Update 7/19/20 — sm64nxBuilder Released
sm64nxBuilder makes setting up to play the game much easier. You will no longer need to install MSYS, Python, or Visual Studio to compile the game. It’s based on the sm64nx repo, so mods can be loaded via pak files either manually, or by using the included downloader in the sm64nxBuilder app. It also works as a mod manager by letting you enable/disable installed mods before playing sm64.

Mario 64 is one of the easiest games to just turn on and play for any amount of time. 5 minutes, 2 hours, whatever. The game needs no introduction, really, it’s as essential to 3D games as its predecessors were to 2D ones. What makes my most recent playthrough unique, however, is my discovery of the PC port and its wonderful modded content.
One of the most appealing factors of this PC port is the fact that there’s an subset of its modding community who are dedicated to preserving the art style of the game’s concept/promotional art. Seriously, these character models look nearly exactly like the models on the boxart and in the manual.
What really impresses me now is the implementation of global illumination and ray tracing into the game! It seriously brings the original art style to life in a way that no modern Mario game could ever hope to achieve:
Applying all of this great stuff, plus some HD textures and HUD elements has brought the game back to life substantially more than Nintendo’s $60 3D All Stars could ever hope to achieve. Mind, my PC isnt powerful enough to be able to use global illumination and RTX, but the game still looks really damn good. There are a few audio bugs here and there, but it’s a damn fine port
Anyone interested in downloading this port should do some digging around the official website:

everything about the decompilation project is super cool. One day I’ll grab it to play the game again. Though in my case, I think I’ll stick with the original models. I’ve seen a bunch of fan-made Mario models, and they all look off artisticly. I think my ideal way of playing this game would be with the original models, widescreen display and maybe ray-tracing. Updated controls and HD UI too.

Is Render96 a visually cohesive experience yet? Don’t want to bother setting it up if it’s like 45% redone models or something like that.

I think? I can’t say for sure but I’m using Render96 models and textures and it looks great to me.

The game was released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64 and is a classic to this day.
Princess Peach invited our plumber to visit, but Bowser stole her as always. At the same time, he stole the energy stars and scattered them around the worlds. The more stars, the more levels will be available. There are 120 stars in total in the game, but it is not necessary to collect them all.
There is no timer on the levels now (it was in the previous parts, except for the second), which means that you can fully enjoy the locations. Oh yes, the locations themselves are not just linear levels, but small open worlds. Each level has several stars and hints for getting them. For the first star on the first level, it was necessary to defeat the boss, and for the second star, to outrun the turtle.
The tasks are varied, which allows you to stretch the pleasure of the level. There are also hidden tasks and you will have to sweat with them.
As the game progresses, you can get different abilities. You can get a flying cap and fly, you can get a metal cap and walk underwater, you can get an invisible cap and walk through walls and enemies.
Mario can jump on enemies, punch and kick, jump kick, grab and throw objects and enemies, sit and jump from this position, dance, crawl, flip, do a high triple jump, jump far, jump from walls , slide on the stomach and squat, swim, drive on the shell, fly on an owl.
Various theories circulated around the game. One of these was about Luigi. Fans were disappointed that he was not in the game, but they found this in a haunted area:
Fans agreed that it says «L is real 2401». Many thought that 2041 was the number of stars needed to discover Luigi. Nintendo itself claims that Luigi is not in the game, but in 2004 they added him to Super Mario 64 DS for the Nintendo DS. You could also play as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi and even Wario.
The game was excellently received and commercially successful. As of 2003, it has sold over 11 million copies.
The game is very popular in speedrunning. It took speedrunner Cheese 1 hour 37 minutes and 50 seconds to collect all 120 stars on the original Nintendo 64
Should I play Super Mario 64? My answer is no. Better to play Super Mario 64 DS. There, the graphics are nicer, the camera is better, there are more characters, and in general there are 150 stars, not 120.
Nintendo 64 and Nintendo DS emulators have existed for a long time, and any bucket will pull them. You should not put an end to the game because of the graphics, the plot, or because it is «childish». These are the only aspects that need to put an end to the game, right?
Non-game information
Why not in the «Nintendo» subsite? The answer is simple. There are people sitting there who played all this. Why not in «Retro»? The «Games» subsite has a pretty big reach, and I wanted as many people as possible to know about this cool game.
If most people like my under-review, then I will probably do something similar for other cult games.
