The Last Airbender Game Compared to Breath of the Wild and Marvel’s What If

By
Dalton Cooper

A new report backs up the Avatar: The Last Airbender video game leak and even compares the game to Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has had a number of video game adaptations over the years, perhaps most famously 2007’s Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Burning Earth, which lets players unlock 1,000 Gamerscore in about five minutes. Most of the Avatar video game adaptations have failed to live up to the high bar set by the animated series, but the freshly-leaked Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance certainly sounds like it has potential.

Avatar: The Last Airbender news site Avatar News has published a report on the leaked Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG Quest for Balance. The site claims to have seen footage for the game, which will apparently launch on November 8 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The outlet compares Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in terms of the game’s visual style, though stresses that gameplay between the two is much different.

Whereas The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an open world game, Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance is not. According to the outlet, the game is about the Order of the White Lotus recapping the events of the animated series, with players going through the entire storyline, but with some key changes because of who is telling each story. As explained by Avatar News, the events of Book One: Water will be covered by Pakku, while Book Two: Earth will be covered by Bumi, and Book Three: Fire will be covered by fan favorite character Iroh. Avatar News said that the game will be «kind of like Avatar‘s What If…?» and while they only saw Aang in action, it’s their understanding there could be more playable characters.

If Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance is real, one has to imagine that fans will learn about the game in an official capacity sooner rather than later. After all, the game is supposedly pegged for a November 8 release date, which means that the publisher has only a few months to promote it. Gamescom Opening Night Live is set to take place on August 23, so maybe the game will have its grand unveiling at the event. Then again, it may be announced completely independent of any major gaming events, or the leaks may be inaccurate and it’s going to come later than expected.

Franchise fans should wait for an official announcement before getting too excited about Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance. But while the console RPG has yet to be announced, fans can check out the Avatar: Generations tactical RPG that’s been rolling out to select territories for Android and iOS devices.

Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance is rumored to be launching on November 8 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

The Last Airbender Video Game Adaptations

By
Cameron Swan

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of Nickelodeon’s top shows, but despite its great premise, it’s video game adaptations haven’t been so hot.

Nickelodeon has produced countless quality shows in its decades of operation, a good portion of which are still relevant today in one way or another. Shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are just a handful of what Nickelodeon’s produced over the years. But even in the face of this stiff competition, there’s one show that’s managed to transcend the usual realms of kid’s TV, and become a Nickelodeon star for all ages: Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Debuting in 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender thrusts audiences into an anime-inspired world, full of characters who are capable of manipulating one of four elements, such as Katara, Avatar‘s leading waterbender. While previous Nickelodeon shows had overarching plots and character development, none did it quite so elegantly as Avatar: The Last Airbender, and its high level of quality is what’s kept it so popular today. But where there’s popularity also comes spin-offs and adaptations, and Avatar: The Last Airbender has had plenty of those, some of which have been video games. Unfortunately though, despite having a premise that’s naturally suited for the video game format, Avatar: The Last Airbender has had a disappointing history in the video game landscape.

While Avatar: The Last Airbender has had many Flash browser games over the years, a now-defunct PC MMO called Avatar: Legends of the Arena, and even a handful of solid tabletop games, the series has only had a few fully-fledged console titles. The first of these was a 2006 title simply called Avatar: The Last Airbender. Set between Book One and Two, this title sees the player control either Aang, Sokka, Katara, or Haru in a fairly simplistic beat-em-up action-RPG. While critics agreed that the story was a fun addition to the canon of the series, and that the gameplay was well-suited to younger players, Avatar: The Last Airbender was just too simplistic and repetitive to recommend.

Just a year later, a direct sequel, Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Burning Earth would release. Though the gameplay remained nearly identical to its predecessor, it did add a few more features, such as a multiplayer mode, the ability to bend all four elements and enter the Avatar State, and flying sections with Appa and Momo. Aside from the infamous easy to obtain 1000G Xbox Achievement, there was little other reason to pick up Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Burning Earth, with critics once again condemning the title’s generic and repetitive gameplay.

