Wc3 tower defense: Tower Defense (TD) category map list | Warcraft 3: Reforged

Top TD Maps EVER? | HIVE

I read the RPG thread and I guess i’ll make my own thread.

The tower defense. Probably my favorite kind of map in warcraft3. I was wondering your opinions about the top TD maps ever.

Feel free to submit your letter grades!

Poker TD — The grand daddy of Gem TD, not as much towers/etc, but still one of it’s kind. Not as high ranked as element or gem TD because it isn’t as complicated and doesn’t have as much replay value as maybe those have.
A

Wintermaul — Probably changed the TD itself. Not ranked as high as maybe element or Gem TD because it didn’t have any very special features.
A

Element TD — One of the most well made TDs there are. Would have been an A++ if maybe it would have been a maze TD. before you burn me on this statement, i have to say that i think maze tower defenses are almost always better than ones without mazes. it creates a whole new dimension. however, the game might not have fit as well it was maze. but to be honest, you don’t need to listen to my statement. Just play the game! =p.
A+

Gem TD — Although the terrain is somewhat took from cube defense, it is still a one of it’s kind td. Could have gave it An A++ if it thought of a new terrain that would fit gem td as well as the Cube defense one, and would be different.
A+

I probably missed some, but these are the ones that I have played.

The next ones aren’t «the best td ever» but still very good TDs IMO.

Artifact TD — Very fun, good system with the save and load, but the terrain is a bit stolen. Also, it does get old when you get 1000 + points and have the best maze you possibly can get.
B

Shopping Maul — Great td with the points system, well made, however it has a maul system, and nothing really new. and although a different maul, it is still a maul.
Update : after playing Shopping Maul again, I gained some respect for it. The xp system is better then the first time i played it, and it is incredibly well thought. It seemed like a very good TD before, now it is an awesome TD.
B+

Switch TD — If anyone has played this before, they know that it is a well made td, that had a unique system, and is very fun. However, I didn’t change TDs like the top tiers have. And even though the combination lane system was very well thought through, I think it maybe could have been employed into the map a tiny bit better.
B

eeve TD — The creator put alot of effort into it, it looks very good. However, the lack of tower selection and the fact that it is a very very new td somewhat hinders its rankings.
Update: Moved eeve TD up rankings a bit, after some thought. Yes it is new and there are like 5 towers per element, but I think the system more than makes up for it.
B

*Power Towers — I put this on the list solely because it had a new, unique system that was addictive. however, the terrain is basically 100% plagiarized.
Update: Played it some more. I was more impressed with the system after I played it. However, the game can get incredibly boring after 30, if you have a good maze, that is.
B-

*Rune TD — This shouldn’t even be on the list because of it’s horrible creep balance, and it the whole life system isn’t thought through. However, i just want to note the excellent rune system. It could have been so much better if the creator put some effort into the creep balance. what a shame.
Update :
I just played the new version, and I have to say I am more impressed with the creep balance. However, the thing still is that until level 9ish, you can’t die, period. Also, at level 20ish the game almost always fatals.
B-/B
Very borderline between B- and B.

That is my list, i bet i missed some obvious ones, but these are the ones on my mind atm. What is your list?

Notes : I didn’t put zoator TD on the list because i never really played it. It looks really well made, but i’ve never played it.No tower wars, just Tower Defense. Green td and Mafarazo TD are not quality TDs, you just spam siege towers, then spam aura, then spam air.

Sept 12th, 08.

Revamped the system, added a letter grade then I changed some opinions about the TD.

Maybe I’ll add cube defense later, but i only played it briefly once so far, i can’t really rate it yet.

and once again, feel free to submit your OWN letter grades!

Pumped custom from Warcraft 3. Review Champs TD — Games on DTF

Tower defense inspired by custom crafts from the classic game.

The game is announced for the Windows platform.

Plot

None.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay is classic Tower Defense with modern features.

At the beginning we will have a little training. Here they will teach you how to place turrets and develop them inside the mission. Everything is as simple and clear as possible.

Part of the tutorial.

After training, we get into the local world. It consists of 15 levels divided into three groups with different base difficulty. First you have to overcome easier locations, this will give access to more difficult ones.

Noob possibilities.

Each of the 15 levels itself, in turn, has four gradations of difficulty. More rewards are due for passing more serious tests. And, as usual, access to complex content opens after passing a simple one.

Difficulty variations within the level.

Levels are fairly simple maps in which enemies fall from one portal, and we need to defend the other by building towers. For killing opponents they give gold, for it we build and pump (inside the race) our buildings. Classic.

Fight-fight-fight.

A hero under our control erects buildings. It also evolves over time. For a set of experience, the construction of new types (there are eight in total, they open quickly) of towers is made available and provide resources for global development.

The hero only builds — useless in combat.

Our unit is sitting in the bushes below.

Quite interesting and unusual feature for the genre is that the enemies, on the same level with the same difficulty, attack completely different. That is, two identical battles (at least formally, because the layout of the towers is always approximately the same) does not happen.

