Mario Kart Franchise Retrospective
He doesn’t just jump across the Mushroom Kingdom; he zips across it at over 50ccs. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look back at the Mario Kart franchise.
Most people have grown up playing the mustachioed plumber’s countless adventures. Yet, his exploits behind the wheel have become just as recognizable as his core series. This is not only due to attracting a following through multiplayer mayhem, but providing the first-ever go-cart experience within a console game.
One of the longest running and best-known spinoffs series ever made, Mario Kart debuted in 1992 for the Super Nintendo. Its original 16-bit game “Super Mario Kart” launched the series only one year after the release of the incredibly popular “Super Mario World.”
Due to this, it pitted players against each other as they raced through signature areas from that game. Unsurprisingly, this method of supporting Mario’s latest adventures with four-wheeled counterparts became commonplace, such as in 1997’s Mario Kart 64”, which not only introduced 3D graphics, but 4-player play to the series.
No matter the installment, the games have always had players select from the most popular characters from the Mario universe. Each even featured their own agility and speed traits, and made extensive use power-ups items. These included star power, bananas, mushrooms and the infamous leader-seeking Blue Turtle Shell, which players used to gain the upper hand against their friends and the computer. Of course, certain characters have always been prone to receiving one type of item over another, such as Toad constantly collecting Mushroom speed boosts.
In terms of tracks, Mario Kart has always separated races by unique Cup challenges. These have included such challenges as the Mushroom Cup, Fireflower Cup, Lightening Cup and Star Cup, along with Mirror and Retro Cups. These each contain several courses, while difficulty and skill is further divided by the selectable speed of the vehicle motor, which ranges from 50ccs up to 150ccs.
While there are always new tracks and retro throwbacks, the series is known for featuring regular staples. Among these are beaches, stadiums, Bowser’s Castle and the fall-defying and massive Rainbow Road. Despite the setting, the races have always been intense and close, due in large part to Nintendo’s use of rubber-banding AI enemies. This means that no matter what you throw at them, they’ll usually manage to stay one step behind or ahead of you.
Meanwhile, the racing series has always sported a Ghost mode so players could race themselves, and a thrilling Battle Mode. This includes a balloon challenge, which has players try and pop each other’s three balloons in order to win.
Not just a staple of each and every one of Nintendo’s home consoles since the early 90s, Mario Kart has regularly appeared on their portable systems as well. As a result, the series has felt the need to innovate and make drastic changes in order to keep things fresh. These various gimmicks have ranged from the use of two passenger vehicles in “Mario Kart: Double Dash!!”, to motorcycles in “Mario Kart Wii”, and more recently gliders and submarines in Mario Kart 7. Interestingly, this is in fact the 9th entry in the series if you count its two Namco-led Arcade GP romps.
An iconic series, Mario Kart continues to lead the way for fun on Nintendo platforms, and other companies continue to unsuccessfully mimic its remarkable success and universal appeal.

Mario Kart TV’s logo
Mario Kart TV is the fictional broadcasting system in Mario Kart 8, and the successor to the Mario Kart Channel in Mario Kart Wii. Within the game, the Mario Kart TV feature integrates with Miiverse, allowing players to view and share replay videos of races, which others from around the world can then watch and leave comments on. Players can view highlight reels at any time by choosing the View Highlight Reel option after a race/battle or from the Mario Kart TV menu. While viewing, players can edit their own replay videos by using various options, including slow motion, rewinding, and fast-forwarding, as well as changing the focus of the video to include specific players and actions, as well as the duration of the video. Players can also favorite up to six of their own replays. The videos can also be uploaded to YouTube, if the player has a Google/YouTube account, though they cannot be longer than sixty seconds.
An accompanying web app was also released on May 28, 2014,[1] which allows users to find and view shared highlights posted to Mario Kart TV and YouTube. Users who log in with their Nintendo Network ID are also able to find things that are specific to them.[2] On March 8, 2016, it was announced that the portal site would be closed on April 4.[3]
Nintendo has planned to «send out videos of attractive reels, and hints and tips as official Nintendo videos.»[4]
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also features the ability to show replay videos, but unlike the original, it is no longer possible to upload videos to YouTube.
As of November 7, 2017, it is no longer possible to upload Mario Kart 8 highlight reels onto YouTube, due to the termination of the Miiverse service.
In the game itself, Mario Kart TV is also a sponsor in many courses such as Mario Kart Stadium. There is also a glider based on Mario Kart TV, known as the MKTV Parafoil.
Outside of the Mario Kart series, a Mario Kart TV patch appears on the front of the racing outfit in Super Mario Odyssey, and multiple Mario Kart TV banners appear alongside the Mario Motors and Burning DK banners in the race track area of the World of Light in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In the Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge attraction at Super Nintendo World, the attraction queue passes by a broadcasting truck and studio for Mario Kart TV where Lakitu explains the ride’s interactive components.
A Mario Kart TV truck appears in 3DS Toad Circuit and Wii Coconut Mall in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass.[5]
- The Miis react to events during a replay, such as falling over when a racer gets hit with an item or cheering when a racer crosses the finish line.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit goes on sale tomorrow is an augmented reality game that turns any living room into a race track. Offering an innovative mix of toy and video game, the new Mario Kart comes complete with a Mario or Luigi kart that is controlled remotely via the Switch and drives along a created route right in your home. Up to four players can participate in a race.
The car is equipped with a built-in camera, thanks to which the user sees his room on the console screen as if it were the world of Mario Kart. Players can also use home furnishings as obstacles for more interesting racing track building. But what if you have a pet?
Youtuber from channel Unranked Podcast was already able to get the game and tested it. At first, the cat was interested in Mario’s map and went up to him to sniff, but curiosity did not last long — as soon as the car started moving and began to pursue the pet, the poor man literally could not find a place for himself in the house .
Looks like Mario Kart Live and a pet cat isn’t the best combination to play AR kart.
