Wolfenstein 3 news: Wolfenstein 3 Possibly in the Works

Wolfenstein 3 Could Be Coming Sooner Than You Think

MachineGames could finally be ready to «Blazkowicz» its way back into our lives, as a mysterious job listing hints that Wolfenstein 3 might be just around the corner.

While many associate Doom with the birth of the first-person shooter, that honour actually goes to 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D. There have been some middling entries over the years, however, MachineGames took the reins and delivered a soft reboot with 2014 Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Critics loved the change in style that put the story ahead of action, and when the studio gave us The New Colossus in 2017, it was an even bigger return to form. We’ve had other Wolfenstein games since, but for those wanting a proper trilogy for B.J. Blazkowicz, you’re in luck.

We know that MachineGames is working on the hyped Indiana Jones game, but beyond that, a post on LinkedIn hints that Wolfenstein 3 will be next on the docket.

Former employee Melissa Petrucci says that she’s just finished her time at Machine Games, having worked on Indiana Jones and an «unannounced project.» As well as implying Dr. Jones is up next, it’s left the door open to speculation about what the mystery game is.

Considering MachineGames isn’t really known for anything other than Wolfenstein, we’d be surprised if we weren’t returning to the IP. If this isn’t Wolfenstein, we’d have to wait even longer for a third game, meaning it could be well over a decade since we last visited the mainline story of B.J.

Responding to the idea of Wolfenstein 3, one fan cheered, «Plz be Wolfenstein, they need to give an end to that story,» while another added, «My bones can sense it’s Wolfenstein 3. «

Not everyone was convinced though, as someone else concluded, «I would guess that this other project is a collaboration with another studio, maybe like ID software or maybe a smaller game. Don’t see it being something like Wolfenstein 3.»

Wolfenstein 3 Can Put The Franchise Back On Top

There have been two middling Wolfenstein games since the credits rolled on The New Colossus, with 2019’s co-operative Youngblood picking up with B.J.’s daughters 20 years later. We also had the disappointing Cyberpilot from Arkane Lyon, so it’s about time we had a solid outing.

Back in 2018, Bethesda’s Head of PR Pete Hines promised a third game was on the way, but that was before Microsoft bought ZeniMax media and pulled MachineGames under the Xbox exclusivity umbrella. He’s since said, «You can put me at the head of the list of people who want to see another Wolfenstein game.»

We covered how a job listing teased Wolfenstein 3 back in 2021, but so far, there’s been no official reveal. There have been a lot of Bethesda announcements, and yet, still no Wolfenstein 3. With Microsoft once again skipping out on E3, the June Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase could be one to watch.

Wolfenstein 3 Could Be More Difficult To Make Thanks To Wolfenstein Youngblood

By
Richard Warren

While Wolfenstein 3 absolutely deserves to happen, Wolfenstein: Youngblood ensures it will have one massive challenge to overcome if it does.

MachineGames’ revival of the Wolfenstein franchise led to some of the best FPS games of the PS4 and Xbox One generation. Strong gameplay focused on arcade-like combat combined with a memorable story, and BJ Blazkowicz’ inner dialogue made him a likable protagonist that players loved controlling. After Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, though, something new was attempted with the series.

Wolfenstein Youngblood was an interesting game, as it delivered a co-op spin on the series and shifted the focus of the story, letting players take control of BJ and Anya’s daughters. While it had its strengths, many cited its story as lacking in comparison to the more linear and narrative-focused singleplayer titles. Further, though it may have been a decent enough game, Wolfenstein Youngblood could end up having a negative impact on Wolfenstein 3 because of a few major moments.

The narrative for Wolfenstein Youngblood saw the Blazkowicz sisters searching for their father, eventually uncovering his location and reuniting with him. He ultimately survives the events of the game, revealing that he killed Hitler and activated a doomsday device that will eventually ruin the earth. While he searched for a solution, he stumbled upon alternate dimensions, setting up a potential plot point for a future game. Alongside his daughters, he helped defeat the villain Lothar, inspiring a new resistance to fight the Nazi party.

By jumping forward in time and ensuring that BJ is still very involved in his daughters’ life, MachineGames has been written into a bit of a corner. If it wants to feature BJ Blazkowicz vs. Hitler, fans will already know the outcome, having no concerns about BJ possibly dying during this mission. Wolfenstein 2 played with BJ’s potential death in a really fun way, delivering a shocking moment where fans had no idea what would happen next. Wolfenstein 3 would not have that same luxury, as fans know BJ is alive twenty years after he kills Hitler.

The other option for Wolfenstein 3 would see players sticking with the 1980s setting, playing as the older BJ and traversing alternate universes after the events of Wolfenstein: Youngblood. This too has its downsides, with the first being that fans may not get to see his battle with robo-Hitler — a moment gamers have been wanting for years. However, the other key issue with this path is that it might remove a feeling of concern from players.

By leaping into the multiverse like Marvel, the Wolfenstein series is in danger of losing any sense of stakes, as the BJ Blazkowicz that fans have been playing as could die and be replaced by a nearly identical one from another universe. While there is no denying that alternate dimensions open up exciting gameplay opportunities, and lean into Wolfenstein’s more fantastical elements, there is a risk of going too far. After all, though multiple BJs gunning down Nazis across different universes may sound like a lot of fun, it could ultimately feel pointless.

By setting up other universes and jumping forward in time, Wolfenstein: Youngblood has made the prospect of a proper Wolfenstein 3 far more difficult to imagine. MachineGames could play it safe, going back to the 1960s to focus on BJ and his fight against robo-Hitler — with players needing to accept that the protagonist is in no danger of death. The developer could also take the risk of expanding on BJ’s multiverse discovery, skipping the potential robo-Hitler battle entirely. With Wolfenstein players having fought to free a single universe from Nazi control thus far, though, abandoning BJ’s universe in favor of other worlds could be a tough sell. Whatever MachineGames decides on, it could have some difficulties keeping Wolfenstein fans invested in the plot.

The development of Wolfenstein 3 is back online after a developer’s LinkedIn profile mentions an «unannounced game» from MachineGames .

We are talking about Melissa Petrucci , a former UI/UX designer at MachinesGames who later moved to Embark Studios to work on the new game Arc Raiders . At Bethesda, she worked on the Indiana Jones action-adventure and this unannounced project.

The latest entry in the franchise, Wolfenstein: Youngblood , came out in 2019, and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus came out in 2017 . Fans believe that MachineGames’ unannounced project could be just Wolfenstein III — the studio previously only dealt with this series on its own.

In 2019, Bethesda CMO Pete Hines confirmed plans for a sequel. Since then, MachineGames hasn’t mentioned the series again, but has said that will be able to create even more impressive games by joining Microsoft.
