The witcher eredin: The Witcher Casting Two Different Actors For Eredin Is Really Weird

The Witcher Casting Two Different Actors For Eredin Is Really Weird

By
Cian Maher

Two different actors have been cast as Eredin in Netflix’s Witcher projects. which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Eredin Bréacc Glas — which means Eredin Green Trout in Irish, making the King of the Wild Hunt significantly less intimidating than his skull mask otherwise implies — is immortal. Like all of the Aen Elle elves, he can die in battle, but aside from that he’s like Legolas from The Lord of the Rings — he could be 6,000 years old and look like the cover model for Men’s Health.

So why, reader, has Netflix cast a young Eredin for The Witcher: Blood Origin and a noticeably older one for The Witcher season two?

This decision is seriously missing a trick. For those unacquainted with The Witcher’s timeline, Blood Origin is set 1,200 years before Netflix’s main series, which makes casting two separate actors for a character confirmed to appear in both seem fairly reasonable. The thing is, Eredin’s cruel visage is his whole character. This is the leader of the Red Riders, the regicidal usurper of the Tir na Lia throne who is synonymous with dread and death. It’s that aforementioned skull mask spearheading the Wild Hunt cavalcade that controls the gravitas of its horror, and by changing Eredin’s face and mannerisms, you’re sacrificing the authority of his consistency across centuries.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very excited to see how and why Eredin plays into Blood Origin’s narrative. We know very little about Eredin’s earlier years, save for the fact that he led raid after raid on planets dotted throughout the metaverse. Prior to his assassination of Auberon, Eredin is basically just a very competent and cruel warrior, revered as the face of death itself in every sphere sufficiently aware to be afraid of his conquest. As he pushed on, both him and the rest of the Red Riders started to use magical illusions to make themselves look even more harrowing — this once again applies to the skull mask, though, as opposed to wrinkles or greying hair. Eredin’s youth is part of what makes him so fearsome — I mean, he’s from Tir na Lia, which is based on Tir na nÓg from Irish mythology, which quite literally translates to “The Land of Youth.”

Combine all of this with the fact that he was assigned his title as the King of the Wild Hunt — before becoming king of Tir na Lia — by the people he slaughtered as opposed to it being the result of self-proclamation and you can get a pretty decent image of Eredin without knowing much about him. In The Witcher saga and games, he’s primarily concerned with finding Ciri so he can conquer The Continent and colonize it for his people. That makes his appearance long before Ciri was born particularly fascinating, although that fascination is weakened by the fact we’re going to get different versions of him. I know people change — I’m 25 and thinking of myself at 18 makes me cringe. 1,200 years is a long time, but Eredin is not a man known for introspection or taking the back seat. After he gains control of Tir na Lia’s throne, the first thing he does is appoint Ge’els — the guy we meet in The Witcher 3 — as his unofficial regent. Why, I hear you ask? Because Eredin couldn’t give a rats about politics and wants to continue leading the Red Riders on every raid they go on. His capacity for violence is the most defining aspect of his character, alongside his ambition — both are instantly and importantly communicable by his cruel, constant visage.

Maybe it has something to do with separating his spectral form from his real one. Because the Wild Hunt can’t just rampage into The Continent in force — this is why they need navigators like Caranthir, and why they want Ciri’s Elder blood in the first place — the versions Geralt and the rest of the squad see are just ghostly manifestations of their pure physical forms. It could be used to great effect if employed to specifically make comprehension easier — we see Eredin’s original form in Blood Origin, but in The Witcher season two it’s his illusory avatar, which articulates the difference between the two versions of him. I don’t understand why one would be older, though, and why you couldn’t just have Eredin in kingly attire in Tir na Lia and skeletal armour on the Continent, so even if this hypothetically makes sense, it falls flatter than the dirt beneath his horse’s spectral hooves.

I don’t know. Maybe it’s as simple as wanting to communicate that time has passed. I mean, sure, there’s over a millennium between the shows, and people will probably expect Eredin to have grown a grey hair or two over that time. As someone who is almost absurdly invested in The Witcher, though, I think showing the sheer intimidation and power of Eredin remaining completely unchanged over the course of 1,200 years is a missed opportunity. The cavalcade doesn’t age and it makes sure other people don’t get the chance to — that’s the whole point.

