Witchfire – The Astronauts

The Preyer

A short story set in the world of Witchfire. Writer: Adrian Chmielarz. Translation: Ryszard Chojnowski, Aeddan Shaw.

I was close to death, and this time for good. The witchfire in my blood had cooled, with most of it having already evaporated. Were the last drop to have gone, so would I be too, awakening in Hell. The rescue, unlikely as it was, came thanks to human greed and stupidity. The old nag, […]

Witchfire Halloween Week

How six Polish graphic artists see Witchfire through the lens of horror subgenres

We had an idea for this year’s Halloween. Witchfire is a dark fantasy game, and dark fantasy is a subgenre of horror. Because it’s basically fantasy plus horror. But what if, just for the fun of it, we showed the game through the lens of other subgenres? We asked around if any Polish artists would […]

How the opening to Secret of the Monkey Island makes you fall in love with the game in three minutes, and how it inspired the design of Witchfire

Now that is a blog post title we never imagined writing…

Years ago, when making The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, I wrote about game design, using both AAA and indie games as examples. One of the subjects I wrote about way more often that I remembered was game openings. For example, I criticized Bioshock Infinite for they way it opens, while expressing my love for the […]

Read Witch Fire [Wit’ch Fire-ru] online — Jim Tchaikovsky — RuLit

— The fire blazes so that it will overtake the children, wherever they are — on a slope or in a valley. There is absolutely no need to burn the whole neighborhood.

— Let the whole valley turn to dust and ashes, the main thing is to catch the girl.

Rockingham wiped his face with the same handkerchief:

— The garden is the only breadwinner for the entire valley. If these farmers only sniff out who is responsible for the fire…

— The main thing is the girl, — reflections of the glow danced in the opal eyes of Dismarum.

— But the townspeople, they…

— They will become a trap. The fire will force them to seek refuge in Winterfell.

— And you think the townspeople will rush to catch her as soon as they see her? Yes, if they only think that it was she who set fire to the garden, there will be no living place left of her in a second. nine0003

«She must not escape the second time,» Dismarum again pointed his staff at the dead leaves.

Rockingham grunted something and picked up a new torch. Lighting it from the fire still smoldering in the ruins of the stable, he went to the heaps, plunged the torch into the first of them as deep as possible, and before he could rebound, the dry leaves flared up like gunpowder and blazed, crackling and demanding new food.

Coughing from the thick smoke rising from the leaves, Rockingham did not even realize at what moment a gust of wind threw a sheaf of burning leaves at him, swirling around like a swarm of angry wasps. nine0003

Expensive travel cloak flared up in several places at once, and tearing it off and trampling the fire with his heels, Rockingham could not stand it:

— Enough! Enough for me! I’m going back to the city!

Eyes watered from the smoke, the burnt nose turned black, and waving both hands to dispel the black stench, the warrior shouted:

— Dismarum! Do you hear?

But there was no answer.

The old man has probably already moved to the road. Rockingham almost felt his way across the yard over some charred remains of a house, coughing and continually falling into the mud and ashes. Finally the warrior stumbled upon something soft, and bending down, found it to be Dismarum. The old man knelt not far from the corner of the disappeared house and plunged his staff deeper and deeper into the pliable warm earth. Hatred sparkled in the dim eyes of the seer, but it was directed not at the approacher, but somewhere for him. nine0003

Rockingham froze, startled by the unpleasant feeling that someone’s icy gaze was boring into his back.

He turned around abruptly, and what he saw made the warrior scream and fall to his knees beside the old man.

A creature with wide-spread wings and eyes as red as blood towered over the burning heaps. Twice as tall as Rockingham and twice as thin, the monster had translucent skin that showed through its bones and entrails. It was seen how four black hearts were contracting in the chest, driving streams of black blood through the body. The crimson light of the conflagration made it possible to see all the other disgusting movements in his body no less clearly. Rockingham gasped in a vomit spasm, and despite the raging heat around him, a cold sweat broke out on his forehead. The creature suddenly beat its wings, spreading the nauseating smell of burning bone around, but unexpectedly quickly folded them behind its bony narrow shoulders and hobbled around the yard, sinking its clawed paws into the heated earth. Yellowish fangs protruded from a black mouth on a bald and wrinkled head, and high erect ears suddenly swung towards Rockingham. A long arm reached out to him, ending in fleshy clawed fingers that dripped a green, oily liquid. nine0003

And Rockingham recognized this poison and understood who it was. He himself had never seen them, but dull persistent talk about terrible monsters constantly circulated among all the inhabitants of Blackhall. They were skaltums, lieutenants of the Black Lord himself.

The monster opened its mouth to utter something, a long black tongue the length of a human hand moved among the exposed teeth:

— Where is the … shhh … child? Where is the… shsss… the child that the supreme… shsss… master is looking for? The scaltum’s voice was incredibly high and hissing. nine0003

Dismarum raised his head, stubbornly avoiding the monster’s gaze:

“She is full of power…” he waved his hand towards the fire raging in the garden. And burns his footprints. She ran through the garden.

