Sony 2022 TVs — QD-OLED, Mini LED, Master Series and more

The Sony 2022 TV lineup features an updated XR processor, promising Sony’s Bravia XR TVs to ramp up image processing power across 4K OLED TVs, a QD-OLED TV and the brand’s first Mini LED TV.
Will any of these TVs be the best TV of the year? Most of the spotlight is on the Sony A95K QD-OLED, which is set to rival the Samsung S95B OLED TV with the next-gen technology. But that’s not all — the X95K 4K Mini LED promises sophisticated backlight control while the 42-inch A90K Master Series makes for a compelling alternative to a gaming monitor.
Speaking of gaming, with the new Sony 2022 TVs, the PS5 will be able to detect each individual Sony TV model and adjust HDR settings accordingly. The Bravia XR processor will also be able to switch between game mode and standard mode automatically, depending on what type of content is being played on the PS5. Playing Gran Turismo 7? Game Mode. Watching a 4K Blu Ray? Game Mode off. There’s no need to go in and fiddle around with the settings.

Sony Bravia XR A95K QD-OLED TV

Sony’s A95K QD-OLED packs XR Triluminos Max color processing, promising to display the full spectrum of colors even in the brightest scenes when compared to conventional OLED.
Sony eliminated white phosphor from its sets, meaning there’s no dilution of color in even the brightest of images.
As a result, Sony aims to achieve deeper greens and reds with its own elementary color shift method. And like Samsung’s QD-OLED, the A95K adds a quantum dot layer above the OLED array. This should mean a better light and color spread across the panel from each individual pixel, creating a brighter picture without compromising black levels.
Again, with Sony it’s all about image processing. Its OLEDs will have CPXR, a technology for better depth control so that objects appear better in a 3D space. It should preserve positioning while not over-sharpening objects in the background.

Sony Bravia XR X95K Mini LED TV
Mini LED is new for Sony this year.
Sony’s XR Blacklight Master Drive system aims to reduce zone visibility, promising refined controls across the entire picture. Because Mini LEDs are so bright, the small individual zones that are laid out on a grid can become visible, making the edges of an image look blocky or even blowing out details.
Traditional algorithms may simple lower brightness across the board to prevent these grids from shining through, but Sony claims its XR Backlight Master Drive can intelligently control Mini LED power to reduce visibility of individual zones.

Sony Master Series Z9K 8K Mini LED TV
Sony’s second Mini LED TV this year is an 8K model.
We’re still not encouraging 8K TV purchases due to the limited content available in 8K, but when it comes to big-screen sizes and promised upscaling the Z9K has a lot to offer.

Sony 2022 4K OLED TVs
Sony’s 2022 4K OLED TVs are split into two models, with the Master Series A90K coming in smaller sizes and the Bravia XR A80K coming in larger sizes. The Master Series model has a few enhancements compared to the Bravia model, such as contrast enhancement.

Smart TV updates

Sony touts Netflix Adaptive Calibrated Mode as part of its new line of TVs.
This mode is designed for the creative intent of Netflix content. Based on the ambient environment, it will calibrate the image automatically for better tone.
TVs by Sony will ship with Google TV and work with Apple AirPlay. There will also be hands-free voice search functionality.
Bravia Cam

The Sony Bravia Cam is a camera and ambient sensor that can sit atop all 2022 Sony televisions. It will come bundled with the Z9K Mini LED and A95K QD-OLED televisions and will also be sold separately for anyone who wants to add additional functionality to their TV.
The Bravia Cam is a webcam that can detect a person’s positioning and adjust the picture and audio accordingly. Sony calls this Ambient Optimization Pro — it means that if someone is not sitting right at the center viewing angle, the TV will make adjustments to the image and stereomix to account for that. And for those that are concerned about privacy, there’s a slider at the top to cover the camera lens.
This accessory, which connects via USB and mounts to the back magnetically, has gesture controls for basic functions, like powering on and off, adjusting the volume, or pausing playback, and has a proximity alert. This last feature is handy for anyone with kids, as the TV will put up a full screen notice telling users to step back keep a greater distance. The TV also dims when it notices someone has walked away for increased power savings.
Premium remote

A new premium remote will come bundled with the Z9K Mini LED and A95K QD-OLED and A90K OLED televisions. The remote is 36% smaller than last year’s unit and will be backlit. Also included is OK Google functionality to quickly find your remote.
Sony has reduced the number of keys from 49 to 25, removing the number keys altogether. Keys are integrated into a new keypad UI. The remote also has a flush design for easy cleaning.

