Witcher 3 coop: There’s ‘no place’ for multiplayer in The Witcher 3 – Destructoid

Multiplayer Witcher sounds a lot more exciting than a new trilogy

CD Projekt is heading back to the Continent with a new Witcher trilogy that the company teases will «build on the legacy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt». My interest is piqued, but after playing Wild Hunt for hundreds of hours, I quite fancy something that deviates from that formula. Good news: another studio is working on its own «innovative take» on the monster-slayers, and this one is going to have multiplayer.

Like my suggestion that Dandelion should be the protagonist of The Witcher 4 , I’m pretty sure this will inspire people to hurl rotten fruit and veg at me, but I’m a lot more excited by the prospect of something that isn’t just trying to replicate the success of a game I’ve played to death. I’ve travelled all over the Continent alone, aside from the odd NPC companion, and now I’m more than ready to share that experience with some humans.

We know very little about The Molasses Flood’s Witcher romp, codenamed Sirius, except that we’ll be able to play with pals. Nonetheless, there’s a lot of potential here, whether it’s a co-op romp, PvP, or both.

Though Witchers are often presented as solitary mutants, we know that’s not really true—they’ve just got a bad rep. Despite being a big ol’ grump, Geralt collected plenty of friends and allies across the last trilogy, many of them temporarily joining him on his adventures. His relationships and interactions with these pals helped define him and increase the stakes of his quests. CDPR recognises that companionship elevates these quests, and co-op feels like the purest expression of this.

Fatshark’s Vermintide series, along with the imminent Darktide , shows us how we can have our cake and eat it too. You get to traipse off on an adventure with your human pals, but you still get to enjoy the banter and relationships between your characters, who bicker and chat throughout their journey through skaven-infested dungeons. A Witcher-themed Left 4 Dead-style game could be a hoot generally, though I suspect I’d miss the more thoughtful, investigative side of the gig.

With two (or more) heads, The Molasses Flood could really lean into the more studious side of the monster-hunting career path, or at least make it a bit more involved than finding a very convenient tome containing all the relevant information on how to dispatch the current pest. Some of my favourite moments, particularly in tabletop games, have come from the party trying to figure out its approach to solving a conundrum or winning a tricky fight, especially since there’s always one person who just suggests setting everything on fire. It’s me; I’m the one person.

Pure co-op might be my preference, but asymmetric PvP is another tantalising prospect.

Co-op would also give the devs more space to craft extra-challenging brawls and inspire a more tactical style of monster-slaying, even if it just means one Witcher acts as bait and the other sets up a nasty trap. It could potentially open the door to encounters becoming more like puzzles, with each player taking charge of one part of the solution. Again, a bit more like a tabletop game. It’s my solution to everything: every RPG could benefit from tabletop design philosophy.

Pure co-op might be my preference, but asymmetric PvP is another tantalising prospect. Specifically, I’m thinking of Turtle Rock’s tragically under-appreciated Evolve (RIP). It was blessed with one of the most compelling yet straightforward multiplayer setups: you and a bunch of friends get dropped onto an alien world where you have to hunt down a monster, controlled by another player, who gets more and more deadly as the match progresses. This fits The Witcher like a blood-soaked glove.

Nearly everything you’d need to make an entertaining Witcher PvP experience already existed within Evolve. Tracking, for instance, played a significant role, as the large maps offered plenty of hiding spots for the monster. Listening out for startled birds or looking for the carcasses left behind by its last trip to the buffet guided you towards your quarry. I love me some Monster Hunter, but when it comes to making you feel like you’re actually stalking a deadly creature, nothing can really match Evolve. But maybe The Witcher: Sirius could be up to the task.

The wide range of settings and monsters would be a huge boon here, obviously. You could spend your morning hunting down a thirsty vampire in Beauclair and then hop on over to a hag-infested Velen marsh in the afternoon. And since many of the Continent’s menagerie are intelligent, having a human player controlling them should create some confrontations that are more true to the fiction—tense games of cat and mouse where victory is far from assured. Unless I’m playing the monster, that is, because if my performance in Evolve and Dead by Daylight is anything to go by, I’m more of a level 1 boar than an intimidating boss.

