The best zombie games on PC 2022
What are the best zombie games on PC in 2022? You can hardly take a step on Steam without these clutching at your ankle, so it’s a valid question.
Luckily, our list of dead-good hits has everything a zombie enthusiast could ask for, ranging from simulation-style management games, to co-op games that are more Lovecraftian period pieces. If you like, you can take a shambling detour through tower defense games and post-apocalypse parkour. Popular culture’s fascination with the undead has given us many gifts – and many memes – so you must get your bearings and know where to find the best zombie games out there on PC. Come with us now to find the ones worth playing right now as we wade through the hordes of shambling corpses.
These are the best zombie games on PC in 2022:
State of Survival
State of Survival is a game that’s very obviously been influenced by The Walking Dead, with many things (from character tropes through to the soundtrack) that will be familiar to fans of the franchise. Also Daryl is in it. Nonetheless, if you’ve ever thought that you’d like the experience of taking care of a group of survivors in that world, then this is a game that you should definitely take for a spin.
The gameplay takes several different forms. You’ll spend a lot of your time managing your base and making sure that you’ve got enough resources and that you’ve trained enough people to be able to fight against the zombies. Then there are tower defence-style battles where you have to deploy your people, along with turrets and other weapons, to stop an advancing horde of the undead. Finally, there are overworld battles, where you see your units go up against zombies (or even other players). It all comes together to provide a zombie game that’s as nuanced and tactical as it is atmospheric.

Resident Evil 2
It was a long time coming, but the Resident Evil 2 remake delivers on fan expectations in a big way. Opting for an over-the-shoulder perspective rather than the fixed camera angles of the original, it faithfully recreates the classic horror game’s iconic police station and other spine-tingling areas filled to the brim with zombies waiting to eat your face off.
Of course, there’s also the constant spectre of Mr. X stomping around like he owns the place, or the hideous monstrosity lurking in the sewers keeps you on your toes. It’s the best of the classic Resident Evil games, and since future games such as Resident Evil Village shamble away from undead people as their main enemies, it’s one of the best Resident Evil games with zombies in.
Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War
Honestly, you could elect any of Treyarch’s Call of Duty games to this list, because their zombie horde modes are the best around. Black Ops 4 had an excellent good zombies mode, but we’ve singled out Black Ops Cold War because it’s a nice entry point for those who’ve not played this mode before. It just so happens that the rest of the game is a thrilling FPS game overall.
It also has a fresh story, great tutorials, and easter eggs galore. The original map is also much easier for the classic survival modes. There are still tons to sink your teeth into, and the reception from those who have played it has been more positive than prior instalments.
Back 4 Blood
Those looking for a game similar to Left 4 Dead may find a lot to enjoy with Back 4 Blood. While it initially had a rocky launch, balance patches and updates have made Back 4 Blood’s campaign a worthy entry. You can upgrade the playable characters, known as Cleaners, by equipping cards to buff their skills or give them more uses for healing items.
All the while, though, the ‘Game Director’ constantly adjusts the difficulty level based on your team’s performance, introducing new threats. Since its release, there have been two expansions, each with new playable characters, weapons, and chapters for your team of Cleaners to wade through.
Project Zomboid
“This is how you died,” Project Zomboid tells you as you walk gingerly into the overrun American countryside for the first time, as you get the sense that this is not going to end well. However, you can at least drag out the inevitable for some time – eking out an isometric existence through the shrewd scavenging, food sourcing, and first aid skills you will have honed well from the best survival games.
The entire map is open, and guidance is minimal – only good preparation and a tab open to the Zomboid wiki can save you. Once you have established a domestic base, the game becomes a matter of tense smash and grabs, weighing up potential loot against the chance of zombie encounters. Long-term survival means rebuilding rural America – constructing and maintaining farms and adopting a defensive playstyle.
Where most zombie games are about hitting the dead with something weighty before moving onto heavier artillery, Zomboid is about avoidance, careful management, and slow-burn strategy. Speaking of a slow burn, Zomboid has been in open development for nearly half a decade – so see what we make of it in our Project Zomboid Early Access review. But do not be put off by the Early Access tag: this is one of the richest zombie games in existence.