Skalthum lowered his head menacingly to the very face of Dismarum and raised him to the fire with his claw. Rockingham saw the old man strain his neck to keep a sharp claw from tearing through his wrinkled skin.

— So she… ssssssssssssss? Why didn’t you ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss for the owner? nine0003

The old man’s answer rustled like a breath of wind:

— We have prepared a trap for her, and she will be ours before sunrise.

— The Great and Glorious One wants her… shsss… immediately! — the angry skaltum came out with saliva, and its drops hissed on the ground, as if alive. “Don’t piss off the owner… shsss!”

The Traditional Witch: A Modern Approach

Some of the opinions and practices presented in this book may seem somewhat unusual. I am a modern traditional witch, which means that my path is built on folklore, myths and practices, a huge amount of which was passed down in my family from generation to generation, and at the same time, I am a modern person living in the United States of America.

I studied a variety of methods, mostly from an academic point of view, and found that the practice that suited me best was a combination of ancient and modern witchcraft. nine0003

At the same time, old practices acquire new meanings thanks to new information, tools and interpretations. It is unacceptable to think about something: “This is so, because it has always been done this way,” because our ancestors have been perfecting their techniques for centuries. For example, fire can be made by rubbing sticks or matches, or a lighter.

You need to know the old tricks, but it is much more effective and much more convenient to use new approaches.

My tradition is based on three principles. nine0003

Know yourself. This means you should know your strengths and weaknesses (mentally, spiritually and physically).

Keep your balance. Here it is not only about being moderate, but also about understanding your limiting states and working with them. Each action and intention can cause both positive and negative effects and consequences. Whether something is positive or negative (beneficial or harmful) depends on how you look at it. nine0003

Take responsibility. The last, third, principle is the ability to recognize, accept the expected and unexpected consequences of one’s words and actions and the ability to work with them.

What does this mean? I always take into account the possible consequences of any of my actions, even beyond my intention. I try to be mindful of my own limits as well as other people’s limits. I always offer what, in my opinion, can help, not harm. I love my poetry, my rituals, mystical art, but I also rely on common sense, modern comfort, practicality, and especially humor. I have long since discovered that the spirits and deities I work with also have a sense of humor, so despite taking my work seriously, I have learned not to get stuck in practice. I’ve come to the conclusion that being casual and grounded creates strong and effective magic. And life becomes much more interesting. nine0003

It is extremely important to remember that there are always more than one solution. Let yourself create! I suggest that you expand your practice and enjoy it with the help of this book. For the benefit of!

Introduction

Perhaps there is no other object that would be as associated with witchcraft as a cauldron. From Ceridwen to the treacherous sisters in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the cauldron has been used to create an image of witchcraft in the collective unconscious for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Around the world, witch stories mention a witch and her bowler hat. nine0003

It is easy to imagine a dark room, lit only by the fire of the hearth, above which a mysterious brew gurgles in a cauldron, emitting puffs of steam. Or a cauldron hung on a tripod in the center of a magic circle, around which the witches sing something, throwing herbs and other mysterious ingredients into the cauldron. The mystery and mysticism of the bowler hat is due to the fact that, in fact, it is a simple, functional household item. In the old days, the boiler was the main item in cooking, cleaning and other household chores, although this may seem strange to a modern person, spoiled by «microwave ovens» and various kitchen utensils. nine0003

The real power of a witch lies in her ability to turn an ordinary cooking container into a magical tool right before everyone’s eyes. In difficult times, it was much safer to have an ordinary object at home, which, if necessary, “turned” into a tool for magical work, rather than openly declare yourself to those who might wish you harm. In addition, the dual purpose of the boiler helped to save money or space. Just as a broom was used to sweep the floor or «fly», so in the pot it was possible to prepare not only dinner, but also a witchcraft brew for ritual, communication with the gods, or predicting the future. nine0003

These days, as a rule, witches don’t need to fear persecution for their practice, and we love collecting witchy things. In order to use them to the maximum and handle them with ease, you need to be well versed in their meanings and purpose. We will delve into the history of the witch’s cauldron and the mythology associated with it. I will talk about the many nuances that you need to consider when choosing your own boiler (or even several!), As well as how to buy a new one, make it yourself or adapt something already unnecessary to the boiler. We will learn how to use the cauldron: bless it and use it in rituals, how to use it to conjure and create kitchen magic, predict the future, and how to care for the cauldron. We will turn to ancient magic and work with its methods in a new way with unusual and unconventional boilers that you probably have at home. You will find out that this wonderful tool has limitless possibilities and can become your favorite! nine0003

Chapter 1

Meet the cauldron

So, the cauldron. It is an allegorical subject, often referred to in folklore, which has been depicted in art for centuries, and at the same time invisible and ubiquitous. It occupies a central place in mythical magical practices and supernatural transformations, and is also used in cooking and cleaning. There is probably no other instrument so consonant with the modern witch, who daily has to balance mysticism and everyday life. nine0003

A cauldron is…

The word “cauldron” most likely brings up a classic image in your mind: a round, pot-bellied black pot with a tapered neck, possibly with side handles, on a tripod and with an upper holder. This is understandable — after all, the design of the bowler hat has practically not changed for centuries. Let’s try to understand why the circumstances turned out the way they did, and consider several definitions of the cauldron, as well as options for the history of its origin.

