HPET is short for High Precision Event Timer which is often used for synchronizing multimedia streams, reducing the need to use other timestamp calculations, and smoothing the playback.
However, although HPET can increase the performance of your PC, it triggers FPS loss and latency & freezes in games. If you encounter low FPS or stuttering when gaming, you can try to disable HPET to get better game performance. Some of you might ask, “Is it safe to disable HPET on Windows 10 and 11?” The answer is absolutely yes. In this post, we’ll show you two ways to disable HPET. Without further ado, let’s dive right in.
Tip: Most Windows 10/11 builds disable HPET by default so if you receive a error message after trying the two methods below, don’t worry. It just means that the HPET utility on your PC was already turned off.
How to Disable HPET Windows 10/11?
# Way 1: Disable HPET via CMD
You can disable HEPT to reduce game stuttering by using the CMD command. Here’s how to disable HPET Windows 10/11:
Step 1. Press Win + S at the same time to evoke the search bar.
Step 2. Type cmd to locate Command Prompt and do a right-click on it to choose Run as administrator.
Step 3. Copy & paste the following command and tap on Enter to disable DPET.
bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock
bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes
Step 4. Reboot your computer to make this change effective.

# Way 2: Disable HPET via Device Manager
Another easy way to disable High Precision Event Timer is using Device Manager Settings. To disable HPET Windows 11/10 in this way:
Step 1. Do a right-click on the Windows icon and choose Device Manager in the drop-down menu.
Step 2. Expand System devices, locate High precision event timer and right-click on it.
Step 3. In the drop-down menu, choose Disable device.
Step 4.
Press Yes in the warning message to confirm this action.

The HPET (High Precision Event Timer) is a timer that is used in most PCs and in some cases it increases performance, but in most cases causes FPS loss, freezes in games, and higher latency overall.
Today’s topic of discussion is pretty simple, namely, how to get rid of the HPET timer and get lower operating system latency for more consistent FPS.

How to Disable HPET
The main reason you would want to disable HPET is that this timer often leads to worse FPS in games and is actively hindering a possible lower system latency. The increase in FPS is well documented therefore there is no reason for you to not go ahead with the tweak.
Once off, your system will use the TSC timer which is an on-die timer that has lower latencies than HPET, which is located on the chipset. Currently, all modern CPUs produced by Intel/AMD have the capability to work on Invariant TSC or Constant TSC which is preferred for better performance.
To get rid of HPET you need to open CMD with administrator privileges and type – bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock and then restart your machine.
This will permanently disable HPET from your machine and to test that you should use the bcdedit /enum command. Once opened you should see that your CMD is telling you that there is no value for useplatformclock.
Most custom Windows 10/11 builds already have this feature off so if you get an error message after putting in the command it simply means that HPET was already disabled.
Only turn off HPET from your Windows and do not touch the setting in your BIOS as it might cause unnecessary issues and bog down your machine.
How to Disable Synthetic Timers
Older versions of Windows did not use synthetic timers but the current Windows 10/11 builds all do, therefore this is another “feature” you need to disable to achieve better latency and more stable inputs.
To get rid of synthetic timers you need to once again open up CMD with administrator privileges and type in the following command – bcdedit /set useplatformtick yes.
Once done restart your machine and use the bcdedit /enum command to confirm the change.
What this allows you to do is to manually set a “clean” Windows timer value like 0.5 ms or 1ms instead of 0.567ms or 1.0908ms etc.
The reason you do not want the extra digits is that these cause your inputs and mouse polling rate to be skippy and all over the place. You might not necessarily feel it the moment you pick up your mouse, but your inputs will feel snappier once you disable HPET and synthetic timers.
How to Disable Dynamic Tick
Dynamic tick is a power-saving feature enabled on laptops that helps them preserve battery life. If you are aiming for the best possible performance and inputs even on a laptop such a feature being enabled is counterproductive.
To disable dynamic tick open CMD with administrator privileges and use the command – bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes. Restart your machine afterward and you should be set.
You should also do some monitoring of your hardware and see which power plan is best for your laptop (since laptops are more thermally constrained) in terms of performance.
Often the high-performance power plans actually slow down your laptop because the main components are being kept running at all times, heating them and leading to thermal throttling. This might not necessarily be true for your laptop but generally, the balanced power plan is a safe choice overall.
How to Change Your Windows Timers Manually
To take full advantage of all of the CMD tweaks you have done related to timers you need to use some software like Intelligent standby list cleaner that will allow you to tweak your timer resolution manually (and also other features like cleaning your system memory) to achieve a lower value.
There are also many alternatives available online but most of them do the same thing so there is no major difference between which one you use, the main thing being that you do use at least one.
With all of these tweaks done to your PC, you should download MouseTester and TimerBench to ensure that you are using Invariant TSC and that your mouse polling forms a stable graph that indicates that your latency is nice and tight. If everything looks alright this means that you have completed your tasks properly.
