The PlayStation 4 has been available for eight years now, and in that time it has accrued one of the greatest game libraries of any console. From Sony’s own first-party classics to dozens of essential third-party titles, the PS4 has games for every kind of gamer.
Whether you want an intense action-heavy experience or something a bit slower and more somber with a strong story, you can find something you’ll love in the list below. We have 19 of the best PS4 games you can play. If you’re getting a PlayStation for the first time, or you’re trying to catch up on what you might’ve missed, this list is for you.
FromSoftware might be one of the most influential developers of the PS4 generation, and Bloodborne is seen by many as the magnum opus, the pinnacle of Miyazaki’s own brutal vision of action RPGs. Dropping the defensive mechanics that can make Dark Souls a passive game, Bloodborne forces you to dodge and attack with speed, risking it all for those precious moments where you can take the upper hand. One for the masochists that seek serotonin through struggle.
Persona 5 is one of the most stylish and engaging JRPGs ever made, and Persona 5 Royal just beefs that experience up with even more content. More characters, more dialogue, more quests, more activities, and more overall time to fit them into. If this is your first time playing a Persona game, then this will drag you in, unlike anything you’ve played before. If you’ve already gone through Persona 5, then a lot of this 90-hour adventure will feel familiar.
Currently one of the most popular MMOs in the world, Final Fantasy XIV just launched its Endwalker expansion, which has been praised by fans of the game. PS4 is the only console you can play Final Fantasy XIV on, and it is completely up to date with the latest patches and content.
If you’ve had bad experiences with console MMOs in the past, Final Fantasy XIV just might change your mind. You may have also heard that there’s a meaty free trial available? Something to consider once the game allows new account registrations again.
Red Dead Redemption 2 might be the very best Rockstar title (it’s definitely the best cowboy game), and that fact makes it one of the greatest story-driven games ever made by default. With an utterly stunning world and engaging story, it manages to evolve past the open-world chaos of early GTA games and feels entirely fresh. An essential regardless of where you play it.

Sony’s first-party releases throughout the PS4 generation have a certain flavor to them – a lot of third-person action with a bit of shooting – but none of them feel as refined as The Last of Us Part II does. The sequel to what was considered the PS3’s greatest game, The Last of Us Part II is bigger and better in almost every way.
A more intricate story told from multiple perspectives, a detailed and believable world, and an incredibly satisfying, varied combat system that will see you approaching each encounter differently. The quintessential Naughty Dog game, and one of the PS4’s very best.
The Last of Us Part II might be the pinnacle of Naughty Dog’s games, but that does not mean you should overlook Uncharted 4. Nathan Drake’s adventures are far more lighthearted than The Last of Us, which makes for a nice change of pace, and that’s mirrored in the gameplay, as you’ll feel like Indiana Jones as you swing around while gunning down hostile enemies. This feels like a summer blockbuster, in comparison to Ellie and Joel’s haunting indie cinema outings.
The PS2 classic Shadow of the Colossus remains one of that console’s very best games and is often mentioned whenever the “games as art” discourse rears its head. It really is that good. The world is vast but empty and somber.
Each victory comes tinged with a feeling of sadness, and while the goal is achieved at the end, it comes at a hefty cost. The graphics of this remake are some of the best of any game on PS4 and make the world come to life more than ever before. Utterly essential to play once.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the game that put CD Projekt RED on the map, and regardless of what trials and tribulations the studio has gone through since, it doesn’t change the fact that The Witcher 3 is a modern classic, and one of the best Western RPGs ever made. A huge world, countless quests, and a gripping story that quickly gets tied into political intrigue. You don’t need any knowledge of the first two games to jump in, and with Netflix’s The Witcher series on its second season, there has never been a better time to play.
Kratos and Atreus’ journey through a brand new realm completely changed what fans expected from God of War. The classic games are brutal, gory, and action-packed.
This one is still all of those things in the right moments, but feels distinctly more mature, handling each moment with a delicacy and nuance that the original trilogy just never had. Kratos still smashes heads, make no mistake, but when he does so it feels like it has more of a sense of purpose and intent, which is reflected in the more methodical combat. It’s not the most historically accurate game based on the Norse, but it’s definitely the best.
