Whenever I pick up a new shooter title like the latest Call of Duty or Star Wars Battlefront II, the farthest thing from my mind is playing the campaign mode. Like many other players, I typically purchase these games because of the online multiplayer modes.
Activision, the publisher of the latest Call of Duty, recognizes this desire of a large portion of its core audience and provides players the option to prioritize downloading the multiplayer section of the game first before the campaign mode. Personally, I have yet to play the campaign mode of Black Ops Cold War and doubt I’ll play in the future.
About a month ago, I wrote a blog on my experiences playing the classic Star Wars Battlefront II game, the one from 2005, not 2017, and it sparked my interest in attempting the campaign in the newest title. After all, according to my PlayStation trophy list, 53. 9% of players earned the trophy associated with completing the first campaign mission, but only 29% earned the trophy associated with completing the last mission.

Star Wars Battlefront II’s campaign follows the story of Iden Versio, the leader of Inferno Squad, a special Imperial task force, who is sent to the forest moon of Endor just before the second Death Star blows up. The game has you mowing down Rebels attempting to destroy the shield generator protecting the Death Star, but, as the story goes, Versio witnesses its destruction.
You continue to kill Rebels for a bit, saying they deserved it for betraying the Empire. The following sequence in the story baffles me to this day for character development.
Versio’s commander commences Operation: Cinder, a ploy to showcase the Emperor and the Empire’s might by firing space lasers at planets, including her homeworld, a planet loyal to the Empire. Versio takes issue with this, defects to the Rebellion, and that’s where the story continues.
The fact that Iden took this long to realize the Empire were the bad guys is genuinely surprising to me and helped to create an unintentional lack of empathy for the character. The Empire, by this point, had colonized and razed other planets, including blowing up an entire planet, Alderaan.
Genocide isn’t anything new to the Empire, but because it happens to be her planet, now she has a problem with it. Ten minutes ago in the story, she was talking about how the Rebels deserved to die.
Future missions rotate between on-foot and space battles where you pilot an X-Wing, shooting down a solid number of enemies before the sequence is over. The campaign boils down to an extended tutorial of how to play the game, from blasting foes on land and in space to occasionally getting to play as Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren later on.
There are moments in the story that attempt to be meaningful where one of Iden’s companions is either in danger or dies, but it’s hard to get attached to any of these characters when most were introduced between thirty minutes to an hour ago.
Star Wars Battlefront II’s campaign is six hours of running and gunning with some cutscenes thrown in between. There’s a reason only 29% of players who own the title have actually completed the campaign.
Gameplay became repetitive and I found myself thinking about how much more fun it would be playing the multiplayer mode with friends over having to listen to another speech about how the Empire is bad.
If you’re looking for an easy way to get some extra trophies, play the campaign, otherwise, you won’t miss out on anything important. While I love almost everything about Star Wars, I kinda wish I could take my six hours back.

Just in case you’re not familiar: Star Wars Battlefront II includes an original single player campaign set after Return of the Jedi.
You’ll take on the role of Iden Versio, (played by Janina Gavankar), Commander of Imperial special forces unit Inferno Squad. Alongside her squadmates Del Meeko (T.J. Ramini) and Gideon Hask (Paul Blackthorne), Iden struggles to maintain order in a galaxy that seems to be crumbling all around her.
The new single player campaign in Star Wars Battlefront II is an original story set after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi™. It’s no secret that Iden Versio and Inferno Squad will be crossing paths with some of the galaxy’s most renowned characters, but they’ll also be encountering elements that are originally from other Star Wars stories. There are multiple mediums, comics, novels, television, films, games, and more, that tell new or unique stories that take place within the Star Wars universe. Star Wars Battlefront II helps enrich the universe by telling a previously untold story that is able to build upon what has already been established.
Without giving too much away, here are some of the other Star Wars stories you might want to pick up before playing to give you some extra context.
Star Wars: Shattered Empire — Messengers
The Emperor planned for many eventualities… including his own demise. Thus was born the Contingency – a secret plan hatched by Palpatine that was meant to destroy the Empire AND its enemies in the days after his death. Among the tools the Emperor built to facilitate the Contingency were Messengers, a class of droid designed to enforce the Emperor’s will. Humanoid in shape and projecting a holographic visage of Sheev Palpatine, the Messengers issued commands to key Imperial leaders intended to bring the Emperor’s genocidal aims to fruition. A Messenger plays a key part in the story of Star Wars Battlefront II.
Star Wars Aftermath: Empire’s End — Imperial Observatory
The Emperor established multiple Observatories, each with a different purpose.
Some housed secrets and powerful artifacts, while others had more nefarious objectives. An Imperial Observatory on Jakku played a central role in the Contingency plan, and another appears as part of Star Wars Battlefront II’s single player campaign.
Star Wars™ Battlefront™: Inferno Squad — Iden’s Early Years
This one’s pretty obvious, but to dive deeper into the backstory of Iden, Del, Hask, Admiral Versio, and the beginning of Inferno Squad, check out the prequel novelization of Iden’s early career. You’ll learn where she came from, find out more about her experience at the first Death Star, and learn the secret origin of Inferno Squad.
Star Wars Shattered Empire — Operation: Cinder
Another element of the Contingency legacy is Operation: Cinder, an Imperial scheme to help ensure neither the Rebellion nor the Empire survive the Emperor’s death. This included Imperial attacks on a number of worlds following the Battle of Endor, including Palpatine’s home planet of Naboo.
Players who want to understand more about Iden’s journey may want to pick up Shattered Empire to learn about what happens in the interim between Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and The Battle of Jakku.

It begins with an impressive cinematic cutscene of the various battles that the galactic Empire wages in its eternal struggle against the Republic, the Jedi and the Rebels, and then continues with a series of interviews, interrupted from time to time by clips of gameplay, footage of the voice acting, animation and work on the game. Then one of the developers says that he has always liked the dark side. The idea of the new game is to allow players to understand the logic of the supporters of the Empire, to give an understanding of the principles of organization and life, to show the conflict on the part of the elite unit of Inferno stormtroopers, the existence of which most of the inhabitants of the galaxy do not even know about.
Lucasfilm creative director Steve Blank (Dteve Blank) notes that the story of Battlefront 2 is extremely important to the Star Wars universe. She talks about the events that took place after the VI episode «Return of the Jedi», about what happened to a distant galaxy, with the Empire, which lost the Emperor. Lucasfilm managing producer Orion Kellogg adds that players will be able to experience what it was like for the inhabitants of a collapsing galaxy. The video also talks about her character Janina Gavankar, who plays the main character of the game Iden Versio. All her life, starting from the children’s military camp, she was brought up in order to become a fighter. With the death of the second Death Star and the Emperor, she will have to face enormous challenges and difficult choices. The campaign also focuses on her relationship with her father, Admiral Garrick Versio, played by Anthony Skordi, as family relationships are an important part of Star Wars. nine0007 Another member of the elite unit, Gideon Haske, is also talked about by Paul Blackthorne, who plays him. Husk believes that the Empire brings peace, justice and order to the galaxy, which he fights for; even when everyone around him doubts, he continues to move forward on his path. In Skirmish, two teams each try to be the first to get 100 kills in one round of quick combat in a small area. That’s it, no more goals — just a battle with the enemy. This is a great way to get to know the different classes of fighters — officer, specialist, shooter and heavy fighter — without the participation of heroes and vehicles.
