Sniper Elite III is a celebration of extravagant carnage — and, less significantly, a big improvement over 2012’s Sniper Elite V2. Its predecessor’s stiff, linear gameplay has been swapped out for a more open-ended, creativity-enabling approach to stealth-shooting. But the big draw – the real draw – is the same pornographically violent X-ray-vision carnage that erupts whenever your bullets meet their targets.

LoadingThese slow-motion, long-range kills are what keep Sniper Elite III from being just another generic-looking World War II shooter. Every effort was made to milk them for dramatic tension. When aiming, you can hold your breath, slowing time so you can watch that red dot shrink in on your target. Tight close-ups of the bullet in flight are accompanied by a steadily swelling roar, giving your shot a sense of impending destiny. Provided your reaction to the resulting gore is a sick thrill and not actual sickness, this is so immensely satisfying that it renders every other weapon at your disposal anticlimactic by comparison.

The kill-cam moments never got old enough for me to opt to skip them, but they might have if the rest of Sniper Elite III weren’t so competently designed. Centering on Karl, a gravel-voiced American sniper, who seems to almost singlehandedly dismantle the German Afrika Korps, you are taken to a lot of interesting settings in a theater of the war that’s rarely explored in games, and given semi-free rein to explore and murder Nazi occupiers in whatever way you deem fit. That’s what gives Sniper Elite III its edge — and not its story, which is awash in clichés and occasionally laughable dialogue.The campaign consists of just eight stages, but they’re a blast to creep through. Each one is enormous and has multiple objectives meant to give you a clear progression through the map, but how you reach and tackle those objectives is up to you. And when you factor in handfuls of enjoyable optional tasks, like blowing up a German motor pool or stealing top-secret plans, and the many deaths you’re likely to die, finishing a single level can take as long as a couple of hours.LoadingWith a guard AI that’ll usually spot you if you run or even poke your head up above cover, Sniper Elite III encourages you to take it slow and stealthy, spotting and tagging guards with your binoculars. And should you decide to take a shot with anything but your silenced pistol – like, say, your sniper rifle – it’s a good idea to either be near some noisy machinery that’ll cover up the sound, or immediately move somewhere else after you take your shot.

This push to relocate gives Sniper Elite III a fun, furtive cat-and-mouse feel, although like most stealth games, it doesn’t always make sense; all you need to do is sneak or run a prescribed distance away from the guards until they forget you ever existed.

But remember, there’s no penalty for breaking stealth – and because you mainly earn experience through kills, there’s no real reason not to clutter the horizon with bodies if you can get away with it. Dropping guards in quick succession always left me feeling like an efficient badass, even when it was due more to their uneven combat AI than my own skill.Sniper Elite III’s multiplayer maps are huge and filled with hiding places, and they’re built to emphasize distance and sneakiness. In fact, two of the standout modes are Distance King and No Cross, which respectively reward teams based on the range of their kills, and separate them with impassable barriers meant to force them to snipe. These modes are enjoyable, but they’re not fundamentally different from what you’d find in any other online shooter. Co-op, on the other hand, is much more rewarding. Not only can you tackle the entire campaign with a buddy, but you can also pair up in the waves-of-Nazis Survival mode and the engrossing Overwatch, which hands binoculars to one player and a rifle to the other, forcing you to work together as a sniper-spotter team.

Sniper Elite III’s open level designs and objectives pack in more than enough variety and stealthy tension to counterbalance its thin story and shaky enemy intelligence, and experimenting with its explosive traps is almost as fun as popping skulls with a sniper rifle. The skeleton-shattering, long-distance kills are still its riveting centerpiece, of course, but even without the element of dumb fun they offer, Sniper Elite III would still be a smart, unexpectedly memorable experience.

Sniper Elite V2, was a dark horse. It seemed like a Call Of Duty ripoff but was actually a pretty fun and challenging sniper game with decentSniper Elite V2, was a dark horse. Sniper Elite 3 is definitely a «more of the same» game. It’s actually a prequel rather than sequel, but the story is weaker than SEV2 and this time around the levels are fairly void of anything memorable unlike some very standout levels in SEV2.
That being said, the Sniper Elite series is very fun if you like stealth sniper style games. The games bring me back to days of Spec Ops on the original playstation, running around alone with limited ammo and mostly relying on a sniper rifle, being stealthy and knowing when go on the offensive. I sorely missed these types of games, so this fills a void.

The game format is essentially, 3rd person to move around levels and position yourself for shots, then a first person scope view for gunfights. There’s the ability too play somewhat stealthily in these games, but there’s also gunfights and assassination missions.
The main differences between Sniper Elite v2 and 3 is that th levels are now more open and less linear. This dramatically improves the stealth element of the gme as you are no lngr forced into situations where you can’t sneak around or flank enemies, plus it means you can psition yourself nearer atmospheric noises to mask your sots. However I feel the sound masking was developed more with SE2 as it had levels with events such as fireworks or the bell of the church which really continued through and was a key feature of those levels. There’s not really anything like that in SE3 it’s just a mechanic in the levels you can choose to find and use for some kills but not all.

SE3 also fixes the issue I had with SEV2 with manual saves, allow you to no longer suffer trying to redo a 3 wave gunfight where you’d get to the very last sniper and die because you couldn’t flank tham or position yourself properly, and then needing to restart the entire gunfight. Checkpoints were few and far between. SE3 allows you t save whenever you want, in addition to the checkpoints, which seem more frequent anyway. Although this also makes the game far easier as you can essentially save after every kill meaning there’s no risk for any action you take.