Days Gone
Days Gone is a zombie game for those who feel that experiences such as Dead Rising need a more open-world focus. It starts rather slowly, with the motorcycle-riding protagonist scavenging from ravaged roads of the Cascade region, but soon revs up to become a rather intense experience. While most zombie games lose their threat as soon as you find a vehicle, the Freakers in Days Gone are more inclined to recklessly leap at you as you speed along the debris-ridden roads, and before too long, you’ll have to contend with hordes of zombified humans and animals. If that doesn’t sell you, how about the prospect of fending off zombie bears?
DayZ
Despite stretching supporter’s patience to breaking point with its arguable abuse of the Early Access concept, there is more than enough to standalone DayZ to remind you why the mod garnered all that goodwill.
You will still endure that nervy survival phase, flitting from greenhouse to gas station in an effort to gather gear and avoid conflict – DayZ is one of those simulation games where the ravenous undead are not what haunts your every step. You will still have those Cormac McCarthy moments on the road, scanning a stranger for clues as to their intentions. Once you are subsisting on soda and scraps, however, DayZ opens up. That greenhouse becomes a proper farming plot. It is enough to keep you and passing traders alive.
Banditry is no longer DayZ’s default – there is potential for trading centres, large-scale farms, and stable villages. Unfortunately, we are a few updates away from the post-societal civilised dream, and over time the bugs and performance issues can chomp away at your enthusiasm. But DayZ is not just a survival sim anymore – it’s also a living sim.
State of Decay 2
If you’re looking for a compelling story, you’re better served by the original State of Decay. However, the sequel does an admirable job of fleshing out the first game’s systems to make for a more satisfying survival / open-world game.
Playing like an RPG, State of Decay 2 has a simple yet satisfying core loop. You will pick a protagonist from your community of survivors and take them out into the wild to find the necessary food, fuel, or drugs to keep the rest alive. Once they collapse into bed back home – or under the blows of the undead – you can take control of another character from your base with their own background, personality, and combat abilities.

Whenever you choose to let another stranger into your growing base, you are letting in another playable character; another new story to write a middle and an end to. We can’t wait to see what State of Decay 3 is like.
Killing Floor 2
One of the best co-op games on PC – apart from Left 4 Dead 2 – Killing Floor 2 is a chaotic, frantic rush as you blow out undead brains to rambunctious heavy metal.
Zombies of all shapes and sizes come at you thick and fast, making Killing Floor 2 an excellent pick-up-and-play co-op title. But as you devote more time to indulging in a spot of zombie bashing, Killing Floor 2 becomes a zombie game with an engrossing tactical element: do you spend your blood-soaked resources now, or save them for a tougher future confrontation?
Killing Floor 2’s gameplay, most importantly, feels great to play as a wonderfully gory shooter with friends – its best mechanic is a post-launch addition that has made things even better.
Dying Light 2: Stay Human
Techland built on the runaway – shuffle-away? – success of Dead Island with Dying Light – another open-world zombie game kitted out with customisable melee weapons and four-player co-op. Then the studio (eventually) gave us Dying Light 2, and we couldn’t be happier.
The excellent parkour system sets Dying Light 2 apart from its rivals. Already decent in the first game, it’s living its best unlife in Dying Light 2. While this open-world RPG game is not without its problems, it’s still off to a strong start and easily earns a place as one of the best zombie games of the past year.
Like its survivors in a post-outbreak world, Dying Light 2 is a scavenger. Its map icons and diversions are ripped from the Ubisoft formula. The parkour is nicked from Mirror’s Edge. But the clambering informs every other aspect of the game, turning this into an explorative, emergent adventure. For best results, ignore the more repetitive missions and take to the rooftops, built with vertical meandering in mind.
Organ Trail
This zombie game homage to the most famous old game game of all time is tough as nails. Organ Trail tasks you with guiding a station wagon of survivors on a journey out west, and like all zombie survival games, your primary concerns are keeping a good stock of food, medicine, and ammo, not to mention avoiding roaming packs of flesh-eating undead.
The real stars of Organ Trail are the random events encounters, which will continue to catch you off guard hours into the game with everything from zombie boss fights and gangs of raiders, to your survivors contracting diseases or receiving curious jobs from strangers. In Organ Trail, you’re always on the back foot, managing your party’s gradual descent into illness and hysteria one horrific encounter at a time, but every fight you manage to scrape through feels like a herculean accomplishment, and it’s that feeling that drives your feeble station wagon onward.
