Is the Last of Us Part 2 coming to PC? Sony hasn’t announced anything yet, but we have strong evidence that it’s going to happen eventually: The Last of Us (Part 1) is coming to PC. Sony accidentally leaked the news itself on the PlayStation website. Whoops!

The Last of Us confirmed for PC

On June 9, a listing for The Last of Us for PlayStation 5 popped up on the PlayStation website, complete with a trailer for a very nice looking remaster of the original game. It’s due on PlayStation 5 in September… and the trailer ends with a note that TLOU is also in development for PC.

A Naughty Dog job post suggests a PC version of The Last of Us Part 2

The main evidence pointing at The Last of Us Part 2 on PC is this Naughty Dog job posting . Naughty Dog is looking for a graphics programmer with a «thorough understanding of current GPU architectures,» including AMD and Nvidia. The interesting bit there is the inclusion of Nvidia.

The PS4 and PS5 run on a custom AMD GPU, so it’s suspicious to be seeking experience with hardware that has nothing to do with PlayStation. On top of that, the post asks for experience with «DirectX12, Vulkan or other modern graphics or compute APIs» and «console or PC programming experience.»

Taken at face value, it sounds like Naughty Dog wants The Last of Us Part 2 to be compatible with a variety of hardware. That simply doesn’t line up with the game being exclusive to the PS4 or even ported to the PS5.

A Last of Us Part 2 port lines up with Sony’s plan for the PC

Rumors of PC versions for Sony games go a lot deeper than just The Last of Us Part 2, especially as of late. Sony CEO Jim Ryan recently revealed in an interview with GQ that «a whole slate» of PC ports are coming from Sony’s first-party lineup. That’s incredibly exciting news that also confirms what we’ve heard in the past. Media Molecule has spoken on several occasions about its plans to bring its open-ended creation tool, Dreams, to PC someday. 

In December 2019, Sony itself announced plans to bring MLB: The Show to multiple platforms as early as 2021. This may be a special deal struck to keep the MLB license in Sony’s hands, but it shows at least some willingness for the company to branch out. Death Stranding and Horizon: Zero Dawn also both launched on PC in summer 2020. 

In 2019, Sony finally caved on crossplay and is now officially supporting the technology. Today, you can play games like Minecraft, Fortnite, Rocket League, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare together across the PS4 and PC (along with Xbox and Switch, too). Game streaming subscription service PlayStation Now has an official PC client , effectively making the service’s entire library playable on PC.

Sony hasn’t made any official comment about the Naughty Dog job posting. That’s business as usual: the company has a history of not commenting on rumors. If its real, we likely won’t hear about The Last of Us Part 2 on PC until Sony is good and ready. Hopefully, that day is closer than we think.

It’s official: developer Naughty Dog is working on The Last of Us for PC, and now we’re also having an official release date! The game series has been PlayStation exclusive for many years, but will finally make the jump to home computers. There have been lots of rumors about a PC version of The Last of Us for years, so many gamers will probably have cheered when Sony officially confirmed the game to be released as a remake for PC and PS5 during the Summer Game Fest 2022. The remake includes many improvements to the original, including better graphics and modernized gameplay. The DLC Left Behind, which tells a prequel story focused on Ellie, is also likely to be included in the remake.

The Last of Us PC Port: Release Date

The Last of Us came out on September 2, 2022 for the PlayStation 5. There have been speculations that the PC version could still follow in 2022 after a Naughty Dog employee stated that the PC-Version of The Last of Us «should come out a bit later, but very soon after the PS5 release».

Well, the bad news is that it won’t be released in 2022. The good news is that you don’t have to wait that long to play it on your computer, since the release date for the PC port has now been officially revealed: The Last of Us for PC will be released on March 3, 2023!

Sony has long confirmed their commitment to bringing most – if not all – of their console-exclusives from PlayStation to PC. The reason is simple: More buyers means more money, and more happy gamers equal more brand-awareness. Frankly speaking, the players are divided into two camps: in the first one sit everyone who was delighted with the game. And first of all, from the plot. And in the opposition are those who did not like the game one way or another. And the reason for the indignation of the players is obvious and lies on the surface — the plot twists, the gameplay that has not changed much in relation to the first part and, of course, the LGBT agenda.