Equally exciting is the prospect of playing a character that isn’t a witcher. Both of these setups demand that players embrace different roles, and while not every witcher is the same, with each school having their own way of doing things, I’d love to see some sorceresses getting some love. Or, indeed, some bards. More magic, subterfuge and impromptu lute performances all sound like good ways to spice up a fight.

I’m also keen to see another developer take a crack at The Witcher. CDPR worked magic with Wild Hunt especially, but given how many projects it has on the go, and the state of Cyberpunk 2077 at launch, some new blood just makes a lot more sense. The Molasses Flood also has experience when it comes to multiplayer, though its last game, Drake Hollow, is a co-op survival affair, and that’s very much the opposite of the direction I’d like to see Sirius take. Witchers might like to make their own potent brews, but they shouldn’t be building houses and chopping down trees.

Slightly troubling, however, is the fact that Sirius will also have a singleplayer campaign. We’ve already got multiple singleplayer Witcher games coming and Sirius has the opportunity to stand alone as something properly novel, but it looks like it can’t quite escape the last trilogy’s legacy. Look, I know there are too many live service multiplayer romps and any suggestion that a singleplayer property should pivot to multiplayer sounds like a threat, but this split focus means The Molasses Flood won’t be able to give either component all of its attention. I should probably rein in my expectations.

Nah, fuck it, I’m still excited.

Witcher 3 Multiplayer Mod — Find Out About Online Witcher 3 Gameplay

Just to put you out of your misery, let me be blunt. There is NO Witcher 3 multiplayer mod. That’s right. I know it hurts to say this but I don’t think we can ever share the experience of playing Witcher 3 with someone else. So far there is no word on if it is even going to be possible to play this game in multiplayer or make a Witcher 3 multiplayer mod.

Now some of you might think that Skyrim did it! Why not Witcher 3? Yes, there is a multiplayer mod for Skyrim, but it isn’t fully functional and isn’t very player-friendly. Imagine a game like Skyrim that has way more advanced and modder-friendly tools, and si still struggling to bring a multiplayer mode to the table. So what choice that does Witcher 3 have.

There are many players in the modding community who are ready to work on building a Witcher 3 multiplayer mod. Though they cannot do it because of many reasons. The main reason here is the lack of advanced tools to design a multiplayer mod, and then the required budget to work on said mod. Even if they did have those things, the procedure ain’t that simple.

A modder has to understand the intricate complexities of designing a multiplayer component with all the networking, positioning, client & server aspects, reverse engineering the whole game to find every detail, and many other elements. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and this isn’t something a modder can do. It requires a professional team of highly skilled individuals to design such a Witcher 3 Multiplayer mod.

Also, CD Projekt and CD Projekt Red have no intention of adding a multiplayer mode to the game. So I don’t think there is any hope for this.

What Other Options Do We Have for Witcher 3 Multiplayer Mod?

There are no other options for the player to experience the world of The Continent in multiplayer mode. We might have had a chance if the developers behind the game were interested in adding a multiplayer mode, but since they aren’t, all hope is lost in that aspect. Now that we know there is no Witcher 3 Multiplayer mod or a chance for the Witcher 3 coop to be made, what can we do?

Well, the only thing a Witcher 3 fan can do is go back to playing the campaign alone and not get a chance to flex about how easily they took down Eredin or Imlerith. As frustrating as it is, might just have to move on and find some other game like Witcher 3 that does support a multiplayer mode. Luckily, we have some games that may have a chance to fill that giant-sized Witcher 3 multiplayer mod hole.

Some of these games might be a bit similar to Witcher, while others may have a completely different feel. Regardless, the ones we are going to list here are all amazing games to try out. That is if you didn’t already play them. Check them all out from the list below.

Games Like Witcher 3 With a Mutliplayer Mode

To be honest, there are many games that may provide you with the same rush of adrenaline as playing Witcher 3. Though there aren’t many that also offer a multiplayer mode in the same settings. So we shall do our best to add the games that will at least offer the excitement as Witcher 3, even if it is off the gird of the said game’s setting.

Skyrim Is One of the Best Options

The Elder Scrolls Skyrim doesn’t actually have a multiplayer mode in the vanilla game, but you can always use mods. The modding community has designed a mod that allows players to join in on the multiplayer fun. Players can download and install the Skyrim Together mod to join or create a server where can play with their friends.

