Usually not bothering to develop story additions to their projects, the guys from Naughty Dog decided to make an exception for The Last of Us. What came of it and why developers can forgive such a decision with a pure heart — read in our review

Russian name The Last of Us: Left Behind
Genre Action
Publisher SCEE
Publisher in Russia SCEE
Developer Naughty Dog
Release date February 14, 2014
Age requirement from 18 years old
Platforms PlayStation 3

One of the best projects on the previous generation of consoles — The Last of Us — has got a plot addition. As practice shows, in the vast majority of cases of this kind, DLC show off hastily cobbled together history and catch the eye of already familiar scenery. However, there are pleasant exceptions, especially when studios like Naughty Dog get involved. With Left Behind, they not only tried to tell a touching story, but also threw all their hard work and experience into trying to arouse emotions in the players. And you know, they did it.

Why you should play The Last of Us, you can read in our review. We will not linger and immediately plunge into the plot twists and turns of Left Behind. However, it would be pointless to talk about them without mentioning the key events of the main game. If you are afraid of spoilers, close your eyes and boldly scroll to the rating table. Those who managed to touch the masterpiece of Naughty Dog, please follow us.

The expansion begins after the end of the episode «Autumn» and tells about Ellie’s attempt to save the badly injured Joel. We have to explore the shopping center in search of medicines, from time to time bumping into the infected, then the simple marauders, or even all at once. You can forget about fisticuffs and in general any head-on collisions — a fragile girl is not able to withstand strong opponents in an open battle. But to attack stealthily is a nice thing. A shopping trip in and of itself is of little value, and if it were the only DLC content, the developers would rightfully be labeled lazy. However, Naughty Dog is not so simple, and the other side of the coin turned out to be extremely beautiful.

It tells about the events that took place a few hours before the infection of Ellie and her friend Riley. In The Last of Us, the girl briefly mentioned what happened. The addition invites you to take part in what is happening on your own. Who knew that Naughty Dog prepared not just DLC, but a sweet story about friendship and — take away especially impressionable ones from the screens — love? Moreover, the developers throw in the course of «heavy artillery» in the form of vast experience in staging game scenes. Here are the girls fooling around, trying on the masks of a werewolf and a vampire. Compete in throwing stones at cars. Read jokes to each other while the amazing music of Gustavo Santaolalla plays in the background. Left Behind is full of such small, almost imperceptible and seemingly meaningless episodes that imperceptibly bind the player to the characters. Such things make a person watching TV understand and feel those emotions, that joy that teenagers experience. And even knowing how their carefree wandering around the supermarket will end, it is impossible not to enjoy every fleeting moment with the characters.

Left Behind knows how to show off beautiful angles

Some may think that Left Behind has too much fanservice and Ellie herself. Indeed, she is often shown close-up, forced to make faces and be in every possible way different from the girl we are used to in The Last of Us. And there is nothing surprising in this. During the events of Left Behind, she was still a naive child, and the addition demonstrates this very well. It also shows how quickly children grow up when the whole world is trying to kill them.

The main focus of the add-on is on history. It does not stretch it for a dozen or two hours, but, on the contrary, seeks to tell as much as possible in a short time. If you forget about the search for secrets, then the DLC can be completed in a couple of hours. Only some 120 minutes, but they are more impressive than some standalone games. Here we should thank Naughty Dog for using a albeit formulaic, but very successful move with the alternation of ongoing events: just now we were hiding from the clickers for Ellie-from-the-present, and the next moment we are laughing at jokes together with Ellie-from-the-past and her friend. Such transitions allow you to take a breath after especially tense situations and help the story to not sag until the very end. The final battle becomes the only fly in the ointment — the obligatory killing of waves of marauders by a teenage girl looks too implausible.

Cicadas. Where would we be without them

It seems that no matter what Naughty Dog undertakes, she succeeds. Even the addition to its most successful project, the studio approached with due attention. Left Behind pleasantly surprises with its elaboration — in terms of the number of small details it is not inferior to the original game, and the short duration does not interfere with raising important topics in the story. Although the plot of The Last of Us is already quite solid, the DLC allows you, albeit for a short time, to return to a dark and dangerous world, and at the same time watch a very emotional story.

Strengths:

  • well-executed idea with a parallel narrative;
  • excellent staging of «game» scenes;
  • some episodes are done so sincerely that you involuntarily begin to associate yourself with the heroine.

Disadvantages:

  • completely redundant final fight.
Graphics There are practically no open spaces and walking giraffes, but there are excellent close-ups. Let’s not forget that Left Behind is an addition to the most technologically advanced game on the PlayStation 3. 10
Sound All these groans and groans of the infected still make them shudder and look around frantically. Gorgeous voiced dialogues and pleasant music are included. 9
Single game This add-on builds on the original game’s ability to select answers in some conversations. A trifle, does not affect anything, but it’s nice. Otherwise, it’s still the same The Last of Us with all its advantages and disadvantages. 9
Team play Not available.
General impression The high cost and short duration of Left Behind may scare you away, but if you like good stories and liked the original, you should definitely not pass by the add-on — it is not inferior to The Last of Us in terms of the level of development. 9