A cauldron is:

«A large pot, usually with side handles, for cooking food» «hot bath», and it — from the word cadius — «warmth») (Collins Explanatory Dictionary of the English Language).

«Large cauldron or pot for boiling» (in Middle English — cauderon, the word came from French, where, in turn, came from Latin — caldaria — n. f. R., formed from caldarius — » warming»; derived from calidus — «warm», calere — «to be warm») (University English Dictionary Random House Kernerman Webster). nine0088

As you can see from the origin of the word, a typical boiler was designed to heat and boil liquids. Its round shape makes it easy to stir the liquid in the pot, while at the same time providing a large area for the heated molecules to disperse, which increases steam production (ideal conditions for cooking stews and other dishes that require evaporation) and does not allow the brew to run over the edge. (If you’ve ever had soup run down the stove, try to imagine how you’d deal with such a nuisance when dealing with a large, heavy cauldron hanging over a fire!) All cultures around the world have used pots of this shape to heat liquids. nine0003

General information about boilers

First and foremost, a boiler is a vessel. Its shape is designed to hold contents and promote conduction and heat retention. Usually the boiler is made of metal, mainly iron, because it is wear-resistant and durable. For ease of use, it is very often equipped with side handles, holding on to which you can carry it, pour the brew out of it, and the boiler can also be hung on a hook using chains by the handles. The bottom of the cauldron can be flat so that it can be placed on a flat surface, but most often the cauldron is equipped with three legs so that it can be placed over the fire. Finally, the cauldron has a lid that holds the brew. Because the shape of the kettle allows moisture to evaporate quickly, the lid helps slow evaporation by collecting condensation and keeping cooked food warm. nine0003

Cauldrons were usually made large enough to cook meals for the whole family in them, as well as wash dishes, a versatile kitchen container in which you can boil pasta and wash dishes. Ready-made food and drinks were poured and laid out in smaller containers (bowls, cups, dishes). It should be added that the giant cauldrons depicted next to the witches in the paintings of the late Middle Ages are clearly greatly exaggerated for artistic purposes. Large cauldrons were very expensive, not to mention the fact that a large cauldron cannot be dragged to the middle of the forest. Meanwhile, at the other end of the size range, we see miniature pots exhibited in esoteric and occult shops, created for modern practitioners who cook food in completely different containers, and they wash dishes differently. Some genius figured out that we all love to buy little things, even if they are impractical! nine0003

Deciphering the symbolism

Due to the classic «generous» size, shape and purpose, the cauldron can easily be assigned many different symbolic meanings. But how many of them will be relevant today? Let’s take a look at the symbolism of the cauldron together, which has been preserved over the past decades.

Modern paganism most often associates the cauldron with the womb, respectively, endowing it with feminine qualities through the connection with the Goddess. It is important to remember that household chores (cooking, washing dishes, etc.), as a rule, have long been considered a female occupation, and this also reinforces the «feminine image» of the boiler. Under the guise of religious propaganda, witch hunts were carried out along social and gender lines, so the connection between women’s duties and witchcraft using cauldrons became stronger in the collective unconscious. Another association with the womb can be described as follows: if you put the right ingredients in the cauldron, then something will be “born” from them — but such a simplified approach seems completely stupid, don’t you think? I think that neither the owners of the womb nor the bowlers benefit from such a comparison. nine0003

In many sources I have come across the assertion that the three legs of the cauldron symbolize the Triune Goddess. A charming idea, but the design fairy in me says that the three-legged design is ideal for placing the boiler on an uneven surface. The option with one or two legs is simply non-functional (the contents will spill), and four legs are convenient only if the object is placed on a flat surface, even if all the legs are the same size. Accordingly, the three-legged design is the most functional. But if you like to associate «three-leggedness» with divinity — you are welcome. Symbolism is a manifestation of the connection between the physical and the metaphysical. nine0003

According to the author of this book, the feminineization of the cauldron by modern Pagans has more to do with a desire to revive the concept of the Goddess than with its form or scope. In the second half of the 20th century, neo-paganism was emphatically associated with the «old traditions», there was a struggle between patriarchal concepts and matriarchal or more balanced ideas. But it is worth remembering the countercultures that arose in post-war society, and much becomes clear. During this period, much energy was invested in synchronizing magical practice with sexual separation: bowls and cauldrons became the tools of the Goddess, and wands and athames were manifestations of male energy, both of which were used by priests and priestesses. Gender symbolism can strengthen the connection with the subject and allow you to get acquainted with its perhaps forgotten past, but it can also alienate — especially those who think in non-gender categories. The cauldron itself is much more multifaceted than anatomical associations, it is universal and convenient for everyone. nine0003

As you will learn from the section on history and mythology, the cauldron was not originally seen as an exclusively female tool or utensil and was not exclusively associated with the Goddess. The deep symbolism of the cauldron is due not to its form, but to its centuries-old role in magical practice and mythology.
