Tekken 7 Characters Roster | DashFight

It’s wild to think that Tekken 7 has been with us since 2015. The latest entry in the storied franchise was released with all the fanfare that the game of this caliber is entitled to, and it didn’t disappoint.

As is always the case with the series, Tekken 7 has first arrived on Arcades full two years before the game saw the console and PC release. Even so, everyone’s gaze quickly shifted to it from the previous entry that was Tekken Tag Tournament 2. The seventh mainline game featured improved visuals, and tighter gameplay and controls, thanks to the decision to move from the proprietary engine and make the game on Unreal Engine 4. Initially, the Tekken 7 roster consisted only of 36 fighters – a decent number further boosted by the DLC releases. Now the game has 51 playable characters.

More than half of those were previously featured in the series. Tekken 7 legacy characters include Alisa, Asuka, Bob, Bryan, Devil Jin, Dragunov, Eddy, Feng, Heihachi, Hwoarang, Jin, Kazuya, King, Kuma, Lars, Lee, Leo, Lili, Law, Miguel, Nina, Panda, Paul, Steve, Xiaoyu, and Yoshimitsu. Eliza, technically also a returning character, made her main game debut as a pre-order DLC.

We also got ten new fighters to go alongside the legacy ones. The New Tekken 7 character list features Akuma, Claudio, Gigas, Jack-7, Josie, Katarina, Kazumi, Lucky Chloe, Master Raven, and Shaheen.

One of those newcomers, namely Akuma, might be familiar to many from a different series – Street Fighter. He’s the second-ever guest character in the series after Gon in Tekken 3. Since then, there have been more crossover fighters added with the follow-up DLCs. Tekken 7 guest characters are Geese, Noctis, Negan, and the aforementioned Akuma.

The initial success prompted the developers to start thinking about more DLCs beyond the planned one wave. This gave them the opportunity to bring back some of the crowd favorites and create new striking fighters filling different niches and archetypes. Tekken 7 DLC characters include Anna, Lei, Marduk, Armor King, Julia, Zafina, Ganryu, Leroy, Fahkumram, Lidia, and Kunimitsu.

Overall, it would be fair to say that all Tekken characters are unique or, at the very least, offer something that none other do. This makes the challenging task of selecting the one you want to play somewhat easier. You only have to imagine what kind of fighter you prefer, which martial arts do they practice, and how do they look – and there’s a big chance that Tekken 7 has just the character for you.

This DashFight page is a complete list of all the Tekken 7 characters and their essential traits and abilities. By clicking on any of them, you will be brought into their profile, where you can read their biography, check VODs, read the gameplay guides, or watch our Guides on DashFight’s Youtube channel.

Tekken: Bloodline — All Major Featured Characters

The best fights are personal, and most fights in Tekken are. Way back in 1994, the first entry in the series was released, and it’s still going strong, with new entries, characters, and fighting styles. Tekken features one of the most realistic combat styles in games — except for some peculiar characters, that is.

Netflix is now adapting the iconic series into a 3D anime, starting from the events of the third game. With so many characters involved in Tekken, it’s anyone’s guess who will and won’t be in the show. But some of them are already confirmed. Spoilers for Tekken: Bloodline ahead!

Updated by Lucas Olah on September 2, 2022: The show is already out, at long last. However, this means speculation time is over, along with only having trailers to talk about who is or isn’t on the show. With that said, rather than talking about who was confirmed through trailers, it’s time to simply straight-up list everyone that appears in the show.

15/15 Cameos

Sadly, this series has too big of a roster to feature in a short six-episode anime, which means that even though a lot of characters technically appear, they only do so for brief shots, either as contestants in the tournament or past characters whose images quickly appear.

The extra contestants include Yoshimitsu, Anna Williams, Feng Wei, Craig Marduk, Marshall Law (instead of Forest Law), Kuma, Lei Wulong, and Steve Fox.

Baek Doo San, Lee Chaolan, Wang Jinrei, and King 1 are also seen glimpsed when Heihachi is researching fighters from across the world.

14/15 Doctor Bosconovitch

One of the weirdest playable characters ever displayed in this series, Doctor B. was a secret playable character for Tekken 3. He is a scientist, and even though his appearances don’t tend to be big, the consequences of his experiments can often be.

In the anime, he only appears through video calls talking to Heihachi Mishima, where he helps the head of Mishima Zaibatsu to capture Ogre. The anime doesn’t talk about his motivations, however.

13/15 Hwoarang

A classic fighter from the series, He is a Taekwondo fighter known for his powerful kicks. He debuted alongside Jin in the third entry of the series, where he is essentially a rival.

Both characters share this rivalry after Jin defeated him in a fight. Still, that won’t be the only reason he shows up. Ogre, the main baddy of Tekken 3 (we’ll get to him), was responsible for attacking Hwoarang’s mentor, Baek Doo San. Hwoarang is hardly the only one out for vengeance, though.