Today, I will try to figure out with you whether the plot of The Last of Us is really as amazing as it is praised in the gaming media and certain circles of players. Since the topic of the video/text is about the story, avoiding plot spoilers will not work under any circumstances. Therefore, I strongly advise everyone who did not have time to get acquainted with these games, close the video / article and return to them after completing the series. And for everyone else who is not afraid of spoilers — enjoy watching / reading! And one more digression. I am not a certified literary critic or playwright, so all the conclusions that will sound in the video are just my conjectures based on personal observations. Now that’s all for sure. So, in this analysis, I will rely on the work of Georges Polti, familiar to many literary critics, called «Thirty-six Dramatic Situations.» A few words about the author. Mr. Polti lived in France in the 19th and 20th centuries, studying drama and writing about theater and literature along the way. In general, he was a smart guy. «Thirty-six Dramatic Situations» was based on an analysis of the dramatic works of Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the dramaturgy of modern times. This means that Polti analyzed about 1200 works, so it makes no sense to consider his work groundless.

Why do I think that «The Last of Us» is, first of all, a dramatic work? And let’s go back to history. Initially, theatrical plays focused on tragedy plots. That is, productions in the finale of which there is a catastrophic outcome for the characters. As a rule, «catastrophic» meant death. Reality in tragedies is presented in a severe hypertrophied form, as well as the main conflict, which is aggravated to the limit. The most famous example of a tragedy is Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The global conflict of two warring families can be resolved only after a critical moment — the death of the main characters. This, of course, is very generalized, and Shakespeare’s tragedies were created during the crisis of the Late Renaissance. But still, the idea of ​​​​the genre is already there.

Gradually, playwrights began to move away from the traditions of tragedy, replacing global conflicts with more everyday and familiar to the common man. Along with the shift in the themes of the conflict, interest also departed from the tragic endings of the plays. A new theatrical genre called «drama» has emerged, which reflects and highlights the relationship between people and their actions, and as a result, the resulting conflicts. For drama, the reflection of the private life of a person and the conflicts of the hero in society become a common thing. But social contradictions are presented through «representatives». That is, characters that reflect certain social moods.

Now back to The Last of Us. Even the name of these games already tells us a lot, especially after a literary and historical digression. Although it can be argued that translating verbatim from the original, the meaning of the name will be somewhat different. But we will use what we have. Thanks to the Russian localization at least somewhere.

Let’s remember what the first part of «The Last of Us» was about. The protagonist, a smuggler named Joel, must bring a girl named Ellie to the laboratory of the Cicadas, a group of revolutionaries fighting against the government organization FEDR. The requirements of the Cicadas were simple enough: the restoration of the US authorities and the abolition of the military regime established by PHEDRA. For their part, PHEDRA was the last organ of government after the onset of the worldwide Cordyceps epidemic. PHEDRA made little effort to restore the state to its pre-pandemic state. But the Cicadas, on the contrary, tried in every possible way to find a vaccine and bring society back to life before quarantine. During the adventure, it turned out that Ellie was immune to the virus. Therefore, the Cicadas needed a girl, and Joel had to deliver the “next package” to the customer. At the end of the game, it turns out that the only way to make a vaccine is to perform an operation that will kill Ellie. Joel, strongly attached to the girl, could not allow such an outcome. He cuts out almost all the staff at the Cicada Medical Center, takes Ellie and the heroes go to a safe place.

And now let’s go over the continuation. Five years after Ellie was rescued from Cicada Hospital, Joel and Ellie settled in the city of Jackson. While patrolling the area around the settlement, Joel does not return from his post in time. Worried, Ellie sets out to find Joel, and accidentally finds Joel surrounded by strangers. Ellie watches the massacre of Joel and, having survived, vows to avenge his life. A couple of months later, having recovered from her injuries and psychological trauma, Ellie and her friend leave in search of Joel’s killers in Seattle. And they do find it. Step by step, life by life, Ellie approaches the person responsible for Joel’s death. With her careless actions, Ellie leads her opponent to a temporary shelter. At this point, a revelation occurs and the cause of Joel’s death is revealed. It turns out that when the smuggler rescued Ellie from the Cicada hospital, the only virologist capable of creating a vaccine was killed during the massacre. But this is not the main thing. And most importantly, Joel killed Abby’s father, who was the same virologist. The same Abby who killed Joel in front of Ellie. As a result, Ellie’s revenge does not come true, physical strength is clearly on Abby’s side. The heroines disperse and each of the girls follows her own path.