Monster Hunter: World finally opened up the game series that has been a cult favorite for years. The areas are bigger, each engagement is easier to approach, you can call for help any time you feel overwhelmed, and the fights are more thrilling than ever. Monsters will tear through stages and crash through rocks and trees you’re using as cover – this game still has a fairly high barrier to entry and asks a lot of new players, but if any game is going to make you a Monster Hunter die-hard, it’s World, one of the best co-op games around.
Journey is unlike most of the games on this list. Instead of focusing on intense action and shooting, Journey takes you on a, um, journey. The story is told without any dialogue, just hints and cues you can pick up on along the way – the quintessential indie game. First, you make your way through a glistening desert, before climbing a perilous mountain. If you’re lucky you just might make a friend along the way. While Journey isn’t the longest game, it’s certainly one you won’t forget. Perfect for anyone looking to take things more slowly.
The Resident Evil series is iconic, and often seen as the definitive horror game series, making its mark across movies, games, and animation. When it comes to recent entries, Resident Evil 2 might be the very best. A remake of the series’ most celebrated game, Resident Evil 2 brings Raccoon City to life in its dying days. The Police Station might be one of the best video game locations this generation.
Horizon Forbidden West is coming very soon, so now is the perfect time to catch up on Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy’s mission across a post-apocalyptic world with robot dinosaurs is unique and exciting, with environments and enemies that set it apart from most other open-world adventures. Whether you’re shooting apart the vitals of mechanical beasts or slapping them with a weapon, Horizon Zero Dawn remains great from start to finish – and even has a 60fps patch available for anyone playing on a PS5.
This has divided fans of the original Final Fantasy VII more than the Advent Children movie ever did, and that’s really saying something. Love or loathe the concept of it, Final Fantasy VII Remake is gorgeous on PS4, and has a fantastic action battle system that changes with each character you take control of. While this only covers a fraction of Final Fantasy VII‘s plot, Remake moves things in an entirely new direction that should make fans very excited to see what’s in store for the future of this new story.
Spider-Man is one of the most beloved Marvel superheroes, so it’s a relief to say that his open-world action game is a great one. Swinging through the city streets as Peter Parker feels as good as you hoped it would, and that is only beaten by the combat, which sees Spidey swinging around lampposts while lamping enemies around the jaw. It’s chaotic fun, and essential for any fans of the webslinger.
If you want a traditional 2D fighting game experience, then look no further than Street Fighter V. Maligned at launch for a bunch of reasons, professional players say SFV is much better now. With several seasons that added a variety of new characters, stages, music, story scenes, cosmetics, modes, and much more, Street Fighter V is now one of the very best fighting games you can play.
It’s a bit late to get involved in the competitive scene with Capcom Pro Tour winding down, but learning to play a game like Street Fighter is a great experience, and SFV is one of the best places to play.

Realistic racing simulators are all well and good, but it’s easy to miss the classic days of super-fast absurd racers. Wipeout is a fan favorite, and luckily the best Wipeout game was brought to PS4 with Wipeout Omega Collection. This “collection” is actually an all-new game, while also bringing together courses and vehicles from Wipeout HD, Wipeout Fury, and Wipeout 2048.
The physics have been changed and the speed has been altered, but this manages to feel like an authentic Wipeout experience and isn’t something you should miss if you’ve ever been a fan of fast arcade racers like Hydro Thunder and F-Zero. Plus, PlayStation VR headset owners can play the game in virtual reality, driving the speedy cars around the tracks in the first person.
Dreams isn’t technically a game, instead, it’s a game creation tool.
In Dreams you can create all manner of experiences. A short minigame with you voice acting? Totally possible. A Sonic the Hedgehog fan game? Absolutely. A photorealistic English breakfast? Absurdly, yes.
If you’re a creative or you want to introduce a younger gamer to game development, Dreams is an excellent place to start, with a stunning amount of variability. Even if you’re not too creative, you can just browse and enjoy other people’s creations, some of which are simple concept demos or showcases, while others are detailed and engrossing game experiences, all made with the same tools you have at your disposal.
This is still one of the very best horror narrative games you can play on any console. Until Dawn boasts impressive graphics, a great cast of actors, and an interesting story filled with campy 80s horror movie tropes, all packed in a game that follows the entire cast as they explore the mysterious Blackwood Mountain.
This tale involves cursed creatures, revenge, horny young adults, action, and you can absolutely sacrifice much of the cast, if you choose the right options. Though, the best ending can only be obtained by saving every single member of your party. That might take a few attempts.
