Wie sinnvoll ist der Einbau einer SSD in die Playstation 4?

Die Playstation 4 verfügt standardmäßig über eine Festplatte mit 500 GB Speicherplatz und nur 5400 U/min. Dies ist heutzutage weder viel Speicherplatz noch besonders schnell. Moderne Spieletitel benötigen im zwei bis dreistelligen Gigabyte-Bereich an Speicherplatz auf einer Festplatte. Die 500 GB Speicherplatz sind daher schnell voll und die Festplatte noch langsamer als ohnehin schon. In den letzten Jahren wurden SSD-Festplatten immer beliebter unter PC-Gamern, daher war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis auch Konsolenspieler das mögliche Potenzial von SSD-Speichermedien in ihren Konsolen entdecken würden. Da Sony genauso wie Microsoft bei dieser Konsolengeneration auf herkömmliche Festplatten im SATA-2,5-Zoll-Laufwerk als Dauerspeicher für Betriebssystem, Updates und Spiele setzt, können diese einfach ausgetauscht werden. SSD-Festplatten basieren auf Flashspeicher-Technologie und sind daher im Vergleich zu HDD-Festplatten deutlich schneller und unempfindlicher gegenüber äußeren Störungen. Der Nachteil ist jedoch, dass SSD-Festplatten trotz sinkender Preise immer noch teurer sind als reguläre Festplatten und daher nicht für jeden erschwinglich sind.

Man muss sich nichts vor machen: SSD Speicher sind noch immer relativ teuer. Dieser Abschnitt dient daher nur als kurze Übersicht. Bereits eine mit 500 GB gleichgroße SSD Platte, wie die verbaute Speicherkapazität der Playstation kostet im Schnitt 150 €. Normale Festplatten, die zwar gleich schnell wie die Standardfestplatte der Playstation sind, aber wesentlich mehr Speicher bieten, kosten nur einen Bruchteil davon. Bereits für 50-60 € sind gute 1 TB HDD Festplatten zu haben. Wer also lieber doch nur mehr Speicher für möglichst viele Spiele haben will, sollte doch lieber zur klassischen Platte greifen. Der Erwerb einer guten SSD Flashfestplatte sollte außerdem nicht in einem Discounter erfolgen, auch wenn die Angebote gegenüber Fachpreisen verlockend erscheinen mögen, muss auf Qualität geachtet werden, sonst leidet die Spielleistung darunter.

Gibt der Geldbeutel jedoch mehr her oder muss es unbedingt eine größere SSD werden, wird sich eine Investition in eine Flashspeicherplatte deutlich aufs Konto niederschlagen. 1 TB SSD Festplatten sind kaum für unter 200 € zu haben, damit sind sie nahezu genauso teuer wie die Playstation selbst (je nach Händler 250 – 350 €). Achten Sie beim Kauf einer neuen Platte für Ihre Konsole also darauf, ob Sie lieber nur mehr Speicher wollen oder aber kompromisslos sowohl auf mehr Speicher als auch Leistung setzen wollen, was bei SSDs definitiv ins Geld gehen wird. Entscheidend für den späteren Einbau sind aber auch die Abmaße. Die Wunschfestplatte muss unbedingt im 2,5″ Format vorliegen und darf eine Maximalhöhe des Gehäuse nicht überschreiten, da Sie sonst wie weiter unten beschrieben nicht in die Festplattenhalterung passt.

Der Einbau einer SSD-Festplatte in die Playstation

Im Gegensatz zur PS3 befindet sich die Festplattenhalterung der neuen Playstation nicht hinter irgendwelchen Klappen und Verschlüssen. Sony kommt Moddinginteressierten mit der neuen Konsole sehr entgegen. Schließen Sie zuvor Ihre Konsole von allen Kabeln ab, das schließt sowohl Controller als auch Netzkabel ein. Die Festplattenhalterung befindet sich in der oberen linken Hälfte der Playstation. Sie wird durch Abnehmen der glänzenden Plastikoberfläche zugänglich. Nun kommt der zurechtgelegte Schraubendreher zum Einsatz. Der Speicher liegt nämlich unter einer Metalldecke. In der unteren linken Ecke der Halterung ist eine Kreuzschlitzschraube zu finden. Drehen Sie diese mit dem Schraubendreher heraus und legen die Metallabdeckung zur Seite. Die Speicherplatte gleitet dann nach außen hin in der Halterung aus der Playstation heraus. An der Seite der herausgleitenden Halterung befinden sich auf Gummi gelagerte Schrauben, die die Platte an Metallhalterung fixieren. Drehen Sie auch diese Schrauben heraus, um an die Speicherplatte zu gelangen, die Sie austauschen wollen. Es sollten vor Ihnen nun die alte Platte, die Halterung, die Plastikabdeckung und die Schrauben liegen. Achten Sie besonders auf die Schrauben, die beim Basteln gern mal herunterfallen und verloren gehen können. Diese sind übrigens speziell auf den Rahmen der Halterung angepasst und sind daher nicht leicht zu ersetzen. Sony gab in einem offiziellen Bericht an wie hoch maximal neu eingebaute Speicherplatten sein dürfen. Normal sind bis zu 9,5 mm Höhe vorgesehen, die Halterung fasst aber ohne Probleme Festplatten bis zu einer Höhe von 12,4 mm. Letztlich liegt die reale Maximalhöhe dazwischen, denn die Festplatten werden mittig schwebend von den Halterungsschrauben gelagert, wodurch also ungefähr 11 mm Maximalhöhe erreichbar sind. Achten Sie also bei der Festplattenwahl auf diese Einbauhöhe.

Das neue Speichermedium wird nun mit den Halterungsschrauben in die Halterungsschiene eingefasst und fixiert. Die Metallschiene wird zurück in das Festplattenfach geschoben, bis der Festplattenspeicher auch tatsächlich einrastet. Achten Sie auf den Entkopplungmechanismus und die Stelle an der das Befestigungsloch der Metallschiene über dem Schraubloch des Gehäuses beziehungsweise der Festplattenabdeckung liegt. Die letzte Schraube wird hier eingeführt und fest verdreht. Damit haben Sie die Festplatten auch schon ausgetauscht. Die glänzende Plastikabdeckung wird anschließend wieder auf das Gehäuse aufgebracht und von außen nach innen eingeschoben, bis das Gehäuse komplett verschlossen ist. Damit ist die erste große von zwei Hürden genommen.