12/15 Ling Xiaoyu

A cheerful and beloved character, Xiaoyu is one of the coolest characters to control in the games due to her unique play style. She’s also a bubbly, fun, and charismatic character to have on board.

She also comes from Tekken 3, so her appearance in Bloodlines, which is mostly an adaptation of the game’s story, though amazing, isn’t surprising. She, however, has a rather weird plot in the third game, running away from her parents and entering the tournament with the sole purpose of building a theme park. She’s also Heihachi’s ward, giving her an interesting connection to the series’ big bad. Though the ward part is not mentioned, she does state in the show that she wants to win the tournament in order to build the theme park.

11/15 Nina Williams

One of the biggest characters in the entire series, Nina is an assassin who is often helping one of the main Mishimas in their endeavors or trying to eliminate each other.

As expected from an assassin, she doesn’t have personal goals in the anime. Instead, she only wants the prize money for herself. Regardless, it’s an awesome addition to the roster. As a fun aside, she’s one of only a few Tekken characters to get their own spin-off game, with Death By Degrees launching on the PS2 in 2005.

10/15 Julia Chang

The daughter of an old fan favorite, Julia is one of the minor characters presented in the anime. Her appearance does have connections to the main baddie, as her tribe was responsible to protect an important amulet related to the story.

She goes after said amulet in the third game, but it’s best to keep it vague to avoid spoilers. Regardless, She’s also a fan favorite, appearing in every subsequent game. It might be a bit weird seeing her and Ganryu, and Ganryu has an almost stalker-like crush on Julia that is most definitely not reciprocated.

9/15 Jin Kazama

Jin is practically the protagonist of the entire Tekken series, so it makes sense for him to be in the anime based on his debut. A good man who learns how to fight from both his mother and his grandfather, he goes on a quest for vengeance against Ogre for killing his mother.

Devil Jin, who is treated as a different character in terms of gameplay, will also appear in the series, as he is shown in the teaser and also had a major role in the third game. It will be quite nostalgic to see his younger self once more.

8/15 Jun Kazama

Jin’s mother was introduced in the second game, and had a relationship with Kazuya Mishima. However, there weren’t a lot of details about their relationship, and the anime also keeps their relationship pretty vague as well.

She trains her son how to fight and how to control his rage. She teaches Jin to fight only for peace, since she knows about his bloodline through Kazuya. It is her death that sparks the quest for revenge Jin embarks upon. She probably won’t be around for long, as we already know her fate.

7/15 Heihachi Mishima

Head of the Mishima Zaibatsu and grandad of the year, Heihachi is the one who trains Jin so he can have his revenge. Despite his charisma, he is one of the worst people in Tekken, valuing nothing but strength. He can also be very sadistic, and tends to help only if it serves his own agenda.

RELATED: Video Game Characters Who Can Catch Bullets

Without saying much about his intentions in the third game, malice and a very weird sense of humor can be expected from him. Prepare for amazing action scenes though, since he can battle people with actual powers with nothing but his bare hands — and feet, since he’s quite a kicker.

6/15 Kazuya Mishima

Briefly seen in the teaser, Kazuya Mishima is Heihachi’s son and Jin’s father. He was the protagonist of the very first Tekken game, and the antagonist of the second: a boy who made a deal with the devil to get revenge on his father, he’s quite a menacing figure himself.

His role in the show is more of a shadowing figure for our hero since, during the events of Tekken 3, he’s a bit busy being dead. However, his deal with the Devil affects his genes and complicates Jin’s life too. He does appear in flashbacks and recordings, but only so briefly. If the anime gets a continuation, he will likely come back, as he did in Tekken 4.

5/15 Ogre

The big bad evil guy from the third game, Ogre, the God of Fighting, is a powerful creature accidentally released from his slumber. He seeks powerful martial artists to fight against and improve his own skills. This leads him into a rampage that ends the lives of a few characters from the previous games — Jun being one of them.

He’s a force to be reckoned with, and even has a powerful transformation to use if things get tough. He appears very imposing, withstanding attacks and knocking people over with ease.

4/15 Ganryu

An interesting addition to the anime, Ganryu debuted in the very first Tekken game as a young, strong, and arrogant sumo wrestler. He chose to participate in the King of the Iron First Tournament after his behavior got him kicked out of sumo tournaments.

RELATED: Character’s Backstories And Fighting Styles From Tekken 1-3

However, what makes his addition to the anime curious is the fact that he doesn’t appear in the third game — the one the show is based on. His role here, as a bodyguard for Heihachi, is a new take on the character.

3/15 Paul Phoenix

A true veteran of the series, Paul has been in every main entry of the game. One of the strongest characters gameplay-wise, he is a good person who’s willing to scheme for money. He’s also a bit too overconfident and short-tempered for his own good.

