Here comes the navy

Sega has managed to craft an incredible entry in the long-suffering franchise that is fun, fully-featured, and gorgeous. In a time for the industry where a game like Valkyria Chronicles should struggle to find footing, Sega has proved that this dark horse has many bright years ahead of it.

It adds a handful of new and interesting mechanics to its tactical battles, nearly all of which improve the formula in tangible ways, but otherwise plays it fairly safe.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 stumbles in its narrative, but great characters, a unique aesthetic, and an engaging combat system make for the best game in the franchise since the original.

Exactly the sequel we were hoping for when we finished the original Valkyria Chronicles back in 2008. Deeper, denser and harder, VC4 hits all the right spots for a triumphant return to the home consoles. Only blemish, it plays, feels and looks like 2008, having copied a large amount of assets (and problems) from the original title.

Valkyria Chronicles is considered one of the greatest RPGs of the last generation, so this true sequel coming ten years later always had some lofty expectations to look up to. The combat significantly improves upon the original and RPGamers that value interesting, strategic battles will be extremely pleased with Valkyria Chronicles 4. However, it doesn’t quite manage to emulate the same interesting, thought-provoking plot that dealt with delicate themes in a mature manner. Nevertheless, while the narrative of VC4 doesn’t reach those lofty heights, sixty hours quickly disappeared in the course of playing it. Perhaps that’s more indicative of its quality than comparing it to something it’s not.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 take the series back to its roots for the better. The new E Squad may use the very same twists and stories as the first episode, but the game itself stills delivers a solid war experience somewhere between the tactical genre and the TPS. Unfortunately, only those able to accept its naive manga tone may enjoy this light experience : indeed, the endless and sometimes pointless conversations are a real nightmare.

It went back to its roots by basically an enhanced version of the first game but not enough of an improvement to leave a different mark. TheIt went back to its roots by basically an enhanced version of the first game but not enough of an improvement to leave a different mark. The simplified system for the upgrade of personnel is backward for me since it leaves you with faceless list of characters unlike in 2 or 3 where you can specialized the jobs and equipment of your characters leaving you with tons of options how to tackle the missions.
Still dont like that speed of clearance makes everything moot for the battle result ranking. Its a mechanic that I see in a lot of games but still dislike. It make sense in some scenarios where you go in hard and fast and disappear but there are other scenarios where a tactical approach is more interest but the game punishes you if you use that approach.
Here’s to hoping to an official port or remaster of the 3rd game in the switch.… Expand