Wild Hunt Leader Eredin’s Lore Explained

The Wild Hunt are the main antagonists of The Witcher 3, and an important force in the Witcher novels. Earlier this month, pictures from the set of Netflix’s second season of The Witcher revealed that the Wild Hunt would almost certainly be making an appearance, drawing new attention to the Wild Hunt, and their leader, in the books and games.

In The Witcher 3, the Wild Hunt is led by a mysterious figure named Eredin Breacc Glas. Though he often appears as a specter, he is in fact a physical being from another world, with politics and problems similar to those found in Geralt’s. Here’s a breakdown of Eredin Breacc Glas’ story in the books and the games.

The Aen Elle Elves

Eredin Breacc Glas was a powerful general of the Aen Elle Elves. These Elves are distinct from the Aen Seidhe Elves who live on the continent that Geralt of Rivia grew up on. 1500 years before the events of the novels, the Conjunction of the Spheres caused the multiverse to disperse species and monsters from many different realities across multiple worlds.

This brought humans to the main world in which The Witcher is set, where they eventually became the dominant species. Before the humans arrived, however, that world had been inhabited by Elves. Following the Conjunction, some of these Elves used powerful magic to leave their planet through portals. They arrived on a new world which they found inhabited by humans and The Witcher‘s version of Unicorns. They slaughtered the humans and began a seemingly endless war with the Unicorns. They founded a new capital city, Tir Na Lia, and came to call themselves the Aen Elle — the Alder Folk.

In the world of The Witcher, these otherworldly Elves came to fill the role of Elves in much of Northern European mythology — terrifying unearthly beings associated with magic and death. In contrast, the Elves who remained on their original homeland lived lives similar to their human cohabitants, though they found themselves and other non-humans oppressed in human society.

Eredin Breacc Glas was born an Aen Elle Elf at some point after the arrival of his people on their new world. He became a successful general known for leading campaigns against the Unicorns, and served under King Auberon Muircetach. Auberon is named after the mythical king of the fairies, King Oberon, who appears in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is just one of many Shakespearean references in The Witcher series.

The Red Riders

King Auberon’s society had a problem. Having killed the human population, it was left without any slaves. However, the Aen Elle Elves had captured a Unicorn who they could use to access the Gate of the Worlds. The Gate of the Worlds was the name for a power held by the Unicorns which allowed them to move through space and time. The Aen Elle were able to give Eredin this power. He was made captain of the Red Riders, later known as the Wild Hunt. This was a cavalry with a single goal: travelling to other worlds to take slaves.

To strike fear into the worlds he visited, Eredin and his Red Riders donned skeleton-like armor and used magic to make themselves appear more spectral through effects like voice alteration. Eventually Eredin rediscovered the main world of The Witcher which his people had originally left. He found that humans had taken over, but consequently considered the world ideal for his mission. Eredin and the Red Riders would return to this world many times, taking more and more slaves as they did. With no way to know where these terrifying riders were coming from the people of Geralt’s world began calling them the Wild Hunt, and Eredin the King of the Wild Hunt.

Eventually, however, the Aen Elle lost control of the Gate of the Worlds. This trapped them on their world, but they eventually developed a way for small groups to travel to other worlds, where they would tear across the sky in spectral form. In 1267 Eredin and his Wild Hunt encountered Princess Ciri, who they realized had Elder Blood. They believed that by bringing her back to mate with their king they would restore the Elder Blood and its immense magical powers to the Aen Elle.

Eredin And Ciri

An Aen Elle Elf named Avallac’h was eventually able to lure Ciri to their world. However, King Auberon found the prospect of mating with a human disgusting. Under the guise of delivering an aphrodisiac, Eredin poisoned and usurped his king. Though he had long been called King of the Wild Hunt, he was now truly the king of the Aen Elle. Avallac’h was one of few to suspect his betrayal.

In the timeline of The Witcher games, Eredin found himself facing a new problem. His world began to get taken over by the White Frost, an eternal winter which would destroy all life. Eredin believed that only the magic of the Elder Blood could stop this, but Ciri was able to escape back to her home world with the help of a Unicorn. Now, Eredin’s sole mission became tracking down Ciri. Hoping to lure Ciri with her loved ones, he captured Yennefer of Vengerberg. Geralt eventually caught up with the Wild Hunt and offered himself in exchange.

