SWAT 4 for PC is another installment in a series of tactical action games depicting the work of SWAT. SWAT 4 was developed by Irrational Games, a studio popular for such acclaimed titles as System Shock 2, Tribes: Vengeance or Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich. The main mode included in SWAT 4, that is, the career, gives an opportunity to lead a team of police officers belonging to this elite unit. The game offers 16 dangerous missions and those require the player to rescue civilians that are held hostage by terrorists, or to apprehend an extremely dangerous criminal. The game doesn’t depict recruits becoming elite SWAT operatives over time; rather, it just confronts the player with subsequent missions, and the job is to complete them in the best possible way. During a pre-mission briefing, the player becomes acquainted with the details of the operation; afterwards, the player chooses the weaponry and equipment for their team – these are the last steps before the mission begins. Apart from the career mode, the game features the training mode, as well as two other variants, namely instant action and quick missions.

Mechanics

The creators of SWAT 4 pointed out that their game definitely belongs to the group of realistic simulations. The player will find here a wide variety of weapons that real SWAT teams actually have at their disposal (Colt M-4 rifle, Benelli M4 Super 90 shotgun, smoke grenades, gas grenades, etc.), as well as a large amount of equipment used by the terrorists (AK-47 rifle for example). The same applies to different kinds of additional equipment, such as bulletproof vests, explosives for opening doors, or special cameras, such as Opti-1. Before each mission, the players are totally free to chose their equipment. The devs from Irrational Games decided on Epic’s Unreal Engine when creating SWAT 4 – the game utilizes the video effects provided by DirectX 9.0, as well as Pixel Shader 3.0, which was one of the latest technological advancements in video gaming at the time of the release. On the other hand, the acclaimed Havoc engine was used to represent the physics in the virtual world, including aspects such as bullets’ flight trajectory. What is important however, the creators did not implement bullet rebound effects deliberately, because the presence of those could result in too much collateral damage (this applies especially to the game’s multiplayer component).

In SWAT 4 for PC, the player can participate in the operations directly by controlling particular team members (one can switch between them). However, one can also control the team remotely, using cameras and microphones attached to the operatives’ helmets. Compared to the previous installment, SWAT 3, the game utilizes a completely new user interface. Although the equivalent from SWAT 3 was very flexible in terms of configuration (which was to the orthodox fans’ liking), it did scare off the less advanced players. The new interface works on the basis of text commands – for instance, when the player stumbles on a locked door and clicks on it, a menu containing different actions shows up. From here, the player can choose to pick the lock or to blow up the door for example. Once the player has chosen an option, the team members begin to perform the action.

What deserves approval in SWAT 4 for PC as well is the AI of the operatives, bandits and civilians. The SWAT members move in accordance with the principles of fighting armed criminals in closed quarters: they avoid non-covered spots, they move near walls, remain watchful in different directions, cover one another, etc. Sniper teams also give cover to the entry team; the player can take control over the marksmen, who cover different sections of the map, and eliminate criminals if they decide it’s neccesary.

Game modes

Apart from the singleplayer component, SWAT 4 for PC offers three multiplayer modes, as well as the cooperative campaign mode. Additionally, the game features a special editor, which allows the player to create their own assignments and modify the existing ones.

Game score 8.535 / 10 calculated out of 4363 players’ votes.

Introducing “secret agents” into client companies, the Amiveo startup sees problems that ordinary consultants would not have identified: productivity can drop due to the fault of the storekeeper, whom everyone is afraid of, or because of the forgetfulness of sales managers

A Russian company has a problem. An employee of a fairly high rank criticized the instructions of the management, inciting other employees to sabotage them. It was almost impossible to openly dismiss him — formally there was nothing to complain about, besides, he was not at all going to leave his familiar place and, most likely, would sue, damaging the reputation of the employer. However, a solution was found. A person was introduced into the company under the guise of a new employee, whose task was to convince the problematic director to quit of his own free will, since he was supposedly too good for this place. He did it in about six months. The «oppositionist» left in full confidence that it was his own decision, and the company wished him success and exhaled. After a while, the «newcomer» also quit — and in fact, the consulting company Amiveo, for which he worked, completed a complex project.

Call of Duty 4 demo experience

World War II gave way to modern realities and a hypothetical conflict involving Russian and Arab terrorists — that’s all the cardinal changes. The rest is just raised to a qualitatively new level.

On October 11, a demo version of one of the most anticipated shooters of this year, Call of Duty 4, hit the net. as well as weapons and equipment.

