Total War Battles: SHOGUN
Even though I don’t really care about the enhanced visuals (or the doubling of the game’s size. ..), it is nice knowing that SEGA has updated this one and that it’ll work into the future (at least until it disappears or an OS update breaks it). It is a fantastic strategic lane battling game. Actually, it’s probably my favorite, and one of the deepest available in the AppStore ATM. While I understand loads of people were upset that this wasn’t an ‘actual’ Total War game — I’m very glad that we have this available to us as, as I said, it’s probably one of the deepest lane battling games on mobile right now, 2-3 years after this was released… not a bad entry if ya ask me. =oP
Here’s hoping SEGA keeps up with more of their older mobile titles (I know they can’t keep them all updated and current, but there are a few I’d love to see get updated/fixed), especially their paid titles… anywho… THANK YOU SEGA…
Favorite Strategy Apps
I very, very rarely review apps but TWB:Shogun is just incredible. The entire storyline is extremely well made and fun(not quite finished yet myself), and the graphics and engine are on a tier of their own for mobile. Sometimes troops fight slightly better or worse, and one of my most memorable moments so far, was an entire army at my doorstep, but the tiny surviving samurai from an earlier attack continued carving through the enemy’s defense and xpeked the general before mine died. While there are minor bugs and unfortunately no multiplayer other than local, such features would only bump it to 6/7 stars from 5. Worth every cent.
A Must Have!!!
Best undiscovered app in the store!!! Play it! Buy it!!! Support Sega and Creative Assembly on this one! So much fun and a brilliantly unique real time strategy with lots of options. Incredible graphics, Risk on an octagon Chess board. BTW, this is my first ever review. Please share with friends we need more games like this. I don’t work in video games but I am an author. My wish is they re-skin this for a pirates, Knights orAmerican Revolution. Baller status game!!!… (just downloaded this on my new iPad; CA, please re-skin for Empire Total War)

Funny and accessible casual game is inspired by the famous and popular strategy series. Only disadvantages are chaotic controls. [Nov 2012]

Total War Battles: Shogun may have very little in common with its hugely respected relatives back in the Total War stable, but it represents a cheap foray into a new market for the team at The Creative Assembly, and there’s nothing wrong with that at all.

Total War Battles is not a real RTS, but an extended tower defense game. It has nothing in common with his «big brothers». Recommended only if you are a real fan of the brand.

It feels painfully slow on the PC, and the controls are better-suited for a mobile touchscreen than a mouse and keyboard combo. It even manages to lose a feature in the translation, which is stunning given how much more powerful the PC is than, say, the iPad. Throw in the fact that it has little to nothing to do with the series proper, and it becomes impossible to recommend this spinoff, even to the most dedicated Total War fans.

I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t the turn-based game that I was expecting, but the core gameplay mechanic (build resources and recruit troops) is strong. I wish they had upgraded some feature when moving from touchpad to PC, specifically the fact that there are no interactive menus and that maps are all very small. Additionally, there are a few «puzzle» missions where you have to build structures, but you only have a limited amount of space and several restrictions. My biggest frustration with the game was that the puzzle missions were tedious and took me longer than any single battle. Nothing about this game really feels epic, but if you like the Waring States Era and are looking for some casual gaming, I highly recommend you try Total War Battles: SHOGUN.… Expand

The game takes place in Japan during the Sengoku-jidai period, a period of instability between XV — and XVII — . The country is then torn apart by rivalries between daimyo, warlords trying to conquer the country and become its shogun.