Left 4 Dead 2
It’s been thirteen years, but Left 4 Dead 2 is economical in the way Valve shooters are. That means that unlike many zombie games, it has aged well – despite the lack of any fancy, physically-based rendering or global illumination. It is a zombie game that certainly has not been bettered, even when compared to differently-themed siblings Vermintide and the two Payday crime games.
While some post-apocalyptic scenarios default to a familiar version of zombie-dom we have long been desensitised to, Left 4 Dead 2 presents a world in which normality is all too recent. Though cities have emptied out after waves of evacuations, humanity feels close enough to touch thanks to the messages scrawled on the walls of safe houses. There is a unique warmth here, too: the cultural influence of New Orleans and its environs seeps from the swamps to the streets and into the soundtrack.
The Walking Dead
Telltale’s The Walking Dead series is best described as a conversation system tied to a timer, inspired by social anxiety. There’s a sense of interpersonal warmth framed by overarching gloom, like a campfire on a cold night. It frequently attempts to disarm you with humour and half an hour of respite before swiping cruelly at the characters you have come to care about in a way that only the best adventure games on PC can. Those evil geniuses.
It is something we would like to see from more zombie games: The Walking Dead is not really about the walkers. They are merely the backdrop for a series of stories about human nature. The key characters here are capable of both great kindnesses and unforgivable evils in the name of protecting their own. The only reassurance is found at the end of each episode when you get to see what percentage of fellow players made the same terrible compromises as you. You’ll have plenty such agonising decisions to make by the time it comes round to finale, but The Walking Dead: The Final season is the series at its best.
Atom Zombie Smasher
Atom Zombie Smasher is one of the very few zombie games going for the big picture. It puts you in charge of the city of Nuevo Aires’ defence forces and tasks you with saving as many citizens as you can. From your top-down perspective, you call in rescue helicopters, direct sniper teams, and make monstrous sacrifices to achieve your goal.
Your goal for most maps is simple: airvac as many citizens as possible. You tell your helicopters where to land, place your marine teams, and set up explosives. Then, when you hit start, zombies flood in from different entrances around the level. If a zombie reaches a civilian, they are instantly infected, and all too quickly, a city block can become swamped with undead.
Sometimes you have to cut your losses. Every time you put up a game-saving blockade, you are inevitably trapping some of your charges on the wrong side. The distanced top-down perspective – which casts yellow dots as civvies and pink ones as zombs – encourages distanced utilitarianism. You are not Francis, Bill, Zoey, or Louis this time – you are the military dropping bombs on their heads.
Unturned
For those looking for zombie games on a budget, there’s always the free PC game Unturned. Here you’ll find a world filled with items to loot, a large map to explore, and many blocky-looking zombies. Constant updates ensure that it remains somewhat fresh, even if the core gameplay is similar to DayZ.
It may not be the most realistic survival game out there, but it’s much more accessible thanks to the simple concept of surviving for as long as possible. Unturned is at its best when you’re patrolling the zombie-infested streets with a few trustworthy buddies.
There you have it, the best zombie games on PC. For more 100% authoritative lists, check out some of the best police games on PC, and maybe even this list of excellent strategy games as well.

In this article we will be rating the top 15 zombie survival games which you can jump into right now. We will be looking at new games, as well as classics in this genre, that get you ready to strap up your boots and head right into the midst of a hoard, wielding a machete or a bat lathered with barbed wire.
We will be ranking these games from fun to most fun, number 15 will be fun, while number 1 will be the most fun zombie survivor game to play right now.
15: Dead Rising 2 (2010)
At number 15 is the memorable Dead Rising 2, a sequel which brought us back into the early days of crafting everyday items into weapons fit to slaughter mountains of zombies at once.
This game is certainly nostalgic, and the franchise set the bar high for the semi open world of zombie slaying to become the next great genre of games. Sure there have been better games since its release, but it will forever stand as one of the greatest of its time.
It’s set in a Las Vegas resort known as Fortune City. Chuck Greene, a former motocross champion, was in the city when an outbreak occurred and he must battle through a multitude of zombies and weird bosses, all while trying to secure medicine for his infected daughter.