Another year later, a third and final game in the series would release, this one titled Avatar: The Last Airbender — Into the Inferno. Based on Book Three, this title follows a similar gameplay style to its predecessors, though players can now play as Zuko. The Nintendo DS version of Into the Inferno is very different from its console counterparts, with a more cartoon-y art style, and a top-down perspective. Avatar: The Last Airbender — Into the Inferno reviewed even worse than its predecessors, with everything from the controls to the graphics to the plot being heavily criticized.

In 2007, a strategy game by the name of Avatar: The Last Airbender — Bobble Battles released. As the name implies, this title took a more chibi-inspired look, with the series’ iconic characters being portrayed with big heads. This game sees players control groups of characters and pit them against enemy forces, similar to a real-time strategy game, albeit a very simplistic one. Another chibi game, Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Path of Zuko released in 2008, this time being a top-down puzzle game where players use Zuko’s firebending powers to push blocks and defeat enemies.

In 2010, The Last Airbender released for Nintendo DS and Wii. Based on M. Night Shyamalan’s despised live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, The Last Airbender sees players take on the role of both Aang and Zuko as they journey through the events of the movie. Critics were just as harsh on the game as they were with the movie, giving it very low scores based on some basic level design and dull, run-of-the-mill gameplay. Today, Avatar is mostly known in the video game world through its recent crossover with Smite, but as new projects start to crop up, maybe the future will hold better video game successes for Avatar: The Last Airbender.

One can talk about the famous American animated series Avatar the legend of Aang, which has received about 20 awards and nominations during its existence, for a very long time. Appearing on the screens, he won the hearts of millions of children and adolescents, not only boys, but also girls. Through the efforts of talented animators Michael Dante DiMartino and Brian Konietzko, an incredibly interesting mixture of anime and fantasy with elements of Asian philosophy, and spectacular scenes in the spirit of the best action movies using various types of martial arts, turned out to be. At the same time, in terms of the scope of what is happening, the story of the avatar is in no way inferior to such epic masterpieces as Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. Since 2005, this fascinating story has captured the hearts of many. In just a few years, a lot of souvenirs, toys, pictures and, of course, computer games avatar the legend of Aang appeared. And although it is believed that this anime is designed for a children’s audience, there are also plenty of adult viewers.

A world that needs an avatar

Numerous exciting adventures, and not quite the usual way of life of the invented world are of particular interest to the audience. Spirits, magicians, magical animals and mere mortals easily coexist here. Each of them refers to one of the four elements: fire, earth, water or air. Magicians simply live among ordinary people, but at the same time they have a special gift that allows them to control the forces of their elements. And only an avatar from above is given to use all four elements at the same time. It is he who is the link between people and the world of spirits. The Avatar is mortal, but at the same time he has the ability to be reborn and communicate with all his previous incarnations. The cyclical order of rebirth is predetermined from above. After the representative of the tribe of water, the magician of the kingdom of the earth will become the avatar, then this mission will go to the fire and air representatives in turn.

By the will of fate, after his fiery predecessor Roku, a young airbender named Aang became the avatar. It just so happened that, on the one hand, he is only a twelve-year-old boy, and on the other, he has been the chosen one for more than a hundred years. It is on his actions and abilities that the restoration of the world depends, which the fairy-tale people have not seen over the past hundred years because of the war unleashed by the ruler of the fire people Sozin in order to seize territories occupied by representatives of other elements.

The adventures that befell young Aang are interesting and very dangerous. Together with friends who freed the boy and his flying buffalo from the ice block, the air magician will have to go in search of teachers who can teach him the missing types of magical art. On their way, friends will always encounter representatives of various elements, help magicians and ordinary people to resist the treachery and evil caused by the fiery ruler.

Even metal magic, which Toph invents on her own, becomes subject to her.

The animated series “Avatar. The Legend of Aang. Created based on various oriental teachings, but not completely based on any of them, the animated series brought high ratings to the Nickelodeon television channel that released it, and the Avatar games were created based on it and even the sequel Avatar was filmed. The Legend of Korra.

