USB Soundcard Tests | George Smart – M1GEO

This page is the work of Sabine Cremer, DL1DBC. After exchanging lots of emails regarding RaspberryPi WSPR for her Medium Wave WSPR Monitor in JO41bi to try and get a USB soundcard that didn’t make the WSPR application crash, Sabine conduced some very extensive research into USB soundcards, which she has very kindly allowed me to reproduce here, along with her source code:

The source code, written in C, and based on the ALSA API tests sound cards for number of channels and sample rates, etc. The code was used to find some of the data presented below. The code is entirely the work of Sabine Cremer, DL1DBC, but is again hosted here with kind permission.

BeagleBone Black: Ubuntu Precise 12.04.3 LTS; Openbox window manager; soundcard connected to DELOCK USB hub together with keyboard and mouse.

Raspberry Pi: Raspbian Wheezy; Openbox window manager, LXDE desktop; soundcard connected to upper root usb connector; keyboard and mouse connected to DELOCK USB hub

WSPR 4. 0 r3015 compiled on Raspberry Pi and copied to BeagleBone Black

Originally these results were sent in Excel format, so I have converted the spreadsheet into a table. Click for a bigger picture. WSPR version 4.0 r3015 used as test software.

Heutzutage befindet sich in nahezu jedem System ein integrierter Soundchip für die Wiedergabe von Musik oder Filmen. Doch die Leistung der internen Lösungen ist meist nicht ausreichend für Musikproduzenten und Audiophile. Wer im Besitz einer starken Stereo- oder Surround-Anlage ist, sollte nicht an der falschen Stelle sparen. In den letzten Jahren hat sich in dem Bereich einiges getan und mittlerweile gibt es eine große Auswahl von externen Soundkarten, auf die man zurückgreifen kann.

Wie werden externe Soundkarten in Tests geprüft?

In den inzwischen rar gesäten Tests spielt die Audioqualität eine tragende Rolle. So prüfte die Redaktion der PC Games Hardware in einem Test von internen Soundkarten die Testkandidaten mit der Benchmark-Software Rightmark Audio Analyzer und bewertete dabei den Frequenzverlauf, also wie linear und unverfälscht der Klang wiedergegeben wird. Hinzu kamen Aspekte wie der Rauschabstand sowie eine Messung, ob Störgeräusche vorhanden sind. Ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt in Vergleichstests ist das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Denn gerade bei Soundkarten achten viele auf faire Preise, da nur wenige bereit sind, hunderte Euro in einen solchen Zusatz zu investieren.

Anwendungsgebiete

Externe Soundkarten lassen sich in verschiedenen Anwendungsgebieten einsetzen. So eignen sie sich primär für Notebooks, da diesen in der Regel die Möglichkeit fehlt, den intern verbauten Soundchip auszuwechseln oder PCI-Steckkarten zu verbauen. Die Oberklasse der externen USB-Soundkarten eignet sich dank exzellenter Klangwiedergabe für Musikproduzenten. Besondere Features wie optische Aus- und Eingänge und vergoldete Anschlüsse sollen die Klangqualität zusätzlich positiv beeinflussen. Für den Filmgenuss und Gaming sind dedizierte externe Soundkarten wiederum nicht allzu wichtig, da die internen Soundlösungen auf der Hauptplatine heutzutage bereits einen guten Qualitätsstandard liefern. Hier lohnt sich eher die Investition in ein gutes Headset.

Anbindung & Vorteile

Externe Soundkarten stecken in kleinen Gehäusen und werden in der Regel über eine USB-Schnittstelle angebunden. Dies hat mehrere Vorteile gegenüber einer internen Lösung. Zum einen muss nach der Anschaffung nicht extra der Computer geöffnet werden und der eingesparte PC-Steckplatz kann für andere Erweiterungskarten genutzt werden. Hinzu kommt die bessere Erreichbarkeit der Anschlüsse. Man muss nicht hinter den Computer kriechen, sondern kann die Kabel beispielsweise direkt auf dem Schreibtisch anschließen. Dieses Anwendungsszenario hat jedoch auch seine Nachteile, da ein Stellplatz benötigt wird und die Technik nicht einfach im Rechner verschwinden kann. Nicht zu vergessen ist auch die schnelle Installation über die Schnittstelle. Die meisten Modelle werden umgehend vom System erkannt und eingerichtet. Ältere Systeme können von dieser Lösung profitieren, da so der interne Prozessor entlastet wird und mehr Leistung für andere Aufgaben zur Verfügung stehen.

Dieser Umstand lässt sich durch den Einsatz eines USB-Sticks mit internem Audio-Chip beheben. Er ist klein, lässt sich einfach anschließen und noch leichter transportieren. Natürlich darf man von dieser Lösung nicht die gleiche Soundqualität und Anschlussvielfalt erwarten wie bei einem großen Modell. In der Regel besitzen sie je einen Anschluss für ein Mikrofon und einen Kopfhörer und eigenen sich damit vor allem für Internettelefonie über ein Headset. Die Soundausgabe ist ausreichend für Office-Anwendungen und einfachen Stereo-Klang.

Advantages: 5. 1 + headphone and microphone output, many outputs for various equipment. good sound, ergonomic

Disadvantages: on the subwoofer channel, the sound card itself separates the bottom from other frequencies, there is no equalizer in the sound settings. I have been using it for more than 3 years and there is no desire to change it, I often work with music myself and everything suits me in this sound system. For non-professional use, so to speak for yourself, an excellent choice!

Advantages: I can’t single out any advantages among the external sounds, it’s just an unremarkable device.

Disadvantages: I have been sitting on XP for the second year because, despite the assurances of the manufacturer, only two channels with this sound system work in the seven, and they are not going to release firewood, they explain this by saying that everything works on the seven anyway. Oddly enough, on the test, the sound comes from all channels, but there is no other way to hear the sound from the other channels — movies, music, games — there are only two channels everywhere. nine0003

Comment: It’s better to get confused, find the same sound system released, which is called «Windows 7 Ready», with firewood for the seven. Otherwise, you will have to choose which of your four active systems is better to connect.
