The last of us new game plus: Guide for The Last of Us Remastered

Guide for The Last of Us Remastered

So, you’ve completed the game; well done! If you’re going for the platinum, however, there’s still much work to be done. The Last of Us offers players a New Game+ Mode which unlocks after completing the game for the first time. The game is exactly the same in New Game+ mode as it is in normal play, except you keep all your skill and weapon upgrades, as well as unused parts and supplements. You also keep all Training Manuals and collectibles (some will still show up in the game). The weapons themselves, however, do not carry over; you still have to find them in the game as you come to them.

If you’re following this guide, we assume you played through the game on Easy. You unlock New Game+ Mode ONLY for the difficulty level(s) you’ve beating. In our case, we completed the game on Easy, so we only have access to Easy — New Game+. Playing through the game on Easy — New Game+ should be a cinch due to knowledge you’ve gained from your first playthrough as well as the fact that you are much more upgraded now. You could easily complete a New Game+ rather quickly since you don’t have to worry about collectibles. However, to earn the platinum, you’re going to have to complete a Survivor — New Game+ at some point. So does that mean you have to complete a playthrough of the game on Survivor first? Well… officially, yes. But there is a workaround!

Using the above workaround, you can earn every single normal and New Game+ trophy in the game in two playthroughs, even if your first playthrough was on Easy mode.

And, if you played the game through on Grounded Mode+, you’ll earn…

So let’s talk a little bit about Grounded Mode. Grounded Mode was added to the game as a free DLC to add more challenge. Grounded Mode is basically Survivor difficulty but slightly more mean.

First off, ammunition, crafting items, supplements, and parts are all incredibly scarce. Even items behind shiv doors are reduced somewhat. This makes inventory and ammunition management a must. Don’t waste Molotovs and nail bombs on single targets (except Bloaters, of course). Headshots are also much more important than on easier difficulties as that greatly reduces ammunition usage. There are moments in the game where you have no choice but to use weapons, of course, but if you can use stealth in a certain situation, definitely use it!

Speaking of stealth; stealth is an absolute MUST on Grounded Mode. Enemies can kill you in as little as two pistol hits, so even single enemies can cause an unfortunate game over. Staying in stealth as much as possible ensures you aren’t overwhelmed by a bunch of enemies all at once, plus anytime the enemy isn’t shooting or attacking you instantly reduces risk. The Grounded Mode playthrough will definitely take some time to complete due to the number of times you might die and reset an area, as well as the amount of time you’ll be spending in a crouched position.

You should also make use of the bottle/brick functionality. Tossing a brick at an approaching human or Runner will cause them to stumble, allowing you to run up to them and kill them up close. This saves you countless amounts of ammunition, especially because bottles and bricks are as prevalent on Grounded Mode as they are on other difficulty levels.

The bottom line when dealing with Grounded Mode is this: it’s going to take some time and it’s going to take some trial and error. Work through the game as best you can and if you run into a trouble area that you just can’t seem to pass, step away from the game for a while or go play some multiplayer, then come back. Stay patient and stay persistent and you’ll get through it!

Finally, let’s discuss the two trophies related to upgrading your skills and weapons. The ‘Everything we’ve been through‘ trophy requires you to fully upgrade all of Joel’s skills through supplements. If you are searching most rooms and area you come to, you will probably unlock this trophy about halfway through your second playthrough. It cannot be unlocked in a single playthrough as there are not enough supplements in the game to fully upgrade Joel. Just remember to start a New Game+, because if you start a normal game, your stats will NOT carry over. Once you get the last upgrade, you’ll unlock…

The For emergencies only‘ trophy functions similarly, but it’s a little bit trickier. First, you can only upgrade at workstations, so you can’t just upgrade whenever you want. Second, you can only upgrade weapons once you’ve collected them, meaning weapons you don’t find until much later in the game have to wait to be upgraded. Finally, if your New Game+ playthrough is on a high difficulty level, there MIGHT not be enough parts to upgrade even after two playthroughs, so you may have to start a third.

Because of that last issue, you may want to avoid upgrading any weapons until you find the flamethrower. Once you find the flamethrower, start upgrading the weapons from last found to earliest found. This is because, if you DO have to go into a third playthrough, you don’t have to proceed all the way through the game again to finish upgrading the later weapons if they’re already maxed out. When you have finally made the last upgrade, you’ll unlock…

When you’ve got all the trophies the single-player mode has to offer, it’s time to work on the multiplayer. Head to the next page for information and tips regarding all things The Last of Us multiplayer.