Though one thing that you might wanna know about this mod is that it is still in development, which means that players will often encounter certain bugs in the gameplay. Another thing to keep in mind is the multiplayer mod doesn’t allow players to play the story mode in co-op. You can only play quests with your friends in multiplayer mode.

Players might be able to play story quests together if they are in synch with their stories, and they have to start the match for the same quests. There’s actually a lot more you should know about this mod before trying it. To do that check out this Skyrim Together mod article that explains everything you need to know about it.

Another Game Where You Can Slay Huge Monsters

If we talking about monsters how can we miss this huge title from Capcom? Yes, we are talking about Monster Hunter World. This is one of the best multiplayer fantasy games, and easily be an alternative to Witcher 3 game. It’s not exactly the same as Witcher but it does the same kind of satisfaction of taking down huge monsters.

The game is only a multiplayer one it doesn’t have a campaign, but that doesn’t stop it from being great. Actually, multiplayer is all the rage now. For some reason, people think that single-player campaigns are a thing of the past, but games like Witcher 3 prove them otherwise. The Monster Hunter World is the 5th installment in the franchise that offers a huge world to explore with your friends.

Players get to complete quests and loot from the world and upgrade their characters in the game. Hunting, killing, and looting are the way to go.

Dark Souls Is the Game That Comes Pretty Close to Witcher 3

When it comes to combat and gameplay, the game that comes most close to Witcher 3 is the Dark Souls series. Dark Souls has an amazing combat system that forces you to grow as a player and employ different sword techniques to come out alive from a battle. Witcher 3 might not be as demanding as Dark Souls in terms of combat but does have some difficult bosses.

Also, the healing system of Witcher 3 and Darks Souls game is kinds of similar. Especially the Dark Souls 2 game where you cannot just heal quickly in the midst of a boss fight. Strategy and craft use of potions is the only way to survive Dark Souls, which is sometimes also the case in Witcher 3. It all comes down to skill in both games. Unlike Witcher 3, the Dark Souls series offer multiplayer cooperative gameplay for players.

You can join in with 3 other players on the cooperative gameplay and get enough help to down those monsters. There is even an option to summon certain NPCs to get help in battles.

Dragon Age Inquisition Also Has a Coop Mode

Join with 4 of your friend for cooperative gameplay in Dragon Age Inquisition. This is also a role-playing game where players get to choose from 12 different classes and go on quests to progress through the game. This is pretty much the same for campaign or multiplayer. Though the multiplayer mode is pretty simple as you go through different zones to clear all the enemies and loot. The loot found from those quests can be used to upgrade your character items and XP is used to upgrade their skills.

There are five zones in total in the multiplayer mode, each of them a little different but easy to navigate. This is for the first four zones in the game. For the 5th and final zone, players have to defend themselves against a wave of enemies followed by a boss.

Fight Multiplayer Matches in Middle Earth

Again, Middle Earth Shadow of War has the same fantasy elements as Witcher 3. The game story takes place between Hobbit and LOTR movies made from R.R.Tolkein books. It is a third-person action role-playing game set in an open world. The game story has certain main quests and optional ones that players can choose to finish and progress through the game.

The multiplayer mode in this game is a little different from the usual gameplay. Instead of a coop or a multiplayer PvP, this game has a unique game mode. The Social Conquest Mode is where you have to conquer other players’ fortress b invading them. You can choose to play safe with a friendly mode or take a risk of losing your follower orcs in a ranked match.

Other than that, the game also has Vendettas, where you have to kill an orc that killed your ally in another world. In this mode, you are transported to the ally’s world and you have to find and kill that monster. You only get one shot so don’t mess it up.

How Can We Forget Diablo Iii

One of the best games ever made for in an RPG genre, Diablo III also has an interesting and fun multiplayer mode. This game set the bar so high for RPGs that there are only a few that can even come close to it. The hack and slash dungeon hunting game is one of the few, that will be remembered for ages to come.

When it comes to multiplayer mode for Diablo III, players can either join friends or play randomly with strangers. After you choose a public or a private game in multiplayer mode, then comes the option to choose the game mode. It includes modes like Rift, Keywarden, Brawling, and Monster slaying. The game might not be as vast as Witcher 3s world but that doesn’t matter for this game. As it is all about gameplay.