The game is full of endless fun, as you craft together items such as boxing gloves and knives to turn yourself into a modern day Freddie Krueger. Not to be missed if you enjoy the original zombie survivor games.
Bears got your back in Dead Rising 2
14: Unturned (2014)
Next up on our list is Unturned, a zombie survival game created by a sixteen year old, set in the zombie infested ruins of a broken society.
The game features both multiplayer and single player modes, and has gained praise for its ability to keep players entertained for endless hours as they slay intense hordes of zombies.
The arena game mode for multiplayer spawns you in the middle of the map with limited supplies and a few weapons scattered close by. It acts like a zombie version of the fortnite battle royal and is incredibly popular.
The whole squad ready to slay zombies
13: Dead Rising 3
When Dead Rising 3 was created, it showed us how zombie games could evolve on the next generation systems, and it did a fairly good job bringing in the new age of zombie slaying. You’re welcomed to Los Perdidos, 10 years after the events of Fortune city, and you’re let loose in one of the best open world zombie maps of recent years, full of stunning views permitted by the next gen graphics.
The gameplay is intense, yet very fun, as huge hordes of zombies can take over your screen at any one time. This was done to show off the potential power of the next gen consoles. Drive through these hoards with ease as you try to escape before the military blows the entire city to smithereens.
The weapon crafting is some of the best we have ever seen in a zombie survival game, receiving an extreme upgrade in quality from Dead Rising 2. Hundreds of weapons are ready to be crafted and used in your zombie slaying arsenal.
A Zombie hoard fit for a King Slayer
12: Project Zomboid (2013)
Number 12 on our list is a great zombie survival game known as Project Zomeboid. The game is often compared to a zombified version of the well adored Sims franchise , yet this one packs a little more action. It provides one question, how would you like to die?
In this classic you are tasked with making sure your character keeps a check on his hunger, water and sleep cycles, while trying not to become the next meal for a zombie. You build defenses simply to delay the inevitable death that’s coming for you.
The game is a fun play, and a proper representation of a hardcore sandbox game with a foucs on realsitic survial. You’ll have to deal with boredom, depression, hunger, thirst, and illness, all while trying to survive the oncoming hordes of zombies.
Can you hold back the hordes, or will you become tonights dinner?
11: Night of the Dead (2020)
Night of the Dead is a great open world zombie game, similar in aspects to the rewound DayZ, as it requires you to make fortified defenses to hold back horde after horde of flesh eating zombies.
The premise of the game has a character known as Lucy, who awakens from a human experiment to find herself trapped in a city full of zombies. She must survive night after night, as she communicates with a group of survivors to escape from the isolated area.
The game keeps players interested as you farm and hunt for food, build fortresses and defend yourself against hordes, all while collecting items, weapons and costumes as you search the house. The level of crafting has also received great praise from audiences.
A base worthy of holding back the undead hordes
10: Dysmantle (2020)
Coming in at number 10 we have Dysmantle, a great survival game which brings you into a world where you can explore, fish, and above all else build a base strong enough to keep out the dead.
As you ascend from your shelter after many years, a new world awaits you on the other side. A world which is now inhabited by nasty and horrendous creatures who want you as their dinner. No other humans are to be seen, and nature now holds the reins in this emphatic game.
The game has received praise for the ability to break around 99% of the objects for supplies if you have the correct tool, along with the building, crafting, hunting, cooking and farming aspects, gamers can stay entertained for days in this thrilling survival game.
A quick pit stop between slaying hordes of the undead
9: DayZ (2018)
Number 9 on our list, DayZ, originally started out as a mod for ARMA2, that became so popular with fans it received its own game, a game which has but one rule in essence, stay alive no matter what you have to do.
In the game you are tasked with surviving in the post soviet republic of Chernarus, a place where a virus has infected a large portion of the population. Here survivors themselves double cross each other just to stay alive.
The game is a complex and authentic survival game, offering the player the ability to hunt, craft, and build, all while trying to manage health preservation. Its huge open map offers a variety of beautiful landscapes as well as landmarks based on historical locations.
The game has no checkpoints or saves, so when you eventually succumb to the zombies, you must start from scratch. This adds a nice level of awareness to the game, one which keeps players entertained for hours on end.
A dog is a mans best friend, especially when there are no men left.