Nevertheless, Ellie continues to gnaw at the feeling of imperfect revenge, and, contrary to her common sense, she again goes in search of Abby to finish what she started. The girl tracks down Abby, who was captured in a slave camp of a local group in California. Ellie frees a weakened Abby and challenges her to a hand-to-hand duel to finally avenge Joel. However, at the very last moment, Ellie lets Abby go without finishing the job. The heroine returns home and starts her life from scratch.

So, after we remembered the main points of the plots of the games, let’s move on to the schematic timeline. Here are a few key episodes that are important for a complete understanding of the plots:

  • Joel kills Abby’s father;
  • Abby takes revenge for her father;
  • Ellie puts Abby on her trail in an attempt to get revenge;
  • Ellie wants to avenge Joel.

And now let’s place these episodes on the timeline of two games. So, the main event for the first part is the murder of Abby’s father by Joel. In turn, Abby, although she was not shown during the adventures of Joel and Ellie, sets a goal to avenge her father’s life. Let’s designate these events as plots 1 and 2. These plots remain open until the beginning of the second part of The Last of Us. In the first third of the continuation of the game, Abby kills Joel, and Ellie, having survived, sets the goal to avenge the life of a loved one. This event triggers two new storylines, numbered 3 and 4 respectively. Ellie kills Abby’s friends in turn, asking them for the location of the latter. At the same time, Ellie behaves carelessly, leaving traces everywhere. Thanks to this, Abby herself comes to the fateful meeting with Ellie. At this point, storyline number 3 is closed. But one storyline remains open, «Vengeance for Joel’s life.» And it is he who closes in the epilogue, when Ellie releases Abby from captivity in California, and eventually releases her. It would seem that everything is obvious and understandable. It seems to be the plot “One of us. Part II” about forgiveness and teaching according to the covenants of the eternal that revenge does not lead to anything good. But is it really so?

As they say: «If you want to hide something, put it in a visible place.» So it is with the plot of TLOU 2

I, like many others, missed one important point. In the middle of the second part of The Last of Us, we see Ellie’s flashback, in which she, having matured, returns to the Cicada Medical Center, where they were going to operate on her. There, she learns from preserved documents and later from Joel that the vaccine could only be made by operating on Ellie’s brain, at the cost of her life. Although Joel initially claimed otherwise, proving that there are many immune people throughout the country. Ellie openly says that she hates Joel and will never be able to forgive his act. The day before Joel’s death, he and Ellie have a frank conversation. Ellie says her life has no meaning, but she knows that Joel would have kept her from dying anyway. And for that she hates him. And continued to hate even after the death of Joel.

And that’s what the whole story of “One of us. Part II». Not about revenge or its consequences, but about forgiveness and reconciliation. The key, most important and hidden plot of the game is Ellie’s reconciliation with the way Joel disposed of her fate. That’s why she can’t play the guitar at the end of the game. Ellie comes to terms with the inevitable consequences of choosing her named father, against her own judgment and wishes. In the same way that many children often come to terms with the results of their parents’ choices. Because the past cannot be corrected, you can only come to terms with it and continue to live on. But Ellie could not realize this simple truth and come to terms with Joel’s decision, hatred clouded her eyes, relegating all life’s joys to the background. After Joel’s death, finally realizing that the anger towards him cannot be released, Ellie tries to disguise it with revenge. Under the influence of hatred in the mask of revenge, Ellie loses close friends, lover, family, a peaceful life. She, like the old woman in that fairy tale, is left with nothing. But in the end, realizing the true cause of her inner demons, Ellie is left with nothing but reconciliation with her past, in which she takes for granted all the decisions that were made for her by Joel. So, symbolically, Ellie leaves the guitar and with it all the past.