If you are a gamer and prefer multiplayer games, then there is probably no need for me to tell you more about this game. Just install this and you might just have the best time of your life, which is if you prefer this kind of genre and gameplay.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

This game is more in the lines of Dragon Age games as both are isometric RPG games. It is one of the best role-playing games which was evident by the sales. The game allows players to choose between different races and play the game either solo or with 3 other players. The multiplayer can be played in both online and offline modes.

Create a party of 4 and control them in the game and send them on individual missions. This is also possible in multiplayer mode. Even your friends can join you in the story with the multiplayer mode. Unlike Witcher 3 multiplayer mod, this game doesn’t require a mod to play it in multiplayer mode. Though there are many other mods and character creation for customization of your character like merging and making a new character with different races, etc.

While there is a limit to the number of people who can join you in the game, you can use mods to increase that limit in the multiplayer mode.

Bloodborne Supports Coop

From all the games we have listed in this article so far, this one is a little different. That’s because this is a PlayStation exclusive. Don’t let that stop you from trying this gem because it is one of the best action RPGs that came out in the last decade. At first glance, this might seem like another Dark souls rip-off, but that is far from the case. it might feel that way because both the games are made by the same person, Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Set in the gothic world of Yhamam, you select a character who is a hunter and is on the path of finding the reason for the spread of a blood-borne disease caused by some plague. Now, why are we talking about this game here? Because it offers a different but at the same time a little similar gameplay experience to the Witcher 3. While a Witcher 3 multiplayer mod is not available for the game, this one can be played without one.

There is an option in the game’s setting that presents this game in multiplayer mode.

The Fallout: New Vegas With a Multiplayer Mod

Modder may not have been able to make a Witcher multiplayer mod but there are many other games that received a multiplayer feature using mods. One such hit game is Fallout: New Vegas. The ruins of the post-apocalyptic world might not be for everyone to explore and survive but this is definitely a great addition to the Fallout series. In the single-player mode, you play as “The Courier” who is on a path of revenue for almost getting killed by some individual and being buried alive.

Many gamers are not satisfied with just a single-player campaign that can be finished after a few days. This is especially if great games like this, so modders decided to bring their A-game and make a multiplayer mod. This mod did have its issues but was working fine, till they took it down in 2019. Now, in 2021, the work on these mods has been started again and is still in development.

While the mod is not live yet, you can still know more about it and new updates from this discord server.

Saved the Best for the Last

Just like many other multiplayer games that don’t require a mod to join other in-game, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one such game that can be played directly without a mod. The game was a massive hit for Rockstar Studios that released this prequel in 2019. This isn’t an RPG like many others in this list but is an action-adventure set in the old west.

In the solo campaign, the player has to attempt to deal with the American expansion leading to the download of Old West. All while surviving from government and rival gangs. The game is a massive open world that contains many interesting elements. That can even give the Witcher 3 a run for its money. When it comes to multiplayer, many players can join in the same map and hunt each other down. While one or the other just be minding their own business, so watch your backs.

The game has an option called Posses, where you can join forces with other players in the game. This can be persistent or temporary posses. With temporary posses, the limit is 4 players. On the other hand, if we talk about persistent posses, the limit is 7 members and requires some amount to currency to create a merry band of them.

Well, these are our picks for filling out that void left by not having a Witcher 3 multiplayer mod. There is no denying the fact that any other cannot provide the experience that Witcher 3 did. Though that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy other games. So check out the above list and pick out your favorite, and start joining others for the multiplayer madness.

Modding Witcher 3

Even though there are Witcher 3 multiplayer mods or Witcher 3 co op mods, there are plenty of others that greatly enhance your gameplay experience. If you are new to gaming or using mods then you may not know how to add them. Don’t worry though because we are going to provide you with the instructions for that.

Making mods for the game could be difficult but adding mods to them is relatively simple.

  • So the first thing that you should do is, download the mod you need for your game.
  • Then extract the downloaded mod file that is usually in a zip or rar file.
  • Now cut/copy those extracted files and paste them in the mods folder of your Witcher 3 game.
  • Sometimes this isn;t enough for the mods to work, you may have to add certain key binding to the mod files, or make configuration to them.
  • In any case, if there are any additonal steps required in installing a mod, they are usually mentioned in the mod’s download page.
  • In some rare cases, you might have to use a script merger to merger mods.