There are a lot of types of enemies and they can have special properties, such as health regeneration, increased defense, or be flying. There are powerful boss units that also attack in groups.

Powerful spiders.

For overcoming the level we receive a reward in crystals. They will be useful to us for global development.

Global upgrade tree.

There are also alternative pleasant ways to get crystals — completing dynamic tasks that can be tracked in the start menu and completing achievements.

WHAT DID I DRAW WARCRAFT 3 TO?

Similar art styles, although the enemies and towers are original. The cursor to control the hero when we tell him to move is very similar. When a tower is placed or the level of the hero rises, a characteristic golden glow appears above them.

In general, there is nostalgia.

Consider the pros and cons of the game, sum up.

PROS:

+ Simple but nice graphics.

+ Good sound (not musical) accompaniment

+ Quite a lot of types of locations and a lot of difficulty options.

+ Random enemies on each level, many kinds of enemies.

+ Quite a few types of towers.

+ A good system for upgrading towers both inside the race and globally.

WHAT CAN BE BOTH A PLUS AND A MINUS:

+- You will have to grind a lot to unlock all the upgrades of all the towers and go through difficult difficulties. As for me, in this case, this is a plus. In addition, there is a time accelerator inside the level for the most impatient.

MINUSES:

— There is no Russian localization of at least the text. The required level of knowledge of English is the minimum. If you have experience playing TD, then everything is quite standard.

— No music. Or did not understand how to turn it on. Serious bug.

— When an aura tower is placed, it does not transform the area very nicely.

Two auras — would reduce this yellow glow.

CONCLUSIONS

The game does not have enough stars from the sky, but it is a decent tower defense with the addition of modern elements (global development, achievements, quests). Besides, it can play on the nostalgia of those who liked to overcome custom TDs based on Warcraft 3.

Something like that. It’s nice to win.

PS: Probably didn’t cover all the aspects, might have missed something. I will be glad to supplement / correct the review or answer questions in the course of communication in the comments.

PPS: Review written after 2 hours of overcoming.

Have a good game everyone!

Legendary custom from Warcraft 3 — hide and seek from Petrosyan and protect the fortress

Warcraft III gave millions of gamers not only one of the most epic storyline campaigns in the history of video games, but also a huge space for their own experiments. It was from a custom map to a full-fledged title that Dota 2 once grew. But Dota was far from the only popular user mode. Although other custom maps have not turned into full-fledged games, they have found their fans. About the brightest and most curious custom modes from Warcraft III — in the material Cybersport. ru.

«Petrosyanshchina», or simply «Petra»

The humorous program «Crooked Mirror» has been on television for almost 20 years. The show and its main character Yevgeny Petrosyan during this time have already turned into a meme on their own, which was reflected even in Warcraft III thanks to the custom “Petrosyanshchina”, or “Petra”. In it, the players were divided into two teams: the first one had to hide and build redoubts around themselves from towers and other defensive structures, and the second one had to try to find and destroy opponents.

Similar modes existed before «Petrov»: for example, many can remember the custom game, in which it was necessary to escape from vampires in the same way. However, «Petrosyanshchina» brought a bright national flavor and bad jokes, which, as you know, are sometimes very appropriate. As a result, the players had to save themselves not from a terrible monster or demon, but from Evgeny Vaganovich Petrosyan himself, who wanted to turn everyone he met into a fan of the Crooked Mirror. And he pursued not ordinary nameless peasants, but «KVN fans» who flatly refused to participate in the recording of his show. There were many small jokes in the custom: from portraits of characters and sounds from the «Crooked Mirror» to the names of protective buildings («citadel of humor», «strong figulin», etc.).

«Petra»

2/2

«Petra»

«Petrov» has dozens (if not hundreds) of modifications, many of you are probably more familiar with the Reborn version. However, the general concept remained the same: Petrosyan swung in the forest and collected artifacts in order to go hunting later, and KVN fans used this time to collect resources and create protective redoubts. At the same time, Petra turned out to be custom, dependent on competent teamwork, because usually users were divided into pairs (less often into triples) to make it more convenient to hold the defense.

You can still find a lot of guides and tutorials on playing both roles on the Internet. And the Peters themselves also migrated to Dota 2, although you can still find servers with this custom map in Warcraft III.

Castle fight

Castle fight can be called a true classic of custom maps in Warcraft III. Its popularity can be explained by the simplicity of the gameplay: the main task of the game is to destroy the opponent’s base. And you don’t have to go into battle yourself, everything will be done for you by the units you created, which cannot be controlled. The fortresses are opposite each other, they are separated by a road on which battles take place. The mode is designed for ten people, but you can play it both 5v5 and 1v1 — the main thing is that the number of participants is even.

fight3 to figure it out right away and it did not require special microcontrol on the part of the gamer, so it was perfect for just relaxing and passing the evening. However, the map was not primitive. Even a child could figure it out, but winning is another matter. Here it was already necessary to activate their own tactical skills, developed with experience, or be guided by guides, of which there were quite a lot. Proper combination of troops, economic management and timely use of spells were the key to victory. At the same time, there were more than a dozen races in Castle fight, so in any match it was necessary to be able to adapt to the opponent and counter him. In addition, all units were unique in terms of characteristics, bonuses and skills, and all this had to be taken into account when recruiting your own army.