8: Dead Island Definate edition
Dead Island Definate Edition comes in at number 8 on our list. It is a game which has often been quoted as the zombie apocalypse of a lifetime, with the graphics being more beautiful than ever. You are caught in the midst of an epic zombie outbreak on the tropical island of Banoi. The only motivation you have is to survive, as you smash skulls and limbs of the dead with quality melee combat.
Explore the island for all it has to offer, from the deserted city, the silent beaches, and the open highlands, it’s a map that has something for everyone. You feel the destruction, the horror and the madness as you immerse yourself into this game.
It remains one of the best zombie games ever released in terms of multiplayer, which gives the option of a 4 player story mode, set in one of the best open world zombie maps of all time.
Hey batter, hey batter, hey batter, swing
7: Scum (2018)
Next on our list we have the well received Scum, a game centered around a prison break in a post apocalyptic world, where some would suggest staying inside the prison, as mutated monsters and zombies await all those who venture too far.
You’ll need to hunt the world for supplies and medicine, all while trying to stop other survivors from taking your gathered belongings. The human aspect feels realistic as your calories, health and other stats are tracked through a BCU monitor in game.
The game provides four interesting attributes including, strength, dexterity, constitution and intelligence. These help players to create an avatar which falls in line with their specific playing style.
The combat aspect depends on the player’s skill level, but is also affected by the BCU monitor. In true survival fashion, wetness, medicine, cooking, hacking, crafting and hunting all play a major role in the game, giving us one of the most realistic and modernized zombie survival games of recent years.
Save bullets and slaughter the undead with an axe in Scum
6: Strange Brigade (2018)
Strange Brigade comes in at number 6 on our list, a game set in the 1930s when a long forgotten ancient witch queen rises from her tomb in Egypt, along with her obedient zombie monsters to try and take over the world.
You will play as one of four well trained agents who aim to tackle the undead supernatural forces of the game. You can unleash fierce magical powers and powerful weapons such as the fire spitting Krakatoa on any who get in your way.
You explore through ruins, solive enigmatic puzzles, and find treasure, all while you blast your way through hordes of undead enemies in this thrilling survival game. It’s certain to bring out the wanderlust in you.
The game includes a campaign full of activities, including dangerous dig sites, amazing pyramids, and caves which leave you in a state of awe, all while sending undead foe after foe back to where they came from. The multiplayer aspect of this game has intrigued many gamers, so why not park up with your friends and take on the evil queen of ancient Egypt in a game that provides countless hours of exciting gaming.
Team slaying is a great pass time
5: Days gone (2019)
At number 5 we have Days Gone, a game which lets you ride around on a motorbike and take out horde after horde of zombies, that sounds like a day well spent.
The game is an open world survival game set in a harsh wilderness two years after a global pandemic decimated the population of the world. You step into the shoes of a former outlaw, Deacon John, who tries to find reason to live in a land surrounded by the dead.
You will scavenge through abandoned settlements for equipment to craft items of value and deadly weapons to help you on your way. You can also interact with survivors who you can trade with, yet sometimes they would rather just take without asking.
The open world transferred on a motorbike is authentic and envirogating. As you travel through snow covered plains, forests and peaked mountains, you’ll explore caves, mines, and rural towns, there’s something all gamers can find worthy of doing in this game.
You can easily lose yourself in this compelling story of a man who feels betrayal and regret as he searches for hope after suffering a deep personal loss. This game brings out the inner human in all of us.
Zombies aren’t your only problem in Days Gone
4: 7 Days to Die (2013)
At number 4 we have the memorable 7 Days to Die, a game that has stayed relevant for almost a decade. It’s a survival game which takes place in the aftermath of a third world war that is now overrun with zombies.
7 Days is a game that helped define the survival genre, with unrivaled crafting of its time and world building content unmatched in its day. It’s a unique combination of a survival horror, first person shooter, tower defense and RPG.
It presents authentic combat, looting, exploration and promotes the growth of your character, in a way that has kept fans engaged for years. You explore through unique biomes, handcraft and repair a multitude of weapons, design and build forts to suit your playing style, and all of this can be done in multiplayer mode as you work together to stop the zombies coming to claim you.
There are endless skills to be mastered under five main attributes, and you can gain additional skills from reading books. The level of growth in this game promotes it as one of the best RPG games of its time.