The Last of Us 2 New Game Plus and how to unlock it

The Last of Us 2 new game plus mode is a feature for those who want to experience the game again, bringing Ellie’s progress and upgrades through into a new game. Alternatively, you can do an entirely fresh playthrough and start as you did the first time around — but why through away all that effort? We’ll explain how to unlock New Game+ in The Last of Us Part 2 below, as well as what the feature does and what carries over.

Unlocked once you’ve completed the campaign on any difficulty setting, a notification will pop up to tell you that The Last of Us 2 New Game Plus Mode can now be accessed, and will appear as the first option on the main menu.

This will let you play through the game again with all of the previous upgrades you have unlocked in the first runthrough, including your skill tree progress, crafting recipes, weapons and modifications, and collectibles. The only caveat is that while skill tree upgrades and crafting recipes will be available from The Last of Us Part 2 New Game Plus Mode’s beginning, your existing weapon arsenal will only unlock once Ellie has arrived in Seattle.

New Game Plus Mode in The Last of Us 2, among other things, is a great way to soften the edge of replaying the campaign on Grounded Mode, which disables Listen Mode, greatly reduces the number of scavengable resources in the game world, and even presents the option to enable permadeath, among other tweaks. It’s a gauntlet, to say the least, but the option to begin that trial with all of your upgrades, weapons, and resources intact will certainly make the journey a little more achievable.

You’ll still be able to scavenge resources in The Last of Us Part 2 New Game Plus Mode, thus giving players the opportunity to max out Ellie’s skill trees and weapon upgrades, letting you find out just how powerful this one-woman army can be when she’s operating at full capacity.

Finally, The Last of Us Part 2 New Game Plus Mode is ideal for completionists, allowing you to pick up any missing collectables (artefacts, trading cards, and coins) you might have overlooked the first time, without having to pick up all the others that you own in a previous save.

nine0000 12 tips before passing The Last of Us 2: how to get the most out of the game — Pogorsky’s Notes — Blogs

We share our personal experience.

The Last of Us 2 (The Last of Us Part II) is a big game, different from the first in many ways. This linear game has many large locations, and one of the levels even has a miniature open world. Stealth and leveling are now much more important, and there are completely new mechanics here.

Sports.ru prepared 12 tips that you should read before the first playthrough. nine0059 There are no plot spoilers in the text.

The chosen difficulty matters a lot

Before starting a new game, The Last of Us Part II will prompt you to choose one of the difficulty levels. «Minimum» and «Low» practically turns TLOU 2 into a 30-hour interactive movie. For those who have not played the first The Last of Us or do not want to die often, it is better to choose the difficulty level «Medium». But «Part II» is a bit simpler than the original, so for more immersion and revealing all the mechanics, choose «High» or even «Survival» — there will be fewer resources for crafting and the enemies will be dangerous enough to force you to act carefully. nine0005

You can also create your own difficulty by setting each modifier individually: the amount of health of the character, the level of aggression of opponents, the usefulness of allies in battle, the vigilance of enemies and the amount of resources at levels.

Difficulty can be changed at any time, there is no penalty for this. You won’t miss the trophies either — they are not tied to difficulty.

The control scheme is fully customizable.

Part II is one of the most accessible and thoughtful video games ever made, with dozens of features added for people with disabilities. For example, there is a high-contrast mode with tinting the heroine and enemies, and you can also turn on signs to navigate the area, voice prompts for surrounding objects, and so on. nine0005

But even if you don’t need such accessibility, a useful control customization feature can come in handy: you can remap each button on the gamepad to your liking.

There are many points of no return in the game to keep in mind while exploring. The rest of the downloads are masked by cutscenes and special animations, the 30-hour campaign is interrupted only by a few black screens with chapter titles. That is, nothing distracts from the story, which is generally great.

nine0005

Only perfectionists can have problems. When you explore locations in search of collectibles and resources, you can accidentally activate a story trigger: the heroine will advance to the next part of the location, but you will not be able to go back. So if it’s important for you to immediately complete the game at 100%, it makes sense to make manual saves between fights — then, in extreme cases, you can load up and finish collecting items.

Some of the triggers are well disguised, but there are also obvious ones: a closed door that needs to be opened by holding a button; a cliff to jump off. Sometimes the heroine’s partners advise to «look for supplies first» before moving on — this is also a hint. nine0005

For Platinum, it is enough to complete the game once, there are no missable trophies here. Some of the trophies are plot related, the rest are related to finding collectibles, using workbenches, opening safes, and so on. There will also be a couple of mini-games in which you need to take first place — you will understand what we are talking about.

