Almost a princess.

How is a toad different from a frog. Society news

Marriage songs

Belgorod Victory Park is never quiet: in the daytime it rings with children’s voices and bird trills, and as soon as twilight sets in, Vezolka explodes with the loud qua-quaphony of an invisible orchestra.

“Since toads make a more drawn-out and cooing sound, you are more likely to hear frogs,” suggests Alexander Prisny, professor of the Department of Biology at BelSU .

Toads differ from their pop rivals in that they vocalize not only in the hope of luring the groom.

“In the mating season, the toad makes sharp, inviting sounds like yur-yur-yur. The rest of the time — soft, sonorous trills, similar to the singing of a bird. Sometimes this is how she notifies her relatives that she has found a warm place and invites them to visit, ”the biologist enlightens.

Amphibians ( animals adapted to life on land and in water — ed. ) in our area can be counted on the fingers. Pair of views newts common and comb . Three species green frogs : lake , pond , hybrid . The latter, by the way, spitting on the laws of biology, participates in the reproduction of both lake and pond species.

common spadefoot is hiding in the agricultural fields — when it meets, it runs away, burrowing into the ground. By the characteristic coloring, it is easy to recognize red-bellied toad . 9 people live far from water bodiesfrogs.

Of all the potentially unkissed frog princesses, the tree frog is perhaps the cutest: small, neat, with beady eyes and funny suction cups on its paws that allow it to crawl and jump through the bushes. It was she who served as the prototype for the heroine of the Russian fairy tale. True, in our area it has not been seen for a long time: the nitpick does not like the transformation of landscape design. And if you happen to meet something similar green-jumping, making a crackling-melodious sound — tell the biologists about it. They will rejoice.

And of the toads, we have only two species: gray and green . Moreover, the gray one has also practically disappeared, but the green one is found almost everywhere.

A toad is not a frog

First, toads differ from frogs in the structure of their tongue. During the hunt, the frogs throw out their sticky tongue and glue the prey as if with adhesive tape. And the toads grab it with their mouths in a jump. And if the first ones usually jump fervently (sometimes to 1.5 meters in length), the latter often walk sedately.

Frogs have smoother skin. In the green toad, like in the gray toad, the body is covered with a large number of wart-like tubercles ( parotid ). These bumps are her main weapon. At the moment of alarm, a caustic liquid escapes from them, which instantly discourages the appetite of the predator. But if the amphibian is not squeezed, it does not pose any danger. And it is not toads that are to blame for the appearance of warts, but the papillomavirus transmitted from person to person. So you need to insure against people, not against toads.

And her glands also produce antibacterial mucus , which protects the skin from drying out and various pests. No wonder in Rus’ toads were put in a jug of milk — so it did not spoil longer and remained cool. In reality, toads are one of the most harmless animals on our planet. Their movements are clumsy, and there are no teeth in their mouths. It poses a danger only to the invertebrates that it feeds on.

The eyes of a toad are protruding for a reason . Grasping a gaping booger, she draws in the eyeballs and pushes the victim into the throat with them. She prefers to hunt at dusk — at this time of day, the humidity in the air rises. And before the rain he feels especially comfortable — that’s why he «sings» at the top of his lungs.

«Antifreeze» in the blood

For winter, the toad burrows about half a meter into the ground, having previously accumulated band fat. In Ancient Egypt , she was a symbol of resurrection and was even mummified along with the dead. Probably because some species that live in temperate and cold latitudes, when they go into hibernation, literally turn into a block of ice, and thaw and resurrect in the spring. The fact is that their body produces non-freezing glucose. The liquid in the tissues becomes syrupy from frost, which allows amphibians to survive.

“Our species don’t freeze like that, and none of them are poisonous. True, if you lick a few green toads well, you can easily get an upset stomach, ”Prisny jokes.

In spring, when the ground and water warm up to 7–8° , the toad becomes active. Unlike a frog, he prefers to live in holes, but the offspring tends to be deposited near a reservoir. Interestingly, females choose partners by analyzing their trills (since the timbre of “singing” directly depends on their size). On the shore, she listens for a long time to the discordant chorus of males. Having made a choice, she herself goes to the chosen one: she swims or slaps right at the soloist’s voice and unmistakably finds one approximately equal in size to her.

Garden helper

An ideal «maternity hospital» for a toad would be a stagnant pond overgrown with greenery. And there is a reason for this: newborns feed on the delicate skin of algae. If frogs spawn in a slide, then toads lay it out in the form of a cord, which, due to mucus, keeps on plants. Relatively large tadpoles hatch from these cords, which snakes love to feast on. As soon as the tails dissolve in the offspring and paws grow, they migrate throughout the district, climbing even into private houses.