game system
Shogun: Total War is a strategy video game where the goal is to conquer medieval Japan and become its shogun. To do this, the player can turn to strength, as well as religion and diplomacy. The game mixes turn-based strategy stages in which the player manages the various provinces under his control and moves his armies, with real-time tactical combat phases taking place on specific battlefields.
The strategic phases take place on a campaign map shared between seven playable factions representing historical Japanese clans and non-playable factions: the rebels and ronin. At the start of the game, each clan controls a certain number of provinces according to their historical base. Thus, the islands of Kyushu and southwestern Honshu are the possessions of the Shimazu, Mōri and Takeda clans, the center of Honshu is controlled by the Oda and Imagawa clans, and the north is occupied by the Uesugi and Hojo clans. In addition to the territories they control, clans differ in specifics, which gives them advantages in certain areas. Thus, the Imagawa clan’s spies are more effective, while the Takeda clan has more powerful cavalry units than the other factions.
nine0003
Strategic phase
The main campaign of Shogun: Total War allows the player to choose one of the playable factions in the game that they should then lead to conquer medieval Japan. Each clan initially controls a certain number of historical provinces, each province has a castle and a port if it is adjacent to the sea. On the campaign map, the player controls the construction of buildings and the recruitment and movement of their armies and agents. on the map, his goal is to defend his provinces and conquer new ones. To do this, the player can use force, as well as use diplomacy and economics, as well as backdoors such as espionage or assassination. The campaign mode is played on a turn-based basis, with each turn representing a season and allowing the player to perform all actions related to their faction before allowing the game’s AI to control the other factions present on the campaign map. After four turns, a year passes, and the daimyo and his sons grow old. The player must ensure that at least one clan member survives, because if a daimyō dies of old age as a result of battle or seppuku and has no heir to replace him, the game is lost.
nine0003
In order to develop, the player must collect coca through three buildings — rice fields, ports and mines — which allow him to earn income from taxes collected in the provinces and trade with neighboring provinces. Koku then allows him to build buildings in the provinces he controls, recruit units, or upgrade his castle to unlock more complex structures. In addition to the buildings that affect the economy of the province, the player has access to many military buildings, which allows him to unlock new types of units. Different types of military units have strengths and weaknesses and are common to different factions, while some units have certain characteristics depending on the clan they belong to. In addition to armed troops, the player can also hire non-military units — agents that can operate on the campaign map. Thus, three types of agents are available: emissaries, spies, and assassins. Emissaries can be used to perform diplomatic tasks, such as signing an alliance between two factions or bribing an enemy army. For their part, spies can gather information about opposing provinces or characters, and assassins can try to kill an enemy general or unit.
nine0003
The people of each province are distinguished by their loyalty to the daimo. If the latter increases taxes, the loyalty of his people decreases, and if he lowers taxes, builds a Shinto shrine, or moves his army to a province, it increases. When a province’s loyalty falls below a certain threshold, the population revolts and a group of rebels and rōnin take over the province, forcing the player to fight them to maintain control of their territory. The religion of the daimyo and the people also affects their loyalty, with a province with a different religion than the daimyo tending to be less loyal to the latter.
nine0003
During the game, many events can affect a province, all provinces controlled by the player, or all of Japan. An unfavorable climate for crops or a natural disaster affects, for example, the annual income of the affected provinces. For their part, the arrival of Europeans in Japan in 1540 affected all players, who then had to choose whether they wanted to trade with the Portuguese or, later, with the Dutch in order to obtain firearms. Trade with Portugal, however, required conversion to Christianity, a conversion that affected all the provinces of the daimyo and made possible the building of churches. The church helps convert people to Christianity faster and allows you to create a Jesuit priest who does a job similar to that of an emissary. After placing six churches on the territory that includes the citadel, you can build a cathedral. This allows you to collect tithes from the population that converted to Christianity.
nine0003
Combat phase
Combat phases take place on a battlefield represented in three dimensions. Here, two armies fight in real time until one of them is defeated or re-released. These combat phases are triggered when the player or AI moves their army into a province belonging to the opposing faction, after which the player has the option to play the combat or let the computer determine it automatically. Before the start of the battle, the attacked army can freely choose the location of its army on the battlefield. For their part, the attackers can choose the moment of attack, and therefore the weather conditions, as well as the general formation of the army.
nine0003
During battle, each player controls an army of various types of units inspired by medieval Japan, including but not limited to foot soldiers armed with spears, horsemen, archers, and samurai or arquebusiers. Each type of unit has advantages and disadvantages that the player must take advantage of in order to achieve victory. As such, infantrymen are very effective against cavalry, but their slowness and light armor make them particularly vulnerable against archers. To gain a tactical advantage, players can also use the terrain to their advantage and assign formations to their troops that are appropriate for the situation. During battle, units gain experience called «honor», which allows them to become more effective as they advance. Units are also characterized by their morale, which increases when the battle goes in their favor and decreases in difficult situations. In the event of heavy casualties, morale can drop so low that units are put on the run, and the player then has to call on their general to try and rally them so they can keep fighting. In fact, broken units can be captured and then returned in exchange for a ransom, while generals can be exchanged for higher ransoms. Sieges are also an important aspect of in-game combat, triggered when the player decides to attack an army entrenched in a province’s castle. The attacker must then find a way to break through the castle’s defenses before engaging in combat and defeating the enemy army.
nine0003
Interface
During the strategic phase, most of the screen is taken up by a map representing Japan and its provinces, on which the player controls the provinces he controls, as well as the movements of his armies and agents. In the upper left corner is what is commonly referred to as the mini-map, which corresponds to a map of all of Japan, highlighting the territories controlled by each player.