A makeshift lightsaber is a sure way to slay hordes of zombies
3: Dying Light (2015)
Number three on our list is none other than Dying Light, a zombie survival game created by the masterminds behind such titles as Dead Island and Call of Juarez.
In this classic you are dropped into a city destroyed and overrun by a zombie virus, and instantly you are bitten. Come to discover the choices you will have to make in order to survive, without letting up your secret.
The game has a vast open world as you use parkour to scale the rooftops, steering clear when you can of the thousands of walking dead who wish to claim you as their new brother.
The combat is engaging and gory, with endless combinations to be made out of everyday items, you’ll be sure to be entertained for endless hours as you slay your way through the Middle Eastern city of Harran.
The day and night cycle give the game a realistic feeling as you change from the hunter during the day, to the hunted at night thanks to a special kind of zombie which can scare even the most fanatic of horror game players the first time it’s seen.
So why not join up with your friends as this game boasts a fantastic co-op scene and helps the protagonist push to save the survivors before the military decides to blow the city sky high in this epic new age zombie survival game.
Nothing like a good old baseball bat to defend to take the head off your enemies
2: State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition
The runner up in our most fun zombie survival games article is none other than state of decay 2, a game which is slightly different from others on this list, as it is mainly a survival game where the zombies take the back seat.
It’s a game set in an enigmatic open world, just after a zombie apocalypse. Your small community of survivors seek to rebuild a small portion of civilization to help humanity survive the horrendous plague which has torn through the world.
The premise of the game is very entertaining as you decide who to recruit to your team, where to settle your people and how to fortify and upgrade the house. You can send survivors on supply runs for items such as food and ammo, with the latter being used to fight off zombies attacking your base.
Each player’s experience is unique in its own way, as they have their own special set of skills and traits, so no two communities are ever the same. The challenges also vary in each game based on which survivors you recruit, making it a game that can be enjoyed over and over again.
The fun doesn’t stop there, as with co-op mode you can visit your friends’ communities and help them if they get stuck in a tough spot, or, just enjoy their accomplishments, with the ability to bring back rewards to your own community is also included.
All things considered this is up there with one of the best survival games of the present era, and certainly a game you won’t want to miss out on.
A big gun will take down a bigger zombie
1: Dying Light 2 Stay Human

The game takes place 20 years after the events of the prequel, where Crane and the survivors managed to survive a bombing by the government, but ultimately lost the fight against the virus, as humanity has fallen back into the dark ages.

Top 20 best zombie games
Classic zombies have been in the entertainment industry for a very long time. For several decades, these disgusting monsters have appeared in TV shows, Hollywood films and low-cost tapes from independent directors. And they also enjoy huge attention in video games, and a wide variety of genres: from action and shooters to strategies. We have collected some of the most interesting titles dedicated to zombies.
Resident Evil
The original Resident Evil came out on 1996 and had a huge effect on the entire gaming industry. It popularized the horror genre and laid the foundation for the multi-million dollar franchise that almost every gamer knows about today. In the first Resident Evil, the player finds himself in an abandoned mansion in the middle of the forest, along the corridors of which the living dead and other evil spirits roam. In addition to their destruction, the user will have to solve puzzles and look for various caches.
In 2002, Capcom released a remaster of the game with more modern graphics. Now it can be purchased on almost every platform.
Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse
Most zombie titles focus on killing monsters. Sometimes the dead are just the backdrop for the plot, but not in Stubbs the Zombie. In this game, the whole story is dedicated to one specific zombie — it is he who acts as the main character. The plot at the same time still came out very romantic, because the main goal is to find a surviving lover.
This is an old third-person action game, but it has some interesting mechanics. For example, Stubbs can rip his arm off and send it down a ventilation shaft to catch enemies off guard, at which point the player will be able to control the limb. Well, Stubbs the Zombie is also notable for the fact that in it you have to eat brains, a lot of brains!
Dead Island
In Dead Island, the player finds himself on a beautiful tropical island with snow-white beaches embraced by the scorching sun. However, he will not be able to drink cocktails and admire girls in bikinis all day long: at the same moment, an epidemic will begin on the archipelago, and its entire population will turn into zombies.
