Pokemon Go Sierra counters January 2023: Best Pokemon to use & weaknesses

Sierra is one of three Team Go Rocket Leaders you can battle in Pokemon Go, but defeating her will take a lot of skill. To make things easier, we’ve put together details of her lineup, weaknesses, and the best counters to use in January 2023.

In Pokemon Go, Trainers can collect Mysterious Components by defeating Team Go Rocket Grunts at invaded Pokestops within the game. Once you have six of them, you’ll be able to form a Rocket Radar, which then leads you straight to the Team Go Rocket Leaders.

Unlike Grunts, who can be taken down fairly easily, Trainers will have a difficult fight ahead when it comes to Team Go Rocket’s Leaders. There are three in total: Cliff, Arlo, and Sierra – as well as their Boss Giovanni – and all of them have unique Pokemon to battle with.

Sierra Pokemon Go counters (January 2023)

Sierra has always been a difficult opponent to take down in Pokemon Go, and this remains the same in January after her current lineup changed as part of the Team Go Rocket Takeover event in November.

At the start of every match, Sierra will always send out Sableye, followed by two of six other potential Pokemon. This is Sierra’s current lineup:

  • Phase 1: Sableye
  • Phase 2: Cacturne / Flygon / Honchkrow
  • Phase 3: Cradily / Houndoom / Snorlax

We’ll update this page once the next Rocket Go event is announced, but for now, here’s everything you need to know about how to beat Sierra in Pokemon Go and the Pokemon she will use.

How to beat Sierra in Pokemon Go

To defeat Sierra in Pokemon Go, you’ll need to utilize a variety of different types to counter her. We’ve featured a mix of stronger Legendaries and more common alternatives, so there should be something here to meet every Trainer’s needs, and all of them are solid choices.

Let’s take a look at the weaknesses of all the different Pokemon that Sierra could choose to send out during your battle, and which counters should be used to beat her.

Sierra Pokemon Go counters phase 1

The Pokemon Company / Niantic

Sierra will always start with Sableye in Phase 1.

Sableye counters

Sableye is a Dark-type Pokemon, which means it’s only vulnerable to Fairy-type attacks.

As for resistances, Sableye is strong against Normal, Psychic, Fighting, and Poison-type moves.

Sierra Pokemon Go phase 2

Cacturne counters

The Pokemon Company / Niantic

Sierra can send out Cacturne, Flygon, or Honchkrow in Phase 2.

Cacturne is a dual Grass/Dark-type, which means it’s weak against Bug, Fairy, Fighting, Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison-type attacks. Its resistances consist of Dark, Electric, Ghost, Grass, Ground, Psychic, and Water-type attacks.

Flygon counters

Flygon is a dual Dragon/Ground-type Pokemon, so it’s weak to Dragon, Fairy, and Ice-type moves and resistant to Electric, Fire, Poison, and Rock-type attacks.

Honchkrow counters

Honchkrow is a dual Dark/Flying-type Pokemon, which means it’s weak against Electric, Fairy, Ice, and Rock-type attacks. Its resistances are Dark, Ghost, Grass, Ground, and Psychic-type moves.

Sierra Pokemon Go phase 3

Houndoom counters

The Pokemon Company / Niantic

Sierra can send out Cradily, Houndoom, or Snorlax in Phase 3.

Houndoom is a dual Dark/Fire-type, which means it’s weak against Fighting, Ground, Rock, and Water-type Pokemon.

Cradily counters

Cradily is a dual Rock/Grass-type Pokemon, making it weak to Bug, Fighting, Ice, and Steel-type attacks.

Thanks to its typing it’s resistant to Electric and Normal-type attacks, so Drapion may pose a challenge to some trainers.

Snorlax counters

Snorlax is a dual Normal-type Pokemon, which means it’s weak against Fighting-type attacks and is resistant to Ghost-type moves, meaning that you’ll need to pull from a smaller pool of types to be effective against it.

Best team to defeat Sierra in Pokemon Go

The ideal team of three Pokemon will help you beat Sierra in no time.

One of the best teams to defeat Sierra in Pokemon Go would be Gardevoir, Mewtwo, and Pheromosa.

Now that Sierra sends out Sableye first, you’ll want a solid Fairy-type like Gardevoir to defeat it. Gardevoir is also a great counter to Honchkrow. Then, a powerful Psychic-type like Mewtwo will be able to take down Snorlax and Flygon if Sierra chooses them instead.

Finally, a strong dual Fighting/Bug-type like Pheromosa will prove resistant against much of Sierra’s team, like Snorlax, Cradily, and Houndoom, and Cacturne — so it could end up saving some players in a pinch.

Keep in mind that Team Go Rocket Leader Sierra is a difficult battle for almost any trainer, but if you take advantage of each Pokemon’s weaknesses with the counters we’ve listed above, you should be able to defeat her eventually.