Legion TD

The most famous custom map in the Tower Defense genre. Popularity came to it largely due to the introduction of the so-called PvP-mode. Prior to Legion TD, most tower defense maps involved teaming up (or single-handedly) defending something against waves of enemies with static towers. In the same custom, each player not only defended, but also attacked the opponent. Users had to build their own redoubts and at the same time spend resources on units that would join the raid on the enemy. Adding this very second variable to the equation significantly diversified the gameplay and tactical variability.

, as in many other custom games of this genre, but directly on the path of the enemies. At the same time, the attackers themselves did not just run to the cherished goal, but fought with the defenders. Consequently, the player needed to come up with the most effective defensive redoubt formations in order to maintain a balance between damage and durability.

Green Circle TD

Green Circle TD is less revolutionary and less popular than Legion TD. However, this is an example of a classic old-school custom game in the Tower Defense genre. It is designed for eight people who together have to protect the great tree from hordes of monsters. There is noticeably less tactical diversity here, but there were enough of their own strategies and development options. It was always necessary to skillfully distribute damage along the path of opponents, improve buildings in time, correctly group towers in order, on the one hand, to cover as many buildings as possible with the help of auras, and on the other hand, to avoid blind spots.

Green Circle TD

2/2

Green Circle TD

Finding a good match in Green Circle TD was quite difficult, although there were never any problems with the offer. It’s just that the mode was really very dependent on the level of skill and experience of all the participants, because if one of the players began to miss enemies, the whole team suffered from this. And if the misses of the “car” on ordinary waves were not so critical, then the missed boss became a headache for all participants. However, if you found good teammates and developed a strategy not only for yourself, but for the whole team, sharing some of the responsibilities, then playing Green Circle TD turned into a real pleasure.

Footmen Frenzy

Dota 2 is called chess from the world of video games, because it is very difficult to understand it without spending at least a thousand or two hours on it. But at one time, Defense of the Ancients had a competitor that could give odds in terms of hardcore and the number of variables that need to be controlled within one game. This, of course, is about Footmen Frenzy. The general concept (you choose a hero and run to destroy the opponent’s throne together with the creeps) is similar to DotA, with the exception of one significant nuance: the units here are also placed under the control of the player. Therefore, gamers need to not only monitor the development of their own character, but also competently manage the army. The battles in Footmen Frenzy have always been bright, large-scale and dynamic, but the mode required serious micromanagement, which is probably why DotA gained a lot more fans in many ways.

cards. This added even more chaos to the battles. Footmen Frenzy forced to enter into alliances with other players, «signing» acts of non-aggression, joint attacks, and so on. Naturally, all these alliances always ended in insidious betrayals. However, such mind games and attempts to play the cunning politician definitely added spice to the regime.

«Life in the Arena»

The brightest representative of the Arena genre among Warcraft III custom maps. The player’s task is quite simple: choose one hero from dozens and use it to survive as many rounds in the arena as possible. Each next wave of monsters will be bigger and stronger than the previous one, and the growth in the power of enemies is often not always proportional to the development of the character. Therefore, without knowing the strategies and tricks of the regime, it is unlikely that it will be possible to live for a long time. Life in the Arena has countless modifications, versions, and so on, so it’s hard to even describe this custom in more detail, because everyone remembers it in completely different ways — depending on the version they once played. In some modifications, a special bias was made towards team interactions between several users, in others, on the contrary, in addition to the waves of mobs, you had to fight with real people. Life in the Arena spawned not only hundreds of its own copies, but also thousands of other custom cards that tried to repeat its success.

X Hero Siege

X Hero Siege is a popular custom map in the Hero Defense genre. In it, it was necessary, with the help of the hero, together with the allies, to protect something from waves of enemies, which, of course, became stronger with each level. However, unlike many other representatives of the genre, in which the slaughter of mobs quickly turned into a monotonous routine, X Hero Siege really pleased in terms of the variety of gameplay and strategies. In addition to protecting against the usual waves of enemies, the player also had additional challenges.

X Hero Siege was extremely demanding in terms of strategies, builds for the character, and generally forced to understand well how to act for a particular hero during the game. In addition, it was necessary to maintain a balance of healthy selfishness and mutual assistance: sometimes it was worth stealing farm from allies in order to acquire a bear or a new artifact, and in other cases, on the contrary, sacrificing yourself for the sake of a teammate. X Hero Siege has many modifications, and most importantly — difficulty levels. For fans of custom, hardcore modes were released with affixes that literally turned it into a kind of Dark Souls, where every mistake or downed ultimate due to a stun equaled defeat. But thanks to the variety of strategies, heroes and difficulty levels, X Hero Siege retained its replay value.

based on Warcraft III. After all, the fantasy of gamers was almost limitless: from an insane number of anime-style modes to intellectual games like “The Weakest Link”. And among the more familiar modes, there were enough interesting and popular cards that did not fit in this selection, for example, Mumu or Evolution.
