Colonial Marines’ Tester Claims Wii U is Worst Version
By

An anonymous QA tester who worked on ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’ suggests the game’s forthcoming Wii U version is the worst.
By now gamers have already read our Aliens: Colonial Marines review and watched our first impressions gameplay video, and found out that Gearbox Software’s latest is less than desirable. However, recent developments with the game suggested the yet-to-be-released Wii U version might, in fact, be the definitive version of the game.
The disconnect between screenshots and trailers released for Aliens: Colonial Marines — which looked moody and atmospheric — and the final product appeared to be a byproduct of platform limitations, with a new theory suggesting the Wii U corrects all that. As it turns out, though, the Wii U version might be the worst of them all.
That’s according to an unnamed QA tester that worked on the game, who took to Reddit to say that the Wii U version of Colonial Marines is ostensibly the same game, only with «frame rate issues, texture loading, and horrendously misguided minigames thrown in.» Part of what makes the Wii U version worth the wait is apparently gamepad-specific mechanics, like using the device as the series’ iconic motion tracker.
Beyond being a handy way to anticipate a xenomorph attack, the QA tester reveals tracking the series’ iconic aliens using the device gives players a damage bonus. Additionally there is a minigame that pops up anytime the player cuts open a door using the game’s welding tool whereby they must keep heat «optimal.»
Ironically, the door-welding mechanic appears numerous times throughout the single player campaign, and was rather obtrusive to forward progress. But to know the animation (it’s not really a mechanic) is there for a Wii U minigame only heightens its uselessness on other platforms.
Unfortunately, the QA tester’s responses have since been removed from the popular site, likely because he violated the terms of his employee contract. A similar thread began on Reddit last week in which a former developer on the game revealed that Gearbox Software outsourced work on Aliens: Colonial Marines to several studios including TimeGate. The anonymous source claimed that Gearbox spent much of the game’s troubled, 6+-year development keeping their most prized properties (i.e. Borderlands 2) at the forefront of their minds.
Are you still holding out hope for the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines? Has the poor reception for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 version soured any hope of the Wii U version redeeming the game?
Aliens: Colonial Marines is still targeting a March release for the Wii U.

Synopsis
In 2179, a group of Marines were sent aboard USS Sulaco to investigate a potential xenomorphic infestation of the LV-426 colony, which turned out to be true. Since then, the connection with « Sulaco and her crew was lost except for a transmission from Corporal Hicks. But a few weeks later, « Sulaco» was again found orbiting LV-426. In the face of this inexplicable return, the USCMC deployed USS Sephora with an entire battalion of Marines to investigate under the command of Captain Cruise. They discover that sulaco has been captured by the Weyland-Yutani and is being used to breed xenomorphs at the end of their research. The player embodies Corporal Christopher Winter, who is part of the vanguard of the Second Wave of Marines, and finds himself in the very heart of this hell.
game system
The game is an FPS that immerses the player in a futuristic and terrifying world of Aliens, with sets and items originally created over 25 years ago.
The player’s health is represented by three life bars that drain as they take damage. Until the bar is completely discharged, after a while it will fill up again. Note that if a player is hit by Xenomorphic Molecular Acid, their health will not regenerate while the acid is active.
The player can rely on modern equipment, which includes many types of weapons and gadgets, to exterminate the enemies standing in his way. If he can carry more than a dozen different weapons, he can only use four (primary, secondary, pistol, and grenades/mines). Not to mention, some weapons, such as smart guns or flamethrowers, can only be used until you run out of ammo.
Development
The game was reportedly delayed several times to allow Gearbox to complete its other projects. The studio working on Borderlands 2, then decides to outsource the development of Aliens: Colonial Marines . The single-player campaign is delegated to TimeGate Studios, downloadable content for Demiurge and Nerve Studios, while PPC oversees outsourcing and takes care of multiplayer.
Some inconsistencies and anachronisms seen in the base game are explained and fixed in the DLC « Stasis Interrupted», where the player plays three new protagonists who will help Hicks fight Weyland-Yutani.
House
Critical
The game receives very unfavorable reviews. Its Metacritic score remained unchanged at 42 out of 100 based on 27 tests from specialized magazines and websites. The main criticism is based on the graphics engine being considered «ludicrous» and the script presenting several inconsistencies with the James Cameron film: Aliens, the return of of which the game claims to be a sequel.
Sales
In 2015, 1.3 million copies were announced worldwide, all media combined. The figure is more than disappointing because it took at least 3 million copies sold to restore production.
Controversial
Unfavorable reviews from the trade press and disappointment from the players greatly tarnished all the actors involved in this chaotic production:
Several players have teamed up through the law firm Edelson LLC to attack Sega and Gearbox for accusing them of false marketing. Indeed, a few months before the game’s release, they displayed some images of the game at various trade shows, indicating that this is the final version and not the final one. Sega spent at least $1 million to settle the lawsuit out of court. For its part, developer Gearbox was persistent and was acquitted after dropping the plaintiffs in 2015.
Disastrous title returns, and disappointing sales motivated Sega to cancel the Wii U version.
Gearbox’s co-developer TimeGate Studios went bankrupt a few months after the game’s release.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced in 2015 that he lost almost $10 million due to the game’s disappointing sales.
