I have awoken from my sliced ham and prosecco-induced holiday slumber and am ready to acknowledge (with only a little bit of a tremor) that we are in a new year. New year, new me? No. Spiral ham and prosecco remind me that it’s okay for some things to always remain the same. New year, new set of video game release dates? You bet.
Last year’s game announcements helped me collect an ocean’s worth of dates and titles to share in a comprehensive list, but since we are so early into 2023—and more eternally, because even careful plans get delayed—you’ll notice that some exact dates or titles are missing, or even might end up changing.
This list will get refreshed as we get deeper into the year and learn more exact dates and I learn more about iPads, as a separate side project. Studios can email me with announcements at [email protected] for potential inclusion in this list, too. In the meantime, here’s every game you have to look forward to in 2023.
What games are coming out in 2023?
A lot.

Indies’ Lies — DTF Games
A powerful turn-based card game that reminded me of Slay the Spire. Lots of characters, maps, enemies. There is a global progression of heroes and difficulty. No spoiler review.

The game is announced for platforms: Android, Windows.
LYRICAL INTRODUCTION
The game was very delivered in early access, but I decided to wait with the review. The project caused enthusiasm, but I didn’t want to jinx it or something and pour out premature doxology. They promised Russian localization of the story mode, and in general — to finish it. Unusually for himself, he became a kind of waiter and vigilantly monitored the state of affairs. Yesterday there was a release, which means it’s time to talk about the game that impressed me so much at the start and analyze the state of affairs, what we managed to implement, what not, as a whole, the feeling. nine0003
Plot
Available, but not standard. Each hero has his own story of adventures (10,000 words per brother), which open as you progress. De facto, this is one of the game modes.
I got to the plots as a release hero.
GAMEPLAY
Gameplay is a turn-based card game.
At the start (in fact — a big race) choose the difficulty. It’s not so easy with her. There are twenty gradations of difficulty, they are sequentially opened after winning the previous one. Descriptions — what exactly will change, unfortunately, no. They just write that there will be more difficult battles. nine0003
There are three (four with the Alrayan Undertow expansion) starting campaigns common to all heroes. Each of them is a sequence of three locations that must be overcome in roguelike mode. This means that when you lose, nothing (except for the unfortunate hero) is lost, but nothing (global leveling) is gained either.
Description of one of the campaigns.
We choose the main character, to whom this passage will be credited in case of success. There are nine characters to choose from, divided into three conditional classes — magicians, shooters, assassins. The Alrayan Undertow expansion will add another class — barbarians and three new heroes. nine0003
Heroes differ greatly in properties and fighting style. There are detailed descriptions of each character — starting cards and talents.
One of the heroes.
At the start, there is also a rather key choice of the camp (one of the three proposed). The action will entail situational consequences in the form of some bonuses and cards, but this is not the main thing. Upon successful completion, the camp will affect achievements, which, in turn, make up a global progression. nine0003
An important choice, although I didn’t understand it at first.
Level maps in roguelike mode are randomly generated and represent paths from hexes filled with activities.
At the end, the boss is waiting, and each new run, the boss will be randomly selected from the general list of bosses.
Typical roguelike location.
When the starting campaign is completed, the story mode will open for the hero. Everything is designed a little differently here, but it happens the same way as in the roguelike mode, with one significant difference — here we are told plots (approximately 10,000 words per hero), and in case of victory we get, albeit not entirely clear, a global progression. nine0003
Location in story mode.
Consider what activities we expect during the passage.
The basis of the game, of course, is battles . The fights are ingenious, you need to be very good at navigating your deck, describing the properties of the cards, at least roughly simulating the combos that we will try to make.
Fight-fight-fight.
Turn-based card battles and, in general, quite standard for the genre. There is energy per turn, for which we play cards from the hand, the cards themselves, consumable and wearable items. nine0003
There are simple rules that you need to understand in order to achieve victory. For example, in the normal case, the shield created on this turn will end at the beginning of the next. From time to time (sometimes inappropriately) training pictures will be shown, so it’s very easy to figure it out.
Thank you, of course, for the detailed description, but this is the second boss, I already figured out how the cards move.