A small team of four survivors is available to the user. The main goal is to find other survivors, find out where the infection came from, and get out of the god damned place somewhere far away. In terms of gameplay, this is a first-person action game with mostly close combat and the inviting ability to cut off a zombie’s head with a paddle.
Lollipop Chainsaw
Speaking of girls in bikinis and zombies, willy-nilly, you remember another unusual title on this subject — Lollipop Chainsaw. This is a third-person action game with hordes of the walking dead as the main opponents. But the protagonist is not some brave warrior, but a pretty cheerleader Juliet in a miniskirt.
Gameplay is similar to Devil May Cry, but with less focus on combos and more on the main character. Watching Juliet deftly jump around the arena and saw through the zombies with a chainsaw is hardly comparable pleasure.
Dying Light
Dying Light takes place in the fictional city of Harran in the Middle East. For unknown reasons, the metropolis was flooded with zombies, and all the surviving people, able to run fast and hold weapons in their hands, came out to fight them. A key feature of Dying Light is the parkour mechanics, thanks to which the game is very similar to Mirror’s Edge, but in a completely different scenery.
You really have to do parkour, because there are so many zombies on the streets that there is literally nowhere for an apple to fall. Their behavior is also affected by the time of day — it is dynamic in Dying Light: during the day, the dead peacefully scurry between houses and behave aggressively only if the player decides to pass right in front of their noses. But at night it’s better not to stick your head out on the street at all: zombies become many times more aggressive, and new dangerous individuals appear among them.
Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2
Valve was one of the first to offer players a completely new zombie gameplay — fast and aggressive. In the vast majority of titles prior to Left 4 Dead, the dead were slow-moving and mostly served as a means of intimidation rather than direct attack. In Left 4 Dead, they began to rush around the map like athletes on steroids, so the players, having taken control of a squad of survivors, had to not only shoot accurately, but also run fast.
Both parts of the game work according to the same scenario. A company of users chooses a chapter and makes their way through the location, destroying hordes of zombies. Among them there are especially powerful mutants capable of either jumping far or grabbing people with a long tongue. By the way, not only bots, but also live users can play their role in the match — the competitive mode has long supported the shooter in the top of Steam.
World War Z
The developers of World War Z successfully copied the gameplay formula of Left 4 Dead, but made a number of point changes. For example, a full-fledged pumping of the arsenal and abilities of the main characters appeared in the game. This is done for special points that the user earns for completing missions.
The number of zombies in the frame of World War Z is much larger. They gather here in a huge wave of meat and pus, which rushes non-stop through the location. Sometimes monsters even create a kind of living mountains, thanks to which they can climb high ground, which adds tactical depth to the game.
The Walking Dead: The Game
Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead shows the zombie apocalypse from a different angle than previous games in our collection. This is not an epic about the destruction of a crowd of infected people with a shotgun, but the story of ordinary people who find themselves in the very center of the apocalypse, and their main task is not to kill everyone in a row, but to survive and save their loved ones.
The Walking Dead is more like an interactive movie than a classic game. Most of the time, the user follows the cut-scenes and the development of the plot, only occasionally taking part in it directly through QTE. The cornerstone of the game is moral dilemmas and choices that will have to be made many times in each chapter. It depends only on the user how the plot will develop and which characters will live to see the epilogue.
Zombie Army 4: Dead War
The Zombie Army sub-series was a spin-off of the main Rebellion franchise called Sniper Elite. But in 2019, the developers released a separate numbered part, which absorbed ideas from previous games and added something new — as they once did with the zombie mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
There is also pumping and completing quests during the mission, and due to the experience of the developers, a lot of emphasis is placed on sniper rifles. However, other weapons are also missing. The game catches with a variety of opponents — in addition to classic zombies, there are armed mutants, exploding dead and massive bosses.
Dead Rising
For a while, Dead Rising was one of Capcom’s key franchises and sold well. But then something went wrong, and the series fell into decline — there was no continuation of the fourth part for a very long time.
Dead Rising is a third-person action game starring photographer Frank West in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. A key feature of all games in the series is a lot of non-standard weapons that can be used to kill the dead. For example, no one forbids taping two chainsaws to an ordinary mop with adhesive tape, or attaching circular discs to a motorcycle, or stuffing a shopping cart with knives … You can continue for a long time.
