You parachute down to land with 99 other players and battle it out until only one of you is standing. PUBG is still one of the best battle royale games out there, and it’s a fantastic alternative to Warzone.

EA’s free-to-play shooter came from nowhere to challenge Fortnite and PUBG’s dominance of the free-to-play battle royale genre in early February 2019, reaching over 50 million players by the end of its first month. It’s got a sharp skill-ceiling, so you may want to drop with two friends by your side, as Apex rewards smart plays and class-based synergies. Overwatch 2

Blizzard replaced the original Overwatch entirely, with this refined competitive shooter taking its place. OW2 has a tighter team composition than its predecessor, has a free-to-play structure, and is arguably more aggressively-inclined – there’s less of a focus on support roles, and a greater push to have you pushing objectives.
Titanfall 2

The first Titanfall did well, but it was Respawn Entertainments outstanding sequel that truly made it a COD contender. The series meshes traditional firefights with giant mechs that players control to dominate the field. This creates truly unique strategies where you must balance the raw power of mech fighting with the fluid freedom of running around outside your unit.
Titanfall 2 is arguably one of (if not the) best FPS games of the last generation.
Spec Ops: The Line

If you play Call of Duty for its multiplayer Spec Ops won’t be a strong swap, but The Line has one of the best game stories ever.

But while Call of Duty players eventually moved on to the next COD instalment, Rainbow Six Siege’s player base has expanded to over 25 million. It constantly updates with new free maps, building off a solid base game that tasks players with fighting as either terrorists or counter-terrorists.
Terrorists play defence, counter-terrorists must infiltrate their territory and take all enemies out. Rainbow Six enjoys a regular flow of new DLC that shake things up just as they’re becoming slightly stale, ensuring this is a game you can master and still find enjoyment from years later.
Metro Exodus

Some of the best games take their inspiration from outside of the industry, and the Metro series is a great example. Based on novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the series takes place among the devastation of a global nuclear war. The survivors fled underground to form new civilisations in the worlds metro tunnels, but the latest instalment Metro Exodus allows players to venture back up to the surface. There’s no multiplayer campaign, but you can test your shooter skills honed in Call of Duty throughout Metro Exodus’s excellent single player story.
The focus here is exploration and stealth, so if you’re looking for a change of pace, this is it.
Splatoon 3

If you’ve got kids – or have found yourself tasked with entertaining kids for longer than ten minutes – Splatoon 3 is a vital parenting instrument. The Nintendo-exclusive third-person shooter is a family-friendly take on the multiplayer genre, swapping out bullet loaded guns with ink spraying pistols. The actual gameplay modes are fairly similar: take out enemies, claim territory, and steal resources, but the paint mechanic completely shakes things up. Spraying the environment is as important as splatting enemies, creating interesting new ways to play even for adults that just want something different from Call of Duty’s monotone maps.