These are the basics of modding a Witcher 3 game. If you need nu additional information then check this modding guide. For a visual explanation of this, a Youtube video could be useful.

A Multi Companion Mod for Witcher 3

I think we have talked enough about the Witcher 3 multiplayer mod, and it’s time we discussed something different. One of the many things that I loved about Skyrim is that there’s always a companion to accompany you on missions. They also help in battles and work as your personal luggage carriers. This feature isn’t available in The Witcher 3, which is something I wish was included in the game.

Looks like I wasn’t the only one who felt that way. Because there are some mods to add companions to Witcher 3 game. Mods like Multi Companion Mod Enhanced or the Multi Companion mod lets you add a +1, +2, +3, or multiple companions with Geralt on his missions. So now our Gwynbleidd won’t feel lonely while slaying wraiths or any other monsters in the game. The latter is the initial mod that allows players to add any number of companions with Geralt and have them follow him.

The former is just a better version of the mod with more characters present as companions. With the enhanced version you can even spawn NPCs, monsters, and a few other characters. Both mods allow players to give the command to these spawned companions. The instructions for download and installation are already provided in the above section. Just check them out and read more about those mods from the download links.

Wrapping Up

Do not be sad if there is no Witcher 3 multiplayer mod because you have plenty of other options. Add some interesting and unique mods to completely overhaul the vanilla game. This provides the player with a new experience. Experiment with mods after you finish the game and DLC content so that it feels fresh. If it’s the multiplayer experience that you desire, then I believe the list mentioned in this article should fill your thirst.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)

Does the witcher 3 have multiplayer?

Is Witcher 3 multiplayer possible with mods?

While many games didn’t first have the multiplayer option at first, modders created a mod that brought in the multiplayer mode to the game. So it is natural that players would think that would be possible with this game as well, but this is not the case here. There are no multiplayer mods for this game, and there is a good chance that there won’t be any in the near future.

How many companions can you add with the multi companion mod?

Installing the enhanced multi companion mod will allow players to add up to 25 companions to the game. Imagine having 25 characters following you around in the game, it would be fun and weird at the same time.

What are some of the best multiplayer games if you love Witcher 3?

If you love Witcher 3 then you should definitely check out games like Assassins Creed Valhalla/Odessy, Sekiro: Shadows die twice, Dark Souls, God of War, etc for the solo campaign. When it comes to multiplayer mode, try games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Monster Hunter World, Diablo 3, Skyrim, Dragon Age: Inquisition, etc.

The future of CD Projekt RED is inextricably linked to the franchises Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher , announced CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiczynski at an investor meeting last Tuesday. From 2022, the studio plans to develop several large projects at once in parallel with . However, the production strategy will change and expand.

CD Projekt RED will continue to release single player games, but almost all of them will now receive multiplayer modes and online components — immediately or after the release of . The new approach is part of an initiative to expand key brands into new formats.

The slide below shows the major changes.

For example, if the studio used to focus exclusively on the RPG genre, now it wants to create genre hybrids with an RPG basis. Recall that Cyberpunk 2077 in pre-release promotional materials has already been called not a “role-playing game”, but an “adventure action movie”.

The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 universes will be developed in parallel, thinking not only about AAA games, but also about auxiliary projects that can potentially strengthen brands (for example, mobile game The Witcher: Monster Slayer ), as well as non-game products based on them (toys, figures, gadgets, anime like CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS and so on).

In addition, an important part will be the reorganization of work in the studio, which in the future will allow less workload for employees and save them from hard overwork. This initiative is called RED 2.0.

According to Adam Kiczynski, the studio is currently creating a technological structure that will allow the studio to easily integrate multiplayer components into their games. But CD Projekt RED has no plans to go online.

«CD Projekt RED makes single story AAA games — that’s not changing. What’s changing is our long-term approach to online. In the future, we need to be properly prepared to incorporate online elements into our games where it makes sense. And in the process, we don’t want to overdo it and walk away from what we’re loved for.»

This year, the studio will focus on refining Cyberpunk 2077 and bringing The Witcher 3 to next-gen consoles.