So why the plot “One of us. Part II” can hardly be called delightful? In fact, having understood, savored and digested everything, he can be assigned such an assessment. But, in this game there is one very important «but». Let’s go back to the timeline of the game and remember how many story arcs were laid in the game from the very beginning. As many as four. And if you didn’t play the game on Survival difficulty, then the three obvious story arcs open and close very quickly. Too fast. Three obvious sub-plots in a game that takes only three in-game days to play is a catastrophic amount in my opinion. In addition, the main, fourth plot does not lie on the surface at all. Hell, I’ll say more — you can’t even come to him at all, taking the arch about revenge and forgiveness as the main one.

But what’s a good storyline if The Last of Us Part 2 isn’t? Well, for me personally, in the first places are the stories of «Spec Ops: The Line» and «Mass Effect 2». Why they? It’s all pretty prosaic. These stories are linear. They are not without twists and surprises, but they do not have a heap of arches that are in the second part of The Last of Us. «Spec Ops» is a story about a personal psychological tragedy. Throughout the game, we see ourselves as a knight in shining armor, but only in order to end up getting hit in the stomach in the form of awareness of our own dissociative identity disorder. I will not go into details, but it is better to play the game to understand what is at stake.

«Mass Effect 2» for me is a «classic» example. Everything in this story is perfect, from the beginning, where they show you that the hero is not a hero at all. And he is mortal, as are those whom he has pledged to protect. Until the finale, when there is a meeting face to face with the worst enemy, inflicting the last mortal blow on him. This is practically the first part of the Matrix trilogy, but in a different retelling.

Plot and main themes of the story

As with the original The Last of Us, the second installment relies on a well-delivered cinematic presentation and a plot that is not afraid to expose some of the worst manifestations of human qualities and raise questions of ambiguous moral norms. An adult story about ordinary people who find themselves in ambiguous situations. However, given the emphasis on the story of the game, the developers are in no hurry to share the details of the story, which is why Sony forced gaming publications to sign the strictest NDA, allowing reviews to talk openly about only a few hours of the story, leaving more than 90% game. That is why it may be believed that almost every review of The Last of Us Part II is an analogue of the diploma work of a loser, where tons of water are poured instead of specifics and facts.

However, the beginning of the story can be shared. The main characters of the first game, Ellie and Joel, after a failed operation in the hospital, return to one of the rare quiet corners in the cruel world of The Last of Us — the city of Jackson. After finding a new home, Ellie returns to the life of a typical teenager, finds new friends and the first serious love relationship. Joel finds something even more valuable — a real home and a chance to finally rest after 20 years of constant struggle for survival in a post-apocalyptic world. But one day, Jackson is shaken by a terrible event that mentally traumatizes Ellie and sets her on the path of revenge, killing everyone who hurt her in The Last of Us Part 2.

The plot is gloomy, but logical for a game where the central themes are hatred and cruelty. We warn you right away — get ready for shockingly brutal scenes in which the bloodiest Fatality from Mortal Kombat will seem like a performance for children’s matinees. According to development manager Neil Druckmann, naturalistic cruelty is not a means of outrageousness, but a way to disgust violence, showing how disgusting it really is. Therefore, if you want to save your nerves and do not want to witness some of the most violent scenes in the history of video games, then we recommend that you think twice about buying The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4.

Gameplay: exploration of locations and combat system

The gameplay of the sequel remained generally true to the original The Last of Us, adjusted for Ellie’s greater mobility compared to Joel and open levels, the concept of which, in a modified form, was transferred from Uncharted 4. Conventionally, The Last gameplay of Us Part 2 can be divided into two stages: exploration of locations where we collect resources and find secrets, as well as combat stages, releasing hordes of people and infected against us. Essentially, no major changes, but massive levels and an abundance of houses that are optional for exploration leave more opportunities for finding a variety of activities, some of which are accompanied by cutscenes. However, you should not expect additional tasks, the goal is always the same.

Additionally, the combat system benefited from sweeping locations, which was noticeably enriched in variability due to the presence of multi-storey buildings and a large number of entrances and exits, allowing approaching the enemy from several sides. Another benefit of the increased scale is the ease of retreat from the battlefield, because at its core the combat system has remained the same. Before us is again a positional stealth-action with elements of survival, where, in conditions of a shortage of ammunition, instead of a direct confrontation, the best course of action is: shoot / score with a brick — change position, repeat until victory. Also, do not forget about the ability to craft items of equipment that expand the scope of tactical actions.