The shooter series Call of Duty continues to have a busy life as one of the flagship franchises for Activision Blizzard .
However, even such a well-oiled game production pipeline can fail. And the story of Sledgehammer Games is proof of that.
Founded in 2009 by Visceral Games alumni, originally planned to release a third-person adventure shooter set in Vietnam. But in 2010, the scandal broke out with the dismissal of the fathers of Call of Duty by Vince Zamplella and by Jason West which left Infinity Ward in ruins. Under such conditions, the Activision management decided to close the Sledgehammer Games project, transferring the team to the completion of Modern Warfare 3 .
Eight years later, the crisis struck Sledgehammer Games, which again tried to release Call of Duty about Vietnam. In 2018, the founders of Glen Scofield and Michael Condrey leave the studio , taking some of the staff with him. And due to a conflict with colleagues from Raven Software , the shooter production pipeline almost stalled again, which jeopardized plans to release a new part in 2020.
As a result, the problematic project was hastily given to Treyarch , which in an emergency mode remade it into Black Ops — Cold War .
Now we have 2021 in the yard. Sledgehammer Games Studio has been rebuilt, and its employees are determined to rehabilitate themselves through the announcement of Call of Duty: Vanguard . And the editors of GameMAG.ru visited the presentation of the game.
Most of the leaks have been confirmed — Vanguard will once again return players to the battlefields World War II . At the same time, Sledgehammer Games clearly tried to work on the bugs after the extremely controversial Call of Duty: WWII . However, the source of inspiration was chosen extremely non-standard.
Based on what we saw, we had a clear feeling that Activision Blizzard was clearly watching Ubisoft and its Rainbow Six shooter series.
The latter was based on the book of the same name by the American writer Tom Clancy , dedicated to the elite counter-terrorist squad « Rainbow Six «, consisting of the best operatives from around the world.
According to Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty: Vanguard’s story campaign will focus on «the birth of the Special Forces» and «turning ordinary people into extraordinary on the battlefield.» In the center of the story there will be a group of four soldiers who managed to end up in the dungeons at the end of the war Gestapo .
The so-called Task Force One consists of a black British paratrooper Arthur Kingsley , a Soviet female sniper Polina Petrova , an American pilot Wade Wilson and an Australian saboteur Lucas Riggs . As you progress through the single player campaign, the player will be able to get to know each of the characters better.
This decision also made it possible to significantly enrich the shooter, making it more variable, immersive and «diverse».
9th Parachute Battalion Sergeant Kingsley will take part in Operation Tonga to parachute in France and ensure the success of the Allied landings in Normandy ( Operation Overlord ).
Lieutenant Petrova will witness the German attack on Stalingrad. Captain Wilson will take part in the battles with the Japanese for the Solomon Islands. Well, « Tobruk Rat » Riggs must foil the plans of Erwin Rommel’s «Desert Fox» in Africa. Thus, players will be able to take part in battles in four theaters of war.
The main opponent for Task Force One will be the fictional head of the Gestapo Heinrich Freisinger, who, along with other Nazi leaders, with the help of the Phoenix project, seeks to prevent the collapse of Germany. Trying to complete the task of eliminating the enemy, the detachment is captured in Berlin, which is already preparing to take control of the Soviet troops.
Sledgehammer Games was inspired by real events, so the characters have historical personalities. So, the prototype of Polina Petrova was Hero of the USSR Lyudmila Pavlichenko who is considered the deadliest female sniper in history (309 confirmed kills, including 36 enemy snipers). She was nicknamed « Lady Death » in the West. As for Freisinger, his prototype is Heinrich Müller .
As part of the presentation, the developers demonstrated a piece of the mission for a British paratrooper. The landing in Normandy on the night before D-Day does not go according to plan, so Arthur has to move carefully in search of surviving colleagues through the countryside, which is patrolled by Germans with dogs. The developers turn the operation into a kind of horror, which is greatly facilitated by the musical accompaniment from Beara McCreary ( God of War ), actively leaning on cellos, double basses and violins.
Judging by what they saw, the developers nevertheless decided to return to the system of health regeneration familiar to Call of Duty (in WWII, they had to be treated with first-aid kits, which contradicted the dynamics of local battles). However, no one has forgotten about QTE, so it’s worth mentally preparing for them.
Visually Vanguard looks good. The project is based on the graphics engine from Modern Warfare 2019 , which was clearly developed with the transition to the next generation of consoles in mind. Activision Blizzard assures that the optimization of the new part of Call of Duty will remain at a high level. This also applies to previous generation consoles, on which the game will produce 60 frames per second.
The developers tried to recreate the photorealistic environment in detail using archival images. And here the main feature of Vanguard comes to the fore — physically correct destructibility, implemented according to principle Rainbow Six: Siege (another hello to Ubisoft).
What does this mean? There will be many objects on the levels that can be destroyed. We are talking about furniture, doors, fragile walls, cabinets and so on. For example, you can make a hole in the shelter to observe the actions of the enemy.
It is obvious that the mechanics were created with multiplayer in mind. Theoretically, the use of a reactive environment should force players to act more tactfully. But given the dynamics of Call of Duty, we can assume that the fights will descend into insane mayhem in the spirit of Battlefield 3: Close Quarters .
If the story campaign was dedicated to the formation of special forces, then in the competitive mode, the fighters will already hone their skills. In total, players will have access to 20 cards at the release, of which 16 are designed for the classic mode 6v6 . Sledgehammer Games also has high hopes for new modes, among which Champion Hill stands out.
However, journalists have so far been asked not to disclose details in order to keep the intrigue.
We can definitely say that the Gunsmith system will return to the game, which will allow you to fine-tune firearms. In addition, the developers have redesigned ballistics and 3D sound.
The story of the new part of Call of Duty would be incomplete without mentioning two more pillars of the franchise — Warzone and Zombies . And Activision Blizzard has prepared a couple of surprises.
So, Warzone will be fully integrated into Vanguard. This applies to upgrading accounts, items for customization and weapons. In addition, Raven Software is working on a new map for Warzone, which will be released in 2021. The icing on the cake should be a new anti-cheat system, which players have been asking developers for a long time.
However, major changes await Zombies. The fact is that now its creators from the Treyarch studio are responsible for the development of the mode.
This means that the shooting of carrion in Vanguard will be directly related to the events from Cold War: Zombies .
What are our impressions after the presentation of the new creation of Sledgehammer Games? Slight confusion. The fact is that the developers are positioning their game in a very strange way.
On the one hand, the representatives of the studio declare great attention to detail and historicity. On the other hand, we have here a rather delusional story about a multicultural special forces detachment led by a British paratrooper with the rank of sergeant (in the presence of two lieutenants and a captain), who is trying to stop another sinister plan of the Nazis.
The absurdity lies in the fact that already in 1946 the Iron Curtain fell , so this experience of international cooperation raises many questions. No matter how the story with the promotion of Battlefield V repeats itself in the end, which also emphasized authenticity, but in the debut trailer the Nazis were severely beaten with a cricket bat by a cyborg girl.
But the main intrigue remains how much the «reactive environment» will affect the multiplayer. Will the developers achieve tactical gameplay? There is not long to wait.
Call of Duty: Vanguard will release on November 5, 2021 on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 .
