Whether returning to Rockstar’s homage to neon excess, or coming to it for the first time, Vice City’s cheats are the perfect way to spice up any playthrough. Sure, you can do the boring stuff—giving yourself full weapons and armour. But you can also cause indiscriminate chaos by spawning tanks and arming pedestrians.

Before you enter GTA: Vice City cheat codes

So you want to use a GTA: Vice City cheat. That’s fine—no judgement here—but there is one important thing to remember: always save before entering a GTA: Vice City cheat, ideally on a separate file. Some cheats can be disabled by re-entering the code. Others will wear off when you quit and restart the game. But some, like the pedestrian riot cheat, are permanent, and can’t be turned off.

The year 2012 was rich for the Grand Theft Auto line in events, announcements and dates. Most of the attention, of course, attracted the future flagship of the game series — the fifth licensed part. However, looking confidently into the future, Rockstar Games does not forget about the glorious past. On October 29, one of the jewels in the crown of not only GTA , but the entire gaming industry as a whole, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City celebrated its tenth birthday.

The developers did not ignore this event, as well as the 10th anniversary of the third part in 2011. As a result, a great gift for fans was the opportunity to relive past experiences with the mobile version of GTA: Vice City 10th Anniversary Edition , ported to modern smartphones and tablets. Also, the creators of the game published a number of materials and interviews on the history of their work on the virtual Miami in the early 2000s.

The president shared his memories with the press Rockstar Games and Game Executive Producer Sam Houser , Head of Rockstar North and Series Producer GTA Leslie Benzies and Artistic Director Rockstar North Aaron Garbut . Sources of inspiration

The idea to use this setting arose long before the start of work not only on Vice City or the «three» that preceded it. Even before the birth of GTA 2 , during the development of the London set of retro missions for the first Grand Theft Auto , the authors conceived the next project to be done in Miami in the 80s of the last century. Then, for one reason or another, it didn’t work out.

Interestingly, even after the release of Grand Theft Auto III , there was initially no talk of a sequel. After spending a few months on the PC port, the team started thinking about things that could be added in the form of a content pack: weapons, vehicles, cool missions — basically everything that they wanted to include in the 3rd part initially, but failed. However, it quickly became clear that there were too many new ideas for an additional set of missions and this should be a separate game.

When the choice of a new location was discussed at the first design meetings, there were so many proposals that very few cities and regions of the Earth were not among the possible contenders. The option of returning the series to London, as well as some other locations, was considered, but Sam insisted on Miami.

And this craze for Florida neon paradise began with the youthful love of brothers Sam and Dan Houser for the American crime drama Scarface, which was released at 1983, and, more importantly, to the television series Miami Vice. The eldest of the brothers even purchased videocassettes of all five seasons with terrible recording quality through eBay before the DVD edition was released.

Since the last days of work on GTA 3 Sam went home during his lunch break and reviewed episodes of his favorite show, imagining how certain moments could be embodied in the game. It was practically the only thing he watched for almost a whole year. And while the game’s story ended up with more of Scarface, the overall tone and atmosphere is Vice City , a huge mass of details and trifles were created with an eye on the popular television series.

Also, according to the memoirs of Aaron Garbut , the developers were inspired by the detailed criminal characters of another crime drama starring Al Pacino — Carlito’s Way.

Difficulties of development

But with such landmarks in front of our eyes, many things still did not come easy Rockstar .

For example, Aaron Garbut saw Miami at night in the TV series and personally visited the Florida resort. He had a good idea of ​​what he wanted to achieve when working on the visual style of neon lighting. However, getting the desired result was very, very difficult.

As the popularity of the previous award-winning title soared, so did the pressure on Rockstar North’s next project, , along with the expectations placed on it. At the same time, the entire development cycle took only about nine months. Although the creation of 3D models for Vice City was already underway at the end of 2001, the actual launch of the project took place in early 2002, and by October the game was already completely ready.

The last weeks of development were a nightmare for a small company at the time. In addition to the aspirations of the players, Vice City had high hopes for the parent corporation — Take-Two . But to release a product not good enough to meet the deadline, the Rockstar also could not afford. At that time Sam Houser thought of nothing but not wanting to let the players down: I think it would be better if they didn’t buy the game at all than be disappointed by it .

The actor invited both Housers and a couple of studio representatives to dinner at one of the oldest Brooklyn steakhouses, distinguished by pretentiousness, the constant lack of free tables and a slightly rude attitude towards visitors. And so four men found themselves in the middle of a crowded restaurant, not having the slightest confidence that they would be received here.

But then Liotta showed up and led the whole party straight to the best table. This had such an inspiring effect on Sam that he literally bombarded the actor with details about their future collaboration and about the game in general. For which he was awarded the characteristic “damn crazy”, which Liotta expressed the next day in a conversation with Dan : God, your brother’s a fucking lunatic .

Still Ray seems to have understood the author’s idea, because, according to Sam , he did an excellent job with his role. The only thing that subsequently overshadowed Houser ‘s impressions of working with a movie star were the actor’s comments about the amount of the fee voiced by agent Liotta . Constantly challenged to strike a balance between challenge and enjoyment of the game, the guys at Rockstar found out on their return visit to Vice City that even they weren’t always very good at it.

While working on the mobile version, the authors reworked several key game mechanics, such as the camera and aiming system, to better adapt them to the target platform. Some missions and gameplay elements have also been changed to make them more accessible. After all, the game was already focused on a different niche: on consoles, people could sit and play GTA for hours, while the new version was intended to brighten up ten free minutes on the way to work.

A mobile game shouldn’t force people to sit on a bus monotonously hoarding money or replay one mind-bending mission 20 times to get ahead. Ideally, upon returning home, the player could say, “Hi! I bought a nightclub and robbed a bank on my way home, how was your day?”

Overall according to Aaron Garbut , mobile Vice City is the best of all existing versions. Based on the original PC game, it has been enhanced with improved Xbox character models and camera controls adapted to the touch screen.

Present and future

Today Aaron Garbut , like many of his colleagues, speaks warmly about the work on Vice City . For him, it was a time of building friendships and developing working relationships with everyone involved in the creation of games Rockstar . Of course, this has always been a common cause, but at first the teams in Edinburgh and New York were rather closed. Only over time, many of the employees became best friends.

As for the game itself, the developers also have a lot of great memories associated with it. How the map of the city was collected and the first trip was made on it; how helicopters and flying over the city appeared in the game; dancers in the club; driving down Ocean Drive at night; tool shop with non-traditional weapons; the player’s first change of clothes; jumping on boats from water jumps; the first car smashed with a hammer; harassment by golf club visitors whose car has just been stolen by a player; first look at the models of the group Love Fist; walking around the city on a moped on the same day they were added to the game … More than ten years have passed, but these and many other moments are still clearly remembered.

GTA: Vice City is now as much a part of our history as the 80s themselves. But will we return to this city in the future? Leslie Benzies is sure that this possibility always exists. In GTA on the current generation of consoles, there are references to Vice City, so the city is part of the HD universe, and the developers would gladly return there. However, the original Vice City , more than any other GTA , depended on the era as much as on the environment. Miami in the 80s is so symbolic that it would be strange to return to this city in any other time period.

Of course, someday in the future, Rockstar would like to create one big world containing all the cities they invented, and give the player the ability to fly between them and revisit favorite places. In this regard, the idea of ​​​​returning Vice City in GTA looks very interesting.