Sony 2022 TVs
Sony has unveiled its 2022 OLED TV line-up, with the A95K as the new flagship model with a QD-OLED panel. The company is also launching its first 42-inch OLED TV, which will be part of the A90K series. X95K series and Sony Z9K series with 8K display received mini LED backlight (Mini LED).
And these are not all the differences that were revealed when comparing Sony 2022 TVs with 2021 TVs.

2022 Sony TVs
Sony OLED 2022
Sony announced its first QD-OLED TV (A95K), which uses blue OLEDs in combination with quantum dots to create richer reds and greens. “With millions of individual self-illuminating pixels, the A95K delivers more colors than ever before. As a result, the viewer gets a completely new viewing experience. This innovation helps convey the true intent of the creator.” Such a statement was made by Sony. nine0079
Sony’s 2022 flagship OLED TV series, the A95K with Samsung Display panel, will be available in 55-inch and 65-inch sizes. This series will have 4K resolution and «Sony XR Cognitive Processor». Owners of these TVs can place the tabletop stand either at the back (to hide the stand behind the TV) or at the front.
With the introduction of the A95K, Sony is expanding its OLED panel line-up and no longer relies solely on LG Display, the main supplier of OLED panels.
Series A90K will use LG Display’s WOLED panel, which will be available in 42-inch and 48-inch sizes.
This series will be a step down from last year’s A90J, which will continue into 2022. The Sony A80K will replace the A80J as Sony’s more affordable OLED model. The A80K will be available in 55, 65 and 77-inch screen sizes. All three models will inherit 2021 features such as dual HDMI 2.1 ports with 4K @ 120, VRR and new PlayStation 5 features.
Sony Mini LED 2022
Unlike TCL, which was the first to introduce miniLED TVs in 2020, Sony made the move in 2022. The mini-LED backlight is controlled by the «XR Backlight Master Drive» system. Sony has stated that it has optimized this technology to reduce blooming while maintaining contrast and high peak brightness.
It’s worth noting that some mini-LED LCD TVs still suffer from high glare. This artifact is even more pronounced than in more traditional zone dimming LCD TVs. Therefore, rigorous testing is necessary to determine exact performance.
Sony Z9 series TVsK with 8K resolution will also be equipped with Mini LED backlight.
Sony X90K
The popular Sony X90K series does not have a mini-LED backlight. It will still ship with local dimming. The X90K will also feature Sony’s «XR Cognitive Processor», which was first introduced in 2021. The X90K series will be available in 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches.
Peak brightness
In terms of peak brightness, the Z9K, X95K and X90K series have XR Contrast Booster 20, 15 and 10 respectively. Sony does not provide actual numbers, but the number indicates that it is a multiple of conventional LCD TVs. Therefore, it should be expected that Z9K will reach from 2000 to 4000 nits. According to Sony, the X90K will have higher peak brightness than last year’s X90J series.
HDMI 2.1 features
Nearly all 2022 Sony TVs (X85K and up) will get HDMI 2.1 features. These are 4K at 120Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), ALLM (Auto Switch to Game Mode), and eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel).
These models will also come with support for the new PS 5 features.
Google TV
Just like in 2021, all Sony 2022 models are equipped with the Google TV operating system. Services such as Netflix, Disney plus, HBO Max, Google Stadia will be installed right from the factory. Sony functions will be highlighted in the main menu. nine0079
All TVs from X80K and above are equipped with an advanced adaptive calibration mode for Netflix. This mode can automatically adjust the brightness level according to the ambient light. TV series such as Z9K, X95K and X90K are equipped with a new remote control. It does not have 49 buttons, as in the 2021 remote, but 25. Accordingly, this remote is smaller in size.
Bravia Core
Bravia Core is a pre-loaded movie service that includes redeemable movies. When purchasing a Bravia XR TV, the user is entitled to use this service with unlimited streaming free of charge for 24 months. nine0079
Featuring Pure Stream and IMAX Enhanced, content on Bravia Core delivers expressive sound quality and stunning visuals.
During 2022, Bravia Core will be available in more than 75 countries. At least that’s what Sony said.
Acoustic Multi-Audio
Three of Sony’s best LCD TVs feature «Acoustic Multi-Audio». Sony placed four (Z9K) tweeters in the TV’s cabinet so that dialogue would come straight from the screen. In the X95K, X90K series, there are not four, but two such tweeters. Midrange and woofers are placed along the bottom of the case. This is not the same as Acoustic Surface Audio in Sony OLED models.