Ciri was able to rescue Geralt without being caught, but she fell into the hands of the Crones, who served Eredin. Ciri would escape the Crones, but Eredin’s relentless pursuit of her and her Elder Blood would eventually lead to the death of Vesemir, Geralt’s mentor. Enraged, Ciri nearly unleashed her full powers against Eredin before he escaped back through a portal to his world.

After many chases and near-escapes, Geralt would eventually fight Eredin in a battle that took the pair through portals to many different worlds. Geralt’s victory ended in Eredin’s death, but in his dying moments he hinted that both of them had been used by Avallac’h, who wanted to use Ciri’s power for his own ends. The game never reveals whether or not he was telling the truth.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.

Eredin will appear in The Witcher: Origins of Blood

NewsPosted on by Sigi Reuven

According to Redanian Intelligence, Eredin Break the Glass, known to fans of the game, will appear in The Witcher: Origins of Blood. The Witcher 3 as King of the Wild Hunt. British-Australian actor Jacob Collins-Levy, best known for his roles in Starz’s The White Princess and Netflix’s Young Wallander, will play the part in The Witcher prequel.

Eredin is supposed to be one of the key characters in the story and the Netflix writers will give us their interpretation of the backstory of the leader of the Red Riders. The problem is that Eredin is also expected to appear in the second season of the main series, which takes place hundreds of years after the events of the prequel. And it’s not at all about the timing — the elves are famous centenarians, but that a completely different actor, Sam Hazeldine, is announced for the role of Eredin in the second season of The Witcher.

Sam Hazeldine

The reason for this inconsistency is not yet clear. Perhaps there was a problem with the shooting schedule, or maybe Netflix decided to introduce a younger version of Eredin in the prequel. The appearance of the actors is quite similar, so this should not cause much dissonance among the audience. In addition, in the main series, this role is likely to be episodic.

In the meantime, male lead Laurence O’Fuorane has begun work at Arborfield Studios. Most likely, we are talking about pre-shooting. Whether a replacement has been found for Jodie Turner-Smith, who left the project, has not yet been reported. Principal photography for the series is set to begin in early August 2021.

Eredin, Itlina and Avallac’h will appear in The Witcher prequel

Simple Jack

News

Back in May last year, we reported that Eredin, the leader of the Riders of the Wild Hunt, would appear in The Witcher: Origins miniseries. Later, in September, it became known that the mother of the prophetess Itlina would also be present in the prequel, on the basis of which we assumed that we would see Itlin herself among the characters. In a recent interview, prequel showrunner Declan de Barra and main show showrunner Lauren Hissrich confirmed the appearance of these two canonical characters, and also mentioned a third, Avallac’h, an elf from the people of Aen Elle.

When asked about the connection between the main Witcher series and the prequel, de Barra told Screenrant: completely innocent and uncorrupted, and only then become the multi-layered dark creatures that you see them in games, books and the main series.

Avallac’h

Fans of the game series know Avallac’h very well from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — he played an important role in the end of the main plot. However, this is an original character created by Andrzej Sapkowski who appeared in the books The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake.

Who will play Avallac’h in the prequel? This question is still open. In the officially presented cast, he was not mentioned, and there were no leaks about this either. The reason, most likely, is not the desire of the authors to keep this a secret, but that the role of Avallac’h will be secondary and its performer will receive a small amount of screen time.

Itlina

Itlina herself is not as famous as her famous prophecy, which we heard back in the first season of The Witcher from Ciri who fell into a trance. The text predicts the apocalypse, the end of the current world, but at the same time mentions the rebirth that the Child of the Elder Blood will bring about.

In an interview, Declan de Barra said that Lauren Hissrich was interested in exploring the concept of Ithlina more deeply, as well as developing this character through a prequel. Here’s what the showrunner of The Witcher herself said about it:

So, we know that Claire Cooper will play Itlina’s mother. Who will appear in the role of the prophetess herself? According to one version, the future Itlina may be Zakare, the character of Lizzy Annis. But with the same probability, Zakare may be the elven witch Volet Meir. The same variant, as in the case of Avallac’hom, is not ruled out, in which Ithlina will not be one of the main characters, and one of the supporting actors will play her.

Eredin

The prequel features a younger version of Eredin played by Jacob Collins-Levi. He will appear before us not as the king of the Wild Hunt, but as an ambitious and obedient commander of the Cintrian army.
