universe: the game takes place during World War II in the city of Eisenstadt, where magic and mysterious artifacts of ancient mythical civilizations are present.
According to the plot of the game, BJ Blazkowicz, an American OSA agent, the constant protagonist and protagonist of all games in the Wolfenstein series, carries out sabotage on the Nazi battleship Tirpitz, who intended to launch strategic missiles on London. On the battleship, BJ used a mysterious magical Thulian medallion, a magical artifact that briefly created a force field around Blazkowicz. After destroying Tirpitz, Blazhkovich returned to the OSA base, but immediately after that he went on his next mission to Eisenstadt. It is from the arrival by train in Eisenstadt that the gameplay begins directly.
Eric Engle and the Kreisau Circle blow up the train of the special operations department, after which Blazhkovich hides from the station and meets with Karolina Becker, the head of the Kreisau Circle. Blazhkovich will have to go to excavations outside the city and find a Thule medallion. This is where the adventures of Blazhkovich and the experiments of the Nazis on the world of the Black Sun begin.
The plot of the game echoes the plot of other games in the series. So, Wolfenstein’s final boss, Hans Grosse, is also the first boss in Wolfenstein 3D. Also in the game is General Wilhelm Strasse, also known as « Death’s Head «, known from the game Return to Castle Wolfenstein as the developer of the Super Soldiers. Past events — the disruption of Operation Rebirth and the Super Soldier program — are mentioned in several memos in missions, warning of the protagonist’s special danger. Also, the appearance of heavy infantry is a bit like the armor of the Super-Soldiers.

The game has both main missions, the passage of which is mandatory, and additional ones — for example, save members of your group or infiltrate the headquarters of the SS.

Gameplay Features
The amount of remaining health is no longer displayed. Instead, with a sufficiently severe wound, the screen from the sides twitches with a bloody veil.
Both allies and enemies are very talkative, and you can learn a lot of additional information from them. Allies can also issue additional mini-missions — releasing agents, destroying radio towers, etc.
The killing of opponents is designed as realistic as possible: they wheeze, bleed, fly, fall and lose limbs from explosions. To prevent the game from being too bloody, the disappearance of corpses over time has been introduced.
Weapons, ammunition, trophy gold and sources of information (boards, safes, cabinets, desks) shimmer with light and are visible from afar, but sometimes located in such a way that it is impossible to notice them the first time (gold after the end of the mission to rescue agents from headquarters SS, gold in the fountain in front of the hospital and much more).
After completing the next task in the city, a detachment of enemies is randomly created on the street closest to the destination, by the end of which they will become more diverse and stronger. So, in the business center on the bridge over the gutter, you can meet either a crowd of soldiers behind power shields and elite guards, or a detachment of machine gunners led by a heavy infantryman, or a detachment of soldiers accompanied by a scribe.
The number of Thulian medallion upgrades is determined by the number of Tomes of Power found in the city and on missions. The maximum number of tomes needed is 16, you can get a little more on tasks — some are very well hidden.
Development
The game was first announced in 2004 during an interview with Todd Hollenshead on TechTV.
On March 16, 2009, dozens of screenshots of the game leaked to the Internet, but Activision did not confirm their authenticity.
On March 21, 2009, the first game video for the game was released, which showed the gameplay.
Interesting facts
- The name of the operation «Nakhtzonne», which is carried out by the Nazis in the game, is translated as «Night Sun».
- After beating the game for the first time, reward codes become available.
- There is an easter egg in the SS Headquarters mission. In the interrogation room, a board with photographs depicts the game’s designer, Manveer Hair, in Wehrmacht uniform.
- Even after the death of all comrades, a lone enemy will continue to «warn» about attacks and thrown grenades.
- During the passage you can meet Jewish and Slavic symbols.
- Hans Grosse is the last boss in Wolfenstein, but also the first in Wolfenstein 3D.
- In the Excavation level, you can find a note from General Zetta to Dr. Blavatsky, the Return to Castle Wolfenstein character.
- The tomes found in the game Wolfenstein are very similar to the artifact found in the game Heretic. In Heretic, this artifact called «Tyketto’s Tome of Power» enhances the weapon while giving it additional properties, while in Wolfenstein they unlock upgrades for the Shadow Medallion.
- Infernals in the game resemble the main character from the movie: «Ghost Rider». Just like him, infernals glow with fire and look like a lich.
- Some enemies ignore body anatomy damage (i.e. they can’t rip off an arm, leg or head), while other enemies in this game (except bosses of course) are dismembered.