It’s not worth squealing at the sight of a «trembling creature» — these creatures are very useful for a person. Unlike many insectivorous toads, they easily tolerate polluted habitats such as arable land, where pesticides and fertilizers are used.

“In the 1970s , Americans calculated that one toad on arable land with cultivated plants brings in at least one dollar of profit per year. It is difficult to verify the relevance of the figure today, but the benefits of these hard workers for agriculture are obvious,” says the professor.

This is because the menu of an adult toad includes any possible terrestrial animal. Abroad, they are specially bred to fight garden crop eaters. In our country, toads do not receive such close attention, and therefore they live an average of three to five years, although in captivity their life span sometimes increases two to three times .

A symbol of wealth

Toads in our folklore got, perhaps, the most. Not only were they disparagingly called reptiles, but they also assigned the role of a symbol of ugliness and greed, attributed to the department of evil spirits. Not a single witch’s potion could do without their paws. And if, among other reptiles, the snake still somehow aroused fear and respect, then the toad always got only disgust. How the “Frog Princess” was born with such a reputation is completely incomprehensible.

But if we dig deeper into history, we will see how in many mythological tales a frog/toad holds the Earth on its back. Chronicles describe her as a unique animal capable of living in two elements at once. Many rituals are associated with the toad as a symbol of fertility.

Egyptian beliefs endowed frogs with the qualities of spontaneous generation, linking the amphibian with the afterlife. In Japan , the toad is associated with wealth and prosperity — its figurines are still placed in every wealthy house, and especially the superstitious Japanese put a miniature metal figurine in their wallet. In Greco-Roman traditions, she acted as an emblem of Aphrodite or Venus , identifying with the harmony of the relationship of lovers and debauchery.

Interesting facts

More than 600 species of toads live on Earth. Their history spans over 30 million years .

The world’s largest toads are Blomberg’s toad (up to 25 cm) and aga (15–17 cm). Yeah, besides, it’s also poisonous. The largest representative of the frog world is the goliath (up to 32 cm, and the total length, from muzzle to fingers, can exceed 90 cm). The smallest frogs reach 11–13 mm. Such people live in Cuba , in Peru , India and some other countries.

In Europe, frogs are considered a delicacy , but only grown in special factories.

Terrible leaf climber, or cocoi frog living in the jungles South America and Colombia is the most poisonous land animal on our planet. Its venom is thousands of times stronger than potassium cyanide and 35 times stronger than that of the Central Asian cobra.

Huge record-breaking toad discovered in Australia

A cane toad discovered by rangers in a rainforest in northeast Australia was so huge that at first they thought it was a fake and someone wanted to play a prank on them.

But the «monstrous specimen» turned out to be very much alive and real, and later weighing showed that the toad pulls 2.7 kilos, which is six times the normal weight of these amphibians, and may well pull on a world record.

However, Zhabazilla (as the toad was called by analogy with the fictional Japanese monster Godzilla) will no longer be able to roam free. She was immediately placed in a container and taken out of the forest. The fact is that cane toads are not indigenous to Australia, they were brought there in 1935, in the absence of natural predators they incredibly multiplied (there are already hundreds of millions of them) and are considered the most harmful animal in the country. In addition, toads are also poisonous, so even crocodiles are too tough for them.

  • A toad the size of a dog was caught in Australia
  • Australia’s main pest is expected in China
  • A skyscraper coral reef was found off the coast of Australia. It’s taller than the Empire State Building

When ranger Kylie Gray spotted the massive amphibian while walking around the area, she couldn’t believe her eyes. «I’ve never seen anything like it,» she told Australian Broadcasting Corporation ABC. «This toad looked like a soccer ball with paws, and we named it Jabasilla. »

It was not difficult to catch the toad, apparently a female, after which it was taken to the ranger camp, where they took measurements. From the very beginning it was clear that this toad was not just heavy, but very, very heavy, but when the scales showed 2.7 kg, the rangers realized that they were dealing with a real champion. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the heaviest toad in the world is considered to be a tame toad from Sweden named Prinzen, who pulled 2.65 kilos in 1991.

Gray believes that Zhabazilla fed on insects, reptiles and small mammals. According to her, a cane toad of this size will eat anything it can stuff into its mouth. Rangers were unable to determine the age of the Toad with certainty, but given that such toads can live up to 15 years, this individual was not young. There was, because the fate of the matriarch of the toad kingdom turned out to be unenviable (she had to be killed — humanely, of course, in a way), as they do in Australia with all alien pests, and her carcass was donated to the Queensland Museum.