Despite being an opponent to Jin, he offers an interesting mentor relationship, being one of the few who knew Kazuya and doesn’t treat Jin like trash. Their dynamic is well written, and his portrayal is more serious compared to current games, but very reminiscent of his appearances in the old games. Still, he does show some sense of humor and is a bit cocky.

2/15 Leroy Smith

Another interesting character choice for the anime, Leroy is one of the most recent additions to Tekken, introduced as a DLC character in Tekken 7. He lost his family at a very young age due to the actions of the Mishima Zaibatsu, and in the game, seeks to understand why so many bad things are caused by it.

However, since the series will take place during the events of Tekken 3, his appearance here is quite curious. His backstory will likely remain the same, and his apperance and story shows Jin a darker side of the Mishima bloodline.

1/15 King 2

A fan favorite, mostly because of his mask and unbelievably long grapple attacks, King 2 also appears in the anime. What many people don’t know is that the King mantle has passed down between characters, a topic that is also discussed in the anime, and the King featured in the first Tekken games is not the same from Tekken 3 onwards.

King 2 is in a similar situation as Jin; he lost his mentor, King 1, at the hands of Ogre, and even received training from King 1’s mentor, Armor King. One curious detail about the character is that he only speaks via Jaguar growls in the game and, though you can hear regular human grunts throughout the anime, he still doesn’t speak.

History[]

The World Martial Arts Tournament draws to a close, prize money is awarded to the fighter who can defeat Heihachi Mishima in the final round of the competition. The tournament is sponsored by the giant financial group Mishima Zaibatsu. There are eight fighters that remain after winning deathmatches around the world, and the winner of the tournament is crowned King of Iron Fist. Only one will stand a chance of defeating Heihachi and taking home the prize money and fame. The player can initially choose one of these eight fighters, each with their own personal reasons for participating in the tournament, aside from the prize money.

Kazuya Mishima is the main character. The biological son of Heihachi, he was thrown into a ravine by his tyrannical father when he was five years old. Heihachi, believing his son was too weak to ever inherit his conglomerate, decided that if he were really strong enough, he could survive the fall and rise back up. Kazuya barely survived the fall, which left him with a visible scar on his chest. Fueled by hatred for his father, he enters the tournament to seek revenge.

Notably, only the default characters Jack, Kazuya, King, Paul, Law, Michelle, Nina, and Yoshimitsu had endings, and only in the sequel did all the characters have their own endings.

The true ending of the game culminates in a climactic battle between Kazuya and Heihachi, which ultimately results in Kazuya’s ultimate victory. After bringing his father to the same cliff he was thrown off as a child, Kazuya takes revenge by throwing his father off the cliff.

Japanese leadership[]

A large-scale martial arts tournament is taking place on the world stage. This tournament was eventually called the «Iron Fist King Tournament» because only those with the strongest Iron Fist or «Tekken» stand at the top. Along with the rumors that it was sponsored by a huge conglomerate, it was also reported that everyone had a surprisingly huge winning prize and all kinds of fighters were invited to participate. The tournament is reported to be hosted by the Mishima Zaibatsu, a major conglomerate, and that the prize pool is surprisingly large, attracting many different fighters. Eight fighters survived preliminary death fights around the world. However, not every fighter aspires to the title of the strongest. .. With so many thoughts swirling around, the mysterious «King of Iron Fist Tournament» is about to reach its climax, but which of these fighters is the strongest? And what is the true purpose of this tournament…?!

Gameplay[]

Tekken was one of the earliest 3D animated fighting games that used many of the concepts found in Sega’s Virtua Fighter. As with Virtua Fighter 2 released around the same time, Tekken was also one of the very first 3D animated console video games to run at 60fps (with the exception of the European PAL release).

As in many fighting games, players choose a character from the provided ones and engage in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. Tekken is somewhat different from other hand-to-hand combat games. Traditional fighting games are usually played with buttons corresponding to the strength of the attack, such as hard hit or weak hit. Tekken, however, dedicates a button to each of the fighter’s limbs, making learning special attacks a more intuitive process. The player can watch the animation on the screen and determine the appropriate command: if the character kicks low with the right foot, the move will most likely be performed by pressing down and kicking with the right foot, or a similar variation.

Traditional fighting games such as the Street Fighter series require commands to be entered as quickly and accurately as possible, while Tekken slows down the action by focusing on rhythm, strategy and deception rather than speed.