Well, wait? Review of Valkyria Chronicles 4
Valkyria Chronicles was once a great success with PlayStation 3 owners. So much so that the game was ported to PC six years later, to PlayStation 4 eight years later, and ten years after the release, the game will appear on Nintendo Switch . In this interval, two more licensed parts came out, but for some reason on a portable console from Sony. Yes, they turned out to be quite good, but the main audience was waiting for the continuation of the history of the alternative World War II on the “large” platforms. With the fourth Valkyria Chronicles, everything is exactly like this: it practically does not differ from the original, but it is just as good as it was ten years ago. nine0003
The Japanese love to create alternative versions of real military conflicts and show how terrible everything was with the help of fantastic characters and unusual locations. There is no need to look far for an example: Hayao Miyazaki has repeatedly touched on anti-war topics in his cartoons. Valkyria Chronicles also pulls off such a trick in this regard. The action takes place in Europe, but its name is slightly different in spelling: Europa instead of the usual Europe. So the Japanese do not need to adhere to historicity, and because of the fictitious names, they cannot be accused of unreliability. Maybe the creators of Battlefield V should have done the same? Then there would be no need to hastily remove the frilly character customization. nine0003
The plot of the fourth part does not continue the original, but tells about events that take place at the same time in another part of Europe. The commander of an elite squad, Claude Wallis, is trying to break through to the imperial capital and put an end to the war. Consider going to Berlin. There are almost no adult characters in the Valkyrie Chronicles that we are used to seeing in domestic military films: the game tells how young boys and girls are trying to influence the course of the war. You need to get used to this: if you are not an anime fan, then it will be extremely difficult for you to adapt to the local surroundings. It’s too specific. But once you get used to it, you won’t be able to break away. nine0003
Valkyria Chronicles 4 takes place in the same time period as the original, so the game is well suited for beginners. Gaul, which was the main setting in the first «Chronicles», is mentioned here only in passing: several characters come from there. You can also find a couple of references here for hardcore fans, but nothing more. This is a completely independent story that can easily do without describing the events of previous games.
But the way of narration remained the same. Young people who have been sent to war and who have to determine the fate of people may not be ready for such a responsibility. Commander Claude Wallis in one moment marvels at the beauty of the flower field, and in a moment he has to decide how to divide the troops in order to successfully repel the enemy attack. At first, the characters may seem simple and stereotypical, but it seems so only at first glance. The history of Valkyria Chronicles 4 is famously twisted, and the characters are revealed from an unexpected side. nine0003
As in the original, the fourth «Chronicles» has a lot of cutscenes with dialogues that are made in a specific and Japanese way: an animated character avatar and subtitles, like in any novel. Perhaps this is one of the traditions of Japanese game development and developers simply do not want to abandon it in favor of technological videos. But in 2018, in a game with a big budget, this looks strange: just imagine if the cutscenes of Metal Gear Solid V were the same as in the original. Although, in general terms, Valkyria Chronicles 4 has become much prettier: the signature “drawn” style shows very beautiful landscapes. And composer Hitoshi Sakimoto, who had a hand in a huge number of Japanese video games, wrote a very touching soundtrack. nine0003
The action component has not changed in general terms. Select a character on the tactical map and move it until you run out of turn points. Something like XCOM, only with a third-person view and no squares to move. In this case, you can not walk all the characters in turn, but spend commander points on only one. The changes are in the little things: for example, the new grenadier class allows you to throw grenades at enemies, bypassing obstacles. It seems to be not too big an innovation, but the style of fighting with such a guy in the squad can be very different. Especially if you are used to running from the flanks or vice versa, to sit behind shelters. nine0003
The rest of the changes are small but nice: the commander can call for artillery support, and before dying, the character can raise the morale of the rest of the squad or stand up for the last shot. These are small changes, but they add more variety and force you to rebuild in each encounter.
Fights seem easy at first, but that feeling quickly wears off. Each skirmish in Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a puzzle that is incredibly difficult to complete without loss. At the same time, the tactics that helped you win the last fight will not work at all in the next one, and you will have to carefully study the battle map in the hope of finding some kind of passage that was previously inaccessible. Sometimes it will be infuriating, but each victory brings incredible pleasure. nine0003
Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a great return of the series from handheld devices to «big» platforms. In many ways, it plays exactly like the original, but that’s for the best. The last time SEGA tried to do something with this universe was Valkyria Revolution. Thank you, but the time-tested set of mechanics suits us perfectly.

Game Description
« That war was our youth »
Plot
«The scene is fictional Europe, namely the entire western part of the vast continent of the northern hemisphere. This is a land on which wars have been taking place since ancient times in order to unite it. nine0003
1800, Europe was divided into two great western and eastern powers — the «Eastern European Autocratic Alliance» with the center of control in the Imperial capital, as well as the Union of Republics «Atlantic Federation», which renounced the power of the Empire. In the end, both powers entered into a conflict, which was caused by the places where the Ragnit mineral was mined.
In 1935, the tension in the world reached its peak and the Imperial army, violating the non-aggression pact, began its offensive on the lands of the Federation. As a result, the largest-scale war in history “Second European War” broke out, which engulfed all of Europe. nine0003
Cloud, who participates in the war as commander of Platoon E on the side of the Federation, at the beginning of the war managed to win a difficult victory against the invaders. However, after three months, the Federation army, which was forced to constantly retreat due to the superior forces of the Empire, found itself in a difficult situation. After the battle, Cloud returned to the base and was informed by the higher authorities of the start of a large-scale operation, the purpose of which is to capture the capital of the Empire, seize the initiative, and launch a large-scale counteroffensive «Operation Northern Cross». nine0003
