Turtle Beach Atlas One Review
Turtle Beach’s Atlas line of gaming headsets is aimed specifically at PC gamers, but at this point the distinction seems academic. If you have a wired headset with a 3.5mm connector, especially if it comes with an extension cable or adapter that terminates in two 3.5mm connectors, you can use it with any computer, mobile device, or modern game system. The Atlas One is the most affordable of Turtle Beach’s new PC (and everything else) gaming headsets, with a $49.95 price that makes it half as expensive as the high-end Elite Atlas and a quarter as expensive as the Elite Pro Tournament Headset. It doesn’t offer the same incredibly plush build or audio clarity as these pricier models, but for a budget headset it’s a very comfortable and functional option.
Simple But Comfortable
The Atlas One looks and feels simple and low-key. The headset is black plastic, with the earcups and headband alternating between a flat matte finish and a smooth, faux-carbon fiber. The large, over-ear memory foam earpads are covered in soft leatherette, which helps detract from the light plastic making the headset feel slightly cheap, and provides a very comfortable fit against the ears and around the head. The earpads feature a slightly softer strip of foam against the temples, to reduce pressure on glasses. Despite the unassuming aesthetics, the Atlas One feels very comfortable.
The boom mic sits on the left earcup, mounted on an inflexible arm made from the same plastic as the rest of the headset, flipping down when in use and up against the earcup when not. A volume dial sits on the back edge of the left earcup, and the permanently attached 40-inch headset cable extends from the bottom edge of the same side and terminates in a 3.5mm four-pole plug. The right earcup has no notable features.
Besides the headset itself, the Atlas One comes with a long extender cable that terminates in two 3.5mm three-pole plugs, for connecting to a desktop computer with headphone and microphone ports.
No carrying pouch or other accessory is included.

Music Performance
You can’t expect too much musical clarity or power in a $50 headset, but the Atlas One performs admirably. It handles our bass test track, The Knife’s «Silent Shout,» with an appreciable amount of low frequency response, and at maximum (and unsafe) volume levels doesn’t distort.
It won’t quite rattle your head or give subwoofer amounts of rumble, but it makes a good effort.

While it provides generous low-end, the Atlas One doesn’t offer much high frequency finesse. The opening acoustic guitar notes of Yes’ «Roundabout» sound slightly hollow and brittle, lacking much string texture. The electric bass comes through full and clear, but the high-hat and guitar strums get somewhat lost against the lower frequency elements of the mix. The rain-like vinyl texture in Massive Attack’s «Teardrop» also sounds a bit muffled against the drums and piano, and the vocals lack much edge to make them stand out against the rest of the track.
Game Performance
Overwatch sounds good on the Atlas One, which keeps enough high-mid and high frequency presence to make tactically important sound effects and dialogue stand out against the game’s bombastic soundtrack.
Explosions sound full and powerful without being head-rattling, and more subtle sounds like reloading and ally voice clips stand out in the middle of combat. The higher frequency sounds don’t have quite the finesse or clarity we’ve heard in the Elite Atlas, but you still get a fairly balanced, satisfying sound.
Doom (2016) also sounds loud and full, though it similarly lacks the deep low end to give the booming, thumping soundtrack and sound effects palpable force. There’s plenty of presence from the low-mids to the high-mids, keeping the game from sounding hollow or flimsy, but there isn’t enough power in the extreme lows and highs to provide significant force or texture.
Voice Performance
For a fixed-arm mic on a $50 headset, the Atlas One captures surprisingly clean audio. I found that the boom position put the mic at a nearly ideal distance from my mouth, and test recordings sounded very clear considering all factors.
It is susceptible to slight low-level fuzz that keeps voices from sounding truly crisp like on the Elite Atlas, but it keeps sibilance to a minimum. We wouldn’t recommend this headset for podcasts (we tend to recommend dedicated microphones), but it’s good enough for any voice chat.
Affordable and Functional
The Turtle Beach Atlas One is a functional, comfortable wired gaming headset you can pick up for a very reasonable $50. It’s well-made and easy to wear, and its microphone sounds very good for the price. It can’t produce very booming lows or really crisp highs, which is understandable considering how inexpensive it is. The Astro Gaming A10 offers superior audio for just $10 more, though it isn’t quite as plush or as comfortable as the Atlas One. The A10 is our current favorite, but the Kingston HyperX Cloud Stinger is another strong $50 pick, comparable with the Atlas One in build and performance. If you can spend a bit more, the Logitech G Pro and the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas offer better overall sound and very solid builds for around $100 each.