Interesting Facts[]

  • This Tekken game is notable for these differences:
    • All arenas are outdoors.
    • This is the only game in which Nina Williams fights barefoot.
    • Subbosses and final boss have no endings.
    • The same music is used for the ending of each character.
    • Arcade mode is consistent with the original arcade game, allowing the player to reach the highest time without the need for the game’s default settings.
    • The only game where unlockable characters don’t have endings.
  • Demon Kazuya can be unlocked by defeating the Galaga mini-game, which can be played before loading the actual game.
  • Tekken was originally supposed to be called « Rave War «, but the development team later renamed the game to Tekken.
  • Marshall Law’s son, Forest Law, and wife, Mrs. Law. They can be seen in Yoshimitsu’s ending.
    • This is the first time Forest Lo has appeared, he is seen as a child in the finale.
    • The child version of Forest Lo wears a white T-shirt and yellow trousers.
  • Marshall Law was originally supposed to be called the Dragon. In the arcade version, the voice clip of the announcer saying «Dragon Law» still exists in the data, but is never heard. The sound clip is used in the game, but cuts off early to only say «Lo». The PlayStation and Tekken 5 versions use pre-recorded sound effects, so the unused part is missing.
  • King’s ending features real digitized children, a technique that would later be used again in his Tekken 2 ending.
  • In the PlayStation version, the stadium stage has a large screen in the background showing the fight.
  • If a memory card with completed save data is inserted and a disc is inserted (with cinema mode unlocked), the player can view Tekken endings and listen to the game’s audio in the cinema’s Jukebox menu; this also works for Tekken 2 .
  • In Jack’s ending, the machine connected to Jack is called System 11, which is the name of the arcade equipment used in both Tekken and Tekken 2 .
  • With the exception of Wang, the voices of the boss characters are identical to the voices of the other characters.
    • Kazuya Mishima and Lee Chaolan (with some voice clips)
    • King, Armored King, Kuma
    • Yoshimitsu and Kunimitsu
    • Nina Williams and Anna Williams
    • Jack, Prototype Jack, Ganryu, and Heihachi Mishima
    • The reason for this is that Namco didn’t have enough money to hire different voice actors to voice the boss characters and decided to keep the voice actors they have.
    • Additionally, Lo Marshall, Paul Phoenix, & Michelle Chang are the only characters where the boss characters don’t share their voices.
  • In the arcade version, after choosing a fighter, their facial expressions changed, as in Virtua Fighter .
    • Yoshimitsu and Kunimitsu use the same character selection animation.
  • The background music of each scene, with the exception of the Venice scene, will later be reworked into Tekken 2 . Some tracks also returned in Tekken 4 (also TTT2 and TK7 ), including Venice.
  • The intro featuring Kazuya contains a remix of the music in the PlayStation version, but cannot be changed to the original arcade music, unlike the arcade intro in Tekken 2 .
  • If Heihachi Mishima is selected, he must fight all sub-bosses; the fighting characters are in a specific order: Kunimitsu, Kuma, Wang Jingrei, Ganryu, Li Chaolan, Prototype Jack, Armored King, Anna Williams, and Demon Kazuya.
  • The player can listen to all the music in the game with a CD player.
  • The cover has a blue figure in addition to the eight default playable characters. Based on some of the illustrations that show most of the cover, this appears to be a prototype version of Jack.
  • In the PlayStation version, due to weaker system performance, the character animations on the selected character have been removed and their character still images are either the beginning or the end, with the exception of Heihachi Mishima, who has a slightly different image. Also, the only boss characters whose names have been revealed are Wang, Li, and Heihachi. Armored King, Prototype Jack, and Demon Kazuya use the same patterns as their default characters King, Jack, and Kazuya Mishima respectively. With other characters, the announcer simply says that you won .
  • Paul Phoenix is the only character in the game that does not have a clone as a boss, although some of his moves are shared with other bosses, notably Phoenix Crusher, Hammer Strike to Power Strike, and Double Jump Strike.
  • Yoshimitsu and Kunimitsu share the same winning poses.
  • Anna Williams, Armored King, Ganryu, Heihachi Mishima, Kuma, Li Chaolan, Prototype Jack, and Wang Jinrei only have one victory pose instead of two.
  • In the arcade version, only eight default characters can be selected, with only CPU players being bosses, as in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior .
  • The arcade version has different costumes for King, Law, and Ganryu that are not available in the PlayStation version: King’s second costume consists of a white shirt and red pants instead of a blue shirt and white pants; Law’s first costume is all yellow with DRAGON 03 on the back (Dragon is a remnant of his pre-sale name), and Ganryu’s only costume consists of black shorts.
  • In the arcade version, there is only one costume for the boss characters, the second costume (the kick button) is exclusive to the PlayStation version.
  • The arcade version has significantly fewer boss moves, with most boss characters having nearly identical move sets for the selected characters, with only a few extra moves borrowed from other fighters. Ganryu is the only boss character in the arcade version that has a unique move, namely the open palm combo.
  • This is the only game in the classic PlayStation trilogy that does not have character-represented stages.