The Call of Duty 4 demo features an entire level in the Iraqi city of Al-Assad at night. Modern warfare performed by Infinity Wards seems to have descended from the screens of documentary chronicles. Burning wrecks of cars, houses eaten away by shells, brave Americans running through the streets in camouflage, and windows of houses snarling with shots. The action begins immediately after the spectacular dive of the camera from behind the clouds into the eyes of the hero. The first losses among the fighters, screams, shots, explosions. Enemies pour in dozens, throw grenades, shoot accurately, cover each other. The allies constantly flicker in front, side, behind, shout encouraging phrases and die heroically to make way for the next actors. In general, Call of Duty trademark chaos with spectacular performances and the Hollywood atmosphere of battles is with us again.

The setting of the Second World War gave way to our time, the Germans were replaced by Russians and Arabs, the weapon models were redrawn, the graphics were slightly screwed up — the fourth part differs from its predecessors only in small things. Our hero still actively regenerates any wounds, can carry two types of weapons, hit with a butt and throw two types of grenades. Smoke, to match the era, was replaced by light. A great solution when you unexpectedly break into a room full of terrorists.

The weapon used is modern, but because of the arcade shooting model, when the accuracy is absolute, and the spread is small, the difference with BOB-brothers from the second and third parts is somehow not felt. Unless it looks stylish — it’s still nice to run around with the AK-47 and M4A1, instead of the cannons of the last century, which were disgusted by the first three parts.

Crowds of enemies are bringing down exemplary death. In places — continuous streams, warming up the already hot atmosphere of the battle. The walls are now perfectly shot through, which adds pepper and makes you not linger in one place. It’s nice that now no one is holding back the allies. Those themselves are excellent at fighting, destroying terrorists and skillfully covering the back of the hero. The only thing is that they are not in a hurry to get ahead, so that the player has something to do at the level.

What has changed is the job density. In a miserable 10 minutes of passing the demo version, I had to clear the building from terrorists, destroy enemy equipment from the FGM-148 homing gun, repel the enemies from the allied tank, blow up the anti-aircraft gun and call for air support. And all this — under constant fire, with demonstrative scenes unfolding, such as a helicopter crash or a fight between two soldiers. Despite a number of simplifications (the game is still far from a simulator), it feels the spirit of a real military operation.

Call of Duty 4 is one of those games that you need to see in dynamics. Screenshots do not reflect even a fraction of the real state of affairs due to the developers’ enthusiasm for post-effects, an abundance of particles, smoke, great animation and physics. The fighters are no longer pieces of wood from the second part, and not rag dolls from the third. They behave completely like humans. Every movement, every gesture and spasm smoothly flow into each other without breaks, without falsehood. The wounded enemy crawls away to cover with the last of his strength, the soldiers easily roll over the hoods of cars, knock out the doors and press themselves against the walls. For a short time, Stranglehold could be proud of its colorful, staged deaths in the name of John Woo. What the enemies do here when they catch bullets is a pleasure to look through the lens of an optical sight. They react differently and beautifully to hits on different parts of the body — it is a pleasure to kill such responsive guys. Physics works to make shooting even more spectacular. An exploding car scatters wheels in different directions, parts fly off, sparks fly off, clouds of smoke rise. The fire dances under the gusts of wind. And bullets whistle around, leaving shader tracers. Enemies flash by, partners scream and support with fire. Where can static screenshots convey such beauty.

Yes, the textures and backgrounds could be a little clearer. And the picture itself is more contrasting and colorful. The graphics in Call of Duty 3, which never made it to PC, were better, thanks to advanced lighting effects and excellent execution of vegetation — 3D grass is not found in every project. But, alas, consoles dictate their own laws. And if in one place you have to add, then in another — cut.

To spoil the life of PC users a little more, the developers abandoned the hardware support for sound — there is not even EAX 3, as in Call of Duty 2. The actors play well, everything shoots and bangs as it should. But there is no sound depth. Volume is not felt. However, lately this has become a disease of almost all modern projects — Creative has lost ground to built-in sound cards, and its products are no longer popular.

Analysis

World War II gave way to modern realities and a hypothetical conflict involving Russian and Arab terrorists — that’s all the cardinal changes. The rest is just raised to a qualitatively new level. Unsurpassed realistic animation of soldiers, juicy post-effects, smoke, dust, sparks, screams of the wounded and cheerful chatter of brothers in arms. The chaos of war captures from the first seconds and twists and turns, makes you dive from cover to cover, mow down enemies in droves and enjoy spectacular performances. Disappointment is caused only by weak textures and sloppy painted backs.