SE3 also adds takedowns, so you can takedown an enemy by sneaking up behind them, which is a very welcome addition. The silence handgun is still there from SEV2, but I prefer the takedowns for when yoou manage to get right up to an enemy without them seeing.

Another thing to mention is the control scheme is better in SE3. The default scheme in SE2 was unpleasant and there was only one other control layout choice available, which allowd you to aim the scope with L2, but meant you lost sprint on L3. In SE3 yu can sprint with L3 and aim the cope with L2.
SE3 is designed to be a superior game with non-linear levels, improved controls, and more focus on the Xray bullet cam (which can start to get annoying after every kill, but you can press a button to skip them which wasn’t possible on SEv2). However it also lost some of its charm with level design, the levels are less memorable and aren’t as creative in terms of design.

One last thing to mention is I hate that you can’t turn down the volume of the controller speaker in game. It’s crazy loud and makes noises constantly. Your only option is to turn off the speakers from the PS4 for all games and not just for this game.… Expand

Of course, it’s a sin to use such a “hard nut” as an ordinary infantry sniper on the front line, so the command over and over again sends a brave commando behind the front line with tasks of particular importance. nine0007

Actually, what has been said is quite enough to understand the plot — as in the vast majority of such projects, the developers do not have the task of telling some interesting story. After the dense urban development of Berlin, the design of locations looks quite fresh: here we have to act on enemy positions inside abandoned ancient buildings, in mountain canyons or small settlements occupied by the Nazis. Unfortunately, the developers limited themselves to this only in terms of pleasant changes — then innovations begin that are not so pleasant and completely incomprehensible, taking into account what exactly was criticized by those who remained dissatisfied with the previous work Rebellion players.

There will be no exclusive sniper work here, do not be tempted by the tempting name in advance. Fairbairn is more of a generalist saboteur than a marksman. Most of the targets can be hit in other ways, without resorting to the help of your rifle — stabbed with a knife, blown up with a grenade or explosives, lured to a mine laid by yourself. If you really want to hunt two-legged game, then you have to either look for places where the sound of a shot will be muffled for some reason (a rattling diesel engine, rockfall), or … or the game turns into an ordinary dynamic shooter with slight deviations from the tired classics. There is no smell of sniper craft here: a shot at the first target that comes across, a dash to another position, during which you can kill a couple more infantrymen almost point-blank, a short wait for the moment when the enemy calms down — repeat until the level is completely passed. It is not surprising that running around with a sword naked among African landscapes quickly gets boring. nine0007

There is another extreme — the final part of the fourth mission, which is some kind of shooting range, looks like the apotheosis of absurdity. Being in a convenient position, covering a comrade, you need to shoot all the German soldiers that will meet on his way, and the enemy does not pay any attention to the main character!

For those who get tired of shooting from a rifle, the developers promised other ways to pass — there is also the same stealth. Only he is not only completely different from what you expect in a game about a sniper, but he also looks miserable. No search for a good position, camouflage on the ground — forget it. The local «stealth» requires a dozen quotes on each side: running from one corner to another right in front of unsuspecting soldiers, killing gaping enemies almost in front of their comrades and other blunders in the bud kill the whole atmosphere. nine0007

Sometimes the enemy does not react to the corpse of his partner, and if he raises the alarm, he quickly calms down, forgetting about what happened. Misfire again

Despite the fact that formally SE3 is a game about sniper craft, the changes for the better compared to the previous part in this regard are minimal. All the same hypertrophied ballistics, when a bullet fired from a rifle that is not the weakest begins to fly along a parabola already after fifty meters. The same widely advertised feature of X-Ray, which «sees through» the bodies of enemies when a bullet hits them. That “reliable ballistics”, that you want to turn off the X-ray as soon as possible — the first because of the annoying illogicality (and those who are used to making a correction for range in more realistic action movies will constantly smear it), and the second has managed to get bored since the time of SEV2 .

The developers managed to get it right here too — thanks to the updated «ragdoll», enemy death sometimes looks completely ridiculous: a well-aimed hit throws the body several meters away, limbs bend at the most unimaginable angles, and blood looks like thick jelly. Opponents, despite all the attempts of X-Ray to show the horrors of death, you perceive as rubber dolls, especially since their intelligence is to match.

An interesting idea with self-selection of equipment, new elements of which are unlocked as you «pump», in fact, turns out to be a dummy — you need to try hard to find the differences between different rifles in practice, and not in the game menu, where their characteristics are listed. nine0007

As in the case of the previous game, only the name comes from the sniper. The multiplayer carefully preserved all the absurdity of the competition between well-aimed shooters in the presence of a third-person view. It is still a «fascinating» action, where the winner is the one who takes the best position earlier than others and will survey the surroundings without being exposed to bullets — the benefit of the camera allows this.

Those who want real hardcore and realism have long found it at ArmA 2 ACE — there is still the most reliable sniping in games. If you approach SE3 from the other side and perceive it as an ordinary action movie with elements of stealth and sniper work, you will have to draw a no less sad result — it was better even during the first Call of Duty .

Each level has several pre-prepared sniper positions. In the real world, any self-respecting sniper would bypass such a «prone» for a hundred meters. nine0008

The most annoying thing is that Sniper Elite 3 could turn out to be a very good shooter, albeit not ideal, if Rebellion did a thorough work on the mistakes of the previous part. But the desire and skill of the developers was only enough for the design of the levels and the drawings that are shown during loading — oddly enough, this is the only thing that deserves praise. Sparse for a game with such a big name, isn’t it?

only the story campaign and additional downloadable tasks,