DayZ
DayZ entered the heyday of survival games, when every second title challenged gamers to survive in some dangerous conditions. The authors decided to immerse the user in a full-fledged open world, tormented by a zombie apocalypse. Resources are few, survivors even more so. Only the player, his few belongings and the dead. Other survivors can also join the case, who are sometimes much more dangerous than the undead, or, on the contrary, can help you.
The gameplay strives for realism: in DayZ you need to constantly monitor the state of the main character, look for supplies, weapons and clothes. In the game, you can even go fishing or growing vegetables — in general, do everything just to survive the next night.
Killing Floor 2
The Killing Floor series comes from a simple mod for Unreal Tournament. Its authors managed to captivate users with an extensive arsenal, dynamic shootouts and boss battles to a peppy soundtrack. Thanks to the huge community, the appearance of the sequel was not long in coming.
The main thing that distinguishes Killing Floor 2 from its competitors is a huge amount of additional content, which the authors continue to release to this day. However, even if you are not looking for a new game for the year ahead, Killing Floor 2 is great fun for a few evenings with friends.
The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2
The two installments of The Evil Within are the first games released outside of Capcom by the legendary Shinji Mikami. When the game designer left the famous company, he founded his own studio Tango Gameworks and started making games the way he wanted.
In terms of gameplay, both parts of The Evil Within are very reminiscent of Resident Evil 4 — users are waiting for a leisurely exploration of locations for loot, shooting with a camera from behind the shoulder, boss battles and an abundance of non-standard game situations.
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Resident Evil 2 remake was released in early 2018 and became an instant hit. Capcom managed the impossible — to transfer the spirit of a twenty-year-old game to new hardware and introduce an “alien” third-person camera into it. So RE2 turned into a real horror game with fancy graphics, interesting puzzles and solid duration.
Everyone knows how good Resident Evil 2 Remake is, and if you haven’t tried it yet, then you can’t wait any longer to get acquainted.
Resident Evil 3 Remake
But something strange happened with the remake of the third part. The original game was also an offshoot of the plot of the second: the events of the two parts took place at the same time. And it was also quite short — you could literally pass it in two evenings. But I wanted to return to it, mainly because of the ability to make decisions in the course of the plot — after all, this opened the way to new locations.
The remake also removed the variability of the passage, several famous game areas, bosses and even ordinary opponents. What was left was a game on the RE2 Remake engine, only with a different main character, a six-hour story campaign and the ability to make a dash from a zombie attack. Even Nemesis turned out to be very mediocre and scripted, especially in contrast to the Tyrant from the previous part. But this does not make the game bad — it is well suited for those who have gone through RE2 far and wide and want to get more.
Days Gone
The first and last PlayStation 4 exclusive in our selection. The plot of Days Gone is dedicated to an inveterate biker named Deacon St. John, who is trying to survive in the epidemic-ridden United States together with his close friend Boozer, and at the same time find his girlfriend, who was pulled out of the source of infection at the very last moment.
The game is a third person action game with zombie shooting and open world exploration. Not the last role in the life of Deacon is played by his motorcycle — he is a full-fledged second character here, who needs to be groomed and cherished. Otherwise, there is a risk of getting stuck somewhere on the sidelines in the company of wolves, bears or zombies.
They Are Billions
If all zombie games are mostly action games, then with They Are Billions everything is not so expected — this is a top-down strategy game where the player must build a settlement and provide its inhabitants with protection from endless hordes of the dead.
To do this, you have to extract resources, develop technologies and hire various units. The zombies will always add fuel to the fire. There are not just a lot of them, but a lot! The game lives up to its name well — sometimes a real army of the infected gathers on the screen.
State of Decay 2
The sequel to State of Decay continued the ideas of the first part with the development of the settlement of survivors. In management, players are given a small detachment of poor fellows who managed not to catch a dangerous virus and not get into the teeth of zombies. They need to be delivered to a safe place, and then go in search of provisions and other resources that will help in arranging the base.
The gameplay of State of Decay 2 resembles a mixture of Resident Evil 4 and DayZ, but mostly you will spend your time grinding endless resources and experience points. Since the leveling here is slow, it will take a long time to play — and this will surely please many.
Plants vs. Zombies
The cutest game in our selection. This is a mobile representative of the tower defense genre, where your home acts as a base, and the role of «towers» is played by plants that need to be placed on the path of zombies.