Game Modes
Full Campaign is the main game mode in which the player tries to conquer Japan. In it, the player can choose their clan, difficulty level, and campaign start date before starting the game. In addition to the main campaign, the game also offers a game mode that focuses only on the tactical combat phases and allows the player to control a predetermined army during a historical battle, such as the clash between the forces of Shingen Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi. at 4- m Battle of Kawanakajima. Finally, a personalized battle mode allows the player to create their own battles by choosing the location, weather conditions, difficulty, as well as the composition of the armies of each camp. The game also features a multiplayer mode where up to seven players can compete in real time on the battlefield. In it, players can choose their faction and create an army, which they can then use to face other players in LAN or Internet battles.
nine0003
Development
The development of Shogun: Total War was announced in early 1999. Creative Assembly was then under contract to Electronic Arts, for whom they developed games for their EA Sports sector. However, the studio wants to create a second development team to work on an alternative project that poses a small risk from a financial point of view. Influenced by the growing success of Command and Conquer , a new team led by Michael Simpson decides to create a real-time strategy game. As development progresses, the growing popularity of 3DFX graphics cards is pushing the studio to change tactics and move to 3D rather than 2D as originally planned. At first, Michael Simpson, skeptical of the value of this change, went along with the idea when the team managed to create a 3D environment suitable for gameplay. Since then, the studio’s strategy has changed, and the project, originally considered a secondary project, has become increasingly important. The developers then change the game’s viewing angle from a classic top-down view to a view in which the player observes the battlefield through the eyes of their general, thereby significantly changing the gameplay by limiting the player’s viewing distance. To accompany this change, the designers decided to give the game a more realistic approach, drawing inspiration from historical reality to design units and tactics. Despite these improvements, the game still lacks substance: the developers find the real-time battles to be too short and feel that something more is needed to tie them together and make them meaningful. They then present the campaign map to give the player a broader strategic perspective and context for real-time battles. They then agree on a plot inspired by medieval Japan, more specifically the Sengoku period. This era is indeed considered interesting, although it has an advantage, as it offers many factions that could win the war, and many important changes, such as the arrival of Europeans and gunpowder. To ensure some degree of authenticity, the studio then approached Stephen Turnbull, a historian who specializes in samurai battles. They also inspired movie jidaigek from Akira Kurosawa and include elements of Art of War by Sun Tzu in the game’s artificial intelligence to make the behavior of computer-controlled players more authentic.

The game benefited from an expansion developed by The Creative Assembly and published by Electronic Arts at in North America and in Europe. Titled «The Mongol Invasion» , it notably includes a new campaign that traces a fictional version of the Mongol invasions of Japan between 1274 and 1281, during which the fleet under Kublai Khan’s command was not caught in a storm. In it, the player can choose to play as Mongols or Japanese. The expansion also includes a new game mode, Historical Campaigns, which allows the player to take on the role of a historical figure during a series of encounters recounting historical events in medieval Japan, such as the young Nobunaga Oda’s attempt to unify Japan. nine0005 «Mongol Invasion» also adds new victory conditions, new features and a new building — Improvement Dojo — to increase the maneuverability and organization of units created in the province.

Riding on the success of Shogun: Total War , The Creative Assembly announces the development of an expansion whose new campaign focuses on a fictional invasion of Japan by the Mongols. The latter was published by Electronic Arts in August 2001 and, like the original game, enjoyed some critical success. The studio then proceeded to develop a new title Transposing the game system in Shogun in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East during the medieval period from 1087 to 1453. Named Medieval: Total War , celle-CI was released in August 2002 to even greater critical and commercial success than its predecessor. The studio then continued to build on the series’ success by adapting its concept to new historical periods, including antiquity and the Napoleonic Wars. They are also developing a sequel to Shogun , dubbed Total War: Shogun 2 , covering the same historical period as the original game but capitalizing on the improvements made to previous entries in the series. This one was released by Sega on and used two extensions.