For a long time on my desktop (like half of the country’s population) there was a splash screen: palm trees, white sand and turquoise water. As it turned out, this is a real place — the Seychelles. And now I see this picture live. Yes, rest here was not cheap (from 100 thousand rubles per person for seven days). But at least once in a lifetime it is worth visiting a real paradise.
You can fly to the Seychelles at any time of the year, here it is always 25-30 degrees Celsius and there are no monsoon rains.
With a visa, everything is simple — it is not needed, there is a visa-free regime on the islands. I flew on a flight Moscow-Dubai-Mahe (the capital of the Seychelles) of the Emirates company.
Mahe Island
Seychelles Airport is located on Mahe Island, the largest of the 115 islands in the archipelago. The capital of the state, Victoria, is also located here. The city can be walked up and down in half an hour. So, after walking along the main street of Palm Street to the intersection with the main attraction — a small copy of London’s Big Ben, I go by taxi to my hotel.
The H Resort Beau Vallon Beach Beau Vallon Beach
The five-star The H Resort Beau Vallon Beach is located on the best beach in Mahe — Beau Vallon. Booking.com rated the hotel as «excellent» for its green grounds, helpful staff and «one step to the sea» location. From myself I will add that it is worth stopping here at least for the sake of a morning cup of coffee overlooking the ocean from the restaurant.
What to do on Beau Vallon? Never get up early! You’re on vacation. And in the Seychelles, even at noon, the beaches are deserted and you can find a place for a “heavenly” selfie (and don’t say that you are not here for this). The hotel staff will move your bamboo lounger under the most spreading palm tree (they serve as sun umbrellas here). By the way, both the sunbed and its movements are absolutely free. As well as various water activities from the hotel. You can take a kayak and sail into the open ocean, or you can do stand-up paddleboarding on a surfboard. It is completely safe, as there are no waves and large marine life here at all.
Another Zen-style activity is walking along the beach, which is one and a half kilometers long. You just need to put on sunscreen well, otherwise you can get burns like me. Walking around, I found a fruit market and local food. Here they sell freshly caught grilled fish for 60 Seychelles rupees (about 200 rubles, which is unheard of cheap by local standards).
For comparison: a serving of ice cream in a cafe on the beach cost me 350 rupees (which is 1500 rubles).
An active evening can be spent dancing in one of Victoria’s clubs (15 minutes walk from the hotel). And you can be lazy, like me, with a glass of prosecco in the lobby with live Creole music.
La Digue Island
The Seychelles are mostly small secluded islands. So I decided to go to a smaller island — La Digue. It is famous for the most photographed beach in the world and a park with huge turtles. You can get there by ferry with a change on Praslin Island in 2.5 hours (1,000 rupees, or 4,500 rubles one way) or in style by helicopter in 20 minutes and for $ 1,000.
The size of La Digue is about three by four kilometers. So upon arrival at the port, like most tourists, I rented the most popular transport — a bicycle (160 rupees, or 700 rubles per day).
It is impossible to get lost — the cycle path encircles the island in a circle, and there are signs everywhere.
The first on my way was Petite Anse beach with huge ocean waves. Swimming is dangerous here because of the strong current, but you can run with a buzz in the waves near the shore.
One of the main attractions of the island is the Union Estate Park with a huge granite rock and an enclosure with giant turtles (entry 100 rupees, or 400 rubles). Here you can feed these «dinosaurs» with leaves, which are brought in armfuls by park workers. And I met the turtles themselves all over the island, they lie quietly in the shade under the bushes along the bike paths or walk slowly along the beaches.
Passing through the park, you find yourself on the most famous beach in the world — Anse Source d’Argent. It is his photograph that serves as a screen saver for many as the personification of a heavenly place. It takes great pictures from anywhere. Smooth rocks, clear turquoise water, green palm trees — unreal beauty. But it is best to go here early in the morning, because during the day the number of tourists rolls over.
Every step in the Seychelles comes across a symbol that is very similar to the most famous body part of Kim Kardashian (37). Even a visa in your passport will be put in the form of a “fifth point”. This is not a hot Creole temperament, but a symbol of the islands — the fruit of the unique Coco de Mer palm tree, which grows only here.
When you leave, besides the golden tan and the sea of impressions, don’t forget to grab a souvenir from the islands in the form of Coco de Mer and local coconut rum (300 rupees, or 1300 rubles), which will warm you on cool evenings.

Adult sea turtles find their way to the beaches they were born on almost unerringly thanks to their ability to sense the Earth’s magnetic field and remember magnetic «photos» of these coastal «maternity hospitals,» biologists say in an article published in the journal Current Biology.
The earth is surrounded by a relatively constant magnetic field, but only a few living beings are able to «see» it and use it for orientation in space. These include the vast majority of migratory birds, some flying insects, as well as certain species of sea turtles and bacteria. In July 2011, biologists found «biocompass» genes in human DNA and proved their performance by successfully transplanting them into the Drosophila fly’s genome. However, they do not participate in the work of the human body.
Roger Brothers and Kenneth Lohmann of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA) have been trying for years to uncover the secrets of how big-headed sea turtles (Caretta caretta) find their way to beaches where they were born, often overcoming thousands of kilometers on the way to them.
In February 2011, they succeeded in explaining one of the questions that had tormented biologists and oceanologists since the discovery of the «biocompass» in the body of these marine reptiles — how can they determine the longitude of the point in which they are, despite the fact that the strength of the magnetic the Earth’s field does not contain such information.
It turned out that big-headed turtles can sense not only the «density» of magnetic field lines, but also their inclination with respect to the surface of the planet, which allows reptiles to keep in their heads a kind of magnetic map, each point on the surface of which has its own unique magnetic appearance.
This discovery answered the question of how turtles find their way to the «maternity hospital», but did not explain how they manage to choose the same beach where their mother laid her eggs. In their new article, Brothers and Lohmann found the answer to this question by following how the behavior of loggerhead turtles changes during those seasons when the planet’s magnetic field experienced small changes.
«We hypothesized that if turtles use the magnetic field to find beaches, then periodic fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field could affect where they lay their eggs,» explains Brothers, quoted by the university press service.
With this idea in mind, oceanographers turned to Florida State Conservation Services, home to the world’s largest colonies of these marine reptiles.
Their archives contain information about where the turtles laid their eggs and which beaches and their parts have been the most popular among them in the last 19 years. This allowed Brothers and Lohmann to understand whether fluctuations in the magnetic field influenced the choice of expectant mothers.
It turned out that this was indeed the case — even small changes in the strength of the magnetic field and in the direction of its lines in certain parts of Florida led to serious changes in the preferences of turtles.
According to scientists, reptiles literally remember what the magnetic field looks like at the point where they were born, and use this magnetic «photo» to find a place to lay their eggs when they return to the beach. This is supported by the fact that the turtles “moved” mainly to those corners of the beach or to other “maternity hospitals” that were very similar in their magnetic properties to their birthplace.