Avatar Universe

The fictional world of the animated series is subject to the four elements, traditional for Asian philosophy. However, elemental magic is not available to all mortals! Each of the peoples worshiping some one primordial essence has only a few magicians — those who own special wushu techniques that command the forces of the elements. In order to master magical techniques, a young magician has to study a lot, but one cannot do without an innate gift. Children endowed with these abilities are identified at birth, and from an early age they are taught martial and magical arts.

However, there is only one person in the whole world who can master the magic of all four elements. Dying, he is reborn again — already in another tribe, in accordance with a long-established sequence. Among newborn babies, the Avatar is determined in the same way that the followers of Lamaism determine the new incarnation of the Dalai Lama: the baby must choose from the proposed toys those that will determine his future calling. It is believed that for the game the Avatar will choose not children’s toys, but elements of the elements.

In addition to the ability to use any kind of magic, the Avatar is also characterized by the ability to go into a special «Avatar state», in which he can use the experience of his previous incarnations, and also significantly increase his magical power. This state can be activated independently, as a result of the activation of the self-defense mechanism, or it can be caused at the request of the Avatar himself. In this state, he is practically invulnerable, however, if the enemy still manages to kill him, then the Avatar will not be able to be reborn again.

The main function of the Avatar is to maintain the balance of power in the world of elemental magic. Being the most powerful magician in the world, the Avatar is almost always able to defeat those who want to upset the balance and seize territories belonging to the people of another element. Only cunning is a strong enough weapon against the Avatar’s magic.

The Last Airbender

The Avatar Games are based on the events of two animated series, each of which is divided into several seasons. Avatar. The Last Airbender is the first animated series in the series. It tells about the fate of Aang — the son of air nomads, who was destined to be born the chosen one.

Someone would gladly give half their lives for such abilities, but not Aang. He dreams of being an ordinary teenager, and is very worried that his great responsibility to humanity is forcing him to abandon ordinary life. That is why one day he escapes from the house riding a flying bison, together with whom, after the disaster, he is walled up in a huge iceberg in a state of deep suspended animation.

Meanwhile, this episode ultimately saves his life, because the owner of the Fire, Sozin, just sets out to kill the Avatar, and for this he slaughters the entire people of the Air Nomads … Except for Aang, whom he never managed to find among the ocean ice .

When, after a hundred years, the still very young Avatar is rescued from the icy captivity, he will have to quickly learn the magic of the missing three elements (after all, he knows only his “native” Air magic) and prepare for the battle with the Supreme Fire Mages who have not abandoned plans to capture the world . ..

The Legend of Korra

After Aang’s death, Korra, a girl from the Southern Water Tribe, becomes the new Avatar. At the beginning of the series, she is seventeen years old, and it is at this age that she will have to face the first serious problems that have swallowed up Republic City. The city was once erected by Aang as a place where magicians of different elements and people deprived of magical powers could coexist peacefully, and was originally supposed to look like a paradise …

However, nothing is good for a long time. People still hate magicians — they hate them so much that a whole group arises under the leadership of the mysterious Amon, which masters the Tai Lee technique — blocking Qi, which deprives magicians of their strength.

When confronted by Amon, Korra loses all of her magical abilities, except for some reason, Air magic. It seems that the Avatar, already out of the game, is saved by its special nature: the interconnectedness of various incarnations. The spirit of Aang comes to the rescue: he not only returns the lost abilities, but also teaches the girl a new skill — Energy magic.

The history of the creation of the series

Avatar was created by Michael Dante Dirmantino and Brian Konietzko — comrades who have been involved since their studies. The first draft of the Avatar depicted an adult Aang, but then the guys realized that in the form of a child, the new hero would have more success.

They decided to create the series based on Asian mythology, but without being tied to any one particular line. Even the magic of the Elements, depicted not in the form of traditional wand waving, but in the form of martial arts, each element has its own. Water Magicians use taijiyuan techniques, for Earth magicians, hungars are closer, Air magic is depicted in the form of baguazhang, and Fire magic is depicted as North Shaolin kung fu. This gave more scope for imagination for the artists and increased the spectacle of the animated series and the Avatar games.
