May 3, 2022 — On today’s IGN The Fix: Games, Embracer Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal, and a «catalog of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain and more than 50 back-catalog games from Square Enix Holdings» for $300 million dollars.
This news comes shortly after Crystal Dynamics announced it was developing a brand-new Tomb Raider game on Unreal Engine 5. Square Enix has shared some of its reasoning behind the decision to sell Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal to Embracer Group, saying the transaction will allow the company to invest more in the blockchain, AI, and the cloud. PlayStation is hiring a director of corporate development to help identify acquisition opportunities and bolster its collection of first-party studios. Sony is seeking someone with video game expertise and the candidate will not only help find and develop the initial opportunities but also align them with Sony’s overall culture and work process to «drive significant long-term value for the company». Rudeism on Twitter has modded the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Game & Learn Controller to actually work on PC, and they even played Elden Ring with it. Rudeism shared footage of Elden Ring being played with the Fisher-Price toy, which he effectively turned into an Xbox controller.
He also explained a bit about how he modded the controller while leaving many of the toy’s original sounds intact.

On the occasion of the anniversary, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics decided to share previously unseen material related to the franchise. Videos showing off Tomb Raider: Ascension, a canceled game that could have replaced 2013’s Tomb Raider, appeared on the series’ official YouTube channel. Tomb Raider: Ascension (here and below — footage from the videos) Tomb Raider: Ascension was an adventure action game with elements of survival and horror. In terms of general mood, it was more like Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness from 2003: Lara explored gloomy locations and fought monsters, ghosts, and zombies. One of the scenes is inspired by Shadow of The Colossus: the heroine rides a horse through an open area, trying to break away from a huge enemy chasing her. Tomb Raider: Ascension started in 2009year, shortly after the release of Tomb Raider: Underworld. Among the sources of inspiration were Resident Evil and ICO. The creators planned to move the events to a huge island full of ghosts and monsters, add battles on horseback and a child character — a six-year-old girl Izumi endowed with supernatural powers, whom Lara had to accompany.
