Why aren’t Transformers games on Steam?

Oh, how it pains me to say this. If you felt you could have waited an eternity to get around to playing Fall of Cybertron, War For Cybertron or Devastation, that trypticon of broadly well-received, Activision-published Transformers third-person shooters, I’ve got bad news.

Here’s a hint: they’ve been removed from Steam, plus all other digital marketplaces — as have subsequent and worse sequels. This is bad comedy.

The issue is that robots in disguise toy-makers Hasbro and Activision couldn’t deal with that right now. For the past decade, the house of Kotick has been publishing Transformers games, most of which were associated with the beryllium baloney of the Michael Bay movies, but a handful of which did their own thing.

By far the most ambitious result of the arrangement was 2015’s animation-styled combo-brawler Transformers: Devastation, developed by no less than Bayonetta and Nier: Automata studio Platinum (though handled by a different arm of the company). That said, High Moon’s 2012 Fall For Cybertron, follow-up to the more forgettable War of Cybertron, was arguably made of sterner stuff overall.

In a mockery of justice, the licensing deal is now terminated — which is why all Activision Transformers games, also including 2014’s uncharismatic bore Rise of the Dark Spark, disappeared from Steam, PSN et al a few weeks back. Hasbro have confirmed to IGN that the point is the deal’s dead and the games died with it, but stopped short of saying what, if any, future for Transformers games there is. With the most recent movie having comparatively struggled at the box office, perhaps their bargaining posture is highly dubious.

This has happened with other licensed Activision games in the past — look to the absence of such heroic nonsense as Deadpool, Spider-Man and Turtles games on Steam, similarly removed due to a lapsed contract. In Deadpool’s case, it did make a reappearance for a while when a contract was renewed, but recently we witnessed its dismemberment once again.

The good news is that, if you already own any of the Transformers games on Steam, they still function. If you never grabbed the (mostly cosmetic) DLC, I fear the wounds are fatal, however — I have the base games but not the DLC, and can’t access store pages for the add-ons. If you never got around to the games in the first place, the only way to light your darkest hour is to pick up a physical copy. All you need is a little money and a lot of luck on eBay.

Frankly though, I’ve got better things to do tonight than play largely forgettable action games that never truly realised either the scale of giant robots or the pleasing engineering of transformation.

With Paramount Pictures currently looking to semi-reboot the movie series, no matter the cost, after last year’s so-bad-it’s-almost-avant-garde Transformers: The Last Knight, maybe Hasbro will offer the universal greeting to either Activision or a different publisher to make more games. Arise, Ubisoft Prime?

Major faults of transformers

Major faults of transformers, leading to their failure, can be in the form of a winding wire break, broken contact in connections and soldering, reduced insulation resistance and mechanical damage.

Breakage of the winding wire of a large cross-section of the transformer is unlikely, thin wires (up to 1 mm in diameter) usually break, the cause of this transformer malfunction is the mechanical forces applied to the wire during winding and during assembly of the core, but the most likely is the corrosion of a thin wire due to electrolysis. A winding break is detected when checking the operation of the transformer. There will be no voltage on the faulty winding. The fact that a break has occurred can be verified by measuring the resistance of the winding or calling it with a probe. nine0005

One of the main faults of the transformer is broken contacts in the connections and soldering occurs due to poor-quality cleaning and tinning of the contact surfaces, as well as due to insufficiently tight fit. In these cases, the contact surface is oxidized and the electrical connection is broken.

If the contact is not completely broken, its resistance increases and the current through the winding decreases. In the event of a complete breakdown of the contact, the circuit will break, and the current will not flow through the transformer winding. In some cases, a place of poor contact is found by checking for heating, by touching soldering and terminals, which is done immediately after disconnecting the device from the mains, or by measuring the voltage before and after connection (terminals, soldering). The leakage current of low-frequency transformers leads to a change in the mode of operation of these and other elements of the device, and as a result, the quality of sound reproduction decreases.

Major transformer faults that cause leakage current can be detected by measuring the insulation resistance between the windings and relative to the core of the magnetic circuit. It goes without saying that during these measurements, loads of any kind must be disconnected from the windings. nine0005

Insulation breakdown . Since, due to atmospheric conditions, not only the insulation resistance decreases, but also its electrical strength, insulation breakdown may occur between the windings and on the core of the transformer or inductor. This fault is detected during operation by checking the voltage on the windings. In the event of a breakdown of the insulation of power transformers, protection is triggered. The electrical strength of the windings is checked with disconnected loads and a disconnected network with an inductor megohmmeter or test voltage. nine0005

Insulation breakdown of the winding wire in some cases leads to the formation of short-circuited turns, which causes overheating of the windings of power transformers, and in low-frequency ones — to a significant deterioration in the quality of the amplifying device.

One of the main faults of the transformer is also mechanical damage , that is, breakage of clamps, petals, cheeks of the frame. They are due to careless handling, and the weakening of the core tie is due to poor assembly. Mechanical damage is detected when examining the external state of the part. nine0005

Transformer failures sometimes lead to a complete failure of the device (amplifier or rectifier), and in some cases only to a decrease in the quality of its work. So, in the presence of short-circuited turns in the output transformer, the sound quality deteriorates significantly, but the operation of the amplifier does not stop. Such a transformer failure is difficult to detect. Therefore, regardless of the nature of the malfunction of the device received for repair, it is subject to a thorough check.