If you missed something along the way, after the credits you can see a list of all chapters with detailed statistics on subjects and replay those where something is missing. nine0005

But the unique weapons and equipment are easy to miss

Naughty Dog this time even more motivates you to explore locations, search oncoming buildings and look for passages to locked rooms. Often in such hard-to-reach places there are objects that will not be found anywhere else: for example, upon arrival in Seattle, Ellie can climb into a collapsed skyscraper with a bank where a shotgun lies. Or find a holster that allows you to carry both a pistol and a revolver at the same time. Or find a bomb trap, thereby opening the recipe for its manufacture. nine0005

Of course, you won’t miss the most important items like the bow, but the arsenal of attentive players will be much richer and more varied.

Don’t rely on hearing mode

TLOU 2 brought back the mechanic from the first game that allowed you to listen for nearby enemies by turning the screen to monochrome and showing human and infected silhouettes. The «built-in wallhack», according to the fans, made the passage too easy — many deliberately did not use this feature to make it more interesting to play. nine0005

In the sequel, the hearing mode is practically useless. Firstly, there are too large locations to detect most enemies with it. Secondly, opponents are more likely to behave very quietly — especially when sitting in cover. Thirdly, a whole faction of people, Seraphites (aka Scars) specialize in silence. That is, «wallhack» will most often show only noisy enemies (for example, those who run towards you with an ax screaming), which you would have seen anyway.

It is more effective to look for enemies in firing points with the naked eye and, for that matter, use your own hearing, preferably when playing with headphones. nine0005

Escape is always a good idea

Locations are almost always built in such a way that there are no unambiguously reliable hiding places. It is worth sitting down somewhere for a long time, as someone will bypass the heroine from the flank, throw a Molotov cocktail at her or set the dogs on fire. As soon as you lose initiative in combat, it’s best to run out of sight of the enemy: squeeze through a gap in the wall of the nearest shop, crawl under a truck, just run around a corner. Enemies will look for the heroine at the last point of her appearance — this is a chance to deliver a powerful attack by entering from the other side. nine0005

And stealth is even better

TLOU 2 is not a shooter, so it’s best to avoid unnecessary conflicts here. Completely clearing locations is only for a quiet search for collectibles, because in general, battles take too much ammo and resources. Ideally, the plan should be this: study the patrol routes, carefully remove the enemies on the chosen path and get to the desired point without raising the alarm. Ellie has plenty of tools for stealth: people and the infected can be distracted by throwing a bottle or a brick, someone can be shot with a bow or a pistol with a silencer, others can simply be stabbed from the back. As a last resort, try to run through the location after throwing a stun bomb. nine0005

Keep in mind that you won’t be able to run through the levels — the doors that need to be opened by holding the button will interfere. When wounded, the process, of course, resets to zero.

Be extra vigilant when dogs appear. They can pick up the trail of the crouching heroine (he can see it) and lead patrolmen to her. You will either have to distract them with a throw of a bottle, or kill them with a shot from a quiet one. In rare cases, you can simply run away before they find you.

Always prepare for the worst

Obvious but critical advice. Always make sure that each weapon is fully loaded with ammo, the necessary items are created, and the level of health remains at a high or maximum level.

It is also worth spending resources wisely: for example, modifying a melee weapon with a blade not only increases its damage, but also fully restores durability. This means that it is more profitable to attach scissors to your machete, pipe or jack on the verge of breaking them. nine0005

Don’t rush to spend spare parts and supplements

Both resources for weapon upgrades and character leveling are quite limited even on «Medium» difficulty. Therefore, it is better to save them for upgrades that are really useful or suitable for your style of play, and not spend on everything. Remember that there are more than a dozen types of weapons in the game, and skills are divided into four branches — three of them are opened by special manuals that are hidden in the levels.

With weapons, it can be especially disappointing, because workbenches for installing improvements, unlike the parts themselves, are quite common.

Most puzzles can be solved with a roll

TLOU 2’s environments are much more interactive than the first game, which is reflected in the new mini-puzzles. There are several places in the story where the heroine needs to activate some kind of mechanism or climb somewhere, but she can’t do it in the usual way. As a rule, in such cases, you need to throw something somewhere: throw the power cable over the gate, throw the cable onto the beam in order to overcome the abyss on it.