In my opinion, the peculiarity of this particular game is its great richness in terms of the nuances of using cards, as well as the variety of effects that can affect the combatants in the most unexpected way. Something like this: in the first turn, any damage dealt is doubled (that is, you must not carry out some kind of noob attack, which will be tantamount to losing a turn), if a certain character hits from the back row, then he does it twice, and a combo of three played cards at the end of which will be needed — will additionally cause a burn. And this is a fairly standard mini-combo, of which there can be a couple per turn. nine0003
It is very good that descriptions of cards and any effects are available in the form of convenient context menus, without them it would be impossible to remember this variety.
Eyes run wide sometimes from abundance. And that’s just passives on one unit.
Opponents are divided into three groups — simple, elite and bosses. I can not say that they are very different functionally at a low level of complexity. Bosses are fatter and can throw some kind of unpleasant debuff or self-buff, but nothing more. nine0003
The saddest thing that can happen in a battle or an event is getting cursed. These are harmful (negatively affect the hero when playing + you have to do it) or garbage (do not cause direct harm, but spoil the deck) cards that clog the deck and prevent you from fighting at full strength.
During the battle, their approximate further actions are shown above the heads of the enemies, whether they will attack (moreover, it is indicated who will be beaten or all together with an AOE-shkoy), or defend themselves or conjure something. nine0003
The final boss of the mage’s story mode.
At first, only our hero participates in fights, and then helpers are randomly added to the team (heroes from the main list, only weakened). They can significantly influence the course of battles with their skills.
In the story mode, assistants are added one at a time (you can take or not take to the squad), and when passing through the roguelike part, there is a choice of three options (you can read in detail who is capable of what). Auxiliary units and the hero are placed in the formation (far row, front and middle) depending on the intended style of combat. nine0003
Options.
As a reward for battles, we get gold, new cards and runes, sometimes talent points, consumables or quest items (in story mode).
Loot Fullhouse.
Text events happen quite often . Here you have to read descriptions of events and options for actions that will lead to certain results. They can have a very significant impact on the passage, by clicking a little there is a chance to get, for example, one or even two talent points. But you should not rejoice too much, as a rule, something very good contains some kind of bug in the kit. Something like the fact that the hero climbed over the rocks (-10hp), the stones were sharp (-10hp more) and found a bag of coins (+50gold). nine0003
Text event. Here, by the way, all options are good. But that doesn’t happen often.
Trader plays an important role. The most important thing to strive for is the purchase of talent points. The price for them will increase every time inside the race, then they are worth it. The rest — insofar as you can buy, but you can not bathe.
Shop.
Blacksmith allows you to create «runes» and embed them in cards with cells. In this game, the same cards are called runes, but which can be inserted into other cards, but until they are inserted, they hang (sometimes useful, sometimes clog it) in the deck. nine0003
Some runes are obviously useful, like keeping a card in hand between turns to save some top hit. Some are neither fish nor meat (the addition of a unit of energy, but the card leaves the deck until the end of the battle), and some do not understand at all what they are made for (the card goes to the end of the battle after winning back and also, besides, until the end of the battle).
Forging.
Normally, there are healing altars before boss fights. Here you can:
— Completely heal one companion. nine0003
— All our fighters for 35% of their lives.
— Remove one curse.
The functionality of the altars can be enhanced by leveling the hero.
Altar.
There are two types of bleeding . One takes place inside the races and is reset after completing any mode (roguelike and story). The second is a tricky and not very powerful, at first glance, global progression.
When completing campaigns, the hero gains talent points that can be spent in a large development tree. Interestingly, the same type of hero (for example, the magician Albert) does not have the same talents on the tree, and, moreover, they can be different in general. That is, there is a decent replenishable (from this below) pool of talents for each hero that can be obtained randomly. The only exception is the starting, innate talents, they are always the same. nine0003
End of the skating rink, almost everything is open. And this is generally a different tree, relative to the last race.
Strengthening inside the races also occurs along the line of a set of new cards and the installation of runes in them. Sometimes you can copy or transmute (replace a card with any random one) cards.