Special mention deserves Naughty Dog’s desire to convey in The Last of Us Part 2 the agility and small proportions of a teenager Ellie compared to the rather massive fifty-year-old Joel. Increased running speed, the ability to keep pace between narrow passages in the walls, crawl under tables and trucks, and (finally) jump — all components work both from the gameplay side, adding dynamics to the gameplay, and from the story side, without causing significant dissonance between the appearance and the actual behavior of the character.

The range of movements was skillfully supplemented by the ability to crawl on the ground and perform any actions from a lying position, up to shooting and crafting items. And, of course, since Left Begind, no one has taken an unbreakable knife from Ellie.

The last significant element of the game is puzzles based on interaction with the environment, designed to slightly diversify the peaceful episodes. In the first The Last of Us, it was precisely such puzzles that caused the most negative responses due to the monotony and primitiveness of the tasks assigned to the players. In Part 2, they decided to rework the problem areas of the original by introducing simple puzzles tied to physics. Instead of rafts and ladders, now the main tools are rope and bricks, with which windows are broken. However, Naughty Dog did not completely abandon the old and recognizable tricks, sometimes offering to use garbage cans to climb to inaccessible heights.

Difficulty levels

Officially, The Last of Us genre is characterized as survival horror, in which the constant lack of ammunition is one of the main gameplay elements that brings tension to the gameplay and the need to tactically consider approaches to eliminating opponents. According to the rules of the genre, it is intended that the player feels at least minimal discomfort and a sense of danger during skirmishes with enemies. The main thing here is the delicate balance between difficulty and accessibility, which differs depending on what difficulty you choose to start playing The Last of Us Part 2.

In total, five levels of difficulty are available in the second part at the start:

  • Very low
  • Low
  • Medium
  • High
  • Survival

Now let’s try to explain on what difficulty level to play The Last of Us Part 2. Of course, if you are not looking for any special difficulties on your way and bought the game primarily for the cinematic scenes, then stop at the second or even the first level, at which even your cat will pass the game without any problems. The first difficulties come at an average level of difficulty, forcing you to manage resources and use your wits when clashing with numerous enemy units. It is the average level of difficulty that is optimal for most players. At the same time, we note that the balance has shifted slightly compared to the first part, which is why the average level of difficulty in The Last of Us. Part 2″ is a bit easier than the one in the first game, so for those who don’t mind moderate difficulties, we recommend giving preference to the high difficulty.

Finally, the last difficulty level currently available is Survival. In addition to standard options like fewer resources per level and increased damage, radius and visibility of opponents, it makes significant adjustments to their artificial intelligence. The changes relate to both a significantly increased speed of decision-making, and the meticulousness with which the enemies comb the locations and wander on Ellie’s trail. In fact, the game on Survival thanks to smarter enemies is noticeably different from other difficulty levels, so we suggest all experienced players at least try it or leave it for the second playthrough of The Last of Us Part 2 in New Game+ mode.

In addition, with the release, another difficulty mode will appear in the game — Realism. Naughty Dog is silent about its details, but it can be assumed that it will work similarly to Realism from the first game, that is, it will reduce the number of checkpoints and turn off the interface.

A separate feature of the game is the extended difficulty settings, with about 60 point-adjustable options. For example, you can adjust the vision of opponents, or reduce the number of items in the location and increase the damage from hitting enemies, which will provide yourself with additional hardcore. Or vice versa, no one bothers to reduce all parameters to a minimum, turning the game “One of us. Part 2″ into a relaxed walk through the children’s sandbox. The 60 options also include accessibility settings, divided into three categories: visual, auditory and motor. The first ones help to set up the game for the blind or those with vision problems, the second ones for the deaf or those with hearing problems, and the third ones for people with physical disabilities.

With the release of their new game, Naughty Dog once again showed what talented people can do with an almost unlimited development budget. They turned out to be capable of a lot — graphically, The Last of Us Part 2 is one of the most beautiful and technological games that came out on the consoles of the Playstation family. It’s expected that given the superb visuals, someone will want to upgrade their standard console to a Pro to play The Last of Us 2 at its best, but is there really that much of a difference between PS4 and PS4 Pro?