What to choose…
The global progression is powerful and at the same time — not obvious. It consists in the fact that, having passed the story mode, the hero can gain achievements in one or another camp (there are many of them). Achievements here are a wagon and three small carts. For their discovery, they are rewarded with new cards and talents, which will now be able to meet the heroes in the game. nine0003
It doesn’t seem like much of a buff, but experience has shown that certain cards or talents can dramatically change the course of battles.
One card received, talent and another card to be earned.
GALLOPING IN EUROPE
Alrayan Undertow add-on brings some serious content. That’s plus a campaign, one class (barbarians) and three new heroes with their own stories, another 10,000 words each.
By the way, they promise to give it away for free if you buy the game before January 23rd. nine0003
Powerful additive.
Once they were given to play a mini-game «find two identical cards». Whatever you find will be given.
Not enough moves — you have to guess right away.
A LITTLE ABOUT SAD
I was waiting for the game to be translated into Russian at least before the release, but, alas, it has not been completely done yet. So there are no problems in terms of playing, but in the history mode there is a lot of text and not all of it is immediately clear. nine0003
Translation available:
— Maps and their properties.
— Text events inside the roguelike mode.
— Descriptions of heroes and their properties.
— Descriptions of monsters and their properties.
No translation:
— Dialogs in story mode.
— Text events and parts of descriptions in story mode.
Loose.
Consider the pros and cons of the game, sum up.
POS:
+ Nice graphics.
+ Good music and sound accompaniment.
+ Successfully combined roguelike mode and plot.
+ Many kinds of heroes.
+ Many types of enemies and bosses.
+ A huge number of cards and their combinations when making combos.
+ Many types of consumables.
+ Interesting battles.
+ Difficulty increases smoothly.
+ There are autosaves. If you urgently need to interrupt, then the race will not start from scratch, but comfortably. nine0003
+ Russian localization of part of the text.
WHAT CAN BE BOTH A PLUS AND A MINUS:
± Only the stubborn will reach the plot. Personally, it took me 3 hours for one hero. Heroes 9. That is, about 27-30 hours, so that everyone can open the story mode only. Despite the fact that he didn’t lose at all, except for the case when he did it on purpose, in order to understand the consequences.
± Personally, I don’t like almost the whole blacksmith and his runes. They are made somehow stupidly and of little use, except for a couple of runes. But there is a possibility that I am stupid and have not figured it out yet. nine0003
MINUSES:
— The Russian localization of the text is not fully carried out. Without translation, the plots and story modes remained. The required level of knowledge of English is intermediate or slightly lower. Personally, I just barely drove into what was happening, although this does not interfere with playing at all — we go from activity to activity.
— Numerous irregularities in the text, which is translated into Russian. There are no special problems with understanding, but I regularly saw mistakes.
— You cannot take screenshots in Steam by pressing F12. nine0003
OBJECTIVE CONCLUSIONS
Game with turn-based card battles. A large amount of content: heroes, enemies/bosses, plots, good pumping inside the race and promising global progression. Very nice design, good soundtrack.
SUBJECTIVE CONCLUSIONS
The game is purely stylistically reminiscent of Slay the Spire, but, in fact, they are completely different games.
The spire suffocated me in about an hour. Five runs with plus or minus the same results. Well, what’s the point in continuing if the limit of my intellectual capabilities is already clear? scored. nine0003
But here is another matter. Victories follow victories, they let you play. I would say that Indies’ Lies is Slay the Spire, but for those who don’t want to beat their heads against the wall of difficulty, but want to play for fun. At the same time, there is an excellent variability of races even with the same heroes (temporary pumping will be different, as well as enemies / bosses). We are slowly opening up new cards and talents, making story modes available / running storylines, and if you get involved and your soul requires difficulties, then you can arrange a challenge for yourself with 20 gradations of difficulty. nine0003
In general, I highly recommend it for review. And if the Russian localization is also completed, then it will be super in general.
Something like that.
PS: Probably didn’t cover all the aspects, might have missed something. I will be glad to supplement / correct the review or answer questions in the course of communication in the comments.
PPS: The review was written based on the results of 20 hours of overcoming. This included a full playthrough with one hero on release (10 hours) and one time roguelike mode in early access (10 hours, it wasn’t harder, I just got dumb and slow). nine0003
